Stephen Wellington
....show of Pike, NH passed away on Thursday January 13th at the age of 89. He had been in declining health for many months from the combined effects of congestive heart failure and dementia and finally died as he had lived peacefully and surrounded by family. Stephen was born in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1921 to a family of bankers and business people. He graduated from Milton Academy in 1939 and was a class of 1943 graduate of Yale University. He enlisted in the Air Force during World War II and was trained as a meteorologist at MIT. As a dashing young 2nd Lieutenant, he lived an active social life during his training, and frequently dated women at Smith College where he met and was smitten by the gregarious and beautiful Ruth Jeffers, of Northampton, MA. During his tours as a weather forecaster at airfields in Nebraska, Paris, France and Naples, Italy, the pair carried on a passionate and wide-ranging correspondence, and following the war they were married, eventually settling in Newton, Massachusetts. While Steve pursued a career as an industrial engineer, the couple raised five children. After the last of the kids were through school, the couple retired to Ruth s family home in Pike where they raised Herefords and made maple syrup for many years. Steve was particularly interested in historic preservation and was a major contributor to the renovation of the Bedell Covered Bridge, Alumni Hall in Haverhill, and the Canterbury Shaker Village.
