, 70, of Durham, CT passed away at his home on Friday, August 19, 2011. He was the husband of Laurie Mester. He was born in St. Johnsbury, VT on September 30, 1940 and was the son of Herbert D. and Elsie 'Sally' (Wilkie) Twombly. He was preceded in death by his parents, his third wife, Patricia (Sheltra) Twombly and his daughter, Robin Twombly. He is survived by his brother, Robert Twombly and his wife Gail of Seminole, FL; his children, Andrea Lee Hills and her husband Edward of Middletown, CT; Adrienne Abbott and her husband Keith of Bethel, VT; Amy Koenig and Craig Twombly both of Royalton, VT; Darren Twombly of Windham, ME; Claude Poitras and his wife Donna of Winterport, ME; Sheila Poitras and her significant other Brian Young of Durham, CT. Ronald also leaves behind several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was a 1958 graduate of Springfield High School in Vermont and a member of the Federal Army Reserve until 1962. He was employed at Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield, VT. He later married and relocated to Bethel, VT where he was employed at GW Plastics. He was also employed at Newport Plastics in Newport, VT and moved to Durham, CT in 1983. He retired from General Dynamics in 1993. Ronald was a peace loving and caring man and had the knack to create familial harmony within his large blended family. To his credit, he always referred to his blended family as 'ours.' He touched many lives with is wonderful sense of humor and took great pride in his many grandchildren. He especially enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing with his family and friends, as well as attending the Middlesex Livestock Auction and many local agricultural fairs. A celebration of his life is being planned for a later date at the convenience of the family. , age 86, of Lowell, VT died on Thursday, September 8, 2011. He was born January 8, 1925 in Guilford, VT to William and Bessie (Davis) Higley. He was predeceased by one half brother, George, and two half-sisters, Lucy Higley and Evelyn Clark, all of Guilford. He is survived by one brother, Herbert of San Diego, CA and one sister, Wilma Higgins of Guilford. Mr. Higley graduated from Brattleboro High School and then served two years in the U.S. Navy. In 1952 he graduated from the University of Vermont, where he was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity, and the Honorary Boulder Society. Mr. Higley was a builder and cabinet maker in the Brattleboro area for over 40 years. He was honored by the Vermont School Boards Association for 25 years of dedicated service to Windham Southeast Supervisory District schools. From a young age, he was an enthusiastic outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. In his retirement years he enjoyed golfing and his winters in Alabama. His main love was his family, his wife of 58 years, Georgia (Anderson), formerly of Proctor, five sons and spouses: Paul Higley and Katherine Simon, of Keene, NH; Mark and Catherine Higley of Lowell; Eric Higley of Jeffersonville; Brian Higley and Margaret Rasmussen of Beacon, NY; Kristian and Emma Higley of Brattleboro; and one daughter, Allison White of Guilford; also 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. A celebration of Mr. Higley's life will be held Saturday, September 24, from 2-4:30 p.m. at the Higley home, 275 Buck Hill Road, Lowell. , age 97, passed away Sunday afternoon September 11, 2011 at the Union House Nursing Home in Glover. She was born August 14, 1914 in Montgomery Center the daughter of the late Clyde and Louise (Lumbra) Tevyaw. Alvira was a graduate of Enosburg Falls High School. As a young woman she worked at the Sheldon Poor Farm where she met her future husband Maxwell Arel. Alvira and Maxwell were married July 4, 1940. They owned and operated a farm in Montgomery Center on Route 242 and during that time she also worked at Chaffee's IGA. She then worked as a psychiatric nurse for the State of Vermont at the State Hospital in Waterbury and a boarding home in Burlington for 16 years retiring in 1977. When living in Montgomery she was an active member of the Montgomery Community Baptist Church and she was a former member of the Montgomery Grange. Alvira enjoyed crocheting, embroidering and cooking. Following Max's death she spent countless hours with her cousin Evelyn Hart, shopping and going out to eat. She especially loved to spend time with her family. She is survived by her children: Larry Arel and his wife Susie of Lowell, Charles "Chuck" Arel and his wife Jackie of Vergennes, and Carlotta Corcoran and her companion Allen Stevens of Irasburg; her grandchildren: (Larry's children) Patrick Arel and his wife Gina of Lowell, Laura Staib and her husband Lonnie of Alaska, Shannon Driver and her husband Jason of Jay; (Chuck's children) Jeremy Arel and Josh Arel and his wife Abby all of Vergennes; and (Carlotta's children) Jamie Corcoran of Pennsylvania, and Tiffany Little of Irasburg; 8 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Alvira was predeceased by her husband Maxwell Arel on December 1, 1979 and her sister Doris Tevyaw. A memorial service will be held Friday, September 16, 2011 at 12 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls with Rev. Jason McConnell officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheldon Village Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 11 a.m. until the hour of the funeral.
