Nash Basom

, 69, died at his home in Glover on August 3, surrounded by his family. Born in 1942 in Alexandria, Virginia, Mr. Basom first fell in love with Vermont when he attended Farm and Wilderness Summer Camps as a youth in the 1950s. Later, he and his partner, Mariel Hess, moved to Vermont permanently, where they built a home in Glover and raised their daughters, Reeve and Kit. Mr. Basom was passionate about racial equality, social justice, and education. In the 1960s, he was a civil rights worker in Mississippi. In the early 70s, he worked on relief efforts in Malawi and Tanzania and as a supporter of the Mozambique movement for independence. During his life in Vermont, Mr. Basom worked as the first director of Orleans County Court Diversion, as a member of the Newport Community Justice Center Steering Committee and Reparative Board, as a staff member at Farm and Wilderness and chair of the board of trustees, and as a selectman for the town of Glover. In his 25-year career as a guidance counselor at North Country Union High School in Newport, Mr. Basom was a valuable resource and mentor for thousands of young people and their families. Mr. Basom found joy in hard work, rich conversation, and collaboration. He believed in the essential goodness of people and had a deep reverence for the natural world. One of Mr. Basom's gifts was his ability to transform challenge into opportunity. He inspired and empowered us to build connections through the best in ourselves and each other. Those wishing to celebrate Mr. Basom's life are welcome to join the family at their home, 2980 Perron Hill in Glover, for a gathering at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 20. Bella M. Brochu

, 93, of Derby died in Newport on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 with her many loving family members at her side. She was born February 24, 1918 in Coaticook, Quebec, a daughter of Adelard and Dorilla (Charron) Bedard. She married Gerard Brochu on April 29, 1935. They spent several years on a farm before opening Belle's Shoppe in Derby Line which they operated together until Mr. Brochu died in 1993. She then operated the business with the help of her son, Gerard, until 1999. Mrs. Brochu was an avid collector and had many different collections that she built up over the years. She enjoyed yard sales, bird watching, bingo, going for rides with her daughters, "deer hunting," her flower gardens, and teaching her grandchildren how to win at card games. Over the years, Mr. and Mrs. Brochu traveled through all of the United States and Canadian Provinces, going to antique shows and stores. But first and foremost, she especially loved and enjoyed her family and their visits, family reunions, and get-togethers. She is survived by her children: Eva Brochu of Newport; Anna Sanville and her husband, Charles, of Newport Center; Clara Brochu of Ellsworth, Maine; Rita Choquette and her husband, Omer, of Derby; Maria "Pete" Buck and her husband, Charles, of Newport Center; Lea Cook and her husband, Ron, of Irasburg; Rene Brochu of Newport Center; Gerard "Jerry" Brochu of Newport; Stephen Brochu and his wife, Paula, of Derby Line; Martha DuPont of Florida; Alfred Brochu of Kentucky; Theresa (Tess) Round and her companion, Todd Morey, of Troy; Patricia Mann of New Hampshire; and John Brochu and his companion, Claire Tetreault, of North Troy. She is also survived by 42 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, 22 great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, her sisters: Alberta Oakes of New Hampshire and Leona Clowery of Coaticook, Quebec; and her six half-brothers and sisters: Bernadette, Bernard, Oliver, Lucille, Rosaire, and Roger. Mrs. Brochu was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Madeleine Brochu; her brothers: Albert, Henry, and Noel; and by her sisters: Blanche Crowley, Aurare Poulin, and Delia Hamel. Funeral services were held on August 5 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newport. Interment followed in St. Mary's Cemetery. Thelma Mildred (Gray) Jennings

of Newport, died on July 28 after a long illness. Born April 24, 1920, she was the second child of Rober and Mamie (Uttin) Gray. She was educated at various schools in northern Vermont and later worked at General Electric and Springfield Rifle in Massachusetts. In 1945, she married Harold Colvill of Newburgh, New York. Mrs. Jennings was a licensed foster parent and the couple later adopted a five-day-old baby girl, Debra Mae. Mr. Colvill predeceased Mrs. Jennings in 1959. She later married Idell Jennings Sr. After he died in 1979, she became a home care giver, retiring in 1999. Mrs. Jennings was a member of the Chapel Hill Bible Church, Star of Bethlehem Lodge #48, West Charleston Historical Society, and Jenny's Garden Social Club. She is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Barry Crego of Wallingford, Connecticut; her loving granddaughter, Annie Schneider of Connecticut; her grandson, Chris Jennings of Newburgh, New York; her sisters: Marilyn Meleue of Ludlow, Massachusetts and Ellie Tyler of Newport; and her brother, Robert Gray of Newport. She was predeceased by her sister Helen Smith of Burlington. Special mention to Robert Savage and George and Burnadette Bush of Newburgh. Graveside services will be held at the family burial site in West Charleston in private.
Amanda Sanborne Krieble

, 90, of Hanover, New Hampshire, and formerly of Shaker Heights, Ohio, died on August 1, 2011. Born in New York City, she grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey. In 1943, she married Jim Krieble and together they raised three children in Schenectady, New York, and Shaker Heights. Mrs. Krieble was an active volunteer in school, church, and community organizations, including the Westmore Association, Northfield Conference for Girls, PTA, Shaker Lakes Nature Center, Cleveland Art Museum, and the Middlebury College Alumni Association. She was a member of the Retired Teachers' Association of Orleans County. For several years, she taught English at Hathaway Brown School and Laurel School in Ohio. She was devoted to her husband, children, and grandchildren, and loved people of all ages. She enjoyed entertaining friends and family with a home-cooked meal, writing letters to stay in touch, and reading books. Throughout her life, she enjoyed summers in Westmore. Survivors include her husband, James; her daughter, Cynthia, and son-in-law, Raeburn; her daughter, Elizabeth; her son, John, and daughter-in-law, Katherine; and her four grandchildren. , 78, of Newport passed away on Wednesday August 3, 2011 in Newport. She was born on July 14, 1933 in Newport, a daughter of Oliver and Edna (Lamere) Blanchard. On January 13, 1950, she married Oliver Lantagne who predeceased her in 1996. Mrs. Lantagne was a receptionist for NECKA in Newport and retired in 2007. She also worked as a customer service representative at Sears and The Pick and Shovel. She enjoyed many trips with the Community Circle, going to Maine with her family, going to camp in Wenlock with the late Mr. Lantagne, and enjoying the family. Mrs. Lantagne, in her last few months with us, always looked forward to starting her day with saying "Good morning" to Hannah, her great-granddaughter, and seeing her off to school. Mrs. Lantagne was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post #798 in Newport. She is survived by her children: Wayne Lantagne and his wife, Joette, of Morgan and their children Shane and Stacie; Cheryl Kelley and her husband, Bob, and their son, Nathan, of Newport Center; David Lantagne and his wife, Robin, of Newport Center and their children Liberty, Daniel, Miranda, and Billy; Cathy Lantagne and her companion, Jerry Prue, of Newport, and her daughter, Trisha, of Newport; Kim Mathison and her husband, Randall, and their children, Nicole and Nicholas, of Newport Center; and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on August 6 at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport. Interment followed at St. Mary's Cemetery. , 64, of Port Charlotte, Florida and Island Pond died unexpectedly on June 21, 2011. He was born on November 22, 1947 in Burlington to Bernard and Bunny Payeur. He graduated from Concord High School in Concord. He served 22 years in the Air National Guard. Mr. Payeur is survived by his parents: Bernard and Bunny Payeur of Derby; his two children: Christopher Payeur of North Port, Florida and Jennifer Kemp of Burlington; a brother, David Payeur of Oregon; as well as four grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Phillip Payeur, in 1991. Mr. Payeur's funeral will be at St. James Catholic Church in Island Pond on Saturday, August 13, at 11 a.m. with Father Francis Conners as celebrant. Interment will be at Mr. Payeur's parents' plot at Lakeview Cemetery on Pleasant Street following the Mass. The family will receive family and friends at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral.

, 57, of South Daytona, Florida, died suddenly on July 18, 2011. She was born October 15, 1953, in Newport, a daughter of Thomas and Shirley Ann (Hartley) Bouthillier. She is survived by her two sons: Collin Snay, and his wife, Ann, of Newport Center, and Derrick Snay of Sheldon; her special grandchildren: Aiden and Jordan; her uncle and aunt: James and Rosemarie Hartley; her cousins: Jason and Ethan Hartley; her special cousin, Raymond Laramie; and her cousins of the Bouthillier family. She was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Shirley Ann (Hartley) Bouthillier; her maternal grandparents, Henry and Luminee (Lou) Hartley; and her paternal grandparents, Bruce and Antoinette Bouthillier. Ms. Bouthillier graduated from North Country Union High School in the Class of 1971. She was a waitress for many years at the Brown Cow in Newport, and the Brick Oven in Burlington. Ms. Bouthillier loved all animals, especially her dogs, Skooter and Wilson. She was loved by all who knew her. A funeral service was held at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Church in Newport on August 1 where a Mass was celebrated. Interment followed at St. Mary's Cemetery. Elaine Woodworth Welch Derry

, 89, a lifelong resident of the Northeast Kingdom, died on Wednesday, July 27, surrounded by her family at the Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton. Born January 4, 1922, in St. Johnsbury, she was a daughter of Lyle S. and Ruby D. (Bowden) Woodworth. Mrs. Derry graduated from Lyndon Institute, Class of 1940. She married Laurence S. Welch in December 1944. She met him while taking flying lessons. To this union, three children were born. She and Mr. Welch later divorced. She married Gerald E. Derry on October 28, 1968. He predeceased her on June 4, 2006. Mrs. Derry worked for many area businesses, including as a receptionist at Brightlook Hospital, as a newspaper route driver for the Caledonian-Record, as a bookkeeper for Koppers Company, and later for J. and J. Lumber in East Burke. She and Mr. Derry owned and operated a bed and breakfast in East Burke for many years, accommodating skiers and snowmobilers. She enjoyed flowers (especially gladiolas) and birds (especially chickadees). She loved all animals and had several favorites through the years. She frequently spoke of Sandy, a quarter horse she owned many years ago. An artistic person, Mrs. Derry was often called upon to design and paint posters for community events. She was a strict grammarian who insisted her children learn often-overlooked subtleties of English language usage, including the proper verb tense and the difference between subjective and objective pronoun forms. She was an enthusiastic and very competent proofreader, and she delighted in both the discovery of the occasional double entendre and in the creation of her own. Mrs. Derry is survived by her children and their spouses: Lauren "Joe" and Anne Welch of East Burke, Lyle "Jerry" and Lynn Welch of West Burke, Laurelie and Dennis Chapman of Fairbanks, Arkansas; two grandsons: Corey Welch of Waterbury and Jeffrey and Robin Welch of Scotts Mills, Oregon; three great-grandchildren: Austin Welch, Kyla Welch, and Carter Welch; two stepsons: Reginald and Kay Welch of Lyndonville, and Richard and Ruth Welch of East Burke; a sister, Shirley Renner, of Durham, New Hampshire; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Woodworth of Lebanon, Maine; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her mother and father, Mrs. Derry was predeceased by two brothers, Dale and Donald Woodworth; a half-brother, Carlton Woodworth; and her stepmother, Lillian Woodworth. A graveside service was held in the Woodmont Cemetery in East Burke on July 29 with the Reverend Christina Findlay officiating. Olga Hallowell

, 90, of Albany, died on Sunday, July 24, 2011, at the Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton, with her daughters by her side. She was born on July 6, 1921, a daughter of John and Mary (Millick) Daniluk in Chester, Pennsylvania. She married George L. Hallowell on February 10, 1940. He predeceased her in 2007. They made their home in New Jersey before moving to Albany in 1980. Survivors include her daughters: Catherine Sheehan and Patricia DiPietro, both of Albany; her sister, Catherine Lapiska of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; and her many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hallowell was predeceased by her two sons-in-law, Alden Sheehan and Philip "Babe" DiPietro; her brothers Carl and John; and her sister, Elinor. Mrs. Hallowell was a generous and caring person. Mrs. Hallowell worked at the National Labor Relations Board in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and for the A&P Grocery Chain in New Jersey. She volunteered at the Neighborhood Center in Camden, New Jersey and the Old Stone House in Brownington. For many years, she was an active member of the United Methodist Church in both New Jersey and Vermont. A graveside service was held at the Albany Cemetery on July 29, officiated by the Reverend Walter A. Quigg of Ocean Grove, New Jersey, and Lake Seymour, Vermont. John Hoyt

, 37, died unexpectedly at his home on Friday, July 29, 2011, in Claremont, New Hampshire. Mr. Hoyt was born in Claremont on February 2, 1974, a son of Sidney Hoyt and Linda Patch. John was a graduate of Stevens High School in the Class of 1992. At the time of his passing, he was working with the Valenti Modified Racing Series as their series director and had previously worked for Twin State Speedway. He had been involved in racing since he was in high school, working with the Valenti Modified Racing Series and Whelen Modifieds and Pro Stocks. He worked with Mike Brousseau, Ricky Miller, and many others. He also co-founded the Granite State Modified Series. Mr. Hoyt enjoyed barbecues with family and friends, and having a good time at the trifectas. Mr. Hoyt's family includes his wife, Sue (Carignan) Hoyt; a son, Alexander Hoyt; three daughters: Ashlee Hoyt, Sammantha Hoyt, and Rose Hoyt, all of Claremont; his father, Sidney Hoyt of Claremont; two sisters: Cathy Pellerin and Tammy Lacasse; his aunt and uncle, Don and Lee Collins; and special friends: Mike Parks, Scott Miller, Jet Miller, and Jay Caruso. He was predeceased by his mother, Linda Patch, on July 27, 2007; paternal grandmother, Rose Hoyt, on December 8, 2004; a nephew, Aaron Branch, on November 25, 2007; and an aunt, Lois Krim. Friends and family gathered at the Stringer Funeral Home in Claremont on August 1, for his wake. Graveside funeral services were held on August 2 at the West Claremont Burying Ground on Old Church Road in Claremont.
Marvin James Kellogg

, 95, died on July 28, 2011, in Newport. Mr. Kellogg was born March 3, 1916 in Crayton, Nebraska. He was predeceased by his parents, Earl and Mary Kellogg; his wife, Bernice Kellogg; and by his brothers: Leonard, Don, Leo, Bob, and Everett. Mr. Kellogg, along with his five brothers, served in World War II. They all saw action and all came home alive. Mr. Kellogg served with the Army Air Corps on the islands of Guam, Saipan, and Tinian. He finished his career, retiring from McDonald's Restaurant Corporation, working for a large franchise owner in Oakland, California. He is survived by his four sisters: Nadine, Viola, Gatha, and Margaret Jean; one brother, Dick; sons, Don Kellogg, and his wife, Kathy, of Reno, Nevada and Gary Kellogg, and his wife, Kathy, formerly of Newport, now residing in Lake Hazasu City, Arizona; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Mr. Kellogg will be interred at a later date in Sioux City, Iowa. , 81, of North Troy, died on July 28, 2011, in Newport, with his daughter, Lillian, and her husband, Joseph, by his side. He was born September 12, 1929 in St. Odlion, Quebec, a son of Antonio and Amoza (Cloutier) Labbee. On August 30, 1952, he married Muriel L'Etoile who predeceased him on July 1, 2010. Mr. Labbee was a dairy farmer in North Troy for many years. He was a member of the American Legion North Troy, Jay Peak Post 28, and attended the senior meal site in Westfield. He was also a volunteer with the Jay Fire Department. He and his late wife enjoyed traveling with the Community Circle Group and with the Vermont Travel Tours for over ten years. He is survived by his daughter, Lillian Fortin, and her husband, Joseph, of North Troy; a grandson, Kevin Fortin of North Troy; a brother, Real Labbee of St. Joseph de Beauce, Quebec; a sister, Yolande Labbee of Levis, Quebec; two sisters-in-law: Yvette Labbee of Newport Center and Rachel Labbee of St. Joseph de Beauce, Quebec; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a twin brother, Raymond Labbee, and by a brother, Adrien Labbee. Funeral services were held on August 1 at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, with the Reverend Henry Mlinganisa officiating. Interment followed in St. Ignatius Cemetary in Lowell. Bertrand C. Lague

, 75, of Herrick Road in Derby Line, died suddenly on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington, with his immediate family at his side. Mr. Lague was born in North Troy on February 21, 1936, a son of David and Florence Lague. He served in the United States Army as a chaplain's assistant during the Korean War. He later went on to work for 30 years as a U.S. immigration inspector with the Immigration and Naturalization Service while also serving the local community with his tax preparation expertise as part of his business, LagTax. In addition, he served on the Board of Directors for the Vermont Electric Co-op for 25 years, a position that he was very passionate about and enjoyed dearly. Mr. Lague was a dedicated communicant of St. Edward Parish for most of his life. He was also an active member of VFW Post 798, American Legion Post 21, and a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus of Newport. He also served on the finance committee of St. Edward Parish. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Jeannine (Patenaude) Lague. He leaves behind his legacy in his five children and 11 grandchildren: David and Wendy Lague and their four children of Concord, New Hampshire; Mark and Helene Somerville and their two children of Hooksett, New Hampshire; Matthew and Caroline Mosseau and their two children of Bedford, New Hampshire; Normand and Sonya Lague and their two children of Rouses Point, New York; and Jacques and Sherene Lague and their daughter of Atkinson, New Hampshire. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Norbert Lague, of St. Petersburg, Florida; sisters Andreanne St. Onge of Pierrefonds, Quebec, and Suzanne Grandpre of Travers City, Michigan; and many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Calling hours were on July 31 at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, during which a vigil was held. A funeral Mass was celebrated on August 1 at St. Edward Parish in Derby Line with Father Michael Reardon as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Edward's Cemetery with full military honors, and a reception was held at the East Side restaurant in Newport. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in Mr. Lague's memory be made to Catholic Charities or to promote vocations in the Catholic church in your local community.
