Maynard J. Greenwood

, 64, of Newport died suddenly on Friday August 26, 2011, in Newport. He was born on November 21, 1946 in Holland, a son of Talcott and Erdene (Gray) Greenwood. Mr. Greenwood graduated from Derby Academy and went on to serve in the Air Force. He was employed by Butterfield's as a machinist for many years before eventually running his own business, Maynard's Auto Sales, where he repaired and sold cars and trucks. His many Simplicity tractors brought him great pleasure and he enjoyed working on them and keeping them running. He liked to be on his computer and used it as administrator of the Simplicity Tractor Club. He was an active member of Disabled American Veterans and was its state commander from 2008 to 2009, and he was head of the Veterans Administration Volunteer Services. Mr. Greenwood was a past member of the Orleans County Sheriff's Department and a member and past esquire of the Newport Elks Club # 2155 for seventeen years. He is survived by his wife Ann Marie; his sisters: Michaelene Greenwood Baker and her husband, Gaylord, of Newport; and Linda Greenwood Mitchell of Holland; and by several nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31 at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 1. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery with full military honors. An Elks service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on August 31 at the funeral home. Kenneth W. Magoon

, 74, died on Friday, August 26, 2011, in Lebanon, New Hampshire, after a long illness. He was born on October 16, 1936 in Newport, a son of Guy and Ester (Geer) Magoon. He graduated from Newport High School in 1955 and entered the Air Force shortly after for a four year enlistment including spending a year in Japan. After leaving the service, he joined the securities firm of Harris, Upham and Company, Inc. of Boston. He married Judith Hill in 1960. In 1971 he worked for Meddendorff, Colgate and Co., also located in Boston. Mr. and Mrs. Magoon moved back to Vermont in 1973 and Mr. Magoon started working at Butterfield's as an accountant and personal manager and eventually for Tivoly, from which he retired. Mr. Magoon was also a former member and past president of the Border Jaycees and former member of the Newport Elks Club. He served the city of Newport as alderman from 1976 to 1980 and also as police commissioner, mayor from 1980 to1982, and city manager from 1995 to 1999. It was during these years that both the waste treatment plant and the fire station were built. Mr. Magoon was also very involved in MSA, coming to Newport for a couple of years which turned out to be a very big asset to the area. He also served as a side judge. Mr. and Mrs. Magoon traveled to North Carolina several times to see their son and family and enjoyed stopping at the beaches up and down the coast. They also owned a cottage on Cousin's Beach for over ten years and in general loved Vermont and the Newport area for all it had to offer. He also enjoyed riding his ATV and Kubota. He will be missed by the guys he met at lunch time at the Short Stop several days a week. But first and foremost, he was a family man who loved and enjoyed the many, many times they spent together. He is survived by his wife, Judy Magoon, of Newport; by two sons: Ronald Magoon and his wife, Arlene, of Amherst, New Hampshire and Barrett (Barry) Magoon and his wife, Mary, of Fuquay Varina, North Carolina; by his grandchildren: Chrysann Magoon of New Hampshire; Caitlyn Folia and her husband, Eric, of New Hampshire; Marcel and his wife, Dot Chaput, of Michigan; and Jordan and Bailey Magoon of North Carolina; by three great-grandchildren; by his sister Lois Moore of Orleans; his sister-in-law Rachel Magoon of Maryland; and by his nieces and nephew. He was predeceased by his brothers Alton and Richard Magoon. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 3 at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport. Marie "Florence" Gabriel Couture Martin

, 86, died on August 22, 2011, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease at the Country Village Assisted Living Home in Casco, Maine. She was born in Williamstown on November 18, 1924. She resided for many years in Orleans and Ballston Spa, New York. She was very proud of raising her six children and told everyone about it. She enjoyed the outdoors, traveling with her husband, taking walks, swimming, and relaxing in the sun. Mrs. and Mr. Martin retired to their home in Craftsbury for the summer, and wintered in Port Charlotte, Florida. Mrs. Martin loved her home in Florida. Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Donald Martin; her six children: Terry, and his wife, Ruth; Ronald and his wife, Susan; Stephen and his companion, Paula Lapham; Sharlene and her husband, Robert Spalding; Douglas and his wife, Paula; and Christopher and his wife, Janice; her 11 grandchildren: Asa, Chase, Jeffrey, Renee, Nicholas, Danielle, Mike, Evan, Arlyss, Ryan, and Hannah; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents: Zelia Roy Couture and Joseph Couture; her sisters: Lillian Foster and Bernadette Demers; her brother Bernard Couture; and ten of their siblings who died as children. of Newport Center died on August 25, 2011, in Newport. He was born on October 30, 1921 in St. Elizabeth de Warwick, Quebec, a son of Arthur and Alida (Labarre) Rondeau. On August 23, 1945 he married Jeanne d'Arc Bolduc who survives him. Mr. Rondeau owned a restaurant in Victoria Ville, Quebec, before he came to Vermont. He was a dairy farmer in Newport Center for many years, and more recently a truck driver. Among his hobbies, he enjoyed playing the harmonica when he was young, reading, and listening to music. He is survived by his wife Jeanne Rondeau of Newport Center; his children: Jerome Rondeau and his wife, Darlene, of Troy; Jean Rondeau of Newport Center; Sr. Beatrice Francine Rondeau of Mont Tremblent, Quebec; Suzanne Bradley and her husband, Cecil, of Tallahassee, Florida; Jeremy Rondeau and his wife, Jessica, of Troy; and Kristina Bradley and her companion, Simon, of Boston; by two grandchildren: Levi and Gavin Rondeau; his brother Francois Rondeau and his wife, Gertrude, of Quebec City; by his sisters-in-law: Claire Rondeau of Warwick, Quebec, Germaine Rondeau of Warwick, and Monique Rondeau of Granby, Quebec; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Annie Louise Barney

- Ms. Barney was born the tenth of 12 children in Irasburg to Ann and Will Scott. Ms. Barney grew up on the family farm during the Depression and World War II, working for neighbors and local businesses. Upon completing high school, she traveled across the country working various jobs. On February 22, 1953 she married her high school sweetheart, Ike Barney of Orleans. Ms. Barney was a faithful servant of God. She spent most of her life as a loving homemaker and mother. When the children left the nest, she helped with Ike's artificial insemination business. They both retired in 2004. Ms. Barney enjoyed gardening, painting, cooking, and spending time with her family, friends, and her dog, Daisy. Ms. Barney was predeceased by seven brothers and sisters and her husband of 55 years. She is survived by her children: Rob Barney, Rowe and Linda Barney, and Ryan Barney; her grandchildren: Ross and Lauren Barney, Rex Barney, Kayla Barney, Alexis Barney, R.J. Barney, Cori Barney, and Kirk Barney; brothers: Clair Scott and Walter Scott; and sisters: Thelma Karagines and Winnie Gallop. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Community Baptist Church. Interment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery in Orleans in the summer of 2012.

, 56, of Barton died on August 19, 2011 in Barton. He was born on May 17, 1955 in Newport, a son of Paul and Jean (Madden) Boulanger. Mr. Boulanger lived life to the fullest and was a big joy to the residents and staff at the Maple Lane Nursing Home, where he resided for many years. Mr. Boulanger is survived by his children: Heidi and Tiffany Boulanger; his grandchildren; a brother, Thomas Boulanger, and his wife, Wilma, of Newport; his sisters: Georgia Fournier of Troy, Ruth Forgues of Lyndonville, Ethel Rowell and her husband, Mitch, of Albany, Sharon Provencha and her husband, Dale, of Westfield, and Joan Therrien and her husband, Roland, of Derby. On September 25, 1969, he married Theda Thurston, who survives him. Mr. Breault was a self-employed truck driver. His hobbies included working on cars, hunting, and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Theda Breault of Newport; his children: Rose Breault and Clarence G. , affectionately known as "Opa", died on August 5, 2011 at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut. He was born in Warsin Kreis Pyrtiz, Germany, on February 25, 1940, a son of Walter Gustav and Frieda (Rufer) Godau Krusel. Mr. Godau was educated in Germany as a machinist and toolmaker. He worked as a machinist, toolmaker, manufacturing engineer and estimator for Iseli Co. and Palladin Precision Products in Connecticut. Mr. Godau moved to the United States in 1959, living in Wolcott, Connecticut, for 48 years. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Judith; his sons: Brian Godau and his wife, Suzanne, of Bristol, Connecticut, and Kevin Godau, of Wolcott, Connecticut; and his daughter, Ellen Waldren and her husband, David, of Waterbury; his brothers: Hermann Godau and his wife, Traudel, and Artur Godau and his wife, Roswita, both of Munich, Germany; his grandchildren: Jessica Waldren, Joshua Waldren, Nicholas Godau, Annelise Godau, and Alexandra Godau. Mr. Godau is predeceased by a son, Martin Hans Walter, Jr., and a brother, Hans Joachim Krusel. Mr. Godau enjoyed traveling, especially to Echo Lake in East Charleston, where he was a seasonal resident for 37 years. Echo Lake was a very special place for Mr. Godau to enjoy spending time with his family. Soccer was also a big part of his life, playing goalie for the Waterbury Eagles when he came to the U.S. He was an avid fan of U.S. and German soccer teams. Funeral services were held on August 9 at Snyder Funeral Home, in Waterbury. Interment followed at Edgewood Cemetery in Wolcott, Connecticut.

, 72, of West Charleston died on August 20, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in East Charleston on May 27, 1939. He was the sixth child born to Harley and Bertha (Hudson) Moulton. Mr. Moulton proudly served his country for over four years in the Navy. Mr. Moulton was an extremely talented machinist who retired from Metal Flex in 2004. He was an active member of the Free Will Baptist Church in West Charleston where he served many positions. He always put others before himself and would gladly help anyone in need. He was loved by all who knew him. Mr. Moulton was forever tinkering on something. He could often be found in his garage, working on a project and listening to country music. Mr. Moulton's proudest day was when he became a Papa. He had an immeasurable amount of love to give. Mr. Moulton was predeceased by his parents, Harley and Bertha (Hudson) Moulton; his sister, Beverly (Moulton) Bowen; and his brother, Harley Moulton Jr. Mr. Moulton is survived by his wife of 24 years, Jane (Powers) Moulton of West Charleston; his sons: Dale Moulton Jr., Richard Moulton, Timothy Moulton, Scott Moulton, and Jared Moulton, and their families; two step-daughters: Tracy (Willard) Bianchi of Milton, and Betsy Willard of Derby, and their families; as well as many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mr. Moulton is also survived by his siblings: Marjorie (Moulton) Balch of Florida, Marilyn (Moulton) Hardy of Derby Line, Charlene (Moulton) Maxwell of Island Pond, Connie (Moulton) Basik of Connecticut, Ronald Moulton of East Charleston, and Pearl (Moulton) Wright of Montana, and their families. , 82, died on Wednesday, August 17, 2011, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. Mrs. Powers was born on May 27, 1929 in Barton, a daughter of Forrest Horner and Dorothy Young. She was married on July 22, 1978 to Richard Powers who survives her. She was employed for many years at Natole Motors as a bookkeeper and was an avid reader. She was predeceased by her sons: Frederick, Roger, and Carlton Jewett; her brother, Ray Young; and sisters: Caroline Marsh and Lauray Faust. In addition to her husband Richard, she is survived by one granddaughter, two great-grandchildren; her brothers, Roy Young, and his wife, Mabel, of Williston, and Armand Young of Kirby; her sister-in-law, Beverly Young, of Glover; her father-in-law, Gerald Powers, of Tarpon Springs, Florida; brothers-in-law: Dean Powers and his wife, Charlotte, of West Charleston, and William Powers and his wife, Terry, of Tarpon Springs, and Keith Powers and friend, Nancy, of East Hampton, Massachusetts; and by several nieces and nephews. , 97, of Orleans died on August 9, 2011, in Glover. She was born May 11, 1914 in Sheffield, a daughter of Samuel and Myra (May) Leonard Paul. On February 16, 1932 she married Edson Basford who predeceased her. Mrs. Basford was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Her interests were raising plants, sewing, needlework, making handcrafts, cooking, and playing bingo. She is survived by her children: Beatrice Whittier of Barton, Gloria White of Greensboro Bend, Lorraine Gilfillan of Nashua, New Hampshire, Beverly Messier of Florida, and Phoebe Noyes of Coventry. She is also survived by 27 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren; and by a sister, Rita French of Concord, New Hampshire. She was predeceased by her children: Barbara Isham and her husband, Rupert, Myrna Brosseau, Brian Basford and his wife, Linda, Bernard Basford, and Charles Basford; by her brothers and sisters: Edith DeGreenia, Elsie Davis, Ruth Trefethen, Rosa Champange, and William Paul; and by sons-in-law, Everett Kimball and Irwin White. Joseph A. Gillis

, 82, of Island Pond died in Rutland on August 8, 2011. He leaves behind his former wife, Althea Gillis; and four children: Raymond Gillis Sr. and his wife, Darlene, of Howes Cave, New York, Richard Gillis Sr. of Winooski, Gary Gillis of Whittier, California, and Robin Giguere of Northboro, Massachusetts. He also leaves behind his 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Joe enjoyed spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren grow. He served in the Korean War and worked on the Grand Trunk Railroad for many years. His love for trains continued throughout his life. He also worked as an accomplished painting and wallpaper contractor until his retirement. He had a special love for animals and a kind heart for all who knew him. Services were held at the St. James Catholic Church on August 12 in Island Pond. Graveside service followed at the Lakeside Cemetery, and a celebration of his life was held at the American Legion Island Pond.
Charles S. Gray

of Derby died at his home, after a short illness, with his family at his side. He was born on January 29, 1928 in Kingsford, Michigan, a son of Harrison and Lucille (Gilliand) Gray. Mr. Gray served in the Navy and received a degree in engineering. Later on, he received his LPN license and worked for over ten years at North Country Hospital as a respiratory therapist and he also worked part-time for the hospital in St. Albans. He married Katie McGreevey in 2004, who survives him. They liked to travel, especially to Maine, and they liked to sail. He enjoyed building and fixing things and he built five houses during his lifetime. Mr. Gray was an extremely social person and would strike up a conversation wherever he had a chance and no matter where he was. He also liked to garden, go for rides around the area, and he enjoyed his cats Smudge, Shadow, and Chelsea. Besides his wife, he is survived by his brother, Wayne Gray, and his wife, Helen, of Michigan; by his mother-in-law, Peggy McGreevey of Derby; by his brother-in-law, Chuck McGreevey, and his wife, Cindy, of Newport Center; and by his sister-in-law, Pam McGreevey of New Hampshire. He was predeceased by two sisters: Eitha and Vida. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family. , 60, of Derby Line died suddenly on August 9, 2011, in Newport. He was born July 9, 1951 in St. Albans, a son of Sidney and Phyllis (Montgomery) Robarge. Mr. Robarge was formerly employed by Yankee Tool Manufacturing and Century Arms Inc. in St. Albans. Mr. Robarge was brought up in the Burlington-Colchester area and moved to Derby, to be with his daughter, in 2009. He served in the United States Army and retired from the Vermont National Guard as a sergeant after 20 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion in Colchester. He enjoyed playing the drums, fishing, playing pool, and spending time with his dogs, Buffy and Bear. He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Labounty, and her husband, David Labounty Sr. of Derby; two grandchildren: David Labounty Jr. and Danielle Labounty, both of Derby. He is also survived by two brothers: Michael Robarge and his wife, Sue, and Keith Robarge and his wife, Cathy, all of Richford; and by his nieces and nephews: Nathan, Cody, Jennifer, Christy, Scott, and Allan. A graveside service was held on August 15 at the Hillside Cemetery in Richford, with full military honors.

Deane E. Wheeler

, 85, former head of Vermont Job Service of the Department of Employment and Training, died on August 12, 2011, after an extended illness, surrounded by his family. A life-long resident of Newport, he was born on August 25, 1925 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, a son of Henry and Gladys (Churchill) Wheeler, both of Vermont. He attended Newport schools and was a member of Newport High School's Class of 1943. During his early years, he studied piano and percussions and started playing drums professionally at age 15 in both the United States and Canada. His musical career encompassed being music director for Newport Town School, teaching music at Stanstead College, and directing the Canadian Government Cadet Band. He gave private lessons for almost 50 years. He had many memorable experiences playing with jazz musicians in major cities in the U.S. and Canada. He was instrumental in the 1950s, along with some ex-Newport bandsmen, in resurrecting the original Newport City Band. They built the first bandstand where the present stand is now. He entered the U.S. Army in 1945 after a short stint in the Military Police, and joined the 320th Army Band as a drummer at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. His duties entailed playing for military functions, concert dances, Army shows, and parades. He was honorably discharged from the 347th Army Band at Fort Custer, Michigan in 1947. He married Ethel (Etts) Pechtel on February 15, 1947 and returned to Newport to employment at Wheeler's Cut Rate Drug Store. On July 5, 1960 he entered employment for the state of Vermont as an interviewer for the Vermont State Employment Service, moved on to become a vocational counselor and subsequently became office manager in 1965, retiring from service in 1988. During this period, he attended St. Michael's College for work-related studies. During his lifetime, he was an avid sportsman and from an early age a professional fly tyer serving local and out-of-town fishermen. After retirement, he devoted much time to this endeavor as well as fly-casting instruments, and guiding and fish rod repairs, under the name of Deano's Custom Flies. He served early on as a member of the Newport City Harbor Commission before becoming a director, and on the Northern State Correctional Facility advisory board. He was appointed to the Orleans County Development Corps in 1965 and served many years as its vice president and president; at his death, he was a current director. Mr. Wheeler belonged to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the American Legion, Trout and Ducks Unlimited, the United Fly Flyers, Derby Fish and Game Club, N.E. Conservation Group, and the Vermont State Retirement Association. He was very family and church-oriented and enjoyed his grandchildren to a great extent. He is survived by his wife, Ethel (Etts); his son, Kevin, and companion, Bernadette Dewing; his grandchildren, Maylo and Rance Wheeler; and cousins Concetta Cornforth and her husband, Richard, of St. Albans. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 19 at the United Church of Newport with Reverend Martha Peck and Reverend Steve Jungkeit officiating. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Pine Grove Cemetery with full military honors.
