Caroline S. Allen
....show , a Montpelier resident passed away Monday, July 11, 2011 at the Woodridge Nursing Home. She was 98.
A complete obituary with service information will appear in a future edition of the paper.
Anne Hathaway Allen
....show , well-loved resident of Wheelock, died on Monday, May 30 peacefully at home, age 88. Daughter of Harrison Hathaway and Marjorie Hooker Hathaway, Anne was brought up in Bethesda, Maryland. She studied at Stevens College in Missouri and then Finch Junior College, New York City, graduating in 1943.
Always elegant and full of grace, she was proud of her time as a young woman working at Saks Fifth Avenue in Miami Florida as a fashion model. She was also proud of her heritage, being descended from the Rev Thomas Hooker, founder of the colony of Connecticut and being related by marriage to Dame Sibyl Hathaway, Dame of Sark, the tiny feudal island in the English Channel.
In 1946, Anne met and married George William (Bill) Allen, lived for a while in Port Washington, Long Island and then settled in Pomona, NY devoting herself to raising their two children, Eddy and Barbara.
In 1967, the children grown, Anne and Bill moved to Wheelock and both took jobs at Lyndon State College, Bill as English Instructor, Anne as Secretary to the Faculty. Anne was a vital and well-loved member of the staff there for many years.
Anne was a talented artist, exhibiting her fresh and sensitive watercolour paintings around the Northeast Kingdom. She loved being part of "the Monday Painters," a group of artists and friends in the NE Kingdom, meeting at one another's houses. Some of her work will be exhibited in her memory in July in the group's up-coming show at Catamount Arts, St Johnsbury.
But Anne will mostly be remembered for her sunny disposition, her sociability, her love for her family, and her unquenchable interest in everyone she met. Even in her last illness, she loved a steady stream of visitors, "holding court" from her bed as they sat round her. She had an enormous capacity for love - for her family and friends and especially children and babies (not just her own but everyone's) and wanted to know all about them. When daughter Barbara and grand-daughter Frances phoned every week from England, the calls always went on for at least half an hour.
Her other loves were Seinfeld re-runs on television and of course the series "As Time Goes By" from England with Judi Dench. How she loved jokes, like the one she and Bill laughed about: Anne's parents and Bill's had cottages side by side in Florida. When Bill returned from three years in the jungle of New Guinea and received his separation from the military service, both sets of parents obviously encouraged the romance: an "arranged marriage" seemed to be ahead. Anne's parents thought the Allens were rich and Bill's thought the Hathaways were rich. Alas, they were both mistaken, but the marriage turned out beautifully anyway - arranged by parents or not.
She is survived by Bill, her devoted husband, about to celebrate on June 8 their 65 years of marriage; her children, Ed Allen of Vermillion, SD and Barbara Allen Bernard of London, England; her grand-daughter, Frances Todd; and three great-grandchildren, Isla, Oliver, and Finn.
Visiting hours will be at Anne's home at 1294 Rte 122 Friday evening from 5:00 till 7:00 pm. A funeral service will be Saturday, June 4, at 11:00 am in St. Peter's Episcopal Church. The Revs Jeanette McKnight and Robert Castle will officiate.
