ELIZABETH L. POST
....show NAPLES, Fla. - Elizabeth L. Post , 89, died in Naples, Fla. on April 24, 2010, surrounded by her family. Libby was born in Englewood, N.J. on May 7, 1920, the third of Allen and Bess Lindley's three children. She lived in Englewood until 1941, when she married George Cookman, who was killed in action in the Pacific in 1943. Libby then married Bill Post in 1944, with whom she shared the next 65 years of her life in a wonderful, loving marriage which, along with her children, was the central element of her life, and was a source of inspiration to all who knew them. Libby and Bill and their growing family lived in Bogota, Colombia in the early 1950s, then moved to Rye, N.Y., where they raised their four children, then on to Waterbury Center, Vt., then to Marathon, Fla., and finally to Bentley Village, in Naples. In each place they lived, they created a wonderful life for themselves, and, especially, made lifelong friends who were a great source of pleasure to them through the years. Libby was the granddaughter-in-law of Emily Post. In the early 1960s, she assumed responsibility for carrying on the Post family tradition of writing and teaching about etiquette. Libby quickly became, and remained for the next 30 years, America's leading authority on etiquette. Six times she revised and modernized the classic "Etiquette," originally written by Emily Post. She authored books on weddings, children's etiquette, entertaining and others, and she was in great demand on television and radio shows, where the ideas of an etiquette expert were needed. In the early 1990s, Libby cut back on her responsibilities as an author and authority, yielding to her daughter-in-law, Peggy, and a little later, to her daughter Cindy Post Senning, her son Peter, and her daughter-inlaw Tricia. They have expanded the Emily Post Institute, and continue to this day as the country's leading etiquette writers, teachers and experts. Libby was extremely proud of this succession to a fourth generation of Posts working in the etiquette field, and even more so now that a fifth generation has joined the firm, in the persons of Libby's grandchildren, Anna Post, Lizzie Post, and Dan Post Senning. Libby was a gifted artist. Her paintings, especially her later watercolors, grace the walls of her family's and friend's homes, as well as many, many collectors who purchased her works at the various art shows at which she exhibited over the years. She was very generous about donating works to charity auctions where her paintings always sold well. Libby was also an accomplished golfer and an avid fisherman. One year, she landed the largest tarpon caught by a woman in the United States that year. She was particularly proud of the day she and Bill each registered a so-called grand slam on the flats of the Florida Keys, a rare feat for one person, much less for two in the same boat on the same day. Libby and Bill were for many years avid SCUBA divers and made numerous trips to exotic parts of the world to pursue the clearest waters and the most colorful fish. Libby was a straightforward, practical lady who could be counted on to say what she thought, and her advice was always worth listening to. She was the matriarch of a large family over which she presided with grace, dignity, caring and loyalty. The large family gatherings at Christmas at Libby and Bill's house at North Hill in Waterbury Center, Vt. were family highlights every year. Libby will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Libby is survived by her wonderful husband, Bill; her four children and their spouses, Allen Post and Peggy, Bill Post, Jr. and Maureen, Cindy Senning and John, and Peter Post and Tricia. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, their spouses and one greatgrandson, Casey Post, Jeep Post and his wife, Jessica, Peter Post, his wife, Elizabeth Archangeli, and greatgrandson, Alexander, Jill Ravey, Dan Senning, Will Senning, Anna Post, and Lizzie Post. She was predeceased in 1987 by her grandson, Paul. She is also survived by her niece, Betsy Lindley Bird, and her nephews, Dan Lindley and Pete Lindley, and by numerous great nephews and nieces. Libby's family wishes to express its gratitude to the wonderful nurses and staff at the Bentley Extended Care Facility, who provided such good and tender care during her last weeks. They are truly compassionate and professional people. A service celebrating Libby's life will be held in Waterbury Center, Vt. on a date and time to be determined. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Waterbury Congregational Church, UCC, 8 North Main Street, Waterbury, VT 05676 or to the Helen Day Art Center, 5 School Street, PO Box 411, Stowe, VT 05672.

ADDISON POWELL
....show SHELBURNE - Addison Powell, 89, passed away Monday evening, to the sounds of Vivaldi and The Beatles, and in the loving company of his three children. A film and stage actor, a WWII navigator, and a son of New England, Powell had lived in Vermont for 22 years, most recently in Shelburne Bay, an independent living community. He loved country walks, landscape painting, good books and a good joke, not to mention Handel on his DVD player and a BLT from Burlington Bay Market. To sit in the cool shadow of birches and pines on the porch of his summer cottage on Lake Champlain, built by his grandfather in 1900, was his great pleasure. He enjoyed a long career as a New York City-based stage, screen and TV actor. He played the CIA heavy in "Three Days of the Condor", a 1970s-era thriller, and his photograph, face to face with that other actor, Robert Redford (Redford's gun is nuzzled under Powell's chin) has appeared around the world. He played the father of the sizzling Jean Seberg in "In the French Style'; a hip bank robber in 'The Thomas Crown Affair' with Steve McQueen; a starchy Admiral Nimitz in "MacArthur", with Gregory Peck; and a hard-boiled detective in "Contract on Cherry Street" with Frank Sinatra. He won an Obie for his performance as Willie Oban in "The Iceman Cometh" at Circle in the Square, a production that included Jason Robards and Peter Falk. On stage, he received fine notices in 'Coastal Disturbances', which featured the Broadway debut of Annette Bening. He did television turns on "Gunsmoke" and "Bob Newhart" and appeared on the first episodes of "Law and Order" and "Mod Squad." He also played the evil Dr. Lang in 'Dark Shadows', a 1960s TV camp classic that years later garnered him the occasional letter from the slightly obsessed fan. He always was thrilled they remembered. Born in Belmont, Mass. in 1921, the son of school teachers, he graduated from Boston University and joined the Army Air Force. Based in East Anglia, he flew 30 missions as a navigator in a B-17. After the war, he graduated from Yale Drama School. In 1950, he married a Michigan girl, Bunnie Rowley and they raised three children in the tightly knit vertical block association that is an Upper West Side apartment building. As his was a life and not a Hollywood movie, he knew joy and disappointments, and out of the complications of the latter came his longstanding membership in the fine fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous. Bunnie died in 1995 and he never remarried. He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Mary Powell and Mark Brooks of South Hero, Julie and Richard Elmore of Westford, and Michael Powell and Evelyn Intondi of Brooklyn. His younger and beloved brother, Edward, also survives him; as do his eight grand- children, Katie, Anthony, Michael, Nicholas, Tony, Aidan, Calvin, and Alexandra. They were his diamonds. Those wishing to make a donation in his memory may do so to either the Sudan Development Foundation 139 Elmwood Avenue Burlington, VT or the Veterans Bedside Network, 10 Fiske Place, Room 328, Mt. Vernon, NY 10550.
PLATT RUGAR POWELL
....show , MD SHELBURNE - Dr. Platt Rugar Powell, 97, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and skilled surgeon, died peacefully in the presence of his devoted wife of 69 years and loving daughter on Aug. 9, 2010 at The Arbors in Shelburne. Platt was born to Maude Rugar and Homer L. Powell on Oct. 9, 1912 in Milton. He and his brother, Homer, grew up in Milton, where they helped at their father's grocery store. Platt entered the University of Vermont as an engineering student but then shifted to premedicine and received the degrees of Bachelor of Science in 1936 and Doctor of Medicine in 1939. After interning at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Philadelphia, Platt was appointed to a Teaching Fellowship in Pathology at the University of Vermont. On May 3, 1941 Platt married Marion Hill, a stunning RN who had graduated in l939 from Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. In 1942, Platt was called to duty serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as Captain/Major Chief of Urology 39th Station Hospital in England, returning home in 1945. Platt settled in Burlington and began his Urology residency training first at Morrisania Hospital in New York City and later at the University Of Vermont College Of Medicine. In 1952 he was certified in Urology by the American Board of Urology. Platt's teaching appointments at the College of Medicine began in 1950 as instructor in Urology and was appointed Professor of Clinical Urology, dividing his time between teaching, clinical research and practice until 1977. Dr. Powell was Chairman of the Division from 1953 to 1968 and Chief of the Urological Services at the Medical Center Hospital during the same period. He held appointments as consultant in Urology in a number of other hospitals in Vermont and New York. What Platt treasured most about his career was his relationship with his patients. He and his colleagues spent countless hours giving the best care possible to help heal thousands of individuals. Platt enjoyed a longtime association with great friends in an investors group, the Wizard Inc. He enjoyed many years as a member of the Ethan Allen Club. Platt and Marion supported the University Of Vermont College Of Medicine and earned the recognition as a member of the Medical Ira Allen Benefactor Society. Platt and Marion raised three children, Lyn, Ann and John. Their first move to Burlington was to Oakledge Manor, then owned by Marion's parents, Fred and Edith Hill. They then spent many years in a home on nearby Prospect Pkwy. When the last child went to college, they moved to their 'dream house' on Spear St., where Platt created beautiful vegetable and flower gardens (gladiolus being among his favorite flower). He raised strawberries the size of silver dollars. As a couple, Platt and Marion enjoyed golf, tennis and time at their lake house at Clay Point. At the age of 65, Platt retired from his impressive career. He and Marion split their time between Meadow Run, in Williston and their home in Stuart, Fla. Platt is survived by his wife, Marion Hill Powell; daughter, Ann Powell and Ann's children, Michael Dow, PHD, Sara Dow Chrisman, MD; son, John Platt Powell and wife, Christine McLean Powell and their children, Natalie A. Powell and Ian M. Powell; son-in-law, Andrew Urquhart, PHD., and his children, Marion MacDonald, Dorothy Urquhart. His first born daughter, Carolyn Powell Urquhart preceded him in 2007. There are three great grandchildren, Angus MacDonald, George Urquhart and Coralline Chrisman. Nephews are David Powell, Dr. Richard Powell and Fred Hodgdon. The nieces, Christa Duffy, Elizabeth Stanziola and Roberta Minick. The family would like to thank the supportive community in The Lodge at Shelburne Bay. We are most grateful for the extraordinarily tender care of Dr. Powell during his last years while at The Arbors in Shelburne. Music and humor were at Platt's core. As a young man he played the saxophone in a band, "The Moonbeam Serenaders." At many gatherings we were entertained by his sax or his songs. We know St. Peter heard Platt coming because his approach was always heralded by his cheery whistling. Platt will be dearly missed; he changed lives in profound ways. His kindness for others gave comfort to so many. A memorial service will be held at the College Street Congregational Church in Burlington at 10 a.m. on Saturday Oct. 9, on Platt's 98th birthday. Platt and Marion would be honored by any donation made in his name to the University of Vermont College of Medicine.
