JOSEPH "JOE" JOACHIM PALARDY
....show ALBURGH / VENISE, QUEBEC - Joe Palardy, most recently of Venise, Quebec, died on July 20, 2010, after several years of declining health. Born Nov. 17, 1924, he was the second eldest of ten children born to Emile Palardy and Madora (D'arsigny) Palardy of St. Damase, Quebec. Joe began earning his livelihood in 1952 from dairy farming and sugaring in Enosburg Falls back in the days of sap tanks on horse drawn sleighs. Joe and his wife, Rejane, discovered the wonders of farming on the more level terrains of Alburgh on Lake Champlain from 1963-2005, when they retired to Venise in Quebec. While in Alburgh, he enjoyed volunteering on several community boards, and was once Regional Chairman of NFO (National Farmers Organization) as an activist for better milk pricing. Combining his Canadian sensibility with Yankee (VT) ingenuity enabled him to view opportunities with a unique perspective. He was an innovator and was unafraid to accept new concepts. For instance, he was the first farmer in the Northeastern United States to purchase a large round hay bailer. Joe and Rejane collaborated on many ventures, both agricultural and non-agricultural. His biggest joy was to sit at the head of the large family table during the holidays, reflecting on his life's blessings. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rejane (Gareau) Palardy, currently of Venise, Quebec. He also leaves behind six children, Michelle and Dean Creller of Cocoa, Fla., Martha Soule of South Burlington, Guy and Susan Palardy of Alburgh, Sylvia Jensen of Isle La Motte, Evelyn and Peter J.R. Martin of St. Albans, and Sarah Harrington of Campbell Hall, N.Y; 13 grandchildren, Andrew and Beth Creller of Huston, TX., Josip Martin and his fiancé, Shannon Garcia, of St. Albans, Marc Palardy and his fiancé, Randi Martineau, of Chazy, N.Y., Nicole Palardy and her fiancée, Joseph Ducharme, of San Antonio, TX., Allison Jensen, Danielle Palardy, Jared Palardy, Ian Jensen, and Morgan Soule, all of Burlington, Martin Jensen of Isle La Motte, and Kiersten, Chelsea, and Taylor Harrington of Campbell Hall, N.Y.; and one beloved great-grandson to honor his memory, Sean Palardy of Chazy, N.Y. HILLEL S. PANITCH, M.D.
....show WILLISTON - Beloved husband, father, and physician Hillel S. Panitch of Williston, died in Vermont Respite House on Dec. 23, 2010. Son of the late Dr. Max Panitch and Rose Panitch of Nassau, N.Y., Hill was born on June 23, 1940. He was a 1962 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wesleyan University, where his degree in French led to his being awarded a Fulbright Scholarship. A year in Lyon left him with fluent French, a taste for fine wine, and the ability to ski with finesse. Hill went on to graduate from New York University School of Medicine in 1967 and did his residency in Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco. He completed a post- doctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University and was senior staff fellow in neuroimmunology at the National Institutes of Health. In 1982 he was appointed Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco and, in 1988, Professor of Neurology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He arrived in Vermont in 2000, where as Professor of Neurology at the UVM College of Medicine, he continued the pursuit that guided his entire professional life - the identification and treatment of multiple sclerosis. Known for his pioneering work in the field of MS, Hill guided the establishment of the Multiple Sclerosis Center at the University of Vermont and developed clinical trials for a wide range of drugs that are now standard treatment for MS. His published work, numbering hundreds of articles, appeared in leading journals and was recognized nationally and inter- nationally. Among his most recent honors, he received the 2010 Partners in Progress Award from the Vermont office of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's Greater New England Chapter. Just weeks before his death he was selected as Senior Researcher of the Year by the University of Vermont and Fletcher Allen Health Care in recognition of the depth and breadth of his work. Diagnosed with stage IV melanoma in November 2009, Hill lived his final year with the same devotion to his family and passion for his work that characterized his entire life. His wry sense of humor, sincere modesty, and commitment to his patients were known to all who worked with him and loved him. He took the time to learn and care about his patients' lives and was readily available to guide them through the challenges of MS. Hill's scientific curiosity remained with him even through the course of his disease, leading him once to record, with one hand, the progress of a seizure as it occurred on the other side of his body. Hill considered himself a man easily pleased with what he found around him. Once asked what made him happy, he cited teaching neurology residents, sharing a glass of wine with his wife before dinner, making a correct diagnosis, and having a full tank of gas in his car. More recently, he would have added the smiles of his grandchildren to the list. Being notoriously modest, he had only one request for his obituary - that it be short. This was one request his family found difficult to honor. Hill's family wishes to give recognition to all of his colleagues, and especially the women he most recently worked with, mentored, and admired: Angela Applebee, Patty Krusinski, Yang MaoDraayer, Sandy McGrath, and Amy Savage. You provided the support essential for Hill's work at the MS Center, and you were there for him with help and compassion throughout this last difficult year. Hill leaves behind his wife of 45 years and lifelong companion, Adine; daughter Judy, son-in-law Andy Hart, and grandson Gabriel Hart, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; daughter Sharon, son-in-law Rick Hecht, and grand- children Zoe, Toby, and Alexander Hecht, of Burlington; and sisters and brother Yetta Trovato, Deborah Panitch, and William Panitch, with their families. Hill was interred at a private ceremony at Hebrew Holy Cemetery in South Burlington, with Rabbi Joshua Chasan of Ohavi Zedek presiding. A gathering of Hill's colleagues, patients, and friends to share memories and honor his life will be arranged and announced soon. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a cause of choice or to a fund that will provide training in the field of neurotherapeutics: The Panitch Fund-UVM College of Medicine, Courtyard at Given, 89 Beaumont Ave., Burlington, VT 05405: Attention Medical Development Office.

MIDDLEBURY -- Francette (Renavent) Paretti
....show , 97, died on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at The Lodge in Middlebury. At her side were her daughter, Lynne Smaldone, and her son, Michael Paretti. Fran was born Francoise LeDuc on Dec. 13, 1912, in Paris. She spent her first years in the Montmartre section of the city. She was adopted by the actress, Gabrielle Perrier, when she was two years old and later lived in London. When Fran was one month shy of four years old, she left on the ship "New York" from Liverpool with her grandmother, Elise de Becker, arriving at the port of New York in Nov., 1916. Her mother was already in the United States raising money for the French cause in World War I. In Oct., 1917, Fran participated in a patriotic pageant at an estate in Huntington, Long Island, to raise money for the American Red Cross. The event included five hundred actors and actresses and was attended by four thousand people. The New York Herald featured a photo captioned, "Miss Francette Perrier, the youngest actress, four years old." Fran later asked John Philip Sousa, who was conducting the military band that day, to play a sad song to which she improvised a dance. Her mother married the French actor, Georges Renavent, and Fran led an interesting and, at times, challenging life for a child, surrounded by artists and marked by numerous moves and a necessary frugality. While living on Long Island, her parents converted a chicken coop into living quarters for their friend, the director Preston Sturges. The family later moved to an apartment on 33rd Street in Manhattan, a time when her parents often performed in Broadway plays, and then to a small farm in Salt Point, New York. Fran was twelve when her mother died of tuberculosis and her father remarried, leaving her on the farm with just her grandmother. After the sale of the farm, there were more moves that ultimately led to an apartment in Poughkeepsie when she was in her teens. It was there that Fran first met Sam Paretti at a Mt. Carmel Church festival. Years later they would meet again at an outdoor dance pavilion in Woodcliff Park. They were married on Nov. 12 1933, and had seventy-six years of life together until Sam's death on Jan 24, 2010. They lived most of their lives in Poughkeepsie. Fran was devoted to her children. She sewed dresses for Lynne and knit warm hats and gloves for all the family. She was a fine cook and could create memorable meals out of simple ingredients. She loved to bake and her apple pies were unsurpassed. Fran was also an exceptional gardener, and the family home at 40 Arnold Road, where they lived for over 40 years, had rock gardens and roses whose beauty would often stop passersby. She was a lover of nature, an admirer of sunsets, and a knowledgeable birder. Fran was proud of her work at the YWCA pool with special needs children and her work as manager of The Junior League Bargain Box which used all its profits to fund community services. After her children were grown, Fran loved traveling to New York City and around the Hudson Valley on day trips with friends. She started a French club at her house and helped others acquire the language. Though Fran didn't return to France for almost sixty years, her French was so impeccable that when she did return she was taken for a native. In Nov. of 1996, Fran and Sam moved to Middlebury to be near their son. Fran continued to garden and surrounded their condo at 32 Twin Circles with perennials. In a plot behind the garage she grew tomatoes, herbs and cucumbers. Fran also continued her love affair with books. She treasured the Ilsley Library and read widely. She was an avid Scrabble player and often scored over 400 using strategy and a great vocabulary acquired through her reading. She also regularly competed the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle. Fran and Sam were music lovers and eclectic in their tastes. They loved going to recitals at Middlebury College, to operas at the Flynn Theater, and to the Festival on the Green. They were regulars at the music programs offered at The Lodge. Fran and Sam were grateful for all the friends they made in Middlebury and for the special birthday, anniversary and holiday celebrations full of laughter and good company. Fran dealt with many physical challenges during her last five years, but she faced them with courage, stoicism and a fighting spirit. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers for their devoted commitment to Fran in the last few years and to those at hospice who so greatly helped in her final months. Fran's memory is cherished by a loving family; daughter Lynne Smaldone and her husband, Jerry, of Arlington, Va.; son Michael and his wife, Tina Endicott, of Weybridge; granddaughter Lisa Paretti LaChapelle and her husband, Todd; grandsons Matthew and Gregory Smaldone; step-grandsons, Ethan and Evan West; and one great-grandchild, Emmett LaChapelle. Contributions in memory of Fran may be made to Addison County Home Health and Hospice, PO Box 754, Middlebury, Vt., 05753.
SAMUEL PARETTI MIDDLEBURY - Samuel Paretti
....show , 99, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010 at The Lodge in Middlebury. At his side was his daughter, Lynne Smaldone, his son, Michael Paretti, and his loving wife of 76 years, Francette. Sam was born Salvatore Paratore on March 12, 1910 in the village of Motta Camastra in the province of Messina, Sicily. His father died in an accident when he was an infant, and at age three Sam left for the United States with his mother, Carmela, aboard the ship Italia, arriving at Ellis Island in Apr. 1913. They were welcomed to America by his uncle Vincent and lived in New York City before moving to Yonkers and later Hastings, N.Y. Carmela married Michael Chiseri and settled in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where Sam was raised with his brothers, Salvatore and Joseph, and sister, Rose. Sam loved school and was an outstanding student and an avid reader. An old friend told of regularly finding him in the winter in a nook behind the kitchen stove with a book in hand. Sam was a hard worker all his life and had fond recollections of walking to the ferry as a young boy, making the crossing of the Hudson River to Highland, and picking berries all day. At seaon's end, the berry farm owner gave his step-father Sam's earnings, which helped the family through the cold months ahead. Sam remained a lover of berry picking all his life, and often took his children and grandchildren along to his special spot above the Hudson River where he picked his family's favorite, blackcaps. Sam first met Francette Renavent at a church festival in Mount Carmel Square in Poughkeepsie. A few years later they met again at an outdoor dance pavilion in Woodcliff Park. They were married on Nov. 12, 1933, and resided in Poughkeepsie until 1996, when they moved to Middlebury to be near their son. Sam was a talented athlete and pitched for the Progress Lodge baseball team which was made up exclusively of Italian-Americans. He later became a fine bowler and golfer, and at age 70 learned to cross-country ski. His athletic ability was exceeded only by his modesty. Though a quiet man, Sam was a wonderful storyteller. He loved going for walks with his children and could make the woods of the Hudson Valley come alive with tales of colonial times. His grandchildren still warmly recall his many animal tales filled with amusing characters. Sam valued education. Though he had to leave school after tenth grade to help his step-father support the family, he remained a lifelong learner. He was also active in local politics and once led a citizens' committee to ensure that the new Poughkeepsie High School would be built in a location more central to the city. Sam held many jobs over the years, but his last, as an engineer at IBM, made him most proud. He was better able to care for his family and provide his children with the college education he never had. In his later years, Sam dealt with many physical challenges with grace and courage. He not only kept his spirits up, he lifted the spirits of others, as he shared his singing in English and Italian with family and caregivers even in the final days of his life. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers for their loving commitment to Sam in the last few years. Sam's memory is cherished by a grateful family: his wife, Francette, of Middlebury, daughter, Lynne Smaldone and her husband, Jerry, of Arlington, Va.; son Michael, and his wife, Tina Endicott, of Weybridge; granddaughter, Lisa Paretti LaChapelle and her husband, Todd; grandsons, Gregory and Matthew Smaldone; step-grandsons, Ethan and Evan West; and one greatgrandchild, Emmett LaChapelle. He is also survived by a brother, Salvatore Chiseri, and several nieces and nephews. He leaves a legacy of love, integrity and, most importantly, family. Family was always first for Sam, and he made sure his family knew that, especially on holidays or special occasions when he would raise his glass and toast them in his native language, "A la famiglia!" Contributions in memory of Sam may be made to Elderly Services Incorporated, PO Box 581, Middlebury, Vt. 05753.
