LOIS CRABTREE NOONAN
....show ADDISON - Lois Crabtree Noonan of Addison died peacefully on March 29, 2010. She was 95, or as she would have said, "not even 96." Well-known for her many years as Director of the Bixby Memorial Library in Vergennes, she did claim to be a Vermonter, since she had lived here since 1937 only. Born on Dec. 15, 1914, daughter of Charles and Anna Sinclair Crabtree, in Gardner, Mass., she graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where she met and married Frederick W. Noonan. She moved to Addison on the condition that an indoor bathroom would be installed. From early on, she was active in the local service organizations, being matron of Addison Juvenile Grange for several years and a leader of the 4-H Club. She served as an officer of the Home Demonstration Club at both local and county level and helped organize the first Red Cross Blood Drawings in Addison County. As an integral part of the Congregational Church in Vergennes, she taught Sunday School for many years. She was President of the Vergennes Women's Club and was active in the Vergennes Garden Club as well. During her career at the Bixby, she was a member of the Vermont Library Association. In 1957 she joined the staff of the Bixby Memorial Library and became Director in 1966, a position she held until retiring after 46 years of service. A large group gathered to honor her at her retirement party in 2003 and the Mayor declared Lois Noonan Day in Vergennes. Under her guidance the Library became a friendly community destination, moving from an austere silent reading place to a comfortable gathering center for adults and children alike, alive with her innovations - story hours, art exhibits, book sales, concerts and lectures. She wrote weekly columns about the Library for local papers and appeared regularly on the radio reviewing books and exhibits. Circulation increased, expanding to music, videos, and audio books, and the patron loyalty she fostered brought not only ancillary collections, such as Indian artifacts, but increased the budget through donations for memorial books. Facilities for the disabled were added and the Library entered the computer age in her time. In 1995 the Trustees of the Bixby re-named the Vermont Room, housing an impressive collection of Vermontiana, in her honor and her portrait hangs there now. After her retirement she continued to volunteer and could sometimes be found in the Lois Noonan Room, putting. things in order. She was pleased to be honored for her service to the community by the American Legion Post No. 14 of Vergennes, by the Addison Northwest School District, by the City of Vergennes, by the Vermont Department of Libraries, and by the Rhoda Forrand Chapter of the D.A.R. She was, of course, a constant reader, but also traveled extensively, beginning in Europe with her husband and eventually visiting over 40 countries after she was 70, climbing the Great Wall of China, shopping in the souks of Damascus and Istanbul, having tea by a Bedouin campfire in the Arabian desert, and viewing the glaciers at the tip of Argentina, always with her son, daughter, and friends. She rode her first elephant at the age of 80, donned trousers for the first time for a safari in Zimbabwe at 85, and traveled by camel cart in Rajasthan at the age of 90. At home she liked to explore and discover the tamer pleasures of Vermont, and she remained a favorite of her children's friends from college, London, New York, and Montreal as they regularly enjoyed her hospitality in Addison. Her daughter Ellen, a psychotherapist in London, England, and her husband, Frederick, a long-time dairy and beef farmer, also a breeder of Morqan horses, pre-deceased her. Active to the very end, she spent the last year of her life content and well-cared for at the Lodge at Otter Creek in Middlebury with her cat Thai. She is survived by her son Frederick William of Addison and New York City, her older sister Anita Ray of Baldwinville, Mass., and sisters-in-law Mary Noonan of Sandy Springs, Md. and Nancy Noonan of York, Pa. She cherished the kindness of her several nieces and nephews and their families - Katherine Phelps of St. Johnsbury, Donald and Lois Ray of Fitzwilliam, N.H., Joyce and David Ray of Warwick, Mass., Polly and Ron Gauthier of North Brookfield, Mass., and Charles Crabtree, Jr., Richard Noonan and Michele Wilson of Belmont, Mass., Thomas and JoAnn Noonan of New Milford, Conn., Douglas and Adriana Albini Noonan of Genoa, Italy, and Martha Noonan and Barbara Beaverson of York, Pa. plus dear grandnieces and nephews. Her life was especially brightened in her final years by her close friend Mary Cheney of Charlotte. Memorial services will be held at the Congregational Church at 11 a.m. on Apr. 24, with burial in Addison following. Everyone will be welcome at the house on 22a afterwards. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bixby Memorial Library, 258 Main Street, Vergennes 05491.

GEORGE OLGYAY, PhD.
....show WINOOSKI - Dr. George Olgyay of Winooski, died Nov. 4, 2010 in the Respite House, after a two year battle with cancer. His wife, Maria and eldest daughter, Emese were by his side. George was born in Gyor, Hungary on April 20, 1930. His youth was spent largely in Budapest. His high school years (gymnasium) were taken with the Benedictines in Hungary and Germany, graduating in 1948. During World War II, his father served as Lt. Colonel in the Hungarian army and was killed in 1942. After the war, he, his mother and grandparents became refugees in the West rather than living under Soviet rule. The family immigrated to the United States in 1950, settling in Cleveland, OH. In 1951, George was drafted into the United States Army and served two years in the Korean War. After his armed services, he returned to his academic studies, graduating from Case Western Reserve in 1955. Later, he graduated with a master's degree from Columbia University and completed his PhD in Political Science at the University of Notre Dame in 1961. George met Maria Smutko in Cleveland, and they were married in 1957 at Saint Stephen's Church in NYC. George accepted a teaching position in the Department of Political Science at Saint Michael's College in 1961. He taught 38 enjoyable years before being awarded Professor Emeritus Status. During this time, he also served terms as Chairman of the Political Science Department and played a major role in developing the Department, both in size and curriculum. George was, appropriate to his background, the epitome of the European professorship. Not only was he well trained and a master of his material, but he also related to students in a unique fashion. He always referred to them as "ladies and gentlemen" and he made a concerted effort to treat them with respect as budding scholars. The fact George loved teaching and excelled at it was born out of his designation as an "Outstanding Educator in America" and his selection for an Appreciation Award in 1998. Many of his students have remained in contact with him over the years and they have been instrumental in creating an endowment fund in his name. He was proud to belong to an organization known as the Hungarian/American Coalition. He was also a member of the Catholic movement for Intellectual and Cultural Affairs, PAX Romana, and the American Association for the Study of Hungarian History. He was a member and founder of the Hungarian Boy Scouts, the "Homeless Eagles". George and Maria greatly enjoyed their life in Vermont and their 53 years of marriage, after their youth in war-ravaged Europe. In the Vermont setting, they found their lives enriched by many good friends over the years and by their nuclear family. George is survived by his wife, Maria; daughter, Emese Madigan, her husband, Michael, and their son, Patrick; a son, Zoltan, his wife, Jill, and their daughter, Cassie; and Maria Hobson, husband, Ken and their sons, Kenny and Tyler. The family would like to thank Dr. Joe Haddock and Margaret, Dr. John Fitzgerald, Donna and Lynn, for their many years of taking care of George and also the wonderful people at the VNA, Hospice and VT Respite House for their help and care. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Chapel in Colchester on Friday, Nov. 12, 2010 at 9 a.m. Interment will be at the Merrill Cemetery. A reception celebrating George's life will follow in Alliot Hall of St. Michael's College.
