DONALD G. MINA
....show ADDISON/PANTON - Donald G. Mina, age 65, died on Monday, June 28, 2010 from complications from a stroke that occurred in March, 2010. Though he was a resident of Leesburg, Fla., he spent many memorable years in Vermont. Don was born in Stratford, Conn., and was the son of George and Viola (Wuagon) Mina. In 1948, he moved to Massapequa Park, on Long Island, N.Y., and lived there until 1963, where he graduated from high school and married his high school sweetheart, Vicki (Thompson) Mina. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for four years and he trained at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, and then he was stationed in Germany for two years. While in Europe, he and Vicki and their daughter, Marybeth, toured the European continent and visited relatives in Italy. They would return to Long Island where he was stationed at the Westhampton Air Force Base on Long Island until 1967 when he was honorably discharged. Thereafter, he enrolled at Hofstra University and earned his BA degree in business in 1972. He entered the insurance industry in 1972 and earned a significant reputation as a re-insurance underwriting expert in a very complicated and competitive business environment. Though he lived in Cornwall, N.Y., he worked in New York City and Boston, Mass. until 1990 when he was medically retired because of rheumatoid arthritis. In 1991, Don married Sue (Heim) Mina of New Canaan, Conn. He and Sue lived there until 1998 when they moved to Leesburg, Fla. Though most individuals would have slowed down because of his medical condition, this was not Donald's makeup. Though he could not work any longer in an office, that did not stop him from traveling to the family Vermont home on Lake Carmi and spending summers with his wife and grandchildren. Additionally, through the ensuing years, Don would go through more than 12 medical operations in replacing body joints that were ravaged by the rheumatoid arthritis. In spite of his medical infirmities, he found time to fulfill a lifelong dream of earning his private pilot's license in 1994 after being trained at the Swanton Vermont Pilot Center and also in Danbury, Conn. He enjoyed the freedom of flying and he was a certified pilot until his passing. In 2000, the family camp on Lake Carmi was sold after 50 years of wonderful memories. Not to be away from Vermont long, in 2004 he returned to assist his brother, Bruce, in developing a four-acre grape vineyard in Addison. As the vineyard overseer, though he was medically limited, Don exhibited an unbridled passion when it came to "his grape vines" and the vineyard. His commitment and excellence in knowing all he could know about grape growing helped develop a first-class vineyard in Addison, which gained the respect and admiration of other vintners in Vermont. In 2008, after another 125 acres was purchased by his brother on Route 22A in Panton, Don would oversee the development on Panton Hills Vineyards with the initial planting of four acres. The first harvest is scheduled for this September and though he will not be there with us, his memory and passion will always be there. Don's other passion was being a grandfather and he loved returning to Florida and Massachusetts. He was known as "Papa" and he will be sorely missed by Samantha, Jake, Max, Ben, Gretchen, Jack, Riley, Tegan, Alyssa, Nicole and Katherine. He leaves behind his wife Sue (Suzanne) of 18 years; his daughters, Marybeth and her husband, Dean, of Foxboro, Mass.; and Michelle and her husband, Harry, of Hanson, Mass.; his son, Mark and his wife, Stacy, of Mansfield, Mass.; his stepdaughter, Sue Gladu and her husband, Leo, of Floral City, Fla; his brother, Bruce and his wife, Gloria, of Roslyn Heights, N.Y.; and his niece, Karen (Mina) Diaz and her husband, Mike, of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX; and grandniece, Olivia; and his nephew, Robert and his wife, Lynda, of West Chester, Pa.; and grandniece, Kathryn; eleven grandchildren; and many cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Missisquoi St., Enosburg Falls with Rev. Daniel Jordan officiating. KATHLEEN MCFEETERS MOORE
....show SHELBURNE / CHAPLIN, Conn. - Kathleen McFeeters Moore, known as Kay, died Monday night, the 13th of Sept., in the Vermont Respite House, attended by dear friends and family. Kay was born April 20, 1922, the second child of Ruth Whiting and Wilbur Ewert McFeeters, at home, in Sheldon. She attended the same neighborhood one room schoolhouse as her father had, then went on to graduate from Montpelier Seminary Preparatory School, and the University of Vermont, in 1945. She married Dean R. Moore, and, while raising three children, lived in Vermont, Ohio, and Connecticut. Kay's professional path was informed by having grown up in a home where family, friends, and strangers were welcomed to stay for dinner, or for years, if that was their need. She began a career in Social Work in the late 40's with the Vermont Department of Social Welfare, traveling miles over remote dirt roads to reach her clients. As her family grew, Kay left full time employment, but continued to be an active volunteer, primarily in Public Health settings. Later, divorced, and with her children in school, Kay returned to a professional position with the State of Connecticut at the Dempsey Center, in Putnam, a setting which remained an important part of her life for the next 30 years. As a Social Worker and Director of her department, she was involved in the growth of the agency, taught in academic Social Work programs, and made many dear, life long friends. While retiring at age 73, she continued to volunteer with agency clients until she was 80. In retirement, Kay also became an avid walker, rarely missing her 3-mile daily routine. She enjoyed theatre, concerts, and birding with friends, and was an enthusiastic fan of the UConn women's basketball team. A dear, playful, and loving friend, mother, grand- mother, daughter, and sister, Kay was also an outspoken humanitarian, and a scholar of life with many interests. She was elegant and down to earth, with a delightful, sometimes startling, wit. Two generations of children grew up captivated by Kay's stories of her childhood and readings from her favorite books. They also loved her soporific backrubs at bedtime. Over the years, all of her children referred to her as their best friend. Surviving Kay, and keeping her memory alive, are three children and their families: Becky Moore of Shelburne, her husband, David Hedden, and sons, Anu and Will; Bob Moore of Sheldon, his son, Jordan, and daughters, Erin and Danielle; and Kathleen Moore of Cambridge, Mass., and her son, Jackson. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, John Moore, and his wife, Gina Lisi, of Woodstock; cousins, Elinor DeWildt, of Alfred, ME, and John Whiting and his wife, Carolyn, of Enosburg; and many friends, including sorority sister, Jo Davies, who was with her at the end. In addition to her parents, Kay was predeceased by her older brother, Reginald Monroe McFeeters, in 1984. While Kay's wish for intervention to prevent years of lingering through the tragic course of Alzheimer's Disease could not be legally granted, the kindness of caregivers at Shelburne Bay Senior Living, and her final, peaceful week under the care of Dr. Zail Berry and the staff at the Vermont Respite House, have been a comfort. A committed recycler who always regretted not having gone to medical school, Kay has donated her corporeal remains to the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Memorial donations may be sent in honor of Kay Moore to the Vermont Land Trust, 8 Bailey Avenue, Montpelier, VT 05602, honoring her love of her home state and its quality of life. A gathering for family and friends will take place on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at the home of her daughter in Shelburne. A memorial reception will be held at the Vanilla Bean in Pomfret, Conn. on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010 at 5 p.m.
