In 2004, he assumed his current position : director of administrative systems integration and effectiveness in Library and Information Services. On several occasions, Ron and his wife Janet served as a host family to international students at the College. He loved local history and was a supporter of local artists. Ron also had a unique closeness with his son Roy. They celebrated each other's lives, whether Roy was close to home or far away. Ron was an adventurerexplorer at heart. He loved travelnot only the experience of it but the fun of planning, organizing, and anticipating the adventure, which often resulted in beautiful photographs. He was an avid journal writer and meticulous record keeper always. He loved the history of film making and maintained this interest throughout his life. He also had a playful, funloving, mischievous side to his personality. He loved masterminding an ingenious, but good-natured practical joke. Kathy opened up her home to her and adjusted her life to make sure her mother was comfotable and safe, she also had very little free-time, but never wavered with her decision to honor a promise to her mom never to put her in a nursing home. The life experience, treasured and special moments of the last 20 months was critical when it came to Joyce's final moments, where she was surrounded by her loving and caring family, when Joyce told everyone she loved them one by one. She leaves behind three daughters, Karen Stanton of Danby, Kim McCullough of Rutland Town, Kathy McKinlay and husband, Bill, of Winooski; and one son, Kevin Stanton and wife, Sue, of Tualatin, Ore.; six grandchildren, Bill McKinlay Jr. and wife, Kelly, of Bernardsville, N.J., Joshua Eugair of West Rutland, Jayson Eugair of Rutland, Ryan McKinlay of Winooski, Trevor McCullough of Clarendon, and Ashley McCullough of Rutland Town; four great- grandchildren, Tyler Eugair, Gabe McKinlay, Kaleb McKinlay and Jayla Eugair. BRIAN WILLIAM MCNEIL
....show COLCHESTER - Brian William McNeil, 57, of Porters Point, Colchester died Feb. 6, 2010, after a courageous battle against cancer. Brian was born on Oct. 29, 1952, in Burlington, one of the eleven children of Joseph C. and Margaret A. McNeil. He attended Cathedral Grammar School, Rice Memorial High School and Vermont Technical College. He was a long time employee of the City of Burlington Electric Light Department, responsible for such obligations as the maintenance of the Moran Generating Station and the City's traffic signal system. He occasionally reminded people that he "originated" night basketball at South Park by designing and installing the light system there. He was also the proprietor of McNeil Marine and City Dock Marina, maintaining and repairing boats for hundreds of Vermont and New York residents. As a young boy and onward he simply understood electricity, plumbing and all forms of mechanical arts. He would try to explain these things to his mostly uncomprehending siblings, but typically ended up simply saying "here, hold this" or "keep the light here." Like a classic Vermonter, if he couldn't fix it the way it came, he simply rebuilt it to his liking. He was a definite sports enthusiast, being a zealous fan of the Boston Celtics and Red Sox, the University of Notre Dame and New England Patriots football teams and UVM and St. Mike's basketball. Brian was an excellent water skier, founder of the Vermont Water Ski Association and five time Vermont State champion. He was forever proud of his undefeated Cathedral Grammar School YMCA and CYO basketball team as an eighth grader, and his "back to back" Vermont Division 1 basketball championships at Rice High School. He and his fellow Rice players never gave up the bond they established. Brian also never forgot his attendance at the U.S. Team's "Miracle on Ice" Hockey victory over Russia at Lake Placid Olympics, sitting in the U.S. Vice President's seat. How he managed that was never explained beyond a shrug and his unique, trademark laugh. Brian relished the life-long friendships he developed through athletic competition. This was especially true of his contemporaries at archrival BHS, many of whom became teammates and soul mates for decades thereafter. He was totally beaming at a recent gathering held in his honor at the Clover House Restaurant. Hundreds of his friends stopped by to enjoy an afternoon and evening with him. The pictures taken of Brian with his "friends and foes" were eagerly displayed thereafter. He enjoyed his service as a medic for the Vermont Air National Guard. His medical training seemed a natural complement to his mechanical and technological skills. He managed his medical services in his own way of course, carefully donning a wig during Guard weekends to cover his otherwise noncompliant 70's hairstyles. A great memory to his family will be Brian's waking up from an apparent deep sleep during his illness to explain to his nurse in complete detail how to prepare and operate a vacuum pump for him. Brian had unlimited interest in politics. There never seemed to be a political issue in the Town of Colchester, City of Burlington or State of Vermont that he did not have an informed opinion about. His opinions were always strongly held. Grey was not a political color he could recognize. He totally enjoyed his election campaigns for and service as a Colchester Selectman. He was convinced Colchester will become Vermont's most populous community during the 21st Century and wanted its growth to be "done right." In this context, he was continuously vigilant to preserve Lake Champlain and especially Malletts Bay as a healthy body of water and recreational resource. He was recently a major supporter of continued boating access to a portion of Rosetti Beach, and was planning to promote the Town's purchase of Camp Holy Cross. Often, his political views were expressed while looking out at Champlain sunsets from his favorite perch during his tenure as "the Mayor of Breakwaters." It is hard to imagine anyone having a greater interest in the happenings on Lake Champlain than Brian. He had a photographer's eye and a reporter's inquisitive sense for the "Shipping News." No nice cruising boat seemed ever to enter Burlington Harbor or Malletts Bay without a report from Brian as to its make, model, size, condition, arrival and departure time. Brian could also recite without hesitation the ice in/ice out times and the high/low water levels for any given year. He could read the horizon and forecast lake winds, wind direction and impending storms as well as the most sophisticated meteorologist. Brian was predeceased by his father Joseph C. McNeil, his grandmother Margaret Murray, and his "Grand Cousin" Laura Mulqueen, all of whom resided in the household he grew up in. He is survived by his son William and his wife Jessica. No one could ever ask for more attentiveness and devotion than Brian received from Will and Jess during his last battle. He is also survived by Will's Mom, his exwife Mary Heinrich Aloi; his mother, Margaret A. McNeil; his sisters Mary Elizabeth, Kathleen, Margaret and Maureen; his brothers Joseph, James, Daniel, Paul, Edward and Patrick; his nieces Laura Howley (Brandon Peterson), Christy (E.K.) MacColl, Carrie (Sean) Gross, Sarah and Elissa McNeil, Carly McNeil and Margaret McNeil; his nephews Gavin Howley, Colin McNeil, Ryan Pierce, Aaron McNeil, John McNeil, Jacob McNeil and Michael McNeil; his sisters in law Doreen, Claudia, and Cheryl McNeil and Julie McKenzie; his brothers in law James Howley and Richard Mostrom and his grand nephews Quinn and Graham McNeil, Mac MacColl and Bailey Gross. Brian asked that special thanks be given to the Departments of Oncology, Cardiology and Radiology at Fletcher Allen, the most skilled and dedicated nurses and other staff members who work there, and most especially to Dr.'s Steven Ades and Robert Lobel and to nurses Jean Sheehey (radiology) and Dawn Fragola (cardiology) who worked so tirelessly and so humanely on his behalf. A funeral Mass for Brian will be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Wednesday Feb. 10, 2010, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Lake View Cemetery, Burlington. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Cancer Society 55 Day Lane, Williston VT 05495, would be appreciated. Following the funeral ceremony, all friends are invited to a reception at the Sunset Ballroom of the Comfort Suites on Shelburne Road in South Burlington.
PATRICIA (HUSE) MCVEIGH
....show MIDDLESEX - On a dismal day, Dec. 24, 2010, Patricia (Huse) McVeigh died in Central Vermont Medical Center. With deep grief, sadness, and loss, we now pass this news along to her extended family, friends, colleagues, and community. What can we say when an old soul like Tricia McVeigh passes on. We call her an old soul decidedly, not in a religious sense but in the sense of the ancients; hers was an old soul steeped with wise counsel and goodwill and good humor. She spread goodwill wherever she went, giving much and requesting little in return, but expecting good effort and sincerity. Tricia was born on May 27, 1960, in Cleveland, OH, the fifth of six children. Her parents, both Nebraskans, steadily migrated East halting their eastward migration in Massachusetts. Tricia spent much of her early childhood (often accused of being born old - Tricia called it maturity - Tricia really did have a childhood) in West Newton. At an early age, she developed a keen and abiding interest in children which she pursued throughout her educational and working life. In Brighton, Mass., she volunteered at the Parents Center devoting many hours to children in need while simultaneously meeting a man in need, Chris McVeigh. She developed and maintained lifelong relationships with individuals she first met as children at the Parents' Center. After high school, Tricia enrolled at Bowdoin College in Maine, persisting in her admission efforts by patiently, but firmly, explaining to Bowdoin why it mistakenly denied her application for early admission. She excelled at Bowdoin graduating in 1982 with a degree in psychology. After working at a home for teenage girls for a year, Tricia moved to Nebraska to start and complete her doctorate in psychology. Through some sort of magic she persuaded Chris, her newly minted husband, a man who made her laugh, that he wanted to be in Nebraska too. Eventually, Tricia moved to Middlesex, Vt. where she lived the balance of her years. And live she did. Tricia tapped a deep reservoir of energy balancing family, work, and community. Sometimes to their chagrin, not often, Tricia focused her laser attention on her children. Tricia dedicated herself to Brendan, Kieran, and Quinn, insightfully gauging the needs of each child, then working her best to provide it. She provided the tools for each to grow and develop into unique, responsible individuals. She always provided the opportunity to explore new experiences and even fail at them, then provided the listening time that parenting requires. In 1990, Tricia started a long, mutually beneficial relationship with the Barre City School District Serving in several capacities, but most importantly as a dedicated friend and colleague. Tricia valued her relationship with Barre where she practiced her expertise testing children, advising on interventional plans, and impacting the lives of many students, families, and staff members. She appreciated her environment and the depth it provided her life. Occasionally, political considerations challenged her position in Barre, but her working colleagues and administrators understood the benefit of her bargain, along with the depth and scope of her expertise, so that her position was preserved. She continued to provide dedicated service, and LaBrioche goodies, to her friends and colleagues until the last month of her life. The mutual admiration and respect between Tricia and her colleagues at the Barre Elementary and Middle School defies measure. Both treasured the other. Aside from her family and friends, Tricia's true passion blossomed in her flower garden. She transformed swaths of her Middlesex yard into a carefully staged blooming paradise of plants and flowers. She spent many hours recreating mere grassy patches into favored locations for the local honeybees and hummingbirds. She planted new varieties, traded clippings, donated plants and clippings to the annual Rumney plant sale. Tricia's work in the many summers in her garden will have long and lasting impact. In July 2005, Tricia was diagnosed with primary peritoneal cancer, treated as an ovarian cancer. While she gracefully endured several surgical procedures and rounds of chemo- therapy, her treatments lost their effectiveness. At that point Tricia consciously and confidently chose to discontinue any further invasive treatments to savor her remaining time with as much quality of life to share with her family and friends. She approached her inevitable death with the resolute directness and humor which hallmarked her life, comforting us all with her graceful aplomb. Having laid down her earthly constraints, Tricia leaves many family and friends including her children Brendan, Kieran, and Quinn; her husband Chris; her mother Mary Huse; sisters Kathyrn Huse and Susan Huse; her brothers Thomas Huse, William Huse, and Joseph Huse, and their respective spouses; and many nieces and nephews; she also leaves her mother-in-law, Yvonne McVeigh; and her many, many sisters and brothers-in-law, and their spouses and children, too numerous to name. Her friends and colleagues at the Barre City Elementary and Middle School hold a special place in her heart as she shared many years of her life with them doing good work. Tricia also touched her friends and neighbors in Middlesex who poured out their support and love for her and her family over these many years. She hopes these friends and neighbors will still harvest clippings from her garden as they desire. For the many who transported Tricia to her appointments, or wished to, our heartfelt thanks. We will have calling hours at the Barber & Lanier Funeral Home, 139 Main Street, Montpelier, on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Burial will be a private, family affair but we will schedule a memorial for Tricia in the near future. Please, in lieu of flowers, contribute to the Tricia McVeigh Memorial Fund to be established at the Barre City Elementary and Middle School, 50 Parkside Terrace, Barre, VT, 05641 care of James Taffel or Michelle Cote, co-principals.
