Leonard Allen Lucas
....show , 71, of Newport passed away January 19,2010 in Newport following a long illness. He was born June 9, 1938 in Derby a son of Kenneth and Rose (Conn) Lucas. On May 16, 1959 he married Cecile Wood who survives him. He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in 1956. Leonard was employed as a machinist at Union Butterfield's in Derby Line where he retired in 1989. He was a member of the Newport City zoning board for a number of years. He enjoyed working in his yard, displaying many outdoor Christmas lights, playing cards especially hearts, being with his family and driving and cleaning his truck. He is survived by his wife Cecile Lucas of Newport, three children: Terry Lucas and his wife Sue of Seattle, Washington, Sherry Walker and her husband Reinhard of Derby and Judy Lucas and Michael Mead of Derby, 7 grandchildren: Greg, and Rachel Lucas, Neil Walker, Amanda Leget, April, Ashley and Samantha Mead, 5 great grandchildren: Dayana and Breyniah Leget, Caden Lucas Walker, Madison and Morgan Davio, by three brothers: Albert Lucas and his wife Sylvia of Newport, Earl Lucas and his wife Jackie of Florida, and Percy Lucas and his wife Linda of Newport, and by several nieces, nephews and uncles. He was predeceased by two sisters: Pearl Favreau and Shirley Lucas. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Gertrude Mary Drown
....show , 93, died at her favorite place, Home, on February 2, 2010 with her loving family by her side. Gertrude was born in Holland, Vt on February 18, 1916 the daughter of the late Harry and Mildred (Collins) Hall. After attending Holland Graded School she came to live with her Aunt and Uncle Ken and Thelma Somerville in Newport, while she attended Newport High School. There she met the love of her life Jersey Drown. After high school graduation she enrolled in the childcare program at the New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York. Following which, she was employed on Long Island, New York. Gertrude married Warren "Jersey" Drown on December 10, 1938. Together they made their home in several communities as Jersey's work required. In 1940, they returned to Newport to live at Jersey's family homestead for the next 70 years. First and foremost Gertrude was a truly devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, Aunt, and friend. Her love of reading led her to be the assistant and later head librarian at the Goodrich Memorial Library for 13 years. Later she worked in the library at Sacred Heart Graded School. She also enjoyed oil painting as well as collecting and refinishing antique furniture. Gertrude enjoyed many happy times at Lake Salem, particularly when Gram and Gramp Jacobsen arrived from Conn, and her dear and close nieces and nephews would visit. She held memberships with the United Church of Newport, the Holland Historical Society, the Order of the Eastern Star and she was a lifetime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is survived by her two children: Charles Drown, Sr and his wife Virginia of Newport Center and Ruth Richard and her husband Mike of Newport and by the following grandchildren: Charles "Chuck" Drown, Jr and his wife Sue of Colorado, Michael Morey and his wife Shelly of Newport, Kristen Morey of Newport and Sara Richard of Burlington and one great grandchild Jenna Morey. She is also survived by her siblings Collins Hall of Irasburg, Mary Lou Wyman of Virginia, and Gilbert Hall of New York and by many loved nieces and nephews. Gertrude was predeceased by her loving husband Warren "Jersey" Drown and by siblings Joshua and Alfred Hall. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday February 5, 2010 at the United Church of Newport with the Rev. Martha Peck and Rev. Richard O'Hara officiating. He was born on June 30, 1960 in Newport a son of the late Elwin Lee Annis, Sr. Elwin was a pattern designer for Ethan-Allen MFG in Orleans for 22 years retiring in 1997 due to illness. Elwin enjoyed bowling, fishing, but most all playing with his nephews, Robert Jr., Francis, Joseph, and Thomas Annis. He is also survived by his brothers, Robert Annis Sr., of Irasburg, Brien Lemois Jr., of Irasburg, and Erik Murray and his finance Alissa Fountaine of Orleans, by his adopted Mother Nancy Lemois of Irasburg, and by his best friend Raymond Royer of Orleans. He was predeceased by his father Elwin Lee Annis, Sr., his adopted Father Brien Lemois, Sr., and by his sister-in-law Barbara Annis. William H. McCarthy
....show , 88, of Derby died peacefully February 5, 2010 in Newport. He was born September 29, 1921 in Bayonne, New Jersey a son of Jerry and Ellen (Croghan) McCarthy. On December 18, 1943 he married Dolores Kerman who predeceased him in 2008. He entered the United States Navy and served his Country during WW11. During his lifetime he was an electrician, and he moved to Derby around 20 years ago after retirement from Cranford, New Jersey. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local # 3. He held membership with St. Edward's Catholic Church in Derby Line where he was also a deacon. He loved hunting and fishing. He is survived by a daughter Ellen McCarthy of Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, and by a son Bill McCarthy and his wife Robyn of Newport, 6 grandchildren: Christopher, Elizabeth, Maggie, Catie, Taylor, and Kelsey and by one great granddaughter Grace Ellen. He is also survived by two brothers: Harry McCarthy and his wife Madeline of NJ, and Eddie McCarthy of Ct, and by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by 4 brothers. Mariette M. Hamel
....show , 92, of Webster Road, Coventry died peacefully February 6, 2010 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born March 30, 1917 in Iberville, Quebec a daughter of George and Lodia (Menard ) Menard. Her mother died of influenza when Mariette was 2 years old. Her father married Martha Dupuis and operated a farm on the Coventry river road near the junction of Coventry station road. Mariette went to the one room River road graded school and attended Orleans High School. She and her older sister Iselle drove a horse and buggy to Orleans high school. On June 30, 1936 Mariette married Gerard Hamel, a dashing neighbor farm boy from down the river road. Mariette and Gerard had 6 children while working on and operating farms on the Airport road in Coventry, and in Westchester, Conn for 4 years and finally back to the home farm on Webster road in 1945. They owned and operated the home farm for 41 years. The home farm was originally owned by Felix Hamel. The farm house has been in the family for over 97 years. Mariette had great compassion for her farm animals. She worked tirelessly, caring for her family, cooking and keeping the farm house and property clean and neat. She spent many happy hours picking wild berries, apples and butternuts on their farm. Her vegetable garden, cooking and canning was her pride and joy. As a mother, her 6 children were her life and meant the world to her. She is survived by 5 children: Lawrence and Connie Hamel of Lyndonville, VT; Gloria Menard of Craftsbury, VT; Lucille and Dean Porter of Brattleboro, VT; Brenda Hamel-Bissell of Underhill, VT; Jeanette and Terry Perkins of Coventry, VT and 10 grandchildren; 12 great grand children and 4 great-great grand children. She is survived by her step sister Ruth Perron and her husband Leo of Newport and several nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States. She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Gerard in 2003, her son, Roger in 1951, her sisters, Iselle Goddard and Pauline Gaboriault, her Brother, Laurent Menard, her parents George and Lodia Menard and her step mother Martha Pitt. A private service was held by the family. There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at ST Theresa's Cemetery Barton-Orleans road in the spring.
Reginald L. Page
....show , 92, of Holland died February 8, 2010 at his home. He was born June 26, 1917 in Holland a son of Harry and Anna (Judd) Page. On June 12, 1948 he married Evelyn Alice Smith who survives him. Mr. Page was a self-employed farmer all of his life. He served as Representative in legislature for one term and he was a life member of the Masonic Lodge in Stanstead and he was also a member of the Eastern Star of Newport and the Holland Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife Evelyn Page of Holland, and by several nieces, nephews and close friends. He was predeceased by four brothers Maurice, Ira, Russell, and Dale. A graveside service will be held at the Mead Hill Cemetery in Holland in the Spring. Hugh Stanley Pierce
....show , 83, resident of Orleans died Monday February 8, 2010 with his family at his side. Hugh was born on June 21, 1926 in Newport,Vt the son of Hubert S. and Marjorie (Patterson) Pierce. He grew up in Newport and graduated from Newport High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy and attended St. Lawrence University where he enjoyed competing on the men's ski team. In his younger years he worked for Tidewater Oil Company as a salesman and then made his career at Ethan Allen Manufacturing, Orleans Division for over 25 years. Hugh was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed golfing, fishing, and watching any and all sporting events on T.V. He was a member of the Orleans Country Club for 45 years and when he retired he enjoyed many years working in the Orleans Country Club pro shop. He was a member of the American Legion Post 23 where he shared many "happy hours" with his friends. Hugh is survived by his wife Virginia (Ginger) of 61 years; four children: Carol Boucher, Jane Horton and her husband Bob, Bev Gage and her husband Peter, and Jeffrey Pierce and his wife Sally, four granddaughters: Meghan and Emily Boucher, Jessica Gage and her husband Michael Day ,Molly Gage and fiancé AC Heyward and one step-granddaughter Bria Horton. He was predeceased by his grandson Nicholas Gage and sisters: Rosalie (Pierce) Keith, Barbara (Pierce) Searles, and Mary (Pierce) Mosher. A memorial service will be held in the Spring at the convenience of the family. ....show , 73, of Newport died February 10,2010 in Newport. He was born July 19, 1936 in Newport a son of Wells and Geneva (Wheeler) Brown. In 1977 he married Georgette Grenier who predeceased him in 1990. Sam was a milkman for Elmwood Dairy where he retired after 30 years of service. He and his late wife enjoyed going fishing and he coached Babe Ruth baseball for several years and supported his favorite baseball team the St. Louis Cardinals. Sam was also an avid deer hunter and he always enjoyed the companionship of his cats over the years. He was also a bowler and member of many different teams over the years. He was a member of the National Guard for 4 years. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in the class of 1975. Guy was employed as a machinist at the Tap & Dye in Lyndonville. Prior to being a machinist he operated and owned a family farm for twenty years. He enjoyed working on his snow machine, and ice drag racing with his racing team. He also enjoyed playing horse shoes, broom ball, and playing with his grandchildren. More recently he became technologically savy. ....show , 86, of Barton died February 10, 2010 in Newport. He was born January 17, 1924 in Biddeford,Maine a son of Francis and Courana (Dubois) Gagniere. On December 26,1955 she married Jeannette M. Vielleux who survives him. In 1945 he joined the merchant marines for 9 years. Mr. Gagniere was a veteran of WW11 where he was involved in the invasion of France in 1944 D Day. During his lifetime he was owner of a Texaco Service Station in Derby Line. He held memberships with St. Edward's Catholic Church in Derby Line, the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foregin Wars Post 798, and the American Legion Post 21. His hobbies included golfing, watching sports, especially hockey and baseball. He traveled all over the world and spent the winter months in Florida. He reveived a diploma for life experiences from North Country Union High School in 2003. He is survived by his wife Jeannette Gagniere of Deauville,Quebec a daughter Jeanne Gagniere-Hamblett of Barton, a sister Rita Conley of Asbestos, Que, and by a sister-in-law Fabiene Lessard of Newport. He was predeceased by four brothers Roger, Leo, Raoul and Rene and by a sister Bernadette Gagniere. ....show , 75, of Derby died peacefully on February 12, 2010 in Newport. He was born February 26, 1934 in Derby Line a son of Lee H. Sr and Altie (Smith) Holmes. On June 11, 1960 he married Marie Joyal who survives him. He entered the United States Air Force for twelve years where he served during the Korean War. During his lifetime he was a truck driver for the Red Ball and Admiral Moving Company in Windsor, Conn. Among his hobbies he enjoyed making jewelry and rosaries which he sent to poor countries. He took great care of his children who both had epilepsy. He is survived by his wife Maria Holmes of Newport, a daughter Diane Holmes of Barton and by a sister Joyce Carpenter of Burlington. He was predeceased by a son Mark Holmes. A graveside service will be held by a military chaplin in the Spring in Derby Center Cemetery.

On March 19, 1994 he married Claire Berard who survives him. Keith was a painter for Memphremagog Rentals in Newport. His hobbies included: hunting, fishing, bowling, and he enjoyed spending time on his computer. He loved spending time with his friends and being a mentor for the neighborhood children. He was a master electrician for Ethan Allen MFG and factories in Springfield, Vt. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Barton, the American Legion Post 23 of Orleans and he was a 49 year member of AA. His hobbies included fishing and boating. He was also employed by the City of Newport and Columbia Forests Products for several years. David was an avid fisherman and duck hunter. He loved to snowmobile, and motorcycle ride. He loved his beloved cat "Goldie" and he also loved many other animals. Silas Milo Houghton, Jr.
....show , 83, died peacefully at his home on Lake Salem in Derby on Tuesday, February 16, 2010. His beloved caregiver and dear friend, Barbara Norton held his hand as he passed. Si was born in Lyndon, VT on August 8, 1926 to Silas Milo Houghton Sr. and Mary (Davidson) Houghton. He attended the Red Village school, a one-room school house, and Lyndon Institute. After graduation he joined the Navy and served until the end of World War II. He met his first wife, Pearl M. Day of Newport, while she attended Lyndon State Teachers College. They were married on Christmas Eve, 1945. In 1948 Si and Pearl made their home on the shore of Lake Salem in Derby, a place they loved and where he requested that he spend his last days. When first married he worked for a year as both a farm hand and gas station attendant in Derby Line. Si joined Butterfields Division of Litton Industries in 1947. He began as a machine operator and retired in 1967 as Plant Manager. In the inaugural year of North Country Union High School, he taught machine shop and mechanical drawing in the Vocational Education Department. After 26 years of marriage, Pearl died in 1972. After Pearl's death he left North Country to become a full time, dorm-residing, 46-year-old student at Vermont Technical College in Randolph where he earned an Associates Degree with honors in Civil Engineering in 1975. He returned to NCUHS and rejoined the Vocational Education Department. In 1978, while teaching, he also attended the University of Vermont, graduating with a B.A. in Education. He met his second wife, Deane (Moore) Hamilton at North Country and they were married in 1979. He retired as Director of Vocational Education in 1988. After 25 years of marriage, Deane predeceased him in 2004. After Deane's death, Si said that he had been blessed to have been married to two of the most wonderful women in the world. Si was generous with his time, serving as a literacy volunteer in the prison system, a guardian ad litem, a volunteer at the United Church of Newport Food Shelf and an enthusiastic supporter of the Area Agency on Aging in Newport. He was a member of the Derby Lions Club, serving as president for several years. Si was once a hunter and became a guy who loved to walk in the woods in deer season while carrying a rife. As a younger man he enjoyed curling, water-skiing, and he was quite the ping-pong player. He loved to fish, canoe, kayak, hike and was a prodigious organic gardener. After he retired he made high quality furniture for Deane and their children. For several years he operated his own maple sugar house in Lyndon on land he inherited from his parents. He enjoyed travel, politics, playing bridge, chopping wood and driving his tractor. Si was a life long resident of Vermont, a great story teller and could tell a joke with what can only be characterized as a Vermont sensibility. He is survived by his daughters, M. Leslie Klisz and her husband Stephen of Marcellus, NY, and Carolyn Houghton and her husband David Sodano of Medford, MA; grandson Jeffrey Klisz of Marcellus, NY; sister Carolyn Johnson and her husband Ted of Ascutney; brothers Walter (Joe) and his wife Ruth, and Nathan and his wife Fran of Lyndonville; stepchildren Frank and John Hamilton, and Linda Oliver; nieces Judy Block, Vicky O'Keefe, Robin Hartsock, Alison Raymond, Carmen Houghton, and Margaret Streeter; nephews Burkett, Bruce and, Brian Houghton; Howard and Jonathan Day; many beloved great-nieces and great-nephews. Step-grandchildren Douglas, Andrew and Peter Oliver; Cory Whelihan; Scott, Reese, Ruth, Troy and Ben Hamilton; many treasured great-grandchildren, and dear friend Ingrid Christman. His niece Penelope (Day) Yakubek and nephew Silas Houghton predeceased him. A Memorial Service to celebrate Si's life will be held at the United Church of Newport on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at 2:00 PM. On November 17,1950 he married Margaet Malloy who survives him. He was a veteran of the Korean War. During his lifetime he was a machinist for Chamberlin Machine, Inc in Bellows Falls, Vt, where he retired after 20 years of service. Donald was an avid dear and turkey hunter and he also enjoyed fishing. He and Margaret enjoyed RV'ing going from Maine to Florida and many spots in between. He loved his family and friends and enjoyed their visits. Bradley A. Thomas, Jr
....show , 89, of Newport passed away in Newport on February 23, 2010. He was born on February 10,1921 in Johnson, Vt, son of Bradley, Sr and Marjorie (Post) Thomas. Brad graduated from Enosburg Falls High School in 1939 and shortly after joined the Army and served in WW11 in the 643rd Tank Destroyer Battalion as a driver. He was in the Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He married Simonne (Goulet) Whiteman on August 20, 1949 who predeceased him in 1985. He was a member of Newport Post 21 American Legion. He was the Dept Head for the former A&P Grocery Store in Newport for several years. Brad was fond of the Big Band Sound and that music could be heard at any time upon entering his home. He was an avid reader and especially liked mysteries, foreign intrigue and war stories until his failing vision forced him to discontinue that activity as well as driving and playing golf. Until his illness made it difficult he tried to walk every day and joined the members of the Herb March coffee club at Wendy's. He often said that the teasing and joke telling which took place at those gatherings were the highlight of the day. His great sense of humor largely contributed to the festive mood. Brad is survived by his children: Gary Thomas and his wife Patty of Derby, Karen Blais and Phil Sheltra of Westfield, and Brenda Giannino of San Diego, California. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Jaime (Blais) Comtois and her husband Jon of Newport, Anthony Blais of Troy, and Joanna Thomas and her friend Drew Brinckerhoff of South Burlington, and by his great grandson : Ryan Blais of Troy, by his brother James R. Thomas of Burlington, and by a special friend of 23 years Theresa Trotier . He was predeceased by a sister Helen O'Connor. ....show , 74, of Newport, Vt died peacefully February 26,2010 at the Bel-Aire Nursing Home in Newport with his loving family by his side. He was born September 7, 1935 in Irasburg,Vt a son of Maurice and Lois Magoon Barry. On June 27, 1959, he married Olive "Ollie" Marilyn Laprierre who survives him. In 1955 he joined the United States Air Force for four years during which he served in France for three of those years as Weapons Mechanic. After returning from France he started working at Ethan Allen Manufacturing Plant in Orleans,Vt, where he worked in the Cabinet and Chair Department for 43 years before retiring. He was also a Fire Fighter for over 40 years with the Newport City Fire Dept. He loved being a member of the Department and always could be found in the kitchen at the Fire Station helping prepare meals for events hosted by the Fire Dept as well as for special Awards Banquets for the Fire Fighters. He was also a member of the Newport City Ambulance crew for a number of years and the American Legion Post 23 of Orleans. He was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport as well as a past member of the Knights of Columbus. His hobbies included wood-working, fishing, cooking for his family, and having cookouts. He especially loved traveling with his wife and sister Beverly and her husband Bob on trips to Maine to visit his brother Bob and wife Dottie. He also enjoyed attending the annual Fire Convention with his brother and sister-in-laws, the late Emile and Annette Lapierre. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Olive "Ollie" Marilyn Lapierre of Newport, three sons: James and his wife Lori of Derby, William and his wife Puangpayom (Dee) of Newport, and Thomas and his fiancé Sheila Quinn of Newport, and by his daughter Suan Houghten and her husband Todd of Lowell, 20 grandchildren, and step grandchildren, and four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by one brother Robert Barry and his wife Dottie of Kittery, Maine, and by three sisters: Beverly Chapdelaine of Irasburg, Lillian "Tillie" and her husband Cliff Brown of Sneads Ferry, North Carolina and Jeanette "Tiny" Carr of West Burke. He was born August 30, 1955 in Rochester, NH a son of Fred Marsh,Sr and Wanita (Hussey) Marsh. He graduated from Farmington High School, Farmington, NH in 1973. In his teens, he received his FCC Radiotelephone with Radar License. He attended Franklin Pierce College, Portsmouth, NH in their Batchelor's program in Computer Information Systems. He received certificates from the Sylvania Technical School in Waltham, Mass, NRI Correspondence Schools, and the American Institute for computer science. He was self taught through may hours of study and reading countless volumes of books and magazines on a variety of subjects. Yearly,he attended educational seminars and evening courses pertinent to career advancement. He was employed by the following: Corning Costar Corporation in Kennebunck, Maine as an electronics and software engineer, the Vermont Creative Software in Richford, Vt as their director of development, the Goodrich Fuel and Utilities Systems Division in Vergennes, Vt as a systems software test engineer. From 2003-2007 he was the founder, president and CTO of the Island Pond Wireless. He also was director of Northern Operations for Great Auk Wireless in Brattleboro,Vt, he was a Radio Network Engineer and Technical Director for Ridgeviewtel, LLC, Longmont, Col, and he worked briefly for Fairpoint Communications and My Row International Inc. Jake was a volunteer certified ECH with the Brighton Rescue and a groomer operator for the Brighton Snowmobile Club. Among his hobbies he enjoyed fishing, camping, organic gardening, computers and programming. He is survived by his partner in life, business and best friend Holly Bonville of Island Pond, two sons: Matthew Marsh of Farmington, NH, Dylan Marsh of Saco, Maine, two grandsons: Michael and Blake of Farmington, NH, his brothers and sisters: Wanda Badger of Corning, Iowa, David Marsh of NH, Dennis Marsh of Coos Bay Oregon, Fred Marsh of Rochester, NH, and Arlene Baker of Afton, Oklahoma. She was a hard worker and loved people. She was best known for her quick wit and charming personality. She always had a cup of tea waiting for any guest who dropped by for a visit. Margaret was born on September 5, 1929 in Chambley, Quebec to Edward Clarke and Rose Blair Clarke. She married Robert E. Moore and moved to Island Pond, Vt where they raised their children. Margaret was predeceased by her husband Robert Moore and her second husband Frank McGuire. Margaret is survived by her children: Helen Ledoux and her husband David of Manchester, NH, William Moore and his wife Tamara of London, England, and Brian Moore and his wife Noni of Brownington. She is also survived by her brother Frank Clarke of Montreal and by her sisters: Edna Clarke of Alberta, Canada, Claire Furlotte and Eleanor Clarke of Montreal and by 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by two children: Gary Edward Moore and Lorrie Ann Pierce and by a great granddaughter Chelsea Gallien. He graduated from St. Mary's University in San Antonio,Texas with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Mr. Plucas was employed by Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in Middletown, CT and he was also a Police Officer with the Middletown Police Dept , Middletown, CT for several years. He retired from the State of Vermont Department of Corrections as a Correctional Officer. Edward is survived by his children: Bradley Plucas of Wilkes - Barre, Pa, Beth Reid and her husband Mark of Naples, Fl, Robin Cooley of East Haddam, CT, Brittany Plucas and Augusta Plucas both of Holland, Vt. She was born September 7, 1916 in London, England a daughter of William Cullum and Margaret (Muir) Enterkin. On December 5, 1942 she married Edward Earle Hunt who survives her. Mrs. Hunt was an accomplished pianist, organist, and painter. She was active in the West Hartford Art League and she was an author of the book, Caught In The Middle, A Portrait of Two Worlds. She and her husband moved to Derby, Vermont in 2006 to reside with their son. She is survived by her husband Edward Hunt of Derby, Vt her son Warren Hunt and his wife Helene Giroux of Derby, Vt, her daughter Deborah Hunt-Tolly and her husband James of Austin, Texas, 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Phyllis (Norris) Smith
....show , 98, died March 8, 2010 at the Bel-Aire Quality Center Nursing Home in Newport, Vt. Phyllis was born May 8, 1911 in Troy, Vt, the daughter of the late Richard B. Norris and Eliza (Ruiter) Norris. She and her husband, Raymond Smith lived on a farm in Irasburg, Vt for many years. They also lived and worked in Massachusetts for awhile. After her husband's death she lived with her sister, Crystal, at the Trailer Park in Derby, Vt. After her sister died in 2003 she moved to the Bel-Aire Nursing Home. She was predeceased by her husband Raymond Smith in 1972. She was the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by her two brothers: Evard Joseph Norris, and Kenneth M. Norris and by her six sisters: Effie Norris who died in childhood, Eva Fox, Madge Drown, Ardis Wilcox, Beth Pettengill and Crystal Rossier. She had no children but many nieces and nephews (too numerous to mention) that thought the world of her and will miss her very much. She was a super lady. She worked many years at the Library in Derby Line, Vt. She loved to read, especially mystery books and books by Vermont authors. She was a member of the United Church of Derby, Vt and belonged to the Women's group there. Special thanks to Raymond and Ardis Sykes for a great job being there for her in her last years spent at the nursing home. She enjoyed having coffee at the Barton Pharmacy with the coffee group. Virginia was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Barton. After he sold his share he worked for Montgomery Wards and Newport Cable installing cable in Barton and Orleans. He later worked for Seguin Music as their TV technician where he retired. He enjoyed traveling and liked visiting historical places and he spent many years working on the family tree. He is survived by his wife Jane Hackett of Derby, his children: Linda Gibson and her husband Thomas of Isle LaMotte,Vt, David Hackett and his wife Lise (Limoge) of Phonixville, Pa, and Mary Anne Gratton and her husband Daniel of Essex Junction, Vt. Paul was a logger for most of his life. He was a New York Yankee's number one fan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding in the country, playing weekly poker with his friends, playing cribbage, watching old westerns on the television, attending horse pulls at just about every fair in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York. He will be deeply missed by his family and longtime companion Becky Danforth and last but not least his dog Queen. He is survived by his children, Laurel Piermont and her husband Edward of Bolton, Bernice Hunt of Rutland, and by his girlfriend Becky Danforth of Brownington, grandchildren, Kimberly, Kyann, Jade, Teedra, and Ralph, and by a sister Elizabeth Graves of Newport. On January 26, 1968 he married Penny Pierce who survives him. He graduated from St. Johnsbury Trade School and entered the United States Air Force where he served his Country during peacetime. During his lifetime he was a sales clerk for J.B. Colton of Orleans, Lyndonville Hardware and Prouty and Miller. He held membership with the Memphremagog Lodge # 65 F&AM of Newport. His hobbies included kayaking, camping, bird watching and spending time with his grandchildren. Ron will be remembered for his humor and being a private person. He is survived by his wife Penny Flood of Newport, his daughters: Dawn Flood and her fiancé Ron Dunn of Holland, Heidi Gleason and her husband Randy of Holland, and Tina Hill and her husband Mike of Newport Center. He is also survived by the following grandchildren: Christine, Mike, Marc, Keagan, Steven, Randy Jr, Gabrielle, Jonathan, Alexa, Silas, and Mylah and by one great grandson Mack. He is also survived by his sister Sally Guadagni and her husband Chuck of Newport Center, his brother David Flood of St. Albans, his brothers-in-law Ken Pierce and his wife Mary Jean of Newport and David Pierce and his wife Allison of Northfield, Mass and by several nieces and nephews. At Ron's request, there will be no services. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. ....show , 77, born October 13, 1931, the daughter of Leonard Lafoe and Bernice (Dane) Bullock died November 16th (2010) at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Beloved wife of Lewis Sheltra 61 years 8 months. Survivors are husband Lewis, daughter Colleen Belanger and her husband Charles P., grandchildren - Claude Poitras and wife Donna of Maine, Sheila Kohl and companion Brian of Connecticut, Peter Belanger, Sutton, Vermont and great grandchildren - Jason Poitras, Vanessa, Rebeckah, & Travis Kohl, and Andrew Lewis Belanger. Many nieces and nephews and her pet cat Peter Boots.
Bertha was predeceased in 1998 by her daughter Patricia Elaine (Sheltra) Poitras, Twombly at the age of 50. Also her brother Vernon Bullock, and her mom and dad.
Bertha worked before her disability at the Newport Plastics Corp. She was a member of the V.F.W. in Newport for more than 35 years. She enjoyed making afghans for many years for family and friends. She enjoyed spending time with her family and had great times at the Meeting Place in Newport. Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
