Myrtle Ebert Marks
....show
left this life July 20, 2010, at the age of 96, at home in St. Johnsbury, Vt., attended by her son, Michael "Tony" Marks, and his best friend of many years, Deborah Roberts. Myrtle was born and raised in urban Chicago. She was the adored and indulged youngest of six girls and two boys born to Gustav and Bette (Schwartz) Ebert. Her charming early-childhood lisp is well remembered for bringing smiles and lightness to those around her. Early in life, she was recognized as a talented pianist. Her playing brought joy to herself and others and remained a touchstone throughout her life. The diverse resources of the Windy City greatly enriched the lives of Myrtle and her siblings, with whom she was very close. Myrtle met her husband Robert (Bob) shortly after World War II. Bob served as a tail-gunner and gunnery instructor in the Royal Canadian Air Force, having crossed the border to enlist before America joined the war effort. Myrtle also served, as a stateside volunteer, selling war bonds and supporting the soldiers' R&R as a hostess in Chicago's USO club. In marriage, Myrtle remained a "city girl," moving, as a new bride, to Detroit in its heyday as America's Motor City. Here was born the light of her life, her only child, curly-headed beautiful baby boy, Tony. As did most women of her era, Myrtle then set aside her individual aspirations to focus on and support the family. While devoted to raising Tony and keeping the books for her husband's independent business, she found time to discover and develop another talent: painting. Several of her pieces are still displayed in her home, giving pleasure to her family and visitors. In addition, she easily became a top-notch bridge player, a hobby she developed socially with her husband and continued to enjoy until the last few years of her life. There were also many years of league bowling, and a resultant trophy or two shined brightly in her home. Participation in civic organizations as well as activities and associations of her faith rounded out her life. After tenderly nursing her husband Robert through a difficult illness of several years, Myrtle was widowed in 1988. Following his passing, she moved to a retirement complex in the San Francisco Bay/Silicon Valley area of California to be near her son and Deborah. Shortly after Tony and Deborah moved to St. Johnsbury, Deborah's hometown, so did Myrtle. She became especially close friends with Deborah's widowed aunt and Myrtle's age-mate, Millie Whorrall, who had come from Florida to be near Deborah and Tony until her passing in 2003. Myrtle spent several peaceful years in a perfect corner apartment at the lovely St. Johnsbury House before returning in 2009 to the apartment in Deborah's house on Cliff Street where she had begun the Vermont chapter of her life. Myrtle was predeceased by her husband, all of his siblings, and all of her siblings, and thus was the last of "The Greatest Generation" for the two families. Myrtle is survived by her son, Michael Tony, and her just-like-a-daughter-in-law Deborah Roberts; Deborah's daughters Daca and Tara; son-in-law Jason Heath; and three grandchildren, Cassidy, Nolan and Miles, all of whom she loved as her own. Many nieces and nephews and their descendants around the country survive her and she treasured visits and correspondence with them throughout her life. Assistance given to Myrtle in the last years of her life by the administrative, professional, and para-professional staff at Area Agency on Aging and Caledonia Home Health was greatly appreciated by Myrtle, Tony and Deborah. Extra-special thanks are extended to Betty P., Peggy G., Jessica D., Gabi W., Maria R., Bonnie N. and Nancy B., whose positive and spirited personalities as well as hands-on care and comfort made all the difference. It is hoped that Rene R. and Eileen K. will always know just how very important was their participation in, and contribution to, Myrtle's last days. If we have forgotten to mention you, and you were a part of Myrtle's life, please know it was oversight on our part, and we're sure to think of it tomorrow. Thank you all. No local services are planned.

of St. Johnsbury, Vt., passed from this world into the next on Aug. 23, 2010. She was born in Pawtucket, R.I., Feb. 5, 1938, to Ernest and Anne (McClaughlin) Billion, and spent many happy years residing with her family in Pawtucket, Warwick and Providence, R.I. Esther served as a registered nurse in hospitals all over the state, working in critical care and children's oncology as well as serving as a school nurse for many years. Caring for others was a highlight of her life. In 1976, she completed her happiness by marrying her hero, George E. Everly (deceased) and adopting two children (Thaddeus J. and Judith A.) from Brazil in 1980. In 1993, she and her family moved to St. Johnsbury, living for many years at "Rainbow's End" (Sylvain Road). She threw herself into the Vermont lifestyle, tending the 11 acres as a husband-and-wife team. Although a lifelong devout Roman Catholic, it was at this time they built a little chapel and became closer than ever with her God, her faith sustaining her through some difficult times. In 2003 she moved to Coolidge Circle, where she resided until her passing. Esther is survived by her daughter Judith A. Donnelly and son-in-law Mark T. Donnelly. She was predeceased by her parents Ernest and Anne, as well as her brother Arthur (Mickey) Billion. In 2004 her son, Thaddeus J., predeceased her and, in 2009, she lost her beloved George. Being an active member of St. John the Evangelist Church in St. Johnsbury helped sustain her through these losses. She was a member of the Secular Franciscan Order (SFO) and had served on the parish council for a number of years. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and spiritual family, often going out with them and relaying stories to her daughter who was residing overseas. In May her daughter and son-in-law returned to the area to spend many happy times together with Esther before her passing. Visiting hours will be held Friday evening, Aug. 27, at Sayles Funeral Home from 6 with closing prayers at 8 p.m. There are no designated memorial contributions; Esther loved flowers and would have been pleased to have received them or a Mass in her memory. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at the St. John the Evangelist Church, located on Main Street in St. Johnsbury, this Saturday, Aug. 28, at 11 a.m. A reception will immediately follow at the Father Joseph A. Lively Center.
William "Billy" G. Parker
....show
, 64, lost his fight with cancer Wednesday, Aug. 25, with his mother, his brother and his family and friends by his side, at home, the way he wanted. By any measure, it was a remarkable fight, by a remarkable fighter. It has been a nine-year battle against an enemy which would have overwhelmed anyone else a long time ago. But Bill never gave an inch. He fought, and endured, and went on. But that's Bill. He fought to save lives all his life. What he put himself through in the past few years with experimental treatment and surgery will continue to be his legacy, saving more lives into the future. He advanced the science, using his body as the lab. He was born in Lewiston, Maine, Dec. 19, 1945, the son of John T. and Beatrice (Ricker) Parker. On Dec. 13, 1977, he married Christine Leach, who predeceased him in January 2008. He was predeceased by his father, John Parker, in May, 1996, and a nephew, John T. Parker, in September 1986. He is survived by his mother, Betty Parker of Canterbury Inn, St. Johnsbury; a daughter, Meloney Parker of Massachusetts, whom he dearly loved; and a brother, Michael Parker and wife Judy of North Danville; nieces and nephews; and a legion of friends, co-workers and neighbors. He always wanted to be a firefighter. His mom tells of him riding the fire trucks as a teenager during summers in Maine helping the department burn off farm fields. The family moved to St. Johnsbury in 1959, and he graduated in 1964 from St. Johnsbury Academy, where he was elected to student council and many other student clubs. While he was still in school, he went to work for the St. Johnsbury Fire Department. He was drafted, and served his nation in the U.S. Army, in Vietnam from 1965-67. When he was done serving his country, he came back to the fire department to continue to serve his community. He started as a call fireman, rose to assistant chief, and upon retirement in 1996 became acting chief of SJFD. He spent 30 years working for us, to keep us and our homes and businesses safe. No one counted the number of lives he saved. In 1981, when the gas plant on South Main Street caught fire and the big gas tanks were getting hot, Billy Parker climbed to the top of the tank, and turned the valves that shut the gas off. In doing so, he prevented an explosion that could have leveled half of St. Johnsbury. He was proud of the certificate of recognition and gratitude signed by the board of selectmen and the certificate of thanks from the St. Johnsbury Kiwanis Club, recognizing his heroism. And on his off days, Bill managed the paint department at Mayo's Decorating. The walls of many of the houses in St. J, inside and out, bear the colors he mixed. But 30 years of public service wasn't enough for him. He wanted to do more. The 24/7 bug was in his veins, and he started working the ambulance crew, at CALEX. Still he wanted to do more, so at age 50-plus he went back to school, and graduated with high honors as a paramedic from New Hampshire Technical Institute, as then the oldest person graduated in that field. At NHTI he was president of the Paramedic Student Organization, and a peer tutor, while he was working for both CALEX and Littleton Hospital. He received the Cheryl Kellogg award, the David Turner Award, and the Leadership team award at NHTI. He was a nationally registered paramedic, a member of the American Legion, the Kiwanis Club of St. Johnsbury, and a member of the EMS board of directors. For 10 years, he administered the Santa Fund. He was a member of Phi Kappa Theta National Honor Society. He worked for CALEX, for Lyndon Rescue, for Littleton hospital, and for Upper Valley ambulance. Again, no one counted the number of lives he saved, the suffering he eased, and the pain he relieved. He didn't count them. He just went back in - to the fire, to the wreck, to the apartment where someone was hurt and in trouble and needed the expert kindness of a stranger. And more than once, off duty, he beat both the ambulance crew and the fire department to the aid of a fallen senior. Everyone who knew him knew that if you wanted someone covering your back, the best person you could have was Billy Parker. You could count on him. He was a strong supporter of the Relay for Life, and proudly participated every year. In lieu of flowers, it was his wish contributions be made to CALEX, or to the Gene McDonough Scholarship fund. A gathering of friends and family will be held in his honor on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Sayles Funeral Home. He will be buried with military honors Monday at 11 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. His neighbor, NVRH Chaplain Lynn Burgess, will officiate. Fire department and ambulance groups are encouraged to attend, as well as others who wish.
