joined her mother, in heaven, early Saturday morning, April 3, 2010, at the age of 60 after suffering a stroke 10 days prior. She was the beloved, special daughter of Russell and Lois (Keneson) Butler. Her mother went home to the Lord Nov. 29, 2008. She is survived by her father, Russell, two brothers: Nathan Butler and wife Laura of Baltimore, Md., Pastor David Butler and wife Ruth of Shamokin, Pa.; nieces and nephews. Laurie Cleary, the manager at the Lyndon Women's Home, reflects: "There are very few people who enter our lives that leave such a lasting impression in our heart and soul. Laurie was that person. She brought happiness, understanding, humor, compassion, and unconditional love to all those who knew her. Although Laurie was non-verbal, she understood much and enjoyed life tremendously. She loved her family and friends who were so important to her. She lit up a room with her twinkling, bright blue eyes and warm smile and had a laugh that was infectious! We called these laughs 'Laurie's belly laughs' because they started way down deep, and her whole body would shake. Quite often these belly laughs were at her father's expense as we teased him from time to time." "Laurie and my journey started over 17 years ago when Laurie moved into the Lyndon Women's Home and I first began working there. My job was to teach necessary skills to the residents and enrich their lives. Well, I feel that I learned more from Laurie than what I gave her. She taught us all much over the years. Laurie's parents and their families became our extended family." "While there is a great sense of loss and sadness for those left behind, we know that Laurie is in a better place, and we will always carry loving and fond memories in our heart. God bless you, Laurie. We love you!" A memorial service will be held this Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Lyndon Bible Church located off Brown Farm Road. Pastor Joel Battaglia, and her brother, Pastor David Butler, will officiate. Memorial contributions could be directed to either: Northeast Kingdom Mental Health (which operates the Lyndon Women's Home on Riverside Court), or to Lyndon Bible Church.

William Howe "Bill, Bud, Willie" Pearl
....show
was born in St. Johnsbury Aug. 16, 1921, the son of Raymond A. and Alida Howe Pearl. His early life was spent on Cliff Street until the premature illness in 1936 of his father. This changed forever the life of the family. He attended all eight grades in Summer Street School and graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy with the Class of 1939. His first employment was with the A. H. Gleason Grocery Co. at the corner of Main and Central streets, a great place to work, with Ray P. Bailey, proprietor. Before leaving for the United States Army in 1942, he lived with wonderful friends, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Ruiter at 120 Main St. Mr. Pearl was assigned as a member of the cadre at Fort Devens in Massachusetts, going on numerous trips to deliver troops to various stations in the eastern part of the country. In 1943 he was assigned to Camp Edwards, Mass., where he was a corporal of the Guard for the East Coast Processing Center. On Jan. 8, 1944, he married his longtime sweetheart, Lucia Johnson, at South Congregational Church in St. Johnsbury. In January 1944, he went to infantry training at Camp Croft, S.C., with a large contingent from the South. At the close of training, William Pearl was sent to the to Ford Ord, Calif. He became a member of the 21st Infantry Regimental Combat Team, Col. William J. Verbeck commanding. The outfit went from Layte to Mindoro and thence to the small island of Lubang. The next landing was at the large island of Mindanao. While he was on the ship, report came that President Roosevelt had died. Cpl. Pearl, throughout the campaign, was advanced in grade three times to sergeant, to staff sergeant and to technical sergeant in charge of a platoon. Throughout the campaign the men were on foot all the time. He was very fortunate to have survived and been one of the few in his rifle company who was able to be there every day. The end of the war came while he was on Mindanao and his outfit was sent to the Japanese naval base at Kure with the men taking up occupation of Japan at Okayama. He returned to the United States on the Troop Ship Admiral Hugh Rodman. His first two years at home he worked for Mr. Simon Atwood at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. He was associated with the Ralston Purina Company until he was offered the position of caretaker in 1953 at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery upon the death of Mr. Atwood. This work interested him very much and he was able to open up several areas in the cemetery, and in 1966 open the first crematory in the state of Vermont. While at the cemetery, he took an abiding interest in the cemetery, gave talks on the cemetery and its people, and served as a trustee. He always had a great interest in the history of the area and was active in the St. Johnsbury Historical Society. He was a life-long member of North Congregational Church, joining under the leadership of the Rev. George Avery Neeld, who he greatly admired. While chairman of the church business committee, he was responsible for spearheading the installation of the sprinkler system and later was chairman of the North Congregational church tower fund drive to restore the church tower with the help of his friend, George Crosby, who was the treasurer. At the time of William Pearl's death, he was deacon emeritus of North Congregational Church. He served on the board of St. Johnsbury's zoning adjustment for a number of years. He and his family enjoyed canoeing, swimming and row-boating on Joe's Pond, where they purchased the small island in 1955. The family has enjoyed their farm in the town of Danville since 1959. William is survived by his beloved wife, Lucia, of 66 years; his two daughters, Peggy Pearl of East Ryegate, and Elizabeth Sargent and her husband Robert of Danville; his daughter-in-law Sheri Sargent Pearl; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Alice Johnson Blair of Danville; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sons, Thomas in 1982 and John in 2009, as well as a sister, Margaret Pearl Ide in 2008. A memorial service will be held at North Congregational Church on Saturday, May 1, at 3:30 p.m. Donations may be made to The St. Johnsbury History & Heritage Center, c/o Reg Wakeham, 1302 Main St., St. Johnsbury, VT 05819.

He grew up in Medford, Mass., graduating from Medford High in 1937. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, flying C-46 cargo planes over "The Hump" from Assam, India, into China along the Aluminum Trail. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of captain. He was enormously proud of being a "Hump Pilot" and enjoyed in his later years going to Hump Pilot reunions. Ed was a 71-year member of Local 4 (Boston) of International Union of Operating Engineers. He was proud of the fact that his father was, and his daughter Melinda and granddaughter Heather are, members of the same Local 4, and all have a reputation for being first-rate operating engineers. Ed was a storyteller. He would invariably start his stories with "That reminds me of a story," and he would regale his audience with tales of his years as an operating engineer, his worldwide travels, his family and his years as a pilot. He loved to garden, and he and Paula had a large market garden in Kingston where they sold vegetables and flowers from their farm stand. He continued gardening in Milton with his wife Barbara, where they had a farm stand as well. He was also a skilled first baseman, an expert tinkerer and an adventurer who took his kids on unforgettable road trips throughout New England, and later cross country. He had definite opinions about almost everything and enjoyed writing letters to the editor. He wrote a book about his early life called "Lucky Me," and he would tell you that he was lucky indeed to have met and married two wonderful women in his lifetime - his first wife Paula and his second wife Barbara. He was also lucky to have family who loved him dearly, including his second family, Barbara's children. Bob, especially, was always there when he needed a hand, and Kim was there every day to tease him. He lived fully until the end of his life, traveling with his two daughters and son-in-law to Gettysburg, Pa., just two weeks before he died. He taught his family by his example the virtues of love, fidelity, loyalty, honesty and hard work. He will be sorely missed. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 3, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Nutes Ridge Bible Chapel, Milton, N.H. A luncheon at the church will be held immediately afterward, and all are welcome. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Ed's memory to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
