EDITH ESTHER LARSEN
....show BURLINGTON, VT - Edith Esther Larsen, 88, of 31 Alfred Street, Burlington and beloved resident of the Arbors in Shelburne, died Feb. 11, 2010 in the presence of family, Arbors staff and fellow residents. Edith was born May 27, 1921 in Bern, Switzerland, the second child of Frieda Olga and Ernest Arthur Vuille. She attended school in Bern, earning an associates degree in business administration. She was an accomplished pianist and an outdoor enthusiast. Often in summer during her youth, she would accompany her father while he surveyed the topography of the Alps. After WWII, she served as secretary to the Consul at the Swiss Embassy in Munich, Germany. At a dinner, she met Lauritz Solberg Larsen, from Risoer, Norway and a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Their romance blossomed on the dance floor, and they were married Apr. 18,1947. The following year Edith gave birth to the first of seven children she and Lauritz would have during his Air Force career, rearing them in Ohio, Germany, New Mexico, Vermont, South Carolina and Sweden. She set up her household no fewer than 17 times during her life with Lauritz, each time making a home where she nurtured her family, cultivated her flower gardens and entertained friends, relatives and colleagues. Christmas was always a special time for her, delighting all with a wide variety of dozens of cookies made from old family recipes. The magical gingerbread house she would construct would captivate her young children and their friends, until they were finally allowed to take it apart, well after the holidays, piece by delectable piece. The death of her daughter, Sigrid, from leukemia in 1966, tested, but did not topple her belief in the basic goodness of life. In 1967 she and Lauritz located to Vermont where he was appointed commissioner of highways. It was here on the shore of Lake Champlain where they purchased the summer house that would draw them back to Burlington year after year. When they moved to Sweden in 1972, Edith learned a new language, assimilated yet another culture, played club tennis and took up weaving as a hobby. The rugs, wall hangings and fine table linens she created and gave as gifts, are treasured by family and friends. When Lauritz retired from Volvo in 1984, they relocated to Burlington, made many new friends and continued to travel, visiting their children and grandchildren, now living near and far. And they held court at "Shoreholm" on Appletree Point during the summer months, welcoming all with their hospitality. Mammi, as she was known by her family, loved cooking and baking, and even the simplest meal was set on a tablecloth. None left the table wanting. Following the death of Lauritz in 1993, after nearly 47 years of marriage, she picked up where they ended, and with the support of neighbors, friends and family, continued to lead a full and active life. For the next 14 years Edith made her home at Alfred Street, tending to her garden, weaving, enjoying the lake house and both visiting and hosting her extended family as well as the friends she had made throughout her life. Although she ventured far from her birthplace, her friends, even those who had just met her, were keenly aware of her deep affinity to Switzerland. Hers was a rich life, full of memorable experiences, and she leaves a legacy of generosity and kindness that all who knew her will cherish. Edith is survived by her children and their families: Karen and her husband Frank Landry of Menlo Park, Calif.; Esther of Spokane, Wash.; Lauritz (Lars) and Christine, both of Burlington; Peter and his wife Heidi of Norway; and Arthur and his wife Anna of Centennial, Colo. She also leaves six grandchildren: Esther's three sons, Will Holden, his wife Carrie and their daughters, Erika and Kayla; Kris Holden, his wife Shannon and their children, Noah and Adrienne; David Holden and his partner Kara Hamby; Peter's son Sebastian Stormbo; and Arthur and Anna's daughters Andrea and Alexandra. She also leaves Heidi's children, Susanna, Kristina and Magnus. She is survived by her brother Ernest Vuille of Montreal. In addition she leaves numerous beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and their families. The family wishes to express its gratitude to the kind and caring staffs of the Arbors at Shelburne and Starr Farm in Burlington, to her physicians and their staffs and to all of her caregivers at the VNA and Armistead. Their efforts on Edith's behalf allowed her many comforts over the last four years. An interment service of Edith's cremains and a celebration of her life will be held this coming summer.

NOAH WILLIAM LATHROP
....show WILLISTON - Noah William Lathrop, "Papa", died in peace at Fletcher Allen Health Care on April 15, 2010, after a short and fearless fight against multiple medical challenges. Noah graced this world with his presence on Oct. 18, 1925, in South Bristol, the youngest child of Clarence and Elizabeth (Doaner) Lathrop. He graduated from Bristol High School in 1942. Noah began a foundational time in his life when, on his 18th birthday, he enlisted in the Marines and became a member of the Sixth Division, serving his country in Guadalcanal and the Pacific Theater. After being discharged in 1946, he set out to find that which we all seek – his true vocation. His journey, fed by his wanting to-do-it-all, led him west to Detroit to build automobiles, and then back to Vermont and farming, trucking, and finally lumbering, as a member of a multi-generational Bristol family business. On Aug. 25, 1965, he married his true soul-mate, Katherine Valiquette, and they began their life together by building their Bristol home by hand, moving there in 1969. Six years later, a lumbering accident that nearly cost him his right arm forced him to retire. However, it also ended his search for his life's true calling. He and Kay formed a volunteer team that dedicated the next 30 years of their lives to serving others in need, specifically America's Veterans. Their service began locally at American Legion Post #19, but quickly grew to a regional mission of transporting those in need from a broad geographic region in central and northern Vermont to the VA hospital in White River Junction. Originally utilizing their own personal vehicle, they were instrumental in securing several vans for a transportation service, which continues today. They retired from this vocation 29 years and 600,000 accident-free miles later. Throughout this time, Noah served in multiple local and state leadership roles within the American Legion, the VFW, and the Marine Corps League, all leading to his being honored as the American Legion National Legionnaire of the Month in Jan. 1989. Even after his second "retirement" and move to Williston, he continued to participate in each of these organizations. He leaves behind his very proud but profoundly saddened family: his adored wife Kay; his two beloved daughters, Maureen and Tom Rees, and Deborah and Bernie Yeznach; his cherished grandchildren, Peter and Michele Rees, J.P. and Poppy Rees, Holly (Rees) and Matt Baker, T.J. and Charlene Jeznach, Jesse and Jill Jeznac; and many treasured great-grandchildren. Survivors also include his sister-in-law, Ruth Lathrop; and several nieces and nephews. He also is survived by William, Robert, Roger, Richard, and Kimm and their families, his children from his earlier years of searching and whom he always loved. A celebration of Noah's life will begin with a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. on April 19, 2010, at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home on South Street in Bristol. It will continue with a service of celebration to be held at the same location at 1 p.m. on April 20, 2010, and conclude with his burial at the Fort Ethan Allen Cemetery in Colchester (Route 15) immediately after the service. Noah would want all to know of the wonderful care he received from the entire Critical Care team on McClure 4. They couldn't have been kinder, more professional, or more supportive during his entire fight. If friends desire, gifts in his memory may be made to runtohomebase.org, (or Red Sox Foundation, 4 Yawkey Way, Boston, MA 02115) a cause merging two of his greatest joys; service to America's Veterans in need, and baseball, especially Red Sox baseball.

DOLORES MORIN LEFF
....show FAIRHOPE, Ala. / SOUTH HERO - Dolores Morin Leff, a resident of Fairhope, Ala. and formerly of South Hero, died at home Sept. 4, 2010 of liver cancer, just weeks shy of her 60th wedding anniversary. She was 84. Dee, as she was known by many, was born to the late Arthur and Esther Morin in Chicago, and with her younger brother, Donald, raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. She graduated from Hunter College, majoring in music ("for my own pleasure," she explained), Phi Beta Kappa, an accomplishment she rarely acknowledged. In January 1950, she met Jonathan Leff on a blind date arranged by a friend, and in November they were married. In 1955, Claudia arrived, followed by Michael in 1957. While she lacked a formal engineering education, Dee was an accomplished engineering designer, having begun her training "on the job" during World War II. Over the years, she had narrowed her field of expertise to fire protection - sprinkler systems, standpipes, and so forth. Working out of their home, Dee established her own business, DML Design Service, specializing in sprinkler-system design, for new and existing structures, and bringing her skills to fire protection companies, contractors, and architects. She was never without a client. In 1969, the Leffs built a summer home, which Dee had designed, at Allen Point in South Hero. In 1984, Jon and Dee, and DML Design Service, moved full-time to Vermont, which became home for almost 20 years. For seven of those years, Dee was a member of the South Hero Zoning Board of Adjustment, and contributed to the discipline and consistency of that fine volunteer-citizens body. She was also an occasional volunteer at Granny's Attic. By 1995, however, the winters had become a bit much. So, inspired by Allen Point neighbors who had taken up wintertime RVing, Dee and Jon bought a 23foot "fifth wheel" trailer and a Dodge Dakota pickup, and in January 1996 headed west on the first of four sixmonth cross-country adventures. It was during the last of these road trips that they discovered the remarkable little city of Fairhope, and the Fairhope Unitarian Fellowship, on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. After renting there for four winters, they sold their Vermont home and moved down in 2003. Dee's lifelong passion for music blossomed in Fairhope. She chaired the Fellowship music committee, sang alto in the choir, and, fulfilling a longfelt desire, sang in an Eastern Shore Choral Society concert. She was a mainstay of Jam'N'Folks, a local folk music group, where she played dulcimer as well as harmonica (learned during those long hours on the open road). Throughout those Fairhope years, Dee and Jon would migrate north each summer for extended visits with friends and family, in Vermont, New York, and Pennsylvania, savoring, among other things, their ever-deepening connections to their grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Jonathan; and children, Claudia and Michael; Dee is survived by daughter-in-law, Leslie; and grandsons, Alex and Koby in Pennsylvania, Michael's oldest son, Jonathan in Vermont; Dee's brother, Donald in Oregon; and many other close relatives across the U.S. and in the Czech Republic. She leaves many dear friends whose lives she touched deeply as well. During her final days, with Mercy Medical Hospice at home, Dee recognized how fortunate she was to be the recipient of such superb care, supported by health insurance - Medicare, in her case. And she expressed the strong desire that quality health care be extended to all. The family suggests any memorial donations be made to the Fairhope Unitarian Fellowship, or to Mercy Medical Hospice in Daphne, Alabama. A Musical Memorial Gathering for Dee Leff is planned for 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010 at the Fairhope Unitarian Fellowship, 1150 Fairhope Avenue.
