Elwood W. (Hempy) Hempstead
....show , 92, a longtime resident of Williston, died Aug. 16, 2010. He was born in Green Port, Long Island, N.Y. on Sept. 12, 1917. After graduating from high school he joined the Marine Corp. in 1937, where he had the privilege of serving in China (known as the China Marines) and as the orderly for then Commander Halsey. During WWII, he was recalled prior to Pearl Harbor. He was called back into service and was in the invasion force of Guadalcanal. He was only one of seven survivors of his company and was awarded the Purple Heart. After the War, he met and married Virginia R. Mongeon of Winooski, and they married June 19, 1944. He then attended and graduated from the University of Vermont. He was a social worker for the State of Vermont, retiring in 1979. During his employment for the State of Vermont he was involved in the Meals on Wheels Program for Chittenden County. Hempy was an avid golfer to the end. He was one of the original members of the Williston Country Club and was one of the few to have shot multiple holes in one in his career. In his mid-to-late eighties, he was still walking eighteen holes of golf every day during the summer. He was an environmentalist before the term was coined, developing his property and creating a haven for wildlife in the heart of Williston. Hempy is survived by his wife, Virginia, having just celebrated 66 years of marriage; their seven children, Douglas of Lawrence, Mass., Thomas of Milton, Marian Hempstead of No. Kingstown, R.I., Joan Fitch of East Montpelier, David of Williamsburg, Va., Paula Morin of Winooski, and Roberta Shilling of Churchville, Md.; and 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A special thanks to the VNA Hospice Program, and especially to Our Lady Of Providence Residence in Winooski; to all the staff who made his last hours so comfortable and all of the loving prayers of the Sisters. Visiting hours will be on Friday, Aug. 20, 2010 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the LaVigne Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 132 Main St. in Winooski. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Williston. Interment will follow at East Cemetery with military honors accorded Mr. Hempstead. Shayne Lee Higgins
....show , 49, died on Aug. 1, 2010 from complication of MS. He was born on April 27, 1961 in Laconia, N.H., the son of Clifton and Marjorie (Bean) Higgins. He moved to Burlington in 1979, where he wrote lyrical poetry and labored occasionally as a "ceramic hydrotechnician," until his illness overtook his life. He is survived by his mother and close friends, Vince Mulac and Beth Barndt. The family wishes to thank Susan Alexander and all the compassionate friends and staff at Starr Farm Nursing Center for enhancing the quality of Shayne's life these past years. She was born in Langdon, N.H. on Aug. 11, 1928, the daughter of Leroy and Cherry (Greene) Wheeler. She leaves her children and their spouses, Beatrice and Lawrence Ducharme of Jericho, Edith Martin of Burlington, Leroy and Peggy Hill of Richmond, and Andrew Hill of Burlington; her beloved grand, great-grand, and great-great-grand children; her brother and wife, Robert and Linda Kinney of Keene, N.H.; her sister-inlaw, Daryl Wheeler; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her daughter, Elizabeth Hill; two brothers, George Greene and Kenneth Wheeler; and her dear friend, Fred Valiquette. Memorial services will be held this evening at 7 p.m. in Elmwood-Meunier Funeral Chapel, 97 Elmwood Ave., Burlington, where friends may gather from 6 p.m. until the services. ....show , 98, a lifelong resident of the St. Albans area, passed away on Wednesday evening, Sept. 8, 2010, in the Springtree Health & Rehab Center in Roanoke, Va. She was born in St. Albans, April 1, 1912, the daughter of the late Clayton Warren McGowan and Mary Victoria (Naylor) McGowan. She was the widow of Luther H. Hilliker, who died July 25, 2009. They were married Aug. 19, 1935, and celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary Aug. 19, 2008. Laura was educated in St. Albans schools and graduated from St. Albans High School. She worked for F. W. Woolworth in St. Albans for many years and was an Avon Representative where she received several presidential awards and was a member of the President's Club. She was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and belonged to the Phi Alpha Class of the church. She was also active in other civic activities, including The Kings Daughters Home in St. Albans and volunteering at Verdelle Village, Redstone Villa and Holiday House Nursing Homes. Laura and Luther lived in Swanton for several years before moving to South Main Street. They moved to Thaxton, Va. in 2005 to live with their son, Brian and his wife, Patricia. While living in Virginia, Laura enjoyed traveling, day trips with the family, and family gatherings. She loved to go to her great-grandchildren's ball games and school events. Laura had a very special love for her great-grandchildren. All of her great grandchildren were close to her and will cherish the memories of her love and the opportunity they had to help care for her. Laura's survivors include her sons and their wives, Allen and Samera Hilliker of Grand Isle and Brian and Patricia Hilliker of Thaxton, Va.; three grandchildren, Tammy Hilliker of Thaxton, Va., Karen Hilliker of Salem, Va., and Kimberly French and husband, Bryan, of Blue Ridge, Va.; and four great-grandchildren, Zachary, Meghan, Kyle and Courtney. She also leaves a sister, Enid Blatchley of St. Albans. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, as well as three brothers, Warren, Harold and Alton McGowan; and a sister, Gladys Barker. Laura will be remembered for her sweet smile, her loving ways and gentle spirit. She touched the hearts of all who knew her and will be missed greatly. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Church Street in St. Albans. Laura's family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be in the Hilliker family lot in St. Albans Bay Cemetery. ....show MIDDLEBURY - Myrna Gato Holdman, age 59, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010 at her home following a 10 year battle with lung cancer. Myrna was born in Palawan, Philippines on Jan. 22, 1951. She was the daughter of Raynario and Salvacion (Francia) Gato. She had taught Chemistry in the Philippines, where she met and married her former husband, Stephen Holdman. She came to San Diego, Calif. with her family in 1973 and on to Vermont in 1975. She was a graduate of Champlain College and received her bachelor's degree in accounting from St. Michael's College in Winooski. She had worked for over 15 years at Helen Porter Health & Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury. She also provided income tax services to many clients. She was an energetic, loving, kind and giving person, who enjoyed visiting and shopping with family and friends. Her granddaughters were her passion. Surviving is two daughters, Jane Holdman of Atlanta, Ga. and Valeria Doria and her husband, Sutton, of Middlebury; her granddaughters, Hana and Quinn Doria; and mother, Salvacion Gato; and her partner-in-life, Michael Moyer; and his children, Betsy, Michel and Michael Moyer Jr.; and his grand- children, Kinsey, Amaya, Ella and Thomik; her siblings, Mercedes, Emanuel, Anselmo, Milagros, Benito, Cenon and Virginia; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive her. ....show MIDDLEBURY - Stephen Joseph Holdman, age 58, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010 at his home in Middlebury. Steve was born in Worcester, Mass. on Dec. 28, 1951. He was the son of William and Jean (Ellis) Holdman Jr. He was a graduate of Middlebury Union High School, class of 1969. He afterwards attended V.T.C. in Randolph. He joined the United States Navy in 1971 and served aboard the U.S.S. Hancock in the Pacific. Following his honorable discharge in 1975, he returned home to Middlebury and worked in the family business, William P. Holdman Dairy Transport. He later worked at Standard Register for several years, but returned to his passion of driving trucks. He had driven for several various area construction firms both here and in Maryland. He was a former resident of Spencer, Mass. and Bifield, Mass. He belonged to The American Legion and the Middlebury Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are his daughters, Jane K. Holdman of Atlanta, Ga., and Valerie Doria and her husband, Sutton, of Middlebury; his grand-daughters, Hana and Quinn Doria; his mother, Jean Bateson of Santa Ana, Costa Rica; his father, William P. Holdman Jr. and his wife, Marguerite, of Middlebury; four sisters, Jane Smith of Middlebury, Sally Holdman Bellavance of Hardwick, Joan Breen of New Haven, and Susanne Holdman of Middlebury; his companion, Karla Shaw Brown of Odenton, Md.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. ....show BURLINGTON - Halyna Homziak (nee Slusarczuk), 91, died Sunday, July 25 in Fletcher Allen Health Care. Born in 1918 in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, her family was caught up in the Russian Civil War, 19171922. She survived Soviet collectivization and Great Famine of 1932-1933, and the forced relocation of her family to Russian Central Asia. Throughout, she continued her education, earning a degree in mathematics and a masters in education in 1940. She experienced firsthand the brutality of Second World War, from the Nazi invasion of Ukraine in 1941, the repression and partisan warfare for Ukrainian independence, to arrest and transport to a forced labor camp in Nazi Austria. She escaped the camps in the waning days of the war and joined the refugee tide fleeing the advancing Soviets, where she met and later married fellow fighter and refugee, Jakiw Homziak. They were interned in a displaced persons (DP) camp in occupied Germany, where daughter, Irena, was born in 1946. In 1948, she joined her husband in the Belgian coal fields, where he had found work as a miner, and where son, Jurij, was born. The family immigrated as refugees to the United States, arriving in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1951 with three canvas suitcases. She was the first to learn English, her 5th language, and went to work in the clothing industry sweatshops of the 1950's. She was active in the Ukrainian immigrant community and in her parish, and built a successful life in America. She became a naturalized citizen in 1964, and retired as a senior laboratory technician from Thomas Jefferson Medical College. She moved to the Converse Home in Burlington in 2006, where she quickly made it her new home. Services were held on July 30 at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Philadelphia, Pa., her home parish of more than 50 years. She will be missed by daughter, Irena Holland of Atlanta, Ga.; son, Jurij and daughter-in-law, Mary Trexler; grandchildren, Nicholas, Allie and Maya, all of Burlington; and her extended family, friends and neighbors.

....show PHILADELPHIA, PA. - Longtime Philadelphia resident, John "Jackie" Hopkins, III, a devoted homemaker and parent, avid reader and movie buff, died on June 5, 2010, at the age of 42. Jack was a friendly man who loved his dogs, cats, children, family and most of all, his life partner, Norman LeBoon. Jackie and Norman were joined together in civil union in Vermont in Oct. 2000, and Jackie considered this one of the proudest moments of his life. He passed away peacefully, at home, and is now at peace with God. He is survived by his life partner, Norman LeBoon of Philadelphia, Pa.; two children, a wonderful son, Norman LeBoon, Jr.. and a beautiful daughter, Michaela Cole of Bangor, ME; his mother, Pat Rosenfelt of Parrish, Fla.; his stepfather, John Rosenfelt of Parrish, Fla.; and the most adorable lady in the world, his grandmother, Elizabeth "Little Mommom Love" of Philadelphia, Pa. ....show BRANDON - George Edward Hornbeck, age 71, died peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010 at his home in Brandon surrounded by his family. Mr. Hornbeck was born in Goshen on Feb. 26, 1939. He was the son of George and Myrtle (Hayes) Hornbeck. He received his education in Brandon Schools and was graduated from Vermont Technical College, Class of 1958. In 1964, he received his Master's Plumber License, and he owned and operated Hornbeck's Plumbing and Heating for over 45 years. He loved his work and through it he met many of his lifelong friends. George had a real zest for life. He was well known by all for his sense of humor, practical jokes and trickery. George enjoyed hunting, fishing, four wheeling, and camping. A highlight of his life was moose hunting with his grandson in the Northeast Kingdom in 2007. He was a very talented woodworker, creating many cherished family pieces. He was the happiest when he was at gatherings with all his family around him. He and his wife, Patty, just celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary together with their family. Surviving is his wife, Patricia, of Brandon, whom he married in Brandon on July 22, 1961; two daughters, Valerie Chickanosky and her husband, John, of South Burlington and Tricia Keith and her partner, Greg Birajiclian, of Rutland; three grandchildren, Sarah, Matthew, and Annie Chickanosky; and three sisters, Jean Conant of Montpelier, Nancy Hornbeck of Waitsfield, and Barbara Schoolcraft of Bridport. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive him. He was predeceased by a brother, Roger Hornbeck, in 1964. ....show BRANDON - Patricia Ann Hornbeck, 65, died peacefully Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, at her home in Brandon surrounded by her daughters and her sisters. She was born in Rutland on Nov. 6, 1944, the daughter of Edward J. Wynne and Vivian (Hall) Wynne. When Patricia was young, Vivian remarried Stanley Buzzell, and together they raised the family. She received her education in Brandon schools. She married George E. Hornbeck on July 22, 1961, and they had two daughters, Valerie and Tricia. Patricia was very much loved and respected by her family, friends and coworkers. She had an enthusiasm for life and especially took pleasure in spending time with her husband and family. She was a compassionate friend, and shared her love and wisdom with those around her. One of her greatest joys was preparing beautiful holiday celebrations in her home. Patty loved nature, and together with her husband she spent many happy times camping and hiking around Vermont and kayaking on the Maine coast. Each year Patty and George looked forward to their annual summer camping trip with their three grandchildren. Patricia retired from Middlebury College in Nov. 2009 after 25 years. She loved working at Middlebury, and through it made many friends. She made significant contributions to the library's advancement into the computer age. In her position as media services development coordinator, she was instrumental in the development of the online Robert Frost Special Collection at Bread Loaf, and also the organization of the fledgling digital lecture archive that allowed students, for the first time, easy access to important lectures from around the world. Patricia was predeceased by her husband, George, who died on Aug. 3, 2010. On July 22, 2010, they joyfully celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary together with their family. Surviving are her two daughters, Valerie Chickanosky and her husband, John, of South Burlington and Tricia Keith and her partner, Greg Birajiclian, of Rutland; three grandchildren, Sarah, Matthew and Annie Chickanosky; and two sisters, Sandra Brutkoski of Brandon and Joan Fish of Port Huron, Mich. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the Brandon Congregational Church. The Rev. Richard White will officiate. Following the ceremony the family will receive friends at the Congregational Church Hall for a time of fellowship and remembrance. ....show MORRISVILLE, VT - Harold E. Houghton, 76, a long time resident of Morrisville, died Monday, January 11, 2010, at Birchwood Terrace in Burlington. He was born in Stowe, May 17, 1933, the son of the late Ralph and Ortha (Hood) Houghton. Harold served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a barber and for some time and was a school bus manager. He enjoyed playing pool, cards, horseshoes, being around people and was an avid Notre Dame football fan. He had served as a Past Commander and was a life member of the VFW Post #9653 in Morrisville. He leaves his wife, Marion (Lanphear) Houghton of Morrisville; two daughters, Shelley D. Merriam and husband, William, of Morrisville, and Karen K. Stephens and husband, John, of Ten Mile, Tenn.; a brother, Raymond Houghton of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Shirley Day of Morrisville; three grandchildren, David E. McAllister and wife Kristi; Jennifer L. ....show DERBY - Silas Milo Houghton, Jr., 83, died peacefully at his home on Lake Salem in Derby on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010. Si was born in Lyndon, Vt. on Aug. 8, 1926 to Silas Milo Houghton Sr. and Mary (Davidson) Houghton. He joined the Navy and served until the end of World War II. He and his first wife, Pearl M. Day of Newport were married on Christmas Eve, 1945. After 26 years of marriage, Pearl died in 1972. He met his second wife, Deane (Moore) Hamilton at North Country and they were married in 1979. After Deane's death, Si said that he had been blessed to have been married to two of the most wonderful women in the world. He is survived by his daughters, M. Leslie Klisz and her husband Stephen of Marcellus, N.Y., and Carolyn Houghton and her husband David Sodano of Medford, Mass.; grandson Jeffrey Klisz of Marcellus, N.Y.; sister Carolyn Johnson and her husband Ted of Ascutney; brothers Walter (Joe) and his wife Ruth, and Nathan and his wife Fran of Lyndonville. ....show WINOOSKI - Carol W. Houle, 79, of Winooski died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, in Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington after a short illness. She was born in Burlington on May 21, 1930, the daughter of the late Max and Florence (Chloe) Wolcott. Carol graduated from Burlington High School the class of 1948. She was later married on Oct. 1, 1958, to Louis Houle. He later predeceased her on Feb. 4, 1989. She worked for many years in retail at department stores on Church Street in Burlington. Carol is survived by her daughter, Amy Houle of South Burlington; her three grandchildren, Mark Houle, Mike and Max Bordeau; five brothers and sisters, Eben Wolcott of Colchester; Sylvia Brett of Plainfield, David Wolcott of Colchester, Elwin Wolcott and his wife Pricilla of California, Lida Kenyon of Winooski; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Sandra and Leslie. There will be no funeral services. Interment will be at a later date at the convenience of the family.

....show BURLINGTON, Vt. - Harriet A. Houle, 86, of Burlington died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, Apr. 7, 2010 following a long illness. Harriet was born in Burlington on June 20, 1923, the daughter of Alfred and Ada (Tilley) Duval. She was a graduate of Burlington High School. For over 20 years, she was employed at the Lincoln Inn and later she volunteered at the Chittenden County Correctional Center. Harriet is survived by two daughters, Susan Devino, and Stephanie Houle; one son, Allan Houle; 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; four great-greatgrandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was predeceased by her husband, Eugene J. Houle, Jr. in 1995; a daughter, Sandra Ladd; a son, Alfred Houle; and two grandsons, Edward Allan Houle and Charles Ladd, Jr. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Apr. 10, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Burlington. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours.

....show TULSA, Okla. - John William Howard, retired General Attorney, Standard Oil Company (Indiana), died Aug. 19, 2010 in Tulsa, Okla. He was 94. A native Vermonter, Howard joined Standard's Exploration and Production subsidiary in Tulsa, Okla. in 1952, becoming its General Attorney in 1970. He served on Amoco Production's Board of Directors and its Management Committee. In 1973, he transferred to Standard Oil, the parent company in Chicago, as General Attorney, retiring in 1981. Howard attended Bellows Falls High School, where he served as Class President, graduating in 1933. Howard graduated with a B.A. in political science and economics from the University of Vermont in 1949, where he was also elected to Phi Betta Kappa. He was on the varsity debating team and a member of Tau Kappa Alpha. He was awarded the Kidder Medal by the University and the Converse Prize in Economics. In 1952, he received his Juris Doctorate degree from Yale Law School, New Haven, Conn., where he was a finalist in the Moot Court competition. He was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Thomas Swan Barristers' Union, which provided trial training for the law students. He was a member of Phi Delta Phi Fraternity Corbey Court. In 1952, Howard was named among the top ten "Outstanding American College Student Leaders." He completed the Advanced Management Program Graduate School of Business, University of Virginia in 1969. Howard was a member of the Connecticut, Oklahoma, and Illinois Bars; the United States District Court, Northern District of Oklahoma; United States Court of Appeals, Tenth Circuit; United States Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. An early career in journalism, as a reporter for the Brattleboro Daily Reformer, Vermont, was interrupted in 1942 by WWII. Howard's basic training was at Fort Monmouth, N.J. He subsequently taught cryptography at the Signal Corp's school at Camp Kohler, Calif. Howard was sent back to Fort Monmouth to attend Officers Candidate School, where he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Returning to Camp Kohler, he was assigned to a theater headquarters communication team, subsequently serving as a Communications Officer at General Douglas Mac Arthur's Theater Headquarters in Holandia, New Guinea and later at Manilla in the Philippines. Howard was honorably discharged from the Army in 1946 with the rank of First Lieutenant. An adventurer, Howard traveled to all seven continents, visiting more than 100 countries, thus entitling him to membership in the Travelers Century Club. He made three trips into the Arctic, including an east-west journey through the Northwest Passage on the "Frontier Spirit." In the 86 years since the famed explorer, Roald Ambundsen first discovered the Northwest Passage, this was only the 54th ship to make it through the Passage. Howard's travels also included two ventures to Antarctica, the second one following in the footsteps of explorer, Sir Thomas Shackelton, whose ship was crushed by the ice and sank. Shackelton's rescue of his entire crew is legendary in the annals of Antarctica survival. In addition to his love of worldwide traveling, Howard was an avid skier and sailor. Certified as a Professional Ski Instructor in 1942, he was the founder and Director of the University of Vermont's Ski School in 1946 and coach of the University's women's ski team in 1948/1949. In the past 45 years, Howard has chartered boats for sails on the West coast from Alaska to the Seattle area, San Juan, the Canadian Gulf islands and Tahiti. On the East Coast, he has chartered boats to sail from Maine to the Chesapeake Bay, to the Bahamas, and to the windward and leeward islands from the British Virgin Islands south to Grenada. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward J. and Ellen M. (O'Keefe) Howard; his brothers, Edward, Daniel, Lawrence and James; his sister, Marie O'Brien; his wife, Vona (Nichols) Howard, from whom he was divorced; and his two sons, Douglas and John Howard Jr. He is survived by his sister, Katherine Howard of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Saturday Aug. 28, 2010 from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the Fenton and Hennessey Funeral Home, 55 Westminster Street, Bellows Falls, Vt. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at Saint Charles Church followed by burial at Saint Charles Cemetery, Westminster, Vt. ....show MILTON - Peter Whitworth Howe of Milton, formerly of Kulpsville, Pa., died on Aug. 13, 2010 of a heart attack while struggling against a rip current in Kill Devil Hills, N.C. He was born on Nov. 24, 1972 in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of Mary Martha Whitworth and Leland Wright Howe. Peter spent his earliest years growing up in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia and then moved to Ramstein, Germany for a few years, where he traveled extensively throughout Europe with his family. He returned to the US with his family when he was ten and lived in the Lansdale area of Pennsylvania. Peter attended North Penn High School where he served as his Sophomore Class President as well as in many other leadership positions. He attended and presented at leadership conferences throughout the state. He excelled in soccer and played on an MSA traveling team for five years, including a soccer tour of England. He played on both the junior varsity and varsity teams in high school, where he received the award for the most goals scored in his senior year. After high school, he attended the University of New Hampshire where he majored in English. During his time at UNH, he was a leader at the Freshman Orientation Camp for three years. He spent a semester studying abroad in Salzburg, Austria where he enjoyed skiing and hiking in the Alps. The following summer he backpacked and camped throughout Europe. He loved to travel and he made friends so easily everywhere he went. After college, Peter moved to Vermont and spent many years educating and caring for children. He worked in Maine as a camp counselor and at Sugarbush and Smuggler's Notch as a children's ski instructor and camp counselor. He was also an educator for the Burlington YMCA Live Y'ers After School Program and the North Penn After School Program in Pennsylvania. He absolutely loved children and they all adored Pete. Pete was an avid outdoorsman and he loved to hike the trails of Vermont with his beloved Golden Retriever, Bode. He also loved to go on canoe exploration trips and camp with his family and friends. Pete learned to ski as a very young boy in Austria and this became one of his lifelong passions. In addition to skiing and snowboarding in Vermont, he traveled to the western US ski areas and to ski resorts in Europe where he would challenge his expert mogul skills. Peter was a peaceful, kind, caring man who had a real passion for life and lived it to the fullest. He loved everyone, made friends wherever he went, and constantly found himself surrounded by new friends in rooms full of strangers. He was an adoring uncle who never missed his nephews' birthday parties and sports games. Peter leaves behind his mother, Mary Martha Whitworth of Milton and Kulpsville, Pa.; his father, Leland W. Howe and stepmother, Sandy Eyre, of Grand Ledge, Mich.; his sister, Liesl Moland and her husband, Magne, of Milton; his brothers, Toryn Howe and his wife, Dana, of Austin, TX and Marc Marian Weigert-Howe of Germany; his nephews, Magne Zadok, and Soren Moland; his niece, Ana Howe; and his grandmother, Lillian Patterson of East Lansing, Mich; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service for Peter will be held on Saturday, Aug. 28 at 10 a.m. at the Joseph Ambler Inn in North Wales, Pa. ....show PEABODY, MA - Tommy Howe, 24, of Peabody, Mass. and formerly of Colchester, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 in Scottsdale, Ariz. after a three year courageous battle with cancer. Born in West Islip, N.Y., he was the loving son of Donald and Ann (Seria) Howe of Peabody. He was raised and educated in Colchester and was a graduate of Colchester High School, Class of 2004. While at Colchester High School, Tommy set an all time scoring record in basketball that still remains today. In his junior year, he led his team to the state championship. After high school, Tommy attended UMass/Boston and played basketball in his freshman and sophomore years and won a Division III title. During his junior year, Tommy was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer. After receiving numerous treatments and sacrificing his leg, he felt inspired to change his career path and become a registered nurse. He enrolled at Lawrence Memorial School of Nursing in Medford and worked as a nursing assistant at both Lawrence Memorial Hospital and Beverly Hospital. Tommy was a role model for many students in both high school and college. He had a way of maintaining a positive outlook with humor through the most difficult times. He affected so many people with his compassion and love for life. He loved working with special needs children and was a perfect role model for his younger cousins. Family was all that mattered to Tommy; as long as his family was together, he was the happiest. It is that loving and supportive family that he is survived by, including his parents, Donald and Ann (Seria) Howe; his three sisters, Christy and Katie Howe, both of Peabody, Mass., and Kelly Rydstrom of Oakdale, N.Y.; and his brother, Donald Howe of West Sayville, N.Y. He is also survived by his fiancé, Kaitlyn Steller of Peabody, Mass., whom he proposed to last year on the Regis and Kelly show. Tommy is also survived by his grandparents as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. His funeral will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, Mass., followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. at St. Adelaide's Church, Peabody, Mass., to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. ....show SHELBURNE - Kay Hubbard, of Shelburne, died Thursday, July 8, 2010 surrounded by her family in Fletcher Allen Health Care. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the daughter of Joseph and Agnes (Bell) Guy. In 1945, Kay married Llewellyn Hubbard in Scotland. Mr. Hubbard predeceased her in 1994. For 26 years, she was a college advisor, assistant to the headmaster at The Roxbury Latin School in Massachusetts, and a mentor and friend to all. Kay was a tour guide at the Shelburne Farms and had volunteered for many years at Fletcher Allen Health Care. She enjoyed her flower gardens, traveling, especially back to Scotland, spending time with her grandchildren and entertaining her family and friends. Kay is survived by her two daughters, Deborah H. Minkler and her husband, Lee, and their children, Sarah and Marissa, all of Charlotte, and Judith Bowen and her children, Gardiner and Coleman, all of Dartmouth, Mass.; one sister, Ann Cameron Mowat of Prestwick, Scotland; and many nieces and nephews. ....show FRANCONIA, N.H. - Raymond Earl Hunt, 87, of Franconia, N.H. died peacefully July 8, 2010 in his sleep after a short bout with cancer. Ray was born Nov. 3, 1922 in Franconia, N.H. to Mr. and Mrs. George Hunt. Ray attended Dow Academy in Franconia. He was a golf caddy there and also worked at the Tramway on Cannon Mountain. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a radio operator for the US Army Air Corps, stationed in the Aleutian Islands. He married Virginia Rogers in 1950 and moved to a farm in Jeffersonville. He and Ginny farmed there for 12 years, winning the county "Greener Pastures" award in 1957. In 1963, the family moved to a farm in Hinesburg to be closer to Burlington. Ray started working at General Electric in 1966 and retired from GE in 1983, moving back to the family farm in Franconia, N.H. where he lived his remaining life. He enjoyed his 25 years of retirement reading westerns, attending equipment auctions, having yard sales and visiting with family. He is survived by two sons, Timothy and Benjamin; a daughter, Deborah, and her husband, Phillip Gianelli; as well as by Tim's two daughters, Abbie and Jessie Hunt. Ray enjoyed attending a large family reunion and cookout this Fourth of July at his family home where he was able to see his remaining brothers and sister as well as sons and daughter, her husband, granddaughters, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. ....show BURLINGTON - Virginia Marie Shoffner Hunter, 91, died peacefully March 21 2010 at The Respite Home, Williston. Virginia was the beloved wife of 54 years of R. Everett "Skip" Hunter who predeceased her in 1996. Virginia spent her long career as a school librarian in Bergenfield, N.J., where her husband was a school administrator and coach. She earned her degrees from Ursinus College (PA) and Teachers College, Columbia University. Upon moving with her husband to Vermont in 1992, Virginia volunteered at the South Burlington Library. Her love of education is reflected in the educational accomplishments of her three daughters and the families they nourish: Eldest daughter Marcia Hunter, MD. of North Carolina (and her daughter Jennifer Susse Shapiro, Ph.D. and her husband, Jonathan Shapiro, Ph.D. and their children Tessa and Miles). Virginia's middle daughter Patricia Celso, Ed.D. of Florida (and her husband Nicholas Celso, Ed.D., J.D. and their children Bethany Celso, J.D. and Bryan Celso, D.P.T. and his wife Melissa and children, Cassidy and Bryanna). Virginia's youngest daughter, Deborah Hunter, Ph.D. of Moretown, Vt., a University of Vermont Professor and her husband, Gene Kazlow, J.D. and twins Nathaniel and Geoffrey). ....show SALISBURY - Kathy Cormier Hurlburt, age 75, died Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at her home in Salisbury. Mrs. Hurlburt was born in Middlebury on Aug. 10, 1934. She was the daughter of Shirley and Beatrice (Dutton) Ovitt. She received her education in local East Middlebury Schools. She had worked many years at Tops Restaurant in Middlebury. She had been employed for more that 45 years for Mrs. Patti Brakeley and for numerous years for Victoria Sappio. She was a member of the Middlebury V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens. She enjoyed time with her friends and traveling with her husband. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Earl A. Hurlburt, Sr., of Salisbury, whom she married Dec. 13, 1952 in Brandon; two sons, Earl A. Hurlburt, Jr. of Middlebury and James "Jim" Hurlburt and his wife, Lisa, of Bluffton, S.C.; three daughters, Laura Bougor and her husband, Larry, of Middlebury, Norma Leduc and her husband, Marcel, of Ripton and Debra Hurlburt and her husband, Russ Lawton, of Salisbury; a sister, Irene Piper and her husband, Cliff, of Middlebury; 12 grand- children; 16 great- grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive her. She was predeceased by a brother, Herbert Ovitt; and a sister, Barbara Piper. ....show SHELBURNE - Richard W. Hurlburt, 81, died Saturday, July 31, 2010, after a period of failing health, amidst the love and care of his family. Richard (Dick) was born June 25, 1929 in Quincy, Mass. to Harold and Mary Surette Hurlburt. Dick was an avid sea-lover, with an affinity for not only the ocean, but also Lake Champlain; specifically, Thompson's Point in Charlotte, where he spent many a summer season boating with family. A natural outdoorsman, Dick loved surf-fishing and shellfishing on Cape Cod; gardening, maintaining his grounds, and the natural wildlife surrounding his and his wife's home. Dick spent many years working for Volkswagen, including owning his own franchise in Taunton, Mass., and additionally served a good number of years as Sales Manager at Lewis Motors in South Burlington. For 12 years, Dick owned Vermont Food Experience with his wife and son, Rick. He physically, but not spiritually, leaves behind his loving wife and best friend, Anne P. Hurlburt; son, Richard C. Hurlburt; and daughters, Caroline M. Robbins and Christine A. Hurlburt-Corliss; grandchildren, Kiley Robbins, Alexander Hurlburt (his repeated AllStar baseball player), and Emily Robbins; stepchildren, Bob and Jill Paul, John and Patty Paul, Mickey Paul; and seven step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his four brothers and sisters and his stepson, Gus Paul. We will always remember Dick for his exceptional quick wit and ability to make immediate connections with strangers. His love for animals was remarkable and, regrettably, he also leaves behind his cherished dogs, Sampson, Molly, and Simon. There will be a brief Mass, held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in East Charlotte, on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010 at 10 a.m., followed by burial at Grandview Cemetery, also in Charlotte. ....show , 91, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010 in the Copley Manor of Morrisville. She was born Nov. 8, 1918 in Wolcott, the daughter of the late Asbury and Mamie (Stevens) Allen. She attended East Hill School in Wolcott and graduated from Hardwick Academy in the Class of 1935. On May 31, 1937, she married Earl Franklin Hurst in Keeseville, N.Y. They made their home in Wolcott for more than 32 years before moving to Morrisville in 1967. Gertrude was employed at the Hardwick Knitwear until she retired in the mid 1960s. She remained active by selling Avon, reading, cooking, embroidering, sewing and flower gardening. She enjoyed the time that she spent with her grandchildren. She was affiliated with the Wolcott Church of the Nazarene and past member of the Wolcott American Legion Post # 8 Auxiliary. Survivors include three sons, Clifford Hurst of Manchester, N.H., David Hurst and his wife, Carolyn, of Franklin, N.H. and William Hurst and his wife, Sheila, of Gilmanton, N.H.; two daughters, Carolyn Hale and her husband, Lawrence, of Morrisville and Marjorie Fitch and her husband, David, of Woodbury; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Earl, on Oct. 31, 1988; and nine siblings, Donald, Gordon, Robert and Paul Allen, Evelyn Wyman, Hazel Church, Dorotha Lambert, Barbara Viele and Kathryn Benson. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Wolcott Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Jeff Adams officiating. Born in Burlington, Vt. on Sept. 11, 1970, she was the daughter of Ruby (Northrip) Ingram Huston (husband, James, Sr.) of Monroe, Ohio, and the late Raymond Karl Ingram, Sr. Ms. Ingram was a 1988 graduate of Essex Junction High School and received her Associate's degree in computer science from Community College in Vermont. She attended Johnson State Teachers college and the University of Vermont in Burlington. She was a graduate clerk in the Computer Science department at Purdue University for nine years. While living in Vermont, she worked at various jobs in Computer Science. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Post 6689, Essex Junction, Vt., and a member of several internet game groups. She enjoyed reading, writing and singing. She always thought of others, and always had a smile on her face. Surviving with her mother and step-father are two brothers, Raymond Ingram, Jr. of Burlington, Vt. and Martin Ingram, Sr. (wife, Mary) of Essex Junction, Vt.; three sisters, Deborah Gilmond (husband, Allston "Joe") of Colchester, Vt., Donna Wrobel (husband, Tom) of Lisbon Falls, Maine, and Patricia Ward (husband, Patrick) of Colchester, Vt.; a step-brother, James Huston, Jr. (wife, Rebecca) of Fountain, Colo.; a step-sister, Jean Balko (husband, Steve) of Wellston, Ohio; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. ....show BURLINGTON - Kenneth Robert Irish, 82, a former resident of Burlington, died Tuesday, May 25, 2010 in Starr Farm Nursing Center following a lengthy illness. Ken was born in Burlington on Feb. 5, 1928, the son of Chester F. and Hazel M. (Hathaway) Irish. He attended area schools. Ken was a decorated U.S. Navy veteran and was later employed as a bus driver for Chittenden County. He was a member of St. Paul's Cathedral and the VFW. He enjoyed camping in his trailer at Lone Pine Campsites in Colchester. Ken was predeceased by his parents and brother Walter. He is survived by a daughter, Kim; a son, Brian; and his sister, Janice Duprey of Fla. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2010 in the chapel of Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home, 71 South Union Street, Burlington at 1:30 p.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service.
