DANIEL JAMES GIBSON
....show FLETCHER, Vt. - Daniel James Gibson, 60, of Fletcher, Vt. passed away unexpectedly from a ruptured aortic aneurism while hiking at Mt. Independence in Orwell, Vt. on Monday, March 29, 2010. He was a devoted and beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend, colleague and master. Dan was born in Colon, Panama on June 6, 1949 the son of Albert and Irene (Lawrence) Gibson. On Aug. 8, 1987 he married Maria Short, his best friend and life partner. They made their home for the past 25 years on eighteen beautiful acres and a 200 year old farm house in Fletcher. Dan surrounded himself with animals and plants, tending his flowers more than his vegetables. Over the years, he cared for and loved many dogs, cats and farm animals. He hobby-farmed Rambouillet sheep, a fine wool breed, until the money ran out. He had a particular love for border collies, who he trained to herd the flock and rush after Frisbees. Dan graduated from Burlington High School in 1967 and the University of Vermont in 1971 with a degree in zoology. He returned to UVM to study Wildlife Management. He started working at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont chemistry laboratory in 1978 then went on to complete a year of study in medical technology at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine in 1979. Dan continued to work at what evolved into Fletcher Allen Health Care, becoming a laboratory section manager and eventually directing Point of Care Testing. Since 2008 he has been a standards specialist in regulatory readiness for the Jeffords Institute for Quality. He enjoyed collaborating with his colleagues as they worked to assure quality healthcare at the hospital. Dan was recognized throughout the hospital. He was known for his intelligent problem solving, great sense of humor, and flamboyant neck ties. Although he never balanced his check book, he was elected treasurer of his high school class. Dan remained committed to his classmates, planning reunions and staying in touch with lifelong friends. He was active in the community. He had served as race director for the Fairfax Relays for many years. This cross country race was part sport and part carnival as athletes ran in costume to excellent rock music Dan selected. He spent many hours volunteering to clear a trail at the school for running and skiing. He was proud of his sons' sports accomplishments and became a loyal fan to Bellows Free Academy Fairfax cross country running, Nordic skiing, track and field and basketball. Dan started his life in Panama and is remembered for his early interest in animals as he dangerously coaxed a venomous fer-delance snake to play. Moving to Burlington as a preschooler, Dan's family bought the last completed house on the dirt road end of North Avenue. Across the street the cornfield would become Northgate. He loved his neighborhood and found ready friends to adventure down to the mouth of the Winooski River or set up soldiers on a back step. He and his father would fish for perch and his mother would cook up what they wrestled off of hooks. He wouldn't want to come inside were it not for "Winky-Dink and You" on TV and comic books to read. Living the Forest Gump life, Dan came of age in the turbulent sixties. He protested the Vietnam War while his birthday was drawn last in the 1969 draft lottery. He loved rock and roll music and found his way to Woodstock, and later picked himself out on the cover of Life magazine in that sea of muddy, sunbaked hippies. Always fulfilling his responsibilities to his job and family, Dan was happiest starting a day with no plans, heading out to drive rural Vermont with his camera and kayak, and spontaneously finding a hike. A life-long learner, he carried his field guides to better understand the flora. He knew the common and Latin names for many of Vermont's wild plants. He could describe the dance of the honey bee in detail. On more than one occasion a wild bird would recognize him as a part of nature and land on him. Dan was a passionate and accomplished skier and completed countless runs down Smuggler's Notch black diamond trails with grace and athleticism. In warmer weather he took frequent hikes up to the top of one of Smuggs' three peaks. He spent hours gazing out across the mountain tops in the warm breeze noticing what nature had to offer while his dogs panted nearby. He wanted to live his life like he was on vacation. Having an eternally youthful father had its benefits as Dan modeled play. He is remembered for planning elaborate birthday parties with themes to delight children. He wanted his kids to take life-advancing risks and saw no problem in his son dying his hair blue. He was a gentle and loving father who wanted the best for his kids. Dan hoped they would learn from what he saw as his mistakes. Dan has wisely moved on before the black flies hatched this spring. There were things that he didn't get to or do enough of (the bucket list): advancing his spirituality, visiting Ireland again, planting trees, driving cross country, composing a satisfactory photo landscape, arguing politics, biking Acadia, continuing to help with purple loose strife research, taking further pride in his sons as they each graduate this year, hiking in the soft rain, holding a future grandchild, dancing to Led Zeppelin, cutting sprays of lilacs to place by the bed, advancing social justice, paddling the Connecticut River, understanding Eckhart Tolle, improving the environment, catching anything in the fishing derby, and seeing the Redskins win another Super Bowl. Most importantly he did not get enough of laughing, crying, and relaxing with his loving friends. But, in the end, it was all, just enough. Thank you Dan for making us a part of your joyful ride. Dan is survived by his wife of 22 years, Maria Short, his son Connor Gibson and foster son Jeremy Lawrence (to whom he leaves his blue suede shoes), all of Fletcher; his sisters June Lee and her husband, Frank, of Fairfax and Gloria Gibson of Colchester; his parents inlaw Hugh and Florence Short of Richford; brothers- and sisters-in-law Frank and Helen Short of St. Albans, Michael Short of Burlington, Katie Bell of Sacramento, Calif., Maureen Short and Stan Katz of New Haven, Peter Short of Guerneville, Calif., Mariellen and Matthew Facchino, of San Jose, Calif., Christine Short of Putney, Eileen Short and Densil Hendrickson of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Julia and Scott Batdorff of Portland, Ore., and Deirdre Short of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Dan was uncle to Mike and Jennifer Lee and their children Jason, Jen, and Matthew of Burlington, Patrick and Justin Lee of Shelburne, Sue Lee and her daughter Jamie Robare of Burlington, Michelle and Layne Ballard and their children Catherine and Bryce of Gettysburg, Pa., and Christopher and Carrie Lee of Jericho. He was uncle-in-law to 21 nieces and nephews, and granduncle to many more. He was a fresh air father to Ian Weekes of Manhattan, NYC hosting him for eight. He leaves countless special friends, too many to name but too precious to forget. He will be missed by his beloved border collies Cady and Glen, two very friendly cats, Chester and Big Cat, the birds at the feeder, and the ravens he fed up in the woods. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, Apr. 5, 2010 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Ready Funeral & Cremation South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Apr. 6, 2010 at 11 a.m. in St. Mark Catholic Church, North Avenue, Burlington. A memorial celebration will follow the mass where people can share their recollections; place to be announced. A community page may be found on Facebook under "Dan Gibson Memories." GEORGE S. GORDON
....show SHELBURNE - George Stennett Gordon, age 85, died peacefully on Oct. 26, 2010 in The Arbors of Shelburne with his family by his side. George was born on June 16, 1925 in Short Hills, N.J., son of the late Frederic Sutterle Gordon and Winifred Martin Gordon. He graduated from the The Choate School in Wallingford, Conn., and entered Princeton University in 1942. While at Princeton, George was a member of the Charter Club. He interrupted his college studies to join the Naval Reserves at the start of WWII, serving in the Atlantic Theater with Blimp Squadron 12, and in the Pacific with the Naval Air Transport Service. Returning to Princeton after the war ended, and when not studying physics, George distinguished himself by shooting crows out of the tall pines that stood in President Dodd's backyard. After graduating in 1946 in the same class as his older brother, Fred, he worked for U.S Pipe and Foundry in Burlington, N.J. and the Applied Science Corporation of Princeton before buying Cook's Industrial Lubricants in Linden, N.J. with his childhood friend, Ross Barnes, also of Short Hills, N.J. and both Choate and Princeton. George lost the coin toss and so became President while Ross kept an eye on Marketing and Sales. Not surprisingly, the company prospered under this flawless management. George and Ross sold the company in 1980 to a large corporate interest and he retired in 1983. George married Patricia Ann Clarke of Summit, N.J. on Nov. 18, 1950. Together they raised their four children in an 1845 farmhouse outside of Princeton, N.J. Restoring, remodeling and maintaining the farmhouse and grounds was an ongoing, neverending project, but allowed George to hone his woodworking, welding and mechanical skills. He farmed its 80-acre backyard with his great friend and neighbor, John Hart. Farming parttime made for a very busy life and required strong tractor headlights. As a result, he was forced to squeeze much of his golf in on company time. He and Pat were charter members of the Beden's Brook Club in Skillman, N.J. He ultimately sold the farm in 1997 and, several years after retiring from farming and moving to warmer climes, he was delighted to learn that Boxwood Farm had become Carson Road Woods, a protected nature preserve. As a child, George spent summers with his family at the Mallett's Bay Club in Colchester. He himself purchased a summer home there in the late 60's so that his own family could enjoy the same activities on Lake Champlain. He sold the house in 1998, but he and his second wife, Lois, continued to spend many enjoyable years living on Lake Keowee in South Carolina. He regularly played golf, tennis and was an active member of the loosely organized Keowee Key Kayak & Canoe Club. George and Lois moved to Erie, Pa. in Aug. 2004, returning Lois to her roots. Throughout his life, George's interests and activities were many and included not only golf and tennis, but also target shooting with small-caliber weaponry and rifles, whether clay birds, the occasional pheasant, or crop-threatening varmint. He particularly enjoyed canoeing and kayaking in his later years. George was also predeceased by his young firstborn son, George Scott; by his wife and mother of his children, Patricia Clarke Gordon; by his sister, Norma Rixey Stratton; and by his brother, Frederic Sutterle Gordon, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Lois Sisson Wilson Gordon of Erie, Pa.; and by his four children, John F. Gordon and his wife, Barbara Moser, of Milton, Sandy Gordon Rounds and her husband, Frank R. Rounds, of Essex, Richard Gordon and his wife, Asuncion Rodriguez, of Madrid, Spain and Maggie Gordon of Hinesburg. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Elizabeth Gordon, Scott Rounds and Hannah Rounds. The family would like to thank the staff at The Arbors at Shelburne for the warm, compassionate care and respect shown for George during his final months. In accordance with George's wishes, there will be no calling hours. Interment and private ceremony will take place at Lakeview Memorial Park, Riverton, N.J. at the convenience of the family.

GLENN H. GRIFFITH
....show SOUTH BURLINGTON - Glenn H. Griffith, 79, died peacefully Sunday morning, in the Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. His closest friend and confidant, Nancy Farrell, was by his side, as she had been throughout his illness. He was born in Moretown on Feb. 11, 1931, to the late Margery (McIntyre) and William H. Griffith. He attended schools in Vergennes and Ferrisburg. After high school, Glenn served in the United States Army from 1949 to 1953, and was stationed in Berlin, Germany from June of '52 until his separation. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 14. Glenn worked for years as a dispatcher for the Vermont State Police. He had many friends among the ranks of the "troopers," and was in turn respected by them for the skillful service he provided. On Feb. 10, 1968, Glenn married the former Katherine LaBelle, and she became the light of his life. Glenn and Kathy lived very happily in a home they purchased together on Curtis Avenue in Burlington. Sadly, Kathy was waging a long-term battle of her own with bone cancer, and she lost her fight on Dec. 29, 1971. Glenn's eldest brother, Roger, died suddenly in 1973. Glenn is survived by Roger's children, Larry, Donald, Linda (Entrott), Irene Griffith, Diane (Rose), and their families. The children's mother, Harriet Griffith, resides with Diane in Addison. Glenn was a salesman for Sears, Roebuck and Co., and worked for a long time in the hardware division on Shelburne Road. He was well known for his wit and sense of humor, and many of his associates were dismayed when returning customers would ask specially to be waited on by Glenn. He always treated people the way he liked to be treated, with honesty and integrity. Glenn grudgingly retired from Sears when corporate changes took the fun out of his position. In 1990, Glenn lost his sister Edith McAllister, to ALS. Edith and John "Mac" McAllister's children, Cheryl, Gary and his family, and Judy survive him. Glenn lost his other sister, Phyllis, in 1998, to a long illness. Phyllis' twin brother, Phillip, of Lakeland, Fla., is the sole remaining sibling. Phillip's children Peter, Les(lie), and Martha (Poirier) and her family all reside in the local area. Les and his partner, Melissa (Moore) shared the blessing of Glenn's care with Nancy, and we are all better in so many ways for having shared the experience. Glenn worked part-time for the city of Burlington before finally retiring fully. Glenn had two great loves in his life. The first was his beloved Persian cat, Spook, who he allowed to take over his life in 1994. Spook was treated and lived like a king, befitting his lineage. He was a "one man" cat, and didn't tolerate any foolishness or false advances from anyone but Glenn. Glenn was saddened when Spook died suddenly earlier this year. In the late 90's, Glenn's nephew, Les, introduced him to the wonders of "personal computing." While he may not have fully understood what was going on "inside the box," Glenn loved working with photos, genealogy study, recipes, and staying in touch with friends and family via email. While advancing his knowledge of photo editing, he met the other love of his life, Nancy Farrell, at a senior education class. He and Nancy began assisting in the teaching of some of the classes, and their common interest blossomed into a mutually supportive relationship. Nancy was an integral part of Glenn's life for the past decade, sharing their common interests. She also shared her family with Glenn. Nancy's daughter, Shawn Marie, her husband Mike (Landers), and their beautiful daughter, Chloe, became extended family. Glenn loved the time he spent with Chloe, and she brightened his life with her presence. Nancy owns and operates a ceramic shop from her home, and her "girls" - the extended circle of customers formed over the years - took Glenn on as a part of their lives. He loved the camaraderie and friendship which they offered. Nancy stood lovingly by Glenn's side throughout his protracted illness; encouraging, supporting, and guiding him in so many ways. Nancy and Les would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Drs. David McFadden, Ruth Heimann, and Marc Greenblatt for saving Glenn's life when it was originally threatened by pancreatic cancer, and then for extending it through their specialized care and treatment. At every step, they treated us as members of a team with a common goal. While we knew the outcome was inevitable, they shared the fight with us, improving Glenn's quality of life at every step of the way. Glenn was challenged with many physical issues, and the entire staff at the FAHC was a blessing. The nurses working the chemo ward are all exceptionally gifted, and we were touched by both the manner in which they performed their difficult tasks, and the humor with which they lightened the mood. We also thank Drs. Bellomo, O'Brien, Pitcher and Nagle for their years of attention, both professional and personal. They offered both in equal measure. A special thanks also to Kathy McBeth, a member of the Cancer Patient Support Program at FAHC. Every meeting with Kathy brightened Glenn's outlook, and he deeply valued the hours they spent in counsel. She is a singularly special person. Jennifer (Jenni) May was always available, and caring, offering support and guidance, and hands-on assistance through the maze of nutritional care. We suspect that if Glenn is having his way, he is eating cheeseburgers and drinking milkshakes, completely disregarding Jenni's best efforts. We thank the entire staff of the Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center. Glenn was a resident there on a few occasions over the last few years, and he was always treated like family. Indeed, during his last stay, many of the staff recalled Glenn from previous visits. We made the decision to allow Glenn to complete his life's journey there, because we saw the caring and compassion which they brought to his service. We will be forever grateful to the entire team from the "second floor." In keeping with Glenn's wishes, there will be no final viewing. He will be cremated, and his remains interred in the Williston East Cemetery, at the discretion of the family. A celebration of Glenn's life will be held at the Ferrisburg United Methodist Church, on Saturday, Aug. 14, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Glenn requested that friends consider a donation to the SeniorNet of Vermont, PO Box 64694, Burlington, VT, 05406-4694, or to the Cancer Patient Support Program at FAHC.
