JOAN McCLURE FOSTER
....show ESSEX JUNCTION - On Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, Joan McClure Foster died suddenly from injuries related to a car accident. At 71, she loved life and still loved traveling to see new places. Born in Springfield, Mass., she grew up in New England and was in the Essex Junction graduating class of 1957. To this day she has kept strong relationships with all of her high school classmates and celebrated her 50th high school reunion just three years ago. Early in life, Joan married twice and had four children. She completed her bachelor's degree, remarried, then spent 22 years in Texas. During this time, she was a Purchasing Manager and Cost Accountant for a Reynolds Aluminum plant. She was always a sight-seer and would stop at all tourist spots along her journeys. One favorite hobby was photography and her travels gave her the opportunity to capture many landscape portraits. After retirement, she was "on the road" more than she was at home. Joan loved every minute of each adventure. She was a wonderful woman, full of life. In 2002, Joan became a breast cancer survivor, along with managing her Parkinson's. She never gave up and even went skydiving at the age of 70! Joan was predeceased by her parents, Alfred and Edytha McClure of Essex Junction. She was also predeceased by two husbands, Andrew White and Pete Foster. She is survived by her brother, Robert McClure of Tyler, TX; and her four children, Eric Christopherson of Wooster, Ohio, Neil Christopherson of Worcester, Mass., Colin Christopherson of Somerville, Mass., and Jennifer Harrison of Riner, Va. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1966 and remained a member until 1971. Will was a young father who took responsibility for others from an early age. While taking as many as 20 credits at UVM by night he held full time jobs by day. One of his first jobs was operating dump trucks and heavy equipment in the construction of Interstate 89 in 1966. He held a series of construction jobs including with Philo Construction and co-owned a swimming pool franchise. In 1971, Will was Director of External (Alumni) Affairs at UVM, a sometimes thankless job as it coincided with UVM dropping both cakewalk and its football team. Will also served on the ski patrol for many years. He began working at Edlund Company in 1972 and eventually became CEO, a position he held at the time of his death. Will was a man who loved adventure and speed. He loved anything he could drive, ride, or fly. From the age of 14 Will had jobs so that he could buy vehicles and tinker with them. Well before he was old enough to take to the highways, he practiced driving the family cars in the fields around his house. He was never without a car, truck, or motorcycle. At the age of 19 he made his first solo airplane flight from the tiny grass strip of the Champlain Airport. Will enjoyed riding his motorcycle in warmer months, iceboating on Lake Champlain in winter and flying his seaplane from the ramp at his lakeside home. His interest in vintage Formula car racing led him to compete at famous tracks around the eastern U.S. Will valued his many friendships and enjoyed friends from all walks of life. He loved foreign travel and his participation in YPO, Young Presidents' Organization, took him to exotic destinations, another piece of the rich tapestry of Will's life. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. For those wishing to make a donation in Will's name, the family suggests the Charlotte Land Trust, PO Box 43, Charlotte, Vt. 05445 or HowardCenter, 208 Flynn Ave Ste 3J, Burlington, Vt. 05401.
