RON VAN NOSTRAND
....show SALISBURY - The family of Ron Van Nostrand sadly announces his passing on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010 at his home on Lake Dunmore, Salisbury. Ron was born in Mount Vernon, N.Y. on Jan. 18, 1935 to Edwin and Teresa Van Nostrand. He graduated from Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park, N.Y. in 1952 and entered the U.S. Air Force shortly thereafter, where he was assigned to B-36's of the Strategic Air Command (SAC). He qualified for Combat Alert flight crew status in 1955 and with the arrival of B-52's in 1956, flew in excess of 1000 hours on Alert B-52D's and G's of the 42nd Bomb Wing, Loring Air Force Base, ME. In 1956, having won a major bombing competition against top teams from U.S. and NATO Air Forces, his crew was awarded an Outstanding Unit Citation and named best in the Strategic Air Command. This crew was to later die in a crash, but in a stroke of bittersweet good fortune, Ron had missed this flight due to a family medical emergency. It was during this period that Ron met and married his beloved wife of 53 years, Elizabeth, formerly of Stockholm, ME. Ron left the Air Force in 1962 and went to work for RCA's Defense Electronic Systems Division, where he worked in various technical and managerial capacities on the "Ranger" and "POSS" satellite programs, as well as managing Guidance Systems Checkout on the LEM Lunar Lander Module of the "Apollo" program. He and his family moved to Vermont in 1965 to continue working on the Apollo program at Simmonds Precision Products (now Goodrich Aerospace). As a Production Engineer, he managed the assembly of Propellant and Oxidizer Systems Test Consoles and fuel measurement probes. Upon the successful completion of Apollo, Ron managed Simmond's traditional aerospace products, was subsequently promoted to Manager of Prototype Operations, Value Engineer, VE Manager, and then Manager of Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering. His next assignment was to manage sub-contract technical support on a major IBM contract. Upon its completion, he was promoted to Manager of Engineering Administration, and in 1987, to Director of Operations Support, which involved the management of eight departments, including all Engineering computing assets. Ron became a tireless proponent for the acquisition of Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing Systems (CAD/CAM) and vigorously championed the development of state of the art design capabilities at Simmonds. By the time of his retirement in 1992, he had implemented one of the finest, integrated design systems in the aerospace community. This and his many other contributions over the years at Simmonds were recognized, along with numerous promotions, by six Outstanding Performance awards and nomination for the prestigious "Founders Award". As a widely recognized CAD/CAM and "Factory of the Future" innovator and authority, Ron lectured at technology symposiums in major American and European cities; Boston, New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, and others. He also published numerous articles and reports on the subject for various technical, design, management, and financial journals. Ron attended evening division programs at the Community College of the Air Force, Northeastern University and the University of Vermont, majoring in Electrical Engineering and Business Administration. He was a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and its Automated Systems branch (ASTME), the Society of Logistics Engineers and was a charter member of the Society of American Value Engineers (SAVE). He served in the Vermont Air National Guard from 1974 to 1986. Ron was an Alfa Romeo enthusiast and took great pride in his pristine '74 Alfa Spider which was the vehicle of choice for his frequent trips to play golf at Basin Harbor. He also derived great pleasure from his Lake Champlain Home and the peace and solitude it afforded. His standards of excellence, devotion to family, and wonderfully mischievous sense of humor will be dearly missed. Besides his wife, Elizabeth; he is survived by his daughter, Valerie Strong of Vergennes; son, Mark and his wife, Nancy, of Salisbury; grandchildren, Tess, Travis and Timothy Strong, and Seth and Sarah Van Nostrand; and great- grandchildren, Jodeci and Jarod. Per his wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral.
