ADDISON / PANTON – Donald G. Mina
....show , age 65, died on Monday, June 28, 2010 from complications from a stroke that occurred in March, 2010. Though he was a resident of Leesburg, Florida he spent many memorable years in Vermont. Don was born in Stratford, Connecticut, and was the son of George and Viola (Wuagon) Mina. In 1948 he moved to Massapequa Park, on Long Island, New York and lived there until 1963 where he graduated from high school and married his high school sweetheart, Vicki (Thompson) Mina. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for four years and he trained at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas and then he was stationed in Germany for two years. While in Europe, he and Vicki and their daughter Marybeth toured the European continent and visited relatives in Italy. They would return to Long Island where he was stationed at the Westhampton Air Force Base on Long Island until 1967 when he was honorably discharged. Thereafter, he enrolled at Hofstra University and earned his BA degree in business in 1972. He entered the insurance industry in 1972 and earned a significant reputation as a re-insurance underwriting expert in a very complicated and competitive business environment. Though he lived in Cornwall, New York, he worked in New York City and Boston, Massachusetts until 1990 when he was medically retired because of rheumatoid arthritis. In 1991, Don married Sue (Heim) Mina of New Canaan, Connecticut. He and Sue lived there until 1998 when they moved to Leesburg, Florida. Though most individuals would have slowed down because of his medical condition, this was not Donald’s makeup. Though he could not work any longer in an office, that did not stop him from traveling to the family Vermont home on Lake Carmi and spending summers with his wife and grandchildren. Additionally, through the ensuing years, Don would go through more than twelve medical operations in replacing body joints that were ravaged by the rheumatoid arthritis. In spite of his medical infirmities, he found time to fulfill a lifelong dream of earning his private pilot’s license in 1994 after being trained at the Swanton Vermont Pilot Center and also in Danbury Connecticut. He enjoyed the freedom of flying and he was a certified pilot until his passing. In 2000, The family camp on Lake Carmi was sold after 50 years of wonderful memories. Not to be away from Vermont long, in 2004 he returned to assist his brother, Bruce, in developing four-acre grape vineyard in Addison, Vermont. As the vineyard overseer, though he was medically limited, Don exhibited an unbridled passion when it came to “his grape vines” and the vineyard. His commitment and excellence in knowing all he could know about grape growing helped develop a first-class vineyard in Addison which gained the respect and admiration of other vintners in Vermont. In 2008, after another 125 acres was purchased by his brother on Route 22A, in Panton, Don would oversee the development on Panton Hills Vineyards with the initial planting of four acres. The first harvest is scheduled for this September and though he will not be there with us, his memory and passion will always be there. Don’s other passion was being a grandfather and he loved returning to Florida and Massachusetts. He was known as “Papa” and he will be sorely missed by Samantha, Jake, Max, Ben, Gretchen, Jack, Riley, Tegan, Alyssa, Nicole and Katherine. He leaves behind his wife Sue (Suzanne) of 18 years, his daughter, Marybeth and her husband Dean of Foxboro, Massachusetts, his daughter, Michelle and her husband, Harry of Hanson, Massachusetts, his son Mark and his wife Stacy of Mansfield, Massachusetts, his step-daughter, Sue Gladu, and her husband, Leo, of Floral City, Florida, his brother Bruce and his wife, Gloria, of Roslyn Heights, New York, and his niece, Karen (Mina) Diaz and her husband Mike of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas, and grand-niece, Olivia and his nephew, Robert and wife Lynda of West Chester, Pennsylvania and grand-niece Kathryn, eleven grandchildren and many cousins. ....show , age 57, was called home to the Lord on Wednesday evening August 25, 2010 at her home with her loving family at her side after enduring a long 10 year battle with endometrial cancer. She was born September 22, 1952 in St. Albans the daughter of Shirley (Goodhue) Mudgett and the late Frederick Mudgett. Monica graduated from Richford High School in 1970. She continued her education and earned her Associates Degree in Child Development at Community College of Vermont. She married her high school sweetheart John C. Legault on September 4, 1971 and they had three children which they raised in the family home in Richford and enjoyed many happy years. Together Monica and John worked side by side for 10 years farming. Their life together brought many challenges as health issues entered. Their love for each other and their bond with God carried them through many ordeals. Monica’s greatest achievement was fulfilled in her lifetime, that of being a wife, mother and grandmother. This was evident throughout her life as she always put her family first and foremost as she displayed her caring heart and ways along with her love laughter and joy. The job that fulfilled her dreams was working at the Franklin Central School. For to her this was not a job but a second home. The minute she walked through the doors she would always stop and whisper a little prayer, “God help me to see the children through your eyes and not through mine”. It was evident that God honored this for she was drawn to the children like a magnet and they to her. Through her final stages of this journey, Monica was surrounded by love through her family, friends, pastor and church family. She was under a Caring Bridge website which she always would look forward to seeing her caring entries that were made to help her through the journey that she was on. She always found this very uplifting. We want to thank family and friends for their genuine care that helped her in transitioning through this journey. Monica leaves behind by her husband of 39 years, John Legault of Berkshire;; her children, Kimberly Legault-Forty and her husband Matthew of Franklin, Tracie Hammond and her husband Scott of Tampa, FL, and Michael Legault and his wife Angie of Berkshire; her grandchildren that always brought her joy and made her smile, Ryan Legault and Ethan Legault; and 3 beloved step grandchildren, Brett, Colin & Kyle Hammond. She also leaves behind her mother, Shirley Mudgett of Richford; her five siblings and their spouses, Debra & Louie Hardy of Berkshire, Nancy & James Jewett of Franklin, Michael & Pam Mudgett of Bakersfield, Terry & Brent Martin of Bangor, ME, and Faith & Kenny Johnson of Franklin; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles & cousins. Also many very dear and special friends that we will not name in fear of leaving someone out. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 30, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Richford 1st Baptist Church, School St., Richford with Pastor Lyle Willey officiating. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in the Berkshire Center Cemetery. Visiting hours will be private and held at the convenience of the family Monica envisioned a Blue Light Candle Campaign encouraging prayer for people experiencing a journey that was similar to hers. To hear of the places that these candles were being lit, even in other countries, gave her a sense of warmth in her heart to know that many prayers were being said for many and that was her hope. Monica has asked that a fund called Monica’s Blue Candle of Hope be established to help children attend Camp Ta-Kum-Ta. Her family encourages that in lieu of flowers a contribution be made to Monica’s Blue Candle of Hope C/O Spears Funeral Home, P.O. Box 396, Enosburg Falls, VT 05450

Franklin – Robert J. “Uncle Bobby” Pierce
....show died on October 6, 2010 in St. Albans at the age of 97. The second of 5 brothers, he was born in Franklin on August 2, 1913, the son of Elbridge Leon and Mabel (Morgan) Pierce. “Uncle Bobby’s” early years were spent on the family farm in Franklin. Later, he moved to MA where he operated the John A. Sessions Dairy Farm in Hadley. In 1988, he moved back to his home town of Franklin where he generously devoted his time to assisting his niece and nephew, with labor and wisdom, in the operation of the E.K. Pierce Family Farm. While farming he always used the latest labor saving equipment, for example, he had a milking parlor well before such innovations were common in Vermont. “Uncle Bobby” liked to call himself a “thinking Republican”, “ fiscally conservative and socially liberal”. He was a believer in the “Death with Dignity” initiative which he had hoped would become law in his lifetime. Robert was, even in his latest years, well aware of international, national and local news. He read the daily and always had a wise, common sense understanding of events. Robert was the historian of former townspeople for the Pierce Family. He was always keen to tell of relatives, their accomplishments and exploits and the Pierce family connections to their families. There were many quaint, humorous and poignant anecdotes in the history of the town. Robert became the patriarch of the Pierce family, outliving, by many years, his 4 brothers. His indigenous wisdom was offered, but never imposed on anyone. He was the soul of modesty and dignity and all of his Pierce relatives saw him as a role model for aging gracefully. About 15 years ago, Robert started an annual family reunion event around Labor Day. Pierce relatives, both distant and close, including Robert’s son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren from MA came faithfully to the get-together at Lake Carmi. The annual reunion tradition continues to this day and will continue into the future. Robert faithfully delivered Meals on Wheels to the “old folks” in town until his 90th birthday. He insisted on living alone, in his own home, until an injury required hospitalization 2 weeks before his death. Robert was a director of Porter-Phelps-Huntington Foundation, Inc. for many years as well as a director and building committee chairman of the Franklin Homestead, Inc., a past board member of the Planning Commission in Franklin and a delegate for DHIA and Eastern Artificial Insemination. Robert is survived by his son, Billy Jacobs and wife, Elizabeth of Colrain, MA; granddaughters Cynthia Forbes and her husband Ron and their children Kate and Amy and Wendy Jacobs; 13 nieces and nephews and several great and great great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Jane (Hackett) Pierce on June 22, 1972. They were married April 8, 1949. He was also predeceased by his brothers Charles, Elbridge, Philip and Winston. A celebration of Robert’s life will be held on Sunday, October 24, 2010 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM in the Felco Room at the Franklin Homestead. Interment will take place at the convenience of Robert’s family in the Franklin Village Cemetery. Should friends desire, gifts in Robert’s memory may be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, VT 05478. Robert’s family would like to thank his friends and neighbors who helped keep his driveway and walk clear of snow, his lawn mowed and his newspapers delivered to his doorstep. Uncle Bobby’s fondest wish was to remain at home and these kindnesses helped realize his wish.
