....show , age 50, passed away unexpectedly at his home on January 1, 2010 in David City, Nebraska. He was born on May 11, 1959 in St. Albans, VT the son Arlene (Dominque) King and the late Hollis King of Richford, VT. Peter was a resident of David City, NE for the past 10 years. He was employed in the shipping and receiving department at Kawasaki Motors in Lincoln, NE. Peter spent most of his life in Richford, VT. He attended Richford high school, where he enjoyed playing basketball. After high school Peter joined the National Guard and then the Army, he received an honorable discharge from both. Peter was a dreamer and always followed his dreams whether they worked out or not. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed playing cards and darts with his friends. Peter also loved playing music, just like his father. He was part of several bands here in Vermont as well as one in David City, called The X-Factor. His band performed in his memory on January 8, 2010 at his home where there was a celebration of his life. He is survived by his mother Arlene King of Richford; significant other, Patty Ibsguard; her children Kaylyn and Colton; a daughter Samantha King and granddaughter Katelynn Randall, all of David City, NE; sons Austin King of Stromsburg, NE and Pat Curtis of Richford. A brother, Dale King of Richford; five sisters, Helen Hoose of South Burlington; Maggie Monty and her husband Robert of Hinesburg, VT; Barb Embury and her husband Glenn of Berkshire; Lori Sampietro and her husband Keith of Montgomery; and Holly Ryea and her husband George of Richford. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and one great-great niece; best friends, Steve Dumont and Robert Martin; and mother of Sam, Alice Lafrance of Milton. Besides his father, Peter was predeceased by a brother in law, Mathias Hoose; and good friend, Guy Bouilette. A memorial service will be held on Saturday January 16, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Light House Assembly of God located on Horseshoe Road in Berkshire, VT.
BAKERSFIELD – Roy Guy “Junior” Allen
....show , age 85, husband of Rose (Gillespie) Allen, passed away Saturday, January 2, 2010 at the Franklin County Rehab Facility in St. Albans with his family at his side. He was born September 17, 1924 in Monkton, VT the son of the late Pearley Roy Allen & Lillian Eliza (Holley) Allen. Roy grew up and attended school in Lincoln, Vermont where his parents ran a small farm. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving stateside during WWII. On September 28, 1945 he married the former Rose Gillespie. After Roy’s honorable discharge, he and Rose started farming in Jeffersonville. He was backed by Frank Jones who was like a father figure and believed they would be successful. They moved to Bakersfield in 1961 and bought a farm where they raised their six sons and continued to be successful dairy farmers. They sold their cows in 1984 and continued to work the land selling hay and firewood for several years after. He attended the Bakersfield 1st Congregational Church. Roy enjoyed going to hunting camp with his sons and grandsons. He also enjoyed attending farm auctions, horse pulling events, county fairs, and family reunions, visiting State parks and snowmobiling. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rose Allen of Bakersfield; his children and their families; son, Roy G. Allen, Jr his wife Sheila of Bakersfield, their children Roy “Buddy”Allen, III his wife Sarah, and Tammy McCoy and her husband Kenneth; son, Rodney Allen his wife Deanna of Bakersfield and their children, Jammie & Mark Allen; son, Roderick “Rick” Allen his wife Carol of Bakersfield and their daughter, Sherry Boylan and her husband Joddie; son, Ross Allen his wife Ann of Bakersfield and their children, Travis his wife Louise, Kami Farr her husband Gabe, and Kristin Delehanty and her husband Cary; son, Rock Allen his wife Joanne of Sheldon and their children Tenylle & Ramsey; 15great grandchildren, Justin, Carol Ann, Maria, William, Brandon, Kennedy Rose, Madeline Rose, Alexis, Chelsea, Colton, Griffin, Candace, Ryan, Eric, and Alexander; 5 siblings, Pearley Allen and his wife Lucille of Essex Center, Harold Allen of New Haven, Donald Allen and his wife Margaret of Williston, Barbara McGee and her husband Dick of Shelburne, and Larry Allen and his wife Ruth of East Lawton, MI; several nieces and nephews. RICHFORD – Florian J. Turcotte
....show , age 87, passed away Saturday morning, January 9, 2010 at the Brownway Residence in Enosburg Falls. He was born in St. Zephirin de Courveil, Que. Canada on August 23, 1922 the son of the late Edouard & Jeannette (Proulx) Turcotte. Florian moved to Vermont in 1949 when he purchased a farm in Montgomery Center. He then moved to Richford in 1958 where he purchased a farm that he operated until his retirement in 1970 when he sold his cows. He also worked for Sweat-Comings in Richford for a short time after moving to Richford. Following his retirement from farming, Florian operated Northland Dairy (now The Abbey) in Sheldon for several years. He was also a self-employed carpenter working mainly on his own apartment houses. Florian was a hard worker but always made time for his favorite hobby of working with race horses. Along with his wife, they enjoyed going to fairs throughout Vermont & Quebec. He is survived by 4 sons, Cyrille Turcotte and his wife Brenda of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Michael Turcotte and his wife Gina of Tampa, FL, Paul Turcotte and his wife Ruthanne of Jackson,TN and Daniel Turcotte and his wife Debra of Richford; 5 daughters, Helene Turcotte and her friend Richard Baillargeon of St. Albans, Micheline Beauregard of San Diego, CA , Huguette Turcotte of San Diego, CA , Pauline Donaldson and her husband Peter of Sarnia, Ont. and Linda Lafontaine and her husband Dennis of Richford; 19 grandchildren, 16 great grand children; his siblings, Laval Turcotte and his wife Roseanne, Therese Jutras, Marie-Paul Jutras and Marie-France Janelle, all residing in Quebec. Besides his parents, Florian was predeceased by his wife, Jeanne D’Arc (Cote) Turcotte. They were married on July 5, 1945. He was also predeceased by 2 sons, Andre & Raymond Turcotte, a great grandson, Ian; and a brother Normand Turcotte. No funeral services will be held at this time. She was born April 18, 1906 in Highgate Center the daughter of the late Alfred & Eliza (Touchette) Ploof. Alberta was a resident of Montgomery Center most of her life and was a member of St. Isisdores Catholic Church and the Ladies of St. Anne. She was also a former member of the Montgomery Senior Citizens and the Montgomery Grange. She had worked as a cook for the Montgomery Elementary School for 12 years. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Theresa & Romeo Lamore, Connie & Arthur “Bill” McFarland all of Montgomery, and Walter & Shirley Lumbra of Johnson; 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren; a sister, Malberge Mercy of Enosburg Falls; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Austin L. Lumbra; 2 brothers, Roger & Rolland Ploof; and 4 sisters, Agnes Gauthier, Blanche Prive, Reina Mayotte & Floris Lumbra. ESSEX JUNCTION – Nancy Kay Benjamin
....show , 68, ascended into Heaven on Friday, January 15th to be with her daughter Karen, while at home surrounded by her loving family. She had a courageous battle with Myelofibrosis for over five years. She was born on June 18th, 1941 in Savanna, IL to the late Percy H. and Mary Ellen (Coats) Geelhart. She grew up in many towns along the Milwaukee Railroad from Chicago, IL to Seattle, WA where her father worked. Nancy received her Registered Nurse degree in Seattle before moving to Milwaukee, WI where she met and married her husband of over 44 years, N. James Benjamin, on September 11th, 1965 in Elgin, IL. Together they moved to his home State of Vermont in April 1966 and has been a true Vermonter ever since. Nancy’s true passion in life was in her kind manner with always putting others first, making her a very special person as a mother, grandmother and friend to all who met her. Whether it be on family trips with family and friends to her favorite destination, Disney World, an annual picnic to the mountains of Stowe, or cooking a turkey dinner for all to enjoy, all were welcome with open arms. Her home was made special by her various collections from her travels and the time she spent on family photo albums. At Christmas time she always found more enjoyment in the giving than receiving, and always did very well to that end. Travel throughout the US and New Zealand were always more special and enjoyable when shared with her children and grandchildren. She worked as a Registered Nurse in the maternity ward at FAHC for almost 20 years and always handled the babies with special love and caring. Nancy is survived by her children and grandchildren: daughter Debra & Kenneth Crook and children Sarianna, Carl and Sean of Whangarei, New Zealand; daughter Karen’s children Shannon, Thomas, and Maria Magnan and their father Joseph Magnan of Fairfield; daughter Susan & Michael Scarano and son Dominic of Fishkill, New York; son Stephen of Alpharetta, Georgia; son Jeffrey & Spryng and children Mylie, Hannah, and Danielle from Johnson; and son Timothy & Amber and children Tristan and Ian from Essex Junction. She was predeceased by daughter Karen Magnan. Other surviving family include: brother William & Karen Geelhart of Nevada, IA; sister Patricia & William Buban of Rockford, IL; brother-in-law Bruce Benjamin of Swanton; sister-in-law Sandra Andersen of Franklin; brother-in-law Michael & Denna Benjamin of Franklin; and sister-in-law Mary & Timothy Bates of Franklin. Special thanks to Dr. Chris Holmes and nurses from FAHC, especially Jo-Anne Nielson, and Dr. Ruben Mesa from the Mayo Clinic for their superb efforts in helping to fight the Myelofibrosis disease. ....show – In the early morning hours of January 16, 2010, Roy G. Judd, found peace with his eternal Father. Born on September 6, 1921 to Noah & Dorothy (Griggs) Judd and raised on the family farm on Sutton Mountain (Quebec) until he met the mother of his children, the late Anna Jean Johnson. Roy worked many years on the Maurice Hammond farm on the State Park Road in East Franklin. On May 31, 1969 he married Ruth L. (Miller) Place and soon after moved to St. Rock’s (Fairfield, VT) to work on the Howrigan Farm formerly the Abel Farm. Upon his retirement in 1987, they moved to the Pine Manor in Alburgh and resided there until October of 2009 at which time they made their home in St. Albans with their daughter, Tammy Cook. Roy enjoyed visits from family and friends, taking “Mystery Bus Trips” with C.I.D.E.R., journaling daily, going to church. He also enjoyed attending fairs especially the Brome Fair. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in St. Albans. Roy was very proud to become a U.S. Citizen on September 18, 1997. Roy is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ruth Judd of St. Albans; his children, Dianne Comstock and her partner, Gary Wilson of St. Albans, Rodney Judd of Fairfield, Gary Judd and his wife Leisha of Franklin, Tammy Cook and her partner Leo Roberge of St. Albans, Patti Judd of Richford, Julie King and her husband Wendell Jr. of St. Albans, Deborah Bolio and her husband Arnold of Middlesex, Karleen Place of Fairfield, and Dianne Rounds and her husband Ted of Essex Jct; 15 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren to be born in 2010; siblings, Evelyn Judd of Ontario, and Sidney Judd and his wife Madeline of Sutton, Que.; sisters-in-law, Pauline Terwilliger of Fairfax, and Helen Miller of No. Troy; a special niece, Linda Kraak and her family of Ontario; and many cousins and good friends. Roy was predeceased by his parents; his son, Dale Judd in 2007; and a brother-in-law, Elden Judd in 2009. She was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church. She is survived by her great nephew, Alan Coulombe of Enosburg Falls. Madeline was a 1964 graduate of Franklin High School and a 1965 graduate of the Fanny Allen School of Nursing. She worked for many years as a L.P.N. in area nursing homes and Doctor’s offices. She also worked for the Franklin County Home Health Agency. She is survived by her children, Mary Ann Preston her husband Justin and their children, Tabitha & Orin of Swanton; and Scott Pelkey his wife Michelle and their children Daniel & Katie of Sheldon Springs; her extended family, Gene & Denise Savoy and their children, Becky, Chris, Lauren & Caleb of Maine; a special cousin, Carolyn “Kay” Lafontaine of Richford; brother-in-law, Daniel Pelkey of Bakersfield; special nieces, Shirley Wells of Westbrook, ME and Peggy Reed of Everett, MA; and special friends, Darlene & Richard Cooper of Franklin. ST. ALBANS – Faustine T. Garrow, RN
....show , age 86, Our Mom passed away on Wednesday morning January 27, 2010 after a brief period of declining health. She was born March 31, 1923 in Richford the daughter of the late Ethan R. & Dazel (Shangraw) Thompson. Faustine was a 1941 graduate of Richford High School. She attended the St. Albans Hospital School of Nursing graduating in 1944. On October 31, 1945 she married the love of her life, Richard Garrow who predeceased her on June 27, 1984. They resided in St. Albans where Faustine worked as a private duty nurse for several area families and also at the St. Albans Hospital. Once she started raising her family she took time away from nursing and helped her husband who was employed at the Hick’s Funeral Home. In 1954 Faustine & Richard moved to Essex Junction. She went back to nursing in 1968 as a floor nurse and then charge nurse in the I.C.U. at the Fanny Allen Hospital in Colchester, retiring after many years of dedicated service. Faustine enjoyed spending her winters in Winter Haven, FL and her summers at Lake Carmi. She also enjoyed many years of skiing with her family at Smuggler’s Notch. She was a sports enthusiast and avid golfer. She loved to watch her favorite teams, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Giants. Faustine was a member of the Enosburg Falls Red Hats. She enjoyed reading and knitting, especially for her grandchildren and the new born babies at the Winter Haven Hospital. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Martel and her husband Christopher of Richford, and Stephanie Garrow of St. Albans; her grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Jessica Shurlow and her husband Scott of Rutland, Joseph Shepard of Burlington, and Nicholas Garrow Randos of Manchester, NH; her nephew, Rick Thompson his wife Sue and their family of Jay; seven step grandchildren, and four step great grandchildren; several cousins. Besides her parents and husband, Faustine was predeceased by her brother E. Rockwood Thompson. She was employed at the Montgomery School House Toy Factory for 10 years and then at I.B.M. for 17 years retiring in 2001. She enjoyed quilting, playing BINGO and going out to eat. She is survived by her husband, William “Bill” Hamilton Sr. of West Berkshire. Jeannie & Bill were married August 1, 1964 and enjoyed 45 years of marriage. She is also survived by her children, B.J. Hamilton “Bill Jr”. of West Berkshire, Kathy Westcom her husband David and their children, Kayla, Alayna & Jaren of Bakersfield, and Brian Hamilton his wife Angel and their children, Colby & Devon of Richford; her siblings, Joseph E. RICHFORD – Raymond “Mark” Paradis
....show , age 51, passed away Monday afternoon February 1, 2010 at his home in Richford with his family at his side. He was born August 21, 1958 in St. Albans the son of Raymond J. & Amanda (Vachon) Paradis. Mark grew up working on his family’s dairy farm and after high school graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving from 1977 until he received an honorable discharge in 1981. He then went to work for I.B.M. for a short period and then entered the Farmer’s Work Program which sent him to Diesel Tech School in Enfield, CT. Following the completion of his schooling he worked for Willey Racine’s for 3 months and then for the past 23 years he has worked for Vaillancourt Transport and also worked part time for Mark St. Pierre. Mark had also served in the Vermont Army National Guard. He enjoyed playing cribbage especially on Tuesday night at the American Legion Cribbage League, also camping at Lake Eden and most of all spending time with his wife and children. He was born September 14, 1935 in Mount Vernon, New York the son of the late Andrew R. Scott, Sr. & Mary (McNab) Scott. Andy was a 1953 graduate of Bethel High School. Following high school went to work for Vanderbilt Chemical Co. for a few years. He then joined the Connecticut National Guard and then entered the U.S. Army receiving an honorable discharge in 1963. Following his military service he went to work for Kimberly Clark Paper Co. as a Machine Tender Paper Maker for 30 years retiring in 1997. Andy and his partner, Patricia Potvin were longtime residents of New Milford, CT and since the early 2000’s made their home on Enosburg Mountain where he enjoyed maple sugaring. With both parents being born in Scotland, Andy was very proud of his Scottish Heritage. He was also a NASCAR enthusiast, attending the Daytona 500 for many years. He is survived by his partner, Patricia Potvin of Enosburgh; his daughter, Beverly H. Stewart her husband Emmett and their children, Missy, Matthew & Megan of Austin, TX; his son, Andrew Garry Scott his wife Elzimar and his daughter Angie of Waterbury, CT; his sister, Anne Beuttenmuller of Kensington, MD; and 3 nieces. Besides his parents, Andy was predeceased by 2 sons, James Scott, and Stuart Scott; and a nephew, Ricky Beuttenmuller. Andy also lost his faithful companion, Virgil last August. A time of remembrance and sharing will be held Tuesday, February 9, 2010 from 5PM to 9PM at the St. John’s Episcopal Church, 7 Whittlesey Ave., New Milford, CT where refreshments will also be served. Interment will take place at a later date in June in the New Milford Cemetery. NEWPORT – Allen L. Patterson
....show , age 75, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. He was born October 2, 1934 in St. Albans the son of the late Safford & Florence (Blake) Patterson. Allen was a resident of Newport for the past 34 years and a former resident of Richford and Sheldon. He was employed at the Richford Grain Co. and Blue Seal Feeds starting in 1959. Then in 1970 he purchased and operated the Corner Store in Richford and then in 1972 he purchased the Sunoco Station in Richford which he operated for one year. In 1976 he worked for 3 years as a service manager at Hayes Ford in Newport. From 1984 to 1987 he worked for the Portsmouth Paper Company. He finally drove cars for area dealers until his retirement. Allen was a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 58 of No. Troy, and the Masonic Lodge # 9 of Richford. He also served as a selectman for the Town of Richford in the early 1970’s and was a member of the Richford Fire Dept. during that time. Allen was an avid baseball fan and especially enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox. He is survived by his daughter, Sheila Wilson and her companion Paul Michel of Enosburg Falls; his sons, Jeffrey Patterson and his wife Janet of Denver, CO, and Larry Patterson and his wife Rene of Montgomery Center; his grandchildren and their families, Tracie (Wilson) Leicher and her husband Aaron of Centreville, VA, Travis Wilson his companion Bridget Dunton and their children, Hayley & Aleigha of Franklin, Rachael Hardy her husband Larrs and their son Rohan, Isaiah Patterson, and Lisa Patterson all of Montgomery Center; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Laurette Cookson and Richard Chase both of Newport; and Dot’s family, Bob & Janet Smith of Concord, VT, Walter & Laurie Smith of Danville, VT, Candy & Larry Smith of Calais, VT, Bobby & Lisa Smith of North Carolina, and Tim & Patty Smith of St. Johnsbury, VT. ....show , age 80, passed away Monday, February 8, 2010 at at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. She was born December 2, 1929 in Suffolk, VA the daughter of the late Paul A. & Dorothy E. (Hackett) Stokes. Virginia has been a resident of East Highgate since 1978 and was a former resident of Alburgh and Barnes Corners, NY where she lived on the family farm. She was very active in the Episcopal Church having played the organ and taught Sunday school at various parishes and more recently she was a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Enosburg Falls. Her life centered around raising her children and her grandchildren. While raising her family she attended college receiving her associate’s degree. She served as librarian at the Alburgh Elementary School and Highgate Elementary School. She was a para educator at the Franklin Elementary School as well as taking part in the Foster Grandparent Program. She finally worked as a para educator at M.V.U. in Swanton until she suffered a stroke in 2003 causing her to retire. Virginia was an accomplished pianist and played the harpsichord. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and making braided rugs. When she was younger she was an avid water skier and enjoyed snowmobiling and swimming. She is survived by her children, Hollister “Holly” Mattraw and his wife Karen Kimball of Machias, ME, Beth Lagraff and her husband Steve of Natural Bridge, NY, Faith Mattraw of Burlington, Truman Lee of St. Albans, Karen Lee and her companion Peter Laroche of Franklin, and William Lee and his wife Kelley of Fairfield; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; her siblings, Myron “Peter” Bullard and his wife Kathleen of Saranac, NY, James Bullard and his wife Diane of West Stockholm, NY, and Deborah Choiniere and her husband Gerald of Highgate; several nieces and nephews; Besides her parents, Virginia was predeceased by a granddaughter, Ellen May Mattraw; and siblings, Eric Bullard, Beverly Stokes and Bruce Stokes. ....show , passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington with her loving family at her side. She was born January 30, 1927 in St. Albans, VT the daughter of the late Gilbert & Ida (Fountain) Grassette. She was predeceased by her husband, S. Thomas Harvey on March 7, 2005, as well as a brother, Gilbert A. Grassette, Jr., on September 3, 2000. Anita graduated from Enosburgh Falls High School and Burlington Business College. She was employed by Farmer's Home Administration for over 35 years in Enosburgh and St. Albans, before moving to Bennington in 1978. After retiring from the USDA, she spent many years as a volunteer at the Bennington Museum. Anita and her late husband Tom traveled frequently with other museum members and also as members of the 251 Club. They took great pride in having visited all of the towns in Vermont. Anita was extremely proud of her grandchildren and their accomplishments. She encouraged them to do well in all their undertakings and taught life lessons that will be long remembered. As well, she loved dogs, and for many years there was a faithful companion at her side. She leaves behind a daughter, Anne Grassette-Harvey, of Enosburgh Falls, a grandson, Andrew Bingham of Altadena, CA, 3 granddaughters, Linley Bingham of Rome, NY, and Krista and Caitlin Bingham, also of Enosburgh Falls, a sister and brother-in-law, Judith and John Marcy, of Coolidge, AZ, and a dear friend, Madine Simpson, of Shelburne. ....show , age 83, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday morning February 14, 2010 surrounded by her family. She was born November 30, 1926 in Frelighsburg, Quebec Canada the daughter of the late Joseph & Glenna (Longley) Benoit. Marjorie’s life in farming started at an early age. She worked in the fields alongside her father as a child and with her husband after she was married. Marjorie married Lorne Louis Dunlavey on June 15, 1945. Marjorie and Lorne began their farming career in West Shefford, Quebec in 1948 where they resided until 1963, when they moved to Richford and purchased the Pinnacle View Farm and continued to reside there after retiring from farming in 1989. She especially enjoyed working with the heavy equipment, and took great pride in mowing her lawn. Lorne preceded Marjorie to our Lord on March 23, 2001. Early on in their marriage, Marjorie and Lorne had the opportunity to travel, visiting France, Spain & Morocco. She enjoyed playing BINGO and was an avid card player, especially fond of the games played around the dining room table with her family. She also had many memories of bartending with Annie Lavallee at Roger’s Grill. Marjorie leaves behind 5 children and their spouses, Diane & James Galfetti of Barre, Dennis & Irene Dunlavey of Sheldon, Linda & Thomas Marrs of Oak Harbor, WA, Louis & Debbie Dunlavey of Ocala, FL, and Rick Dunlavey and his fiancé, Hellen Bard of Craftsbury; her grandchildren, Lorna Meunier and her husband Jay, Jennifer DiNatali and her husband Mark, Michelle Wakerly and her husband Lee, Kristine Chatterton and her husband Stephen, Joe Dunlavey, T.J. He was born January 9, 1928 in Westfield, VT the son of the late Harry & Mae (Ducharme) Snider. He grew up in Westfield and attended Graded School in Westfield and Lowell. Edward was a longtime resident of Richford and since 2000 made his home with his daughter in Sheldon. His working career started with his brother, Ernest, logging and operating heavy equipment. He was a bulldozer operator for LaPerle Construction and Wrights Construction and finally worked on the highway dept. for the Town of Richford retiring in 1996. He was a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean War. Edward was a communicant of All Saints Catholic Church in Richford. He enjoyed hunting and playing cards and for a period of time spent winters working in Florida. He is survived by his children Joyce Hunt and her husband Ray of Sheldon, Norman Snider and his significant other, Nancy West of Sheldon, and Gary Snider of Richford; his grandchildren and great grandchildren, Chad Snider his wife Tracy and their children, Ryan & Hayley of Richford, Christie Snider her friend Shawn Hogaboom and her children, Logan & Gage of Richford; and Michelle’s children, Breanna Paquette & Bailey Brunelle; a sister, Marguerite Warner and her husband Alvin of Lowell; sisters-in-law, Betsy Snider of Montgomery, Theresa B. RICHFORD – Frederick Newton Lovelette
....show , age 89, passed away Thursday morning February 18, 2010 in the care of his family and the special caregivers at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford. He was born in Richford on November 20, 1920 the son of Marshall & Susan (Thompson) Lovelette. Fred was one of six children. He graduated from Richford High School in 1938. He married Barbara Stanhope on September 2, 1946 and they celebrated 60 years of marriage. Barbara predeceased Fred on October 28, 2006. Shortly after high school Fred joined the U.S. Navy and then was transferred to the Merchant Marines in 1943 and became a steam engineer at sea. In 1945 Fred was inducted back into the Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor. Once again he was honorably discharged as a Seaman Second Class in August 1946. Fred was a devoted life member of the American Legion Post # 12 of Richford where he held several positions including Commander and Vice Commander. Fred’s work was everything to him. During his life, Fred worked at a number of local jobs including Fonda Container as a machine operator. He then was trained as a machinist at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, VT where he worked from 1965 until he retired in 1982. During that time he stayed in Springfield, MA during the week and drove home to Vermont and his family on the weekends. After retiring from Pratt & Whitney, Fred returned to Vermont and continued to work several different jobs including being the boiler operator at Sweat Comings Furniture Co. until the factory closed at which point Fred finally ended his work career. Fred loved to fish, play cribbage and dance with his lovely wife. He also enjoyed high performance cars and especially having fun in life. Fred is survived by his children, Michael Lovelette and his wife Mary of Brandon; Bruce Lovelette and his wife Pamela of Berkshire, and Patricia Broe and her husband Brian “Pete” of Richford; his grandchildren, Stephanie Lovelette, Jennifer Lovelette, Christopher Lovelette, Heather (Broe) Bapp and her husband Chad, and Jessica Broe; 2 great grandchildren, beloved Chelsea Byrne with whom Fred a very special relationship with, and Jaylynn Bapp; his brother, Neil “Buddy” Lovelette and his companion Gloria Spencer of Stanhope, NJ; sisters, Lillian Beth Wilde of Essex, and Mary Jane Adley of Newtown, PA; and sisters-in-law, Ruth Lovelette of Swanton, and Kathleen Lovelette of Yarmouth, MA; several nieces and nephews. He was born January 4, 1948 in Fairfield Center the son of the late Bernard M. & Juanita (Mayo) Johnson. David worked as a farmer most of his life and truly loved working with cows. He began farming for Rosaire St. Pierre in Berkshire. He then worked at the Lucille Farms Cheese Plant in Swanton for 9 years and then worked security at Wyeth in Georgia for a short period. He went back to farming for Gavin Ryan in Fairfield having to retire on March 13, 2009 due to failing health. He enjoyed dancing, bowling and camping and most of all loved spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife, Priscilla M. “Tiny” (Glidden) Johnson and their daughter Jenna both of Richford; his children, Nathan C. Johnson and his wife Michelle of Enosburg, Amanda S. Griswold, He enjoyed music and for many years played bass guitar for many bands including, Conrad Samuels Band, and the Keegan Nolan Band. Through the years, Maurice played many benefits to help those in need. He also enjoyed the time spent on the farm with his special friend, Pete Soule. His many enjoyments included logging, truck driving, ice fishing with Lester Derry, and car racing. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. He began his working career with the railroad, he then worked for the Highway Department for the Town of Highgate, and finally worked for O.C.McCuin’s in Highgate where he drove truck and worked in their garage, retiring in 1974. He enjoyed traveling, shopping, fishing, hunting, watching his birds going to county fairs, tinkering on all kinds of things and watching NASCAR with his favorite driver being Ryan Newman. Most of all he loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Joyce (Machia) Bosley of Richford. They were married on September 29, 1979. ....show , age 86, widow of the Rev. Hvezdon Kafka, died peacefully on Sunday evening, February 28, 2010 at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford. She was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia on November 28, 1923 the daughter of the late Bohuslav & Marta (Sykorova) Martinec. Vera lived through the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia and was reared to take over the family business. She instead followed her heart and love, leaving her homeland to emigrate to the U.S.A. with her husband in 1945. Vera & Hvezdon embodied the American Dream, coming to this country with just their suitcases, with hard work and a frugal lifestyle they were able to put their sons through college. She worked for many years as the manager of the school lunch program for the Town of Stow (MA), and previously was the manager for a women’s clothing store, ran the ladies section in a department store, and way back was the nanny to the family of Dr. Edward Teller (father of the A-bomb). She deftly managed the responsibilities of being a mother, a minister’s wife, and a wage earner. She was an active member of the First Parish Church of Stow & Acton. She retired in 1986 at the age of 65, and enjoyed winters in Florida and traveling the world. She also learned to play golf and enjoyed playing bridge, knitting, sewing and needlepoint. Vera did not like to dwell on the negative side of life, preferring to focus on helping people get along and be happy. FRANKLIN – Esther Katherine Jewett
....show , age 88, widow of Arnold L. Jewett, passed away Saturday morning, March 6, 2010 at the St. Albans Health Care & Rehab Facility in St. Albans. She was born November 7, 1921 in Fairfax the daughter of the late, Oliver & Josephine (Thibault) Cross. Esther led a very fulfilling life. She met Arnold and they were married on August 27, 1942. They started their family in 1945 when their daughter was born. In 1949 their first son was born, then in 1952, they were blessed with another son, their life was complete. Most of their lives, Esther & Arnold operated a dairy farm, which as any farmer knows, your work doesn’t end when the sun goes down and she was always there to give Arnold a hand. First and foremost Esther’s family was her whole world, and her pride and joy. Her life revolved around her husband, three children and grandchildren. Whenever there was a break between the farming chores, Esther would pack a picnic lunch and her and Arnold would play hooky and go fishing. Fishing was an interest they both shared. Esther also enjoyed gardening and preserving the vegetables for winter. She also enjoyed working in her beautiful flower gardens when time allowed. After retiring, she still enjoyed her flower gardens and feeding and watching the birds. Esther never learned to drive a car, so at grocery shopping time and other times away from the farm it was done together with her husband. Esther’s entire life changed drastically on November 29, 1996 when her husband passed away. If it hadn’t been for her devotion to her children, she might have given up, but instead Esther continued caring, and always being there for her children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors. She is survived by her daughter, Darlene Fowler of Sheldon; 2 sons and their wives, Richard & Beverly Jewett of Highgate Ctr., & James & Nancy Jewett of Franklin; 6 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandson; 1 sister, Ethel Messier of East Fairfield; 2 sisters-in-law, Gladys Cross of Swanton and Rose Cross of Milton; several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Andrew Dulude of Bakersfield. Besides her parents and husband, Esther was predeceased by a grandson, Mark Greenwood on June 6, 2007; a great grandson, Zachary Smith on September 27, 1997; a son-in-law, Thomas Fowler on March 8, 2003; her siblings, Ina McKinney, Walter Cross, Oliver Cross Jr., Evelyn LaBelle, Alma King, Eugene Cross, and Ectuce Cross. She was born January 26, 1952 in St. Albans, VT the daughter of the late Harvey & Catherine (Martin) Blow. Joyce was a lifelong resident of the area and was a member of the Georgia Plains Baptist Church where she had served as the auditor of the church and volunteered for many church events. She had been working at the Fairfax School Cafeteria for the Underwood Catering Group until recently, when illness forced her to stop. Joyce enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. She loved anything to do with dolphins and also loved all of the kids at the Fairfax School. She was born September 20, 1928 in St. Albans the daughter of the late Fay F. & Gladys (Mercy) Duffy. On October 24, 1956 she married George Bryce Sr., her best friend and love of her life. Margaret was a longtime resident of Enosburg Falls and was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Ladies of St. Ann. For a brief period she worked as a para-educator at the Enosburg Falls Elementary School. Most importantly she was a stay at home Mom who loved to cook not only for her family but the many kids in the neighborhood too. She is survived by her children, George Bryce Jr. and his companion Diana Langle of Sheldon, Marlene Bryce Callan of Fairfield, Thomas Bryce and his wife Trudy of Enosburg Falls, Laurie Longe and her husband Charles of Sheldon, Edward Bryce and his wife Brenda of Enosburg Falls, and Edmund Bryce and his companion Peggy Lontine of Enosburg Falls; a son-in-law, James Laden and his wife Fannie of Fairfield; 19 grandchildren; 9 Great grandchildren; a brother, Thomas Duffy of Laguna Woods, CA. ....show , 96, passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, VT Raymond was born on February 16, 1914 in Montgomery, VT, the son of Homer and Mabel (Domina) Baker. Raymond’s mother died when he was four and he was raised by his grandparents, Charles and Hattie Domina of Montgomery. Raymond worked for the American Coin Lock Co. for several years prior to his retirement in the sixties. He was proud to have been a welder on the battleships in Bath, Maine during the war. Raymond enjoyed fishing, hunting, baseball and playing cards on weekends. Raymond married Hildreth Miner in 1940. She predeceased him on September 17, 2002. Surviving are his son Charles and his wife Hallie of Nashua, NH; his daughter Connie and her husband Alan Mullen of Georgia, VT; four grandchildren Charles McAllister, Eric Baker, Steven Mullen and Linda LaPierre; ten great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. Raymond was predeceased by his granddaughter Kimberly in 2004, four brothers and three sisters. Interment will take place in the spring at the convenience of the family. Edward was born August 29, 1933 in Sweetsburg, Quebec the son of the late Edward A. and Bernice (Goodhue) Benoit. He is survived by a daughter Dawn Titus and her husband Patrick of Crown Point, NY and their children Caelin and Marissa; a son Cary Benoit and his wife Bridgette of Frederick, MD and their children Kara and Taylor; a brother Robert Benoit of Mashpee, MA; and his long time friend Wilma Cleveland of Cowansville, Quebec. Edward was veteran of the United States Navy and received an honorable discharge in June of 1960. Roger worked for Richard Greenwood as a logger and then with his brother “Becky” at Eden Auto Body before he started Deuso Auto Service in 1995. He enjoyed watching NASCAR racing, with his favorite driver being Kyle Busch. He liked working in his flower gardens. Roger enjoyed entertaining his family and close friends, and loved to make them laugh. He also enjoyed playing games such as Yahtzee, Solitaire, and UNO. She was born May 12, 1921 in Montgomery Center the daughter of the late Rawson & Ethel (Smith) Simmons. Fern was a resident of Enosburg Falls most of her life and was a 1938 graduate of Enosburg Falls High School. She was an associate member of the Montgomery Center Community Baptist Church. She was also a longtime member of the Enosburgh Center Memorial Congregational Church. More recently she attended the Richford Baptist Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Martha Washington Chapter, Franklin County Republican Committee, Enosburgh Center Cemetery Association, Ladies Cribbage League at the American Legion, and the former L.V.I.S in Enosburg Falls. She had served as Auditor for the Village of Enosburg Falls, Town of Enosburgh, and the Enosburg Falls School District. Fern will be remembered as being a wonderful cook, a talent that she enjoyed passing down to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed playing cards, knitting, listening to religious music, watching the afternoon soaps on TV, playing piano and doing puzzles. She is survived by her children, Stephen J. Perley and his wife Carolyn of Enosburgh, Peter Perley and his companion Roberta Morin of Enosburg Falls, and Marilyn “Sue” Pearce and her husband Albert “Chuck” of Richford; her grandchildren, Deborah Cook and her husband Thomas, Stephen J. (Gallup) Goodrich. Helen attended school in Berkshire Center, Richford High School and Johnson State Teachers College. She worked for the University of Vermont Extension Service for 22 years retiring in 1994. She was a member of the American Legion Post # 12 Auxiliary. Helen had the opportunity to travel and visit many places including, Maine, England, Texas, Germany, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Florida, New York City and Bermuda. She enjoyed camping, reading, shopping, gambling, watching survivor and most importantly, spending time with her family. She is survived by her husband, Peder Pedersen of Richford. Helen & Pete were married on October 20, 1973. Ferne had resided for 30 + years in Sheldon prior to moving to Enosburg Falls. She was born in Montgomery on April 7, 1922 the daughter of the late Homer & Dorothy (Longe) Baker. Ferne was employed at Union Carbide for 26 years, retiring in 1981. She was a former member of the Sheldon United Methodist Church. Ferne will be remembered for her many talents from tap dancing, playing the harmonica, writing poetry and a variety of crafts, but she will mostly be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor. Surviving are her daughter and her husband, Susan & Thomas Sawyer of Fletcher; two grandchildren and their partners Tom Sawyer and Ellen Bethea and BillieSue Sawyer and Lonnie McAdoo; two great grandchildren Mason and Sirena Sawyer; her brother and his wife Billy and Debby Baker and a daughter-in-law and her husband Sharron and Lee West. ....show , age 93, passed away early Sunday morning, March 28, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in St. Albans on March 28, 1917, to John A. & Gertrude (McBride) Gale. He led a long and active life, enjoying the outdoors through hunting, fishing, skiing, golfing and snowmobiling and owned a camp on Lake Carmi where he spent many summers with his family. He was a life-long resident of Sheldon, a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and was employed at the paper mill located in Sheldon Springs for 50 years, retiring in 1985. Following his retirement he enjoyed a daily game of golf in the summer and frequent snowmobile rides in the winter, enjoying his last ride earlier this month. He also spent time traveling with his wife and family. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 and was assigned to the field artillery during World War II, stationed in Africa and Europe. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 88 of Sheldon. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Theresa (Kane) Gale of Sheldon Springs; his four children and their families, Deborah Kelly of Georgia and her son, James; John Gale his wife RayLee of Wauseon, OH and their children, Craig Borin his wife Danielle and their daughter Hailey, Miranda and her son Nehemiah, John R. and Jenna; Norman Gale of Sheldon; Barbara Gatti her husband James of Waterbury Center and their children, Michael his wife Olivia and their daughters Beatrice and Josephine, and Gemma Gatti and her fiancé Rick Phillips. RICHFORD – Janice Carol (Whims) Simmons
....show , age 62, passed away Wednesday morning March 31, 2010 at the Vermont Respite House in Williston with her loving family at her side. She was born in Montreal, Quebec Canada on September 14, 1947, the daughter of the late William George & Bernice (Jordan) Whims. Janice was raised in Montreal and moved to Richford in 1984. She was employed at CNCP Railroad from 1965 to 1987 as a telecommunications operator. In 1987 she started working for Vermont Creative Software Company in Richford and after a period of time working there she purchased the company and continued to operate it during her illness. Janice enjoyed traveling, especially overseas, having visited, Europe and Africa. She also went on many cruises visiting several islands. Most important to Janice was her family. They will remember her as a very compassionate person and an excellent cook. She is survived by her husband, Robert Simmons of Richford. They were married on April 12, 1984. ....show , age 92, passed away Wednesday April 7, 2010 at the Franklin County Rehab Center in St. Albans. She was born June 5, 1917 in Boston, MA the daughter of the late John & Otillia (Klesterof) Grundman. She graduated from Ashland High School, Ashland, MA class of 1935. She was also a graduate of Fisher Junior College. For 13 years Martha was the personal secretary of Dr. Woods, the director of McLean Hospital in Waverly, MA. Martha married Stewart R. Stoney on November 26, 1949 in Watertown, MA. He preceded her on November 25, 2006, three hours before their 57th wedding anniversary. Shortly after Sewart’s passing, Martha moved to Vermont making her home with her daughter and her family. Martha had a passion for color paper, fabric, and glue. She was the happiest when she was in the middle of a project. Martha’s talents were from the simplest arts and crafts to gold leaf design, millinery fashion, using her mother’s wringer washer to make Christmas cards, and most forms of sewing. A 1970’s evening course at Brockton High lead to 40 years of the “Flower Friends”. While living in Vermont she attended Care Partners where she continued her love of crafts. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church, the Brockton Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, and a life member of Alpha Iota Sorority. Martha is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol & Vincent Hickey of West Berkshire; her grandchildren, Jonathan, Allison and Lauren Hickey; a sister-in-law, J. May Stoney of North Hampton, NH; a niece and several nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Walea Cepurneek. Montgomery VT – Pearl E. Tryhorne
....show , age 95, passed away on Sunday morning, April 11, 2010 at Franklin County Rehab in St. Albans with her children at her side. Pearl was born on April10, 1915 in Montgomery, the daughter of Francis and Eva (Rowse) Pudvah. She was a resident of Montgomery most of her life. Pearl was a member of the Montgomery Methodist Church and served on the board of trustees as well as always being an important part of any food committee. In 1937, Pearl married Douglas Tryhorne and, shortly thereafter, moved to Springfield, VT where they worked in foundries, supporting the war effort. After Doug returned from the war, they purchased a farm in Montgomery with Jay Peak in the back yard and a panorama of beauty. Pearl was a full time, hard working hill farmer while Doug worked in the asbestos mines. She enjoyed many years of skiing with family and she also was a cook at Jay peak Ski Area. Pearl’s super cooking ability was showcased when she owned the Ideal Restaurant in Enosburg. Her greatest pleasure was spending time with her growing family. Surviving are Pearl’s daughter, F. Joy Bosley of Montgomery and her special friend Charles Paquette of St. Albans Bay; her son, David Tryhorne and his wife Sally of Enosburg; grandchildren, Jonathan and Sabine Likhite - Bosley of Waterville, Jolene O’Connell of Richford, Matt and Mary Tryhorne of Montgomery, Julie Tryhorne and her companion Ernest Hart of Huntington; 3 great grandchildren, Anara Likhite - Bosley, Cooper O’Connell and Colin Hart; brothers-in-law and their wives, Ronald and Marion Shover of Worcester and George and Donna Shover of Enosburg; a special cousin Henry Rowse of Montgomery and several nieces and nephews. ....show , 84, passed away Sunday April 11, 2010 quietly after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s / Dementia. She is now at peace with those loved ones who have gone before her. She was born August 12, 1925, the daughter of Dr. Frank James Lawliss and Lillian (Parmalee) Lawliss. Frances attended and graduated from Richford High School and the University of Vermont (1946). Many will remember Frances (Mrs. Clark) for her many years as an educator. She started her teaching career at Berkshire Elementary and switched to Richford High School shortly after. She taught at Richford for forty two years. For several of those years she was also assistant principal. For a long time you couldn’t graduate from Richford without getting through one of her English classes. She had a deep concern for all students and made a special effort to help them complete their studies and graduate. She chaperoned many basketball games and school functions. Frances had a special way with even the toughest of the students. Well into her seventies she tutored those needing some extra help. Frances never stopped teaching. In her earlier years she loved driving to Burlington for shopping and a meal and the more that rode along the merrier. Whether it was a trip throughout New England looking at historical sights or a station wagon loaded with family and friends heading to a UVM hockey game, Frances (mom) will be remembered as a great planner and organizer of family outings and events. Family members will also remember her enjoyment of the too numerous to name dogs, cats and tropical fish that were part of the family. Also remembered will be the sounds of the piano as Frances would often sit down and play in the late afternoon. Frances met the love of her life and married Homer William “Bud” Clark on June 18, 1947 in Richford. Together they shared 61 years enjoying their five children and twelve grandchildren. Frances is survived by her daughter Wendy and her husband Dan of Wilmington, Ohio; Four sons, Jerry and his wife Gina of St. Albans Bay, Brian of Richford, Frank and his wife Jeannie of Richford, Joel and his wife Christine of Swanton. 12 Grandchildren, Atlee of St. Petersburg, FL, Eric and Jenny of Tolland, CT, Christian of Orlando, FL, Jaxon and Gretchen of Franklin, KY, Toby of White House, TN, Koby, Hunter of Richford, Zachary, Chelsea, Noah, Jerad & Jordan of Swanton; 7 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister Peggy Mullen and her husband Norman. Frances was predeceased by her parents Frank and Lillian Lawliss; her husband Homer “Bud” Clark; her sister Joanne-Marie; and her brother Charles. Reuben was a 1970 graduate of Enosburg Falls High School. He was a member of St. Isidores Catholic Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on the farm. Most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren. Loretta was born on December 3, 1922 in Montgomery, the daughter of the late Fred “Pete” Lumbra and Ethel (Kennett) Lumbra. She was married to Lloyd Lumbra on September 3, 1946 in Richford and to Vernon “Buddy” Record on May 5, 1961 in Berkshire. Loretta was born and raised in Montgomery and attended the Montgomery schools. When she married Buddy, they moved to Berkshire where she resided for over 40 years. Loretta had made her home in Colchester with her daughter for the last seven years. Loretta was a homemaker who devoted her life to raising her family. She especially enjoyed family gatherings and parties and was interested in Bozo’s farm and Norma’s flower gardens. She also enjoyed shopping, playing cards, yard sales, going out to eat, especially for breakfast, and sitting on the porch in the summertime. As a cook, Loretta made the best homemade beans. Loretta is survived by her daughter, Norma Juaire and her husband Duane of Colchester, her son, Lloyd “Bozo” Lumbra and his wife Diane of Berkshire, four step-sons, John Record of Rutland, David Record and his wife Tina of Richford, James Record and his wife Peggy of Berkshire and Thomas Record and his wife Susan of Cornwall. Loretta is also survived by her grandchildren, Stephanie Juaire of Burlington, Aaron Juaire and his wife Debbie of Jeffersonville, Bradley Lumbra and his wife Kara of Berkshire and Leanne Blanchard and her husband Seth of Georgia, Christopher Record of Denton, TX, Danielle Record of Essex, Ashley Record of Colchester, Angela Carpenter and her husband Rene of Bristol, Kristin Tracy and her husband Christopher of Richford and Jennifer Lavigne of Cornwall. Loretta is also survived by eleven great grandchildren with another due in June; a sister-in-law, Muriel Record Toczko of Wallingford, CT; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Bertha Lamore of Bakersfield; and her cat, Missy. Loretta was predeceased by her husband, Buddy, on July 12, 1979; a daughter-in-law Lorraine Record on June 23, 2008; four half-brothers Clarence, Hardy, Ulric and Joseph “Cat” Lumbra; and four half-sisters, Louise Tevyaw, Virginia Gonyea, Florence Tatro and Jessie Blair. He was born January 15, 1935 in Enosburgh, the son of the late Winfield & Florence (Hull) Berry. Roger was a lifelong resident of Enosburgh. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the American Legion Post # 42 of Enosburg. He worked for McDermott’s Trucking in Enosburg for many years as a mechanic & truck driver. He then worked for Pizzagalli Construction for 12 years retiring in 1997. He enjoyed playing cribbage and was a member of the American Legion cribbage league for the past 40 years. He also enjoyed gambling, traveling, hunting, fishing, four wheeling, sugaring and listening to country music. He especially loved to spend time visiting with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife Molly (Button) Berry of Enosburgh. They were married December 8, 1962. He is also survived by his children, Roger Berry Jr. and his wife Tara of Woodstock, Rocky Berry and his wife Jewels of Sheldon, and Theresa Duprey and her husband Scott of Sheldon Springs; 3 grandchildren, Jason Berry and his wife Maegan, Michael Berry, and Samantha Berry; several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law. She married William D. Hurlbut on January 27, 1953. He predeceased her on September 3, 1986. She had made her home at the Ave Maria Community Care Home in Richford since February and prior to that she made her home with her daughter in Swanton for 8 years. Phyllis was a housewife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed gardening and freezing the vegetables she grew, going to yard sales, listening to country music especially Merle Haggard, and most of all she loved the time she spent with her grandchildren. She is survived by; her daughters, Janette Hoague of Swanton, Collen Mills and her lifelong companion Bill Russell of Enosburg Falls, and Billie Harrness and her fiancé Kirt Westcom of East Fairfield; her grandchildren, Shane, Raven, Jamie, Tasney, Tiffany, Brittany, Randi, Ricky Jr., and Brooke; 7 great grandchildren; her siblings, Lenora Murray of Quebec, Marlene Johnson and her husband Richard of Connecticut, Bobby Poirier and his wife Anne of Ontario, and Billy Poirier and his partner Liz of Quebec; several nieces and nephews; and her cat & best friend, Buddy. ....show ,73, a resident of Intervale Ave. in Richford, passed away on April 26, 2010 at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford. Marjorie was born on March 8, 1937 in Richford, the daughter of Raymond and Bertha (Fletcher) Hoben. She was a 1955 graduate of Richford High School. Marjorie had resided in New York City for a time where she worked as a stenographer for a legal firm , secretary to the President of an import/export company, receptionist and model for a furrier, a receptionist/assistant to a subsidiary of Time-Life, for Mobil Oil, the New York Times, Proctor & Gamble and the American Can Company. Back in Vermont, she had a dog kennel for 12 years and, also, worked at the Richford Health Center. Marjorie enjoyed reading and ballroom and Latin American dance. She was a breeder of Affenpinschers (toy dogs) and showed them in the US and Canada. In 1976, she was awarded the top winning award for her Affenpischer “Kelso”. Surviving are Marjorie’s brother Earl L. Hoben of St. Albans, a sister- in- law, Gloria Hoben; 2 nephews, James Hoben of Waterbury snd Jerry Hoben of Framingham, MA; her soul mate Osmin Montjovier of New York City; a cousin, whom she considered a “kid sister”, Debbie MacAuley of Naugatuck, CT; neighbor and friend, Donna Marsten, who shopped for her , cooked for her and cared for her during the months she was unable to care for herself; and a very special friend, Shirley Fletcher, with whom she resided for a while. She was at Marjorie’s side right up until her death. Shirley was a great comfort to Marjorie during her illness, and held a special place in Marjorie’s heart. Both strong willed women, they had a unique friendship and had total respect to each other. In addition to her parents, Marjorie was predeceased by a brother Robert in 2002, her aunt Irene Baker and several cousins. For the past few years she had made her home at the Holiday House in St. Albans. She is survived by her brother, Clinton Levis of Sheldon. Besides her parents, Ida was predeceased by her sisters, Hilda Levis, Helen Levis, Hallie (Levis) Grant, and Beverly Levis; and her brothers, Raymond Levis, Ralph “Bub” Levis, and Carmi “Sonny” Levis, Jr.; and her brother-in-law, Ralph Grant. ....show , 80, a resident of School Street in Enosburg Falls, passed away on Sunday afternoon, May 2, 2010 at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. Alton was born on May 31, 1929 in St. Albans, the son of Owen and Imogene (Roddy) Collins. He served with the US Army during the Korean Conflict. In his earlier years, Alton resided in East Fairfield where he had served as Town Constable and Chief of the East Fairfield Fire Department. Alton worked for the State of Vermont Highway Dept. for 30 years and, earlier, for Wright’s Dairy in Enosburg. A sports fan, he coached and served as an umpire, was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed hunting and bowling. He especially enjoyed and was proud of his sugarmaking. Alton was a communicant of St. Anthony/St. George’s Parish where he was very active in church affairs. He was also a member of American Legion Post # 42 in Enosburg. She was born October 15, 1910 in Enosburgh the daughter of Henry & Mary (McGrail) Sylvester. Hazel was a lifelong resident of Montgomery and a member of St. Isidores Catholic Church. She graduated from Enosburg Falls High School in 1928. On June 1, 1937 she married Joseph E. Clokey. He predeceased her on August 14, 1984. Hazel worked as a seamstress at the sewing factories in Richford and Enosburg Falls. She was also a teacher’s assistant at the Montgomery Village School, a telephone operator, a clerk at the Montgomery Village Post Office and ran several business’s out of her home such as donut making. She also loved to do beautiful embroidery to give to family and friends. She is survived by her daughters-in-law, Alberta Clokey of Fairfax, and Carol Clokey of Montgomery; her grandchildren and their spouses, Steve & Robin Clokey of Jericho and their children Rachel, Ethan & Kira, Jeff & Kelly Clokey of Fairfax and their children Justin, Tyler, Noah & Miles, Stacy & Willie Maynard of Bakersfield and their son Caleb, and Pam & Rick Brooks of Randallstown, MD and their children Keishya, Kalisha, Eric, Makenna & Katie; many nieces and nephews. ....show , age 89, wife of Bruno Pothier, passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at her home with her loving family at her side. She was born September 27, 1920 in St. Norbert Arthabaska, Quebec Canada, the daughter of the late Camille & Emma “Sara” Savoie. Therese was born and raised in Quebec. She married Bruno Pothier on June 12, 1954 and they moved to Vermont in 1955 where they raised their family. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Therese was a loving and caring wife, mother & grandmother who provided a wonderful home for her family. She was an excellent cook, loved to entertain and most of all loved to spend time with her family. She is survived by her husband, Bruno Pothier of Enosburg Falls; her children, Real Pothier and his partner Gary Bergeron of Richmond, Benoit Pothier and his wife Rita (Breault) of Enosburg Falls, Chantal Pothier and her husband Marty Lumbra of Montgomery Center, Josee Pothier and her partner Debbie Fisher of Franklin, and Carole (Pothier) Volaric and her husband Vasko of Sterling, VA; her grandchildren, Journey Snoke, Joseph Snoke, Danielle Pothier, Samantha Pothier, Martin Volaric and Michael Volaric; her brothers, and their wives, Guy & Jeanne d’Arc Savoie of Victoriaville, Quebec, and Gabriel & Reina Savoie of St. Norbert Arthabaska Quebec; and 75 nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Therese was predeceased by her siblings, Wilfred Savoie, Cecile “Cecilia” (Savoie) Lambert, Geraldine (Savoie) Poisson, Joseph Savoie, and Yvon Savoie. The Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 2:00 PM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Enosburg Falls. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery. Friends and relatives will gather at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls on Saturday prior to the Mass from 12:00 PM until 1:30 PM. ....show , age 98, passed away Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford. She was born March 18, 1912 in South Burlington the daughter of the late James & Clara (Edwin) DeGraff. She is survived by her son, Richard Wilbert and his wife Joann of Burlington; her grandchildren, Rosemary Irish, Ricky Wilbert, and Dennis Wilbert; her great grandchildren, Jessie & Matt Wilbert. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her 2nd husband, Philip Burleson; 2 sons, Archie Wilbert & Steven Burleson; and her sister, Evelyn Poirier. In keeping with Florence’s wishes there will be no funeral services or visiting hours.
MONTGOMERY CENTER – Ronald Walter Lumbra
....show , age 87, passed away unexpectedly, Thursday May 13, 2010 at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. He was born October 26, 1922 in Montgomery the son of the late Walter & Matilda (Donna) Lumbra. He attended school in Montgomery. In 1944 he entered the U.S. Army serving in Europe and fought in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII, receiving his honorable discharge in 1946. He worked at the Asbestos Mines, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in Connecticut and then returned to Vermont and started the Citgo Station in Montgomery which he operated until he sold it in 1969. He then started an auto parts distribution business which he operated until he retired in 1986. He was a member of St. Isidores Catholic Church and a 65 year member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He loved gardening, watching the Boston Red Sox, and his old Cub Cadet Tractor. He is survived by his wife, Eva (Lortie) Lumbra of Montgomery Center. Ronald & Eva were married on August 8, 1949. He is also survived by his children, Ronnie Lumbra his wife Mitzi and their children, Casi & Evan of Rye, NY, Lori Stewart her husband Ryan and their children, Darian & Samantha of Lyndon, and Gary Lumbra his wife Bobbi Jo and their children, Colby Tanner, Issac, Emily & Natalie of Montgomery Center; his sister, Lorraine Gillis of Montgomery Center; a sister-in-law, Millie Lumbra of Bangor, ME; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brothers, Roy Lumbra and his wife Theresa, Arthur Lumbra and his wife Audrey, Allen Lumbra, Oscar Lumbra and his wife Floris, and Austin Lumbra and his wife Alberta; his sisters, Viola Tanner and her husband Leo, and Martha Ploof and her husband Rolland. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, May 17, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. Isidores Catholic Church in Montgomery Center. Interment will follow in St. Isidores Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 3-6 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. SHELDON – Edward J. Therrien
....show , age 83, passed away at his home on Sunday afternoon May 16, 2010 following a two year struggle with cancer. Ed was born in Fairfield on May 13, 1927 the youngest son of the late Herbert & Lina (Parrott) Therrien. Ed’s life work was farming. In his youth he worked on the family farm in Fairfield and over the years he worked on various farms in the Franklin County area including, Fr. Phillip Branon, Oscar Riley, Stewart Sartwell, George Truax, Stanley Wright, and Carroll Wright. Much of his work including maple sugaring and logging was done using horses. Ed had a special talent for training draft horses which was his lifelong passion. In 1980, Ed started taking his horses to competitions and took great pleasure in the numerous trophies and blue ribbons they were awarded. He traveled throughout New England, New York and other states for competitions and made many friends along the way. A friend said “watching Ed work the horses was like poetry”. Ed also loved square dancing and music. He was a self taught musician learning to play the fiddle, accordion and harmonica. He enjoyed reading, especially novels with a western theme, and taking rides on back country roads. He also loved to coon hunt. He is survived by his beloved longtime companion, Elisabeth “Liz” Erno of Sheldon; Liz’s children, Ernest Erno Jr., of Enosburg, John Erno of Franklin, Thomas Erno and his wife Lori of Highgate, Betty Rivard of Enosburg, and Kathy Kreber and her husband Larry of Northeastham, MA; Liz’a many grandchildren and great grandchildren; his sister, Blanche Jutras of So. Burlington; many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends. Besides his parents, Ed was predeceased by his siblings, Lenora, Agnes, Henrietta, Gerladine, Elwin, Cornelia, Gilbert, Lucille, Dorothy, and Charlotte. In keeping with Ed’s wishes he will be cremated and there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 2:00 PM at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Fairfield Center with Rev. Daniel Jordan officiating.
MONTGOMERY – Aldea M.(St. Cyr) Sylvester
....show , age 90, widow of Allan Sylvester, passed away peacefully at her home with her family on Friday morning May 21, 2010. She was born September 26, 1919 in St. Cyrille, Quebec, the daughter of the late Alphee & Adele (Lessard) St. Cyr. Aldea moved to the United Sates at the age of 9. She married Allan Sylvester in 1940 and had a daughter, Margaret, in 1945 and a son, Paul, in 1951. She worked very hard raising her family and with her husband on a dairy farm as well as sugaring in the spring. Aldea was employed at the Atlas Plywood Plant in Richford during the 1940’s and during the late 1970’s she worked at Montgomery Schoolhouse, Inc. in Montgomery. Aldea enjoyed her family first, then came gardening. She also did knitting and made towels and dish cloths for everyone. She was very proud of her French heritage and spoke French whenever she could. Aldea was a member of St. Isidores Catholic Church in Montgomery Center. She will be missed by many family and loved ones. Surviving are her daughter, Margaret “Maggie” Sylvester and her son, Paul Sylvester, both of Montgomery; her grandchildren and their significant others, Stacy Sylvester and Alan, Nicole Sylvester and Robert, Jill Sylvester and Graton, Paul Sylvester and Kristi, Katelyn Sylvester and Adam Sylvester; her great grandchildren, Lynda and her significant other Derik, Alan, Megan, Hunter, Bethany, Bobby and Gracie and a great great grandson Aydan, all of Montgomery; nieces; nephews and 2 special God-daughters, Rose Johnson and Gisele Gervais. Besides her parents, Aldea was predeceased by her husband, Allan Sylvester on April 7, 1992; her beloved great grandson, Kaleb Sylvester; her brothers, Oliver (Sylvia), Theotime(Ila) and Antonio(Alida) St. Cyr; and her sister, Lydia (St. Cyr) Baker. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, May 24, 2010 at 11:00 Am at St. Isidores Catholic Church in Montgomery Center. Interment will follow in St. Isidores Cemetery in Montgomery Center. Visiting hours will be held Sunday from5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. ENOSBURG FALLS – Elizabeth Ellen “Betty” Poirier
....show , age 85, passed away at her home with her loving family at her side, Saturday afternoon May 22, 2010. She was born July 11, 1924 in Franklin the daughter of the late Daniel P. & Marguerite (Lapan) Mackin. Betty was a resident of Enosburg Falls most of her life, a 1944 graduate of Enosburg Falls High School and the Fanny Allen School of Nursing. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the American Legion Auxiliary Post # 42 of Enosburg Falls. Betty worked as a Registered Nurse at the St. Albans Hospital and Kerbs Memorial Hospital for many years. After retiring from hospital nursing, she continued to use her nursing skills, caring for the very ill or dying as a private duty nurse, and visiting the elderly and shut-ins. She also served as a volunteer for the after funeral meals at St. John the Baptist Parish. Betty loved walking many miles around the village until her illness slowed her down. People who knew her watched out for her when she was out and about, and she very much appreciated their concern. She also enjoyed camping, fishing, playing BINGO with her friends and always looked forward to her appointments at Hair-A-Rangers where she was treated like a member of their family. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed making others laugh with her jokes and little stories. She is survived by her sons, David Poirier of Enosburg Falls, James Poirier and his wife Roxanne of St. Albans; her daughters, Kathleen Whitney and her husband Theodore of Bakersfield, and Ann Gratton and her husband Alphonse of Enosburg Falls; 9 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Shirley Mackin Langmaid of Danby and Anne Mackin of Strattford, CT; a brother –in-law, Edward E. Bourbeau of Manchester, NH; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Betty was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Richard Poirier on January 10, 2005. Betty & Richard were married October 16, 1948. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Harry, Thomas, Anthony, Robert, Wayne & Richard Mackin (Killed in Korea at age 22), Kathleen Mackin Gilbert, and Mary Mackin Dailey Hendershot (Betty’s twin sister). Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Missisquoi St., Enosburg Falls with Rev. ....show , age 85, widow of Edson “Buddy” Mosier, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, May 29, 2010. She was born July 1, 1924 in Berkshire the daughter of the late Elphea & Floreda (Bourgea) Fourier. Eva and her husband Buddy, owned & operated the Berkshire Pub in the 1960’s and the during the 1970’s and early 1980’s owned and operated Mosier’s Nursing Home in Richford, moving to Enosburg Falls in 1983. Eva enjoyed knitting, playing cards, going to lawn sales, animals, and riding motorcycles & truck with Buddy. She is survived by her nieces, nephews, cousins and her special caregivers, Ruby Jones, Rose Paquette, Jamie Rushford, Diane Beauregard & Marta Timm and nieces, Rose Lamoureaux & Roberta Martin. Besides her parents, Eva was predeceased by her husband Edson “Buddy” Mosier on July 28, 1984. In keeping with Eva’s wishes there will no funeral services or visiting hours. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family in the West Berkshire Cemetery.
