She was born in South Ryegate, VT, March 27, 1916, a daughter of John M. and Annie (Stephen) MacKinnon. Madine was a legal secretary for 45 years for the Castello Law Office and later the Bruno Law Office of Woodsville. She also served as Clerk of the Haverhill District Court under Judge Luigi Castello. Madine was a member of the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church in South Ryegate, VT. She was predeceased by her sister, Muriel Davidson. Madine is survived by her long-time friends Debbie and Wayne Bigelow and their daughter Lindsay of North Haverhill, NH along with several cousins and a host of friends. There will be no calling hours. The funeral service will be on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 11 AM, at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH, with Pastor Sue Ellery will officiate. She was a graduate of Taunton High School. Joyce was married to David Nelson and he predeceased her in 2001. Joyce enjoyed country music, dancing, and being involved with her grandchildren. In 1996 she moved from Taunton to New Hampshire and has spent the past three month with her daughter, Denise. She is survived by her children John Donlon and wife Christine of Littleton, NH, David Donlon and wife Peg of Pike, NH, Denise Donlon of Woodsville, Paula Donlon of New Bedford, MA, Joseph Donlon of Lancaster, NH, and Chris Nelson and wife Mari of Woodsville; 27 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; a sister Marsha LaFleur of Taunton; brothers Lawrence Westgate of Middleboro, MA, Roger Westgate of East Taunton, MA, and Steve Westgate and wife Cindy of Middleboro; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. ....show , 82, of Ryegate Road, died on April 14, 2010, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, surrounded by his family. Bill was born in Norwich, VT, on May 21, 1927, to Lloyd R. and Pauline (Moore) Willis. He was a graduate of Woodsville High School, Class of 1945 and married Merlene A. Taylor on November 2, 1951. He worked at the Ryegate Paper Mill until his mid-thirties. After working in Maine and learning the trade, he returned to Wells River and started his own plumbing and heating business while still working for the paper mill. Later, he and Merlene purchased the Birchwood Motel. While an employee at the paper mill, he served as a director in the credit union. Along with vegetable gardening, Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing baseball. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Merlene Willis of Wells River; their two sons, Bob Willis of Jericho, VT and Andy Willis and Deb of Wilder, VT; four grandchildren; a brother, David Willis and wife Sarah of East Barnet, VT; one niece, one nephew, and cousins. At Bill s request, there will be no calling hours or public services. He was born in Newbury, VT, March 25, 1923, a son of Ralph E. and Jessie Louise (Orser) Burroughs. He attended Newbury Graded School and Newbury High School. On September 20, 1945, he married Bertha Rollins. A lifelong Newbury resident, he was a farmer, logger and truck driver in the area and worked at the Four Corners Farm for 15 years. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing, bird-watching, and taking rides. He listened to country music and attended square dances in West Newbury for many years. He had been a 4-H leader. Each morning he looked forward to connecting with his CB friends. Every spring he hosted a sugar on snow party for his family. Survivors include his wife of 64 years Bertha (Rollins) Burroughs of North Haverhill, NH; four daughters, Mary Lou Boyce and husband David of Wells River, VT, Jean Welch and husband Ronald of Wells River, Linda Farquharson and husband Robert of Groton, VT, and Susan Burroughs of Newbury; two sons, William Burroughs, Jr. and wife Bonnie of Woodsville, and Leonard Burroughs and wife Susan of South Ryegate, VT, 12 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a granddaughter Andrea Raye Emerson on January 3, 2000; a sister Elsie Hall; three brothers, Robert O., John R., and Rex P. Burroughs. Howard started his lifetime career as a self-employed dairy farmer. Howard married Deborah Bergeron on December 11, 1976. For the past 5 years he worked part time at Pete and Gerry s Organics in North Monroe. He enjoyed hunting, farming, socializing, dancing, Fox News, helping anyone he could, and traveling. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and adopted children . He was predeceased by his parents, Howard B. Ward, Sr. on July 20, 1967, and Barbara Baker Ward on April 14, 2006, and a niece, Mary. She was born in Ryegate, VT, October 1, 1918, a daughter of Linwood and Emma (Crane) Whitehill. Thelma was a 1937 graduate of McIndoes Academy. In 1940 she married Glenn R. Fearon and he predeceased her in 1951. Thelma worked for more than 15 years as a dietary aide at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, NH. She was a member of the Woodsville United Methodist Church, the Girls Club of the Church, and a member of the Friends of Bath. She was an avid reader and wood carver, having taken lessons from Harriett Hinman in Monroe. She made handmade stationery and wedding invitations. Thelma also enjoyed walking and mountain climbing in the area. She moved to Monroe in July 2002. She is survived by a son, Wayne D. Fearon and wife Bobby-Ann; a daughter, Jane I. Fearon both of Monroe; two grandchildren, Christina Fearon and Neal Gombas of Peacham, VT and Glenn Fearon and wife Laura of Monroe; four great grandchildren, Dylan and Josie Gombas of Peacham and Matthew and Breanna Fearon of Monroe; a brother-in-law, Leroy Ryder of Nantucket Island, MA; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Esther was a graduate of Lyndon Institute, Class of 1949. Esther married Louis Thomas, Jr. on June 16, 1951. She worked at HP Hood and Sons and Hovey s Shop. Esther enjoyed needlework, playing cards with friends and cheering her family along at the race track. Her family and friends enjoyed time with her at Harvey s Lake, making pickles and frequent family gatherings. She traveled to Florida for the winter over the last decade and enjoyed time spent golfing, playing bingo, and eating out with her many friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Reuben and Elva Richardson; and her husband of 55 years, Louis Thomas, Jr. on March 15, 2007. Army during World War II, and prior to his retirement he worked for 38 years at the Norton Pike company in Littleton. Survivors include his wife, June (Corey) Hall of Littleton, a daughter, Linda Halverson of Littleton, two sons, Leonard Hall of Enfield, NH, and Larry Hall of Burlington, VT; his daughter in law, Karen Hall of Albany, NY, six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Hall and brother, Frank Hall, Jr., both of North Haverhill. John Howard Poor
....show , 67, County Road, died on Friday, April 30, 2010 at his home. He was born in Bath, NH, September 10, 1942, the son of Harry C. and Shirley (Lyndes) Poor. John married Harriet Clark on January 26, 1963. When he was younger he had worked for Hood s Plumbing and Heating of North Haverhill, and later worked as an auto mechanic at numerous garages in Hanover, Thetford, and Fairlee. John also worked at Walker Motors Sales in Woodsville for many years, retiring in December of 2009. He enjoyed auto racing, especially dirt track racing. In the mid 1970 s he raced at Bear Ridge Speedway in Bradford, VT. Throughout the years, John worked in many different areas around Bear Ridge, most recently as assistant flagman. He traveled around the Northeast with C.V. Elms and his # 6 modified dirt car as his chief mechanic and builder. Along with his daughter, Debbie, he had a passion for horses and showed them at area equine events. He served as a volunteer for North Country Home Health and Hospice, and also served in the National Guard and was discharged in 1968. At home, he enjoyed watching and feeding the variety of birds that frequented his feeders and birdbaths. John will be remembered for his quiet demeanor, big heart, and his desire to help whenever possible. He was predeceased by his wife of 42 years, Harriet Poor on January 25, 2005; his parents, Harry C. and Shirley Poor; and a sister, Marie Poor. Survivors include his daughter, Debbie Sandvil of Center Haverhill; a sister, Patricia Hatch of Groton, VT; and several nieces and nephews. She was born in Newbury, VT, August 3, 1936, the daughter of Clayton and Lena (Ledger) Flint. Prior to the death of her husband Clinton, she assisted him with his carpentry and home construction business. Jeannette enjoyed traveling, and for many years enjoyed seasonal travel between Florida, New Hampshire and Vermont. She was predeceased by her husband Clinton Boyce in 2004, and her brother Sam Flint in 2008. Survivors include three sons, Stephen Boyce of Thornton, NH, Michael Marland of Spofford, NH, and Clinton Boyce of Marina Del Ray, CA, a daughter Audrey Crowe of Bethlehem, NH, along with several half sisters and brothers, nieces and nephews. George Chalmers McKelvey, Jr.
....show , 85 of Clough Road, died on May 8, 2010, at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, NH. George was born in Lowell, MA, on July 28, 1924, to George Chalmers and Doris (Hird) McKelvey. He graduated from Lowell High School in 1942. While there he was a member of the band and played at the World s Fair in New York in 1939. George attended the University of New Hampshire and played solo trumpet with UNH band. In his sophomore year, he was drafted into the US Army where he remained from 1943-1946. After attending his basic training at Fort McClellan, AL he was assigned to the Anti-Tank Company of the 326 Glider Infantry Regiment of the 13th Airborne Division in the European Theater. Later he marched down 5th Avenue in New York City in the famous Victory Parade with the 82nd Airborne. He completed his service at Fort Bragg, NC. Upon his return to civilian life, he returned to UNH where he received a BA in History in 1949 and an MA in History in 1950. From 1950-1952, George served as principal of the North Hampton Elementary School. From 1952-1953, he taught at Woodsville Elementary School in Woodsville, NH. The following year, he became the teaching principal there until 1969. When the Woodsville and Haverhill School Districts combined, he was appointed as full time principal of the then K-8 schools, Woodsville Elementary and the James R. Morrill School in North Haverhill. He remained at the two schools until retiring in 1980. He enjoyed listening to and collecting Big Band Music. Traveling, golf, reading and sports (especially the Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots, and Bruins) were his passions and his family meant the world to him. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Mary (Downs) McKelvey: their son George C. McKelvey III and his wife Judy of Newport, VT; granddaughter Meredith of Boston, MA; his sister-in-law Eleanor Riordan of Dover, NH along with several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by four generations of the Kimball and Morrill families who have been best friends and neighbors for 54 years. Albert (Abe) Read, III
....show , of 440 Clark Pond Road, North Haverhill was called home to Jesus on May 12, 2010, at the age of 89. He passed at home after a lengthy illness surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Plainfield, NH on October 27, 1920, the son of Lena (Rogers) Read and Palmer Clark Read, the sixth of seven children. He was a 1938 graduate of Kimball Union Academy. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Kathleen (Philbrick) Read; his daughter, Cynthia Read Woodward; his sisters, Phyllis Sutherland, Ada Smith, and May Atwood; and a brother, Palmer C. Read Jr. He is survived by two sisters; Kate Wilder of Plainfield and Jean Hebert of Keene; three daughters: Joyce Read, Linda Stoddard and her husband Robert of North Haverhill, Faith DellaRova of Haverhill, a son: Albert K. Read IV and his wife Dawn of West Lebanon, as well as an adopted daughter, Ann Clement of North Haverhill; eleven grandchildren: David K. Laurie, Peter C. Laurie, Anne K. Carey, Matthew R. Smith, Carrie A. Smith, Robert E. Stoddard Jr., Samantha A. Stoddard, Michael A. Dimarzio, Erica L. Hendrickson, Hannah S. Read, and Joshua P. Read, fifteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. During his lifetime he was an accomplished dairy farmer owning first The Charlie William Place on Route 12A, then Sky Ranch on Blackhill in Plainfield, and then Shadow Lawn Farm in Claremont. It was in Claremont that his dairy farming skills had shown the brightest, winning many state and national awards. Abe enjoyed cattle dealing, and was always on the lookout for beautiful cows. He was an active member of DHIA, the Ayrshire Breeders Association and the Holstein Breeders Association. He also served on many local and regional farm related organizations, including the Farm Credit Association, Farmers Home Administration, the Farm Bureau, the 4-H Advisory Committee and was a long time 4-H leader. He was an avid pulling steer enthusiast and trainer. Abe retired from dairy farming in the fall of 1983. He built a new home in Plainfield, now known as Prospect Pastures, and began raising Tunis sheep and working steers. It was at this time that Abe became very active in the Plainfield Historical Society, and was pivotal in the restoration of the Blow-Me-Down Grange of which he was a lifetime member. His final retirement came in 2003 when he and his wife moved to North Haverhill. In the past few years he enjoyed his garden, and was always looking for something new to plant. He recently completed a collection of his memoirs which have been greatly enjoyed by his many friends and family. A graveside service will be held at the Plainfield Cemetery at 11 AM on Saturday, May 15, 2010. ....show , 98, of Briar Hill Road, died May 17, 2010 at Cottage Hospital, Woodsville, NH. She was born in Barnet, VT, November 14, 1911, the daughter of Jesse and Lena (LaBelle) Russell. She was a graduate of the Barnet public schools and of Wells River High School. She also attended the Boston School of Domestic Science and took courses at the Eastern Maine General Hospital in their Dietary Department. Pearl had been a longtime North Haverhill resident where prior to her retirement, she worked in the kitchen at the Grafton County Home. She had been a member of the Barnet Congregational Church since 1927, and a 60 year member of Iona Lafayette Chapter # 42 OES of North Haverhill, which is now Mt. Eustis Chapter # 37 Order of the Eastern Star, Littleton, and was active in all aspects of the chapter. She was also a member of the Pine Grove Grange in Bath, and was a member of the former Pink Granite Grange of North Haverhill. She was predeceased by her husband Max G. Robinson on February 16, 1976, and her brother Gordon E. Russell on August 20, 2008. Survivors include her brother in law Fred Robinson and wife Audrey of North Haverhill, and their daughters Judy Stimson and husband David and family of Bath, and Laury Theriault and husband Paul and family of Monroe, NH, and her friends Paula and Richard Stevenson of Barnet, VT. Stephen Charles White
....show , 70, died on May 17, 2010, at the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury, VT. Stephen was born in Bristol, CT on January 8, 1940, to Everett C. and Grace (Gearing) White. He graduated from Peacham Academy in 1958 and from Johnson State College in 1982. Following his marriage to Marcia Livingston on March 14, 1959, he entered the US Army and served as a Chaplain s Assistant for three years. Steve was a self-employed building contractor and later worked for NCMC in St. Johnsbury. He retired as the Administrator for the Town of Danville in 2002. Stephen was a member of the Peacham Congregational Church where he served as a Deacon and on the business committee and church council. He was also active in supporting the church youth group. He served as a volunteer and is a former Chief of the Peacham Volunteer Fire Department. He was a 43 year member and former Master of the Washburn Lodge #92 F&AM of Danville and was a District Deputy of the Grand Lodge of Vermont. However, his greatest passion was for his community and its youth. He coached Little League for 15 years and worked with the Babe Ruth League and youth basketball. Along with his good friend, Jim Craig, they opened the Peacham Ski Tow and operated it for several years. They also reestablished and reopened the Peacham gym. He was involved with the Fourth of July events and initiating Green-Up Day in Peacham. Following his retirement, he spent countless hours supporting his grandchildren s events at school, with sports, and generally enjoying their friendship. He enjoyed the time spent at the camp on Martin s Pond and traveling with friends Mac and Mary Wright of Indiana. He was predeceased by his father Everett on October 26, 1986, his mother Grace on June 28, 2002, and by two grandchildren Randy Michael White and Nicole Rae White. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marcia White of Danville; four sons, Daniel M. and wife Cindy, Richard E. and wife Jill, and Darren H. and wife Ann, all of Danville, and Jeremy S. and wife Sarah of Peacham; 15 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; a sister Patricia Kavalski of New Britain, CT; a brother David N. Buck White and wife Mary of Barnet, VT; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. There will be no calling hours. ....show age 80 and a resident of Haverhill, NH passed away on May 18, 2010 at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, NH. Born January 3, 1930 to the late Fred and Mary (Clarke) Ganshaw she resided in the Western New York area. She married Norman W. Martin in 1948 and raised her family in Gasport, NY. Marilyn was employed for many years in the Social Services Department of Hilltop Nursing Home also located in Gasport, NY. She enjoyed camping and sailing with her family on the Great Lakes and renovated a summer cottage on Lake Ontario with her husband Norman. She and Norman retired to Haverhill, NH, and immersed themselves in the restoration of a home there. Gardening, antiques and her pets were a particular source of pleasure. Winters were spent touring the South in their motor home. She was predeceased by her brother Fred in 2000 and her husband Norman in 1999. Marilyn and Norman were married for nearly 50 yrs. She is survived by three sons; Jeffrey W. Martin of E. Corinth, Vt., Scott T. Martin of Newbury, Vt. and Timothy M. Martin of Ringoes, NJ. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren. ....show , 62, of Montview Drive, died May 20, 2010 at her home following a brief illness. She was born in Jacksonville, FL, June 4, 1947, the daughter of Edward and Dorothy (Naugle) Naylor. Raised in Indiana, she graduated from Martinsville, Indiana High School and Flagler College, St. Augustine, FL. She has worked as a school bus driver for Belyea Transportation, formerly of Monroe, and First Student Bus Company, and served as an EMT on the Monroe FAST Squad. Charlotte lived in Monroe, NH most of her adult life and was a member and Past Worthy Matron of Olive Branch Chapter # 1 Order of the Eastern Star of Lancaster, NH and Mt. Eustis Chapter # 37 of Littleton, NH. She currently was serving as the Grand Martha for the Grand Chapter of New Hampshire. Charlotte enjoyed flower gardening, as well as, music and playing her guitar. She was predeceased by her husband Roger Grimsley on May 21, 1985. Survivors include her two daughters, Jessica Brusseau and husband Jon of Littleton, NH and Jennifer Grimsley and fianc Erik Smith of Cambridge, VT; six grandchildren, Nathan Brusseau, Courtney Brusseau, Joseph Rodger, Wyatt Rodger, Josh Hill, and Devon Hill; her mother in law, Arlene Quick and husband James of Rochester, NY; and her adopted children, Joan and Carol Emerson of Woodsville. J. Harold Nelson
....show , 90, of Ryegate died peacefully at home on Saturday, May 22, 2010. He was born in Ryegate on October 21, 1919, the son of James and Edith Nelson. He graduated from Woodsville High School in 1936 and received his B.S. in Agriculture from the University of Vermont in 1941. Upon his graduation, he returned to the family farm in Ryegate, where he went into partnership with his father and his brother Howard. He married Vera Fifield on September 2, 1944 in Groton, and they lived on the family farm all their married life. He was especially proud to be the sixth generation in his family to be farming Wayside Meadow Farm and to have it designated as a Bicentennial Farm in 1974. Harold was a member and Elder of Ryegate Presbyterian Church, a 65-year member and past Master of Blue Mountain Grange, a member of Farm Bureau, and served as an auditor for the Town of Ryegate for many years. For 20 years after their retirement, he and Vera spent winters in Palmetto, FL where they enjoyed the weather and many wonderful friendships. Harold was the family historian, was always interested in current events, loved music, had a great sense of humor, and loved to laugh, but his greatest love in life was his family. He always supported his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in all their endeavors. He was a steward of the land and was held in high esteem by the Ryegate community. He and Vera managed their farm to be sustainable and successful. He is survived by his sister Janette Forrest and her husband Richard of Reading, MA; four children: Nancy Perkins and her husband Gene of Ryegate, Bruce Nelson and his wife Gail of Ryegate, Bob Nelson and his wife Jodi of Lincoln, NH, and Ken Nelson and his wife Bobbie of Ryegate; nine grandchildren: Joe Perkins, Gordon Perkins and his wife Jennifer, Curt Nelson and his wife Emily, Andrea Dennis and her husband Ryan, Jim Nelson and his wife Christy, Tracy Nelson, Jeremy Nelson and his wife Natal, Marcy Singleton and her husband David, and Katie VerLee and her husband Graham; 16 great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by Vera, his loving wife of 63 years, his parents, and his brother Howard and sister-in-law Evelyn. Dorothy Libbey Jesseman
....show , 86, passed away at Speare Memorial Hospital on May 26, 2010 after a prolonged illness. She was born in Warren, July 3, 1923, the daughter of Natt and Florence (Balch) Libbey. Dot, as she was always called, graduated from Plymouth High School with the class of 1942, and from Plymouth State (then Plymouth Teachers College) with the class of 1946. She taught school in Wentworth for eleven years and in Warren for ten years. She married Raymond Bud Jesseman on June 21, 1947 and he predeceased her on February 26, 1996. Dot is survived by her son, Gary, of Wentworth, NH; cousins Pat McIsaac of Plymouth and Leland Prebble of Burlington, MA; a brother-in-law Stanley Jesseman of Campton, NH; nieces Dawn Jesseman of South Paris, ME, Deidre Jesseman of Wentworth, and Susan Diehl of Roslindale, MA; nephews Alan Jesseman of Glencliff, NH and Brian Jesseman of Old Orchard Beach, ME. Dot was active in many town organizations, including Minerva Temple Pythian Sisters for over 50 years, joining in 1947. She coordinated the Senior Lunch Program that was sponsored by the Pythian Sisters. She was a member of the Warren United Methodist Church and was Secretary of the Administrative Board for 25 years. Dot also coordinated the monthly drivers for the Warren Meals of Wheels Program. Dot possessed a great talent for writing, and was often called upon to write poems for special occasions. Her most recent was for the NH Night at the Pythian Hall for their fundraising dinner. ....show peacefully completed her life's journey of 95 years on May 30, 2010, at Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill. Elizabeth (Betty) was born in Waltham, MA, on February 21, 1915, to Gertrude Howard Beal and Justus Hunting Beal. Betty graduated from Littleton High School, Class of 1933, and Plymouth Normal School in 1936. After college, Betty boarded a ship to Europe on her own, proof of her independent spirit and zest for life. She began her teaching career in 1936 in North Stratford, NH, where she taught for three years. On January 19, 1939, she married Holmes Parker at Pecketts in Sugar Hill, NH. To this union were born Judy, Diana, Howard, John, and Jeffrey. The family resided in Littleton, NH, where Holmes managed Parker Drug Store for many years. Betty was an active member of All Saints Episcopal Church and the Order of Eastern Star. After raising her children, Betty resumed her teaching career as a first grade teacher for 17 more years at Lakeway Elementary School in Littleton. Retirement took Betty and Holmes to Haverhill, NH, in 1976 to fulfill Betty s dream of living in an old colonial house, which they shared with her daughter Diana and family. Betty and Holmes were key players in helping to run the family s floral and apple stand businesses. At this time, Betty joined St. Luke s Episcopal Church and volunteered at Cottage Hospital. Betty s greatest passion in life was her family. Her motherly touch and marvelous sense of humor endeared her to many over the years and especially to her caregivers at Grafton County Nursing Home. Her family is eternally grateful to all the devoted and competent caregivers at the nursing home who showered her with love and excellent care in the winter of her life. Betty was predeceased in 1999 by Holmes, her loving husband of 61 years; her brother Howard Beal in 1918; and her sister Helen Lucretia Beal in 1985. She is survived by her children Judy Millen and husband Rich of Littleton, NH; Diana Forbes and husband Lawrence of Piermont, NH; Howard Parker and wife Inger of Bo-i-Telemark, Norway; John Parker and wife Regina of Dalton, NH; and Jeffrey Parker and wife Mary Beth of Rush, NY; her grandchildren Heidi Millen; Greg Millen; Holly Beth Parker; Seth Warren-Crow; Martin Parker; Erik Parker; Katherine Parker; and Stephen Parker; great grandchildren Abby Millen; Garret, Allie Elizabeth, and Grady Millen; step-great grandchildren Ursula, Gwendolyn, and Stella Hoyt; her step-sisters Janice Beal Manning and Nancy Beal Bush; and her step-brothers Judd Beal and Allen Beal. Betty s indomitable spirit, selfless ways, wise council, and sharp wit left a lasting imprint in the sand. She will be forever remembered as one very special lady. ....show , 68, of Pine Park, died on Monday, May 31, 2010, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. Chuck was born in Hanover, NH, on March 27, 1942, to Alton Bud and Phyllis Arlene (Morrill) Cleveland. He graduated from Haverhill Academy, Class of 1960. He enlisted in the US Army on June 28, 1960 and was honorably discharged on June 15, 1963. While in the Army he worked in nuclear weapons assembly. Following his time in the service, he attended the Thompson School of Applied Sciences at the University of New Hampshire from 1963-1966. He moved to Erie, PA and operated his own dairy farm from 1966-1973. Upon his return to New Hampshire, he was employed at Trumbull-Nelson in Hanover from 1973-1987 as a heavy equipment operator and was known as the craneman. He also worked at Oakes Brothers in Bradford, VT from 1987-2008 and most recently had been working at Hatchland Farm in North Haverhill, NH. Chuck served as a Deputy Fire Warden and was on the Fire Department in Piermont, NH. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping. He enjoyed the past several winters in Arizona. He was predeceased by his father, Bud Cleveland on January 17, 2002 and by his mother, Phyllis Cleveland on May 2, 2007. He is survived by his sister Nancy Cole of Piermont and her children, Jack Monahan of Orford, NH, Tracy Monahan of Piermont, and Frank Monahan of St. Augustine, FL. ....show , 94, of Spruce Drive died May 31, 2010 at his residence following a period of declining health. He was born in Hartford, CT, June 2, 1915, a son of Edgar H. and Edyth (Erickson) Bogardus. During World War II he served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army with the 438th AAA Battalion in England, France, Belgium and Germany. He was discharged in November 1945 and returned to Connecticut. He then began a long career as an automobile technician with Wagner Ford in Simsbury, CT. He moved to Ryegate in 1977 and has enjoyed his retirement living in Vermont. He is a member of Earl Brock Post # 78 American Legion Post of Newbury, VT. He was predeceased by his first wife, Stella Jane (Bennett) Bogardus on May 5, 1996. He was also predeceased by a grandson, David A. Bogardus and a sister, Estelle Case. Survivors include his second wife, Helen (Simonson) Bogardus, to whom he was married on July 12, 1997; a daughter, Marion Ivey of Simsbury, CT; two sons, David Bogardus of Tariffville, CT and Steven Wood of Ryegate; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Case of Simsbury, CT; a brother, Warren Bogardus of California; along with one niece and five nephews. She was born in Barnet, August 2, 1915, a daughter of Edwin M. and Jennie (Chapman) Harvey, and for several years lived in the Washington, DC area where she was an administrative secretary for the Central Intelligence Agency. She married Bruce Somers on July 14, 1960 and they returned to Vermont in the early 1960 s. Thelma was a member and former Deacon of The Presbyterian Church of Barnet at West Barnet. She was predeceased by her first husband Bruce in 1979 and her second husband Malcolm Martin of Lyndonville, and two sisters Elizabeth and Emily. Survivors include a step son Dr. Bruce C. Margery was born in Piermont on April 2, 1923, to Fay Sargent and Gladys (Chesley) Emery. She was a graduate of the Orford Academy. After high school she was employed at the Brattleboro Retreat in Brattleboro, VT as a switch board operator. While working there she met her future husband, Robert D. Manning. She worked as an occupational therapy technician at the East Liverpool Extended Care Facility in East Liverpool, Ohio. She also was a seamstress doing alterations for many years. She lived in Ohio and West Virginia prior to returning to Piermont in 1981. She enjoyed summer gardening and spent many hours compiling an Emery family genealogy. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Douglas Manning on January 15, 1991; her son, George Manning in November 2007; and by her four sisters, Christie E. Emery, Erma Kurtz, Bernice Pierson on April 19, 2008, and Velma Holden on September 11, 2009. She is survived by her children, Peter Manning and his wife Becky of Chester, WV, Gregory Manning of Charden, OH, and Christie Manning of Orford, NH; two nieces, Susan Holden and Sandra Knapp both of Haverhill, NH and one nephew, Stanley Toot Holden, Jr. of Haverhill, NH. She was born in Newport, VT, August 30, 1919, the daughter of Ray E. and Ethel V. (Cutler) Hunt. Virginia graduated from Orleans High School, Class of 1937. She was also a graduate of Somerville, Massachusetts Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. She served for 4 years with the U. S. Army Nursing Corps during World War II. She was stationed with the 184th General Hospital in Mansfield, England. Virginia married Robert L. Williams on November 26, 1947. During her working career she was a registered nurse at Cottage Hospital for 34 years, retiring in 1991. She served as Director of Nursing for 10 years. Virginia was a member and former superintendent of the Sunday school of the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the South Ryegate Mother s Club, where she organized clinics for preschool children. Virginia served as the health officer for the Town of Ryegate, as well as serving as the school nurse for the Town and the Orange School. She was a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Corinthian Chapter # 42 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading, handiwork, crossword puzzles, stamp collecting (especially air mail stamps), music, nature, and her annual trips to the coast of Maine. However, her family was most important to her. She was predeceased by her husband Robert on July 25, 1972; one grandson, Michael R. Williams on November 1, 2006; two brothers, Edwin P. and Ray E. Hunt; and two sisters, Marylyn H. Stewart and Florence H. Slosberg. She is survived by three children, Joyce W. White and husband Stewart of Ryegate Corner, VT, and twins, Susan J. Williams of Groton, VT and Robert H. Williams and wife Darlene of South Ryegate; five grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Larkin H. Burrill
....show , 91, formerly of Monroe, died on June 5, 2010, at the Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough, NH. Larkin was born in Monroe on November 22, 1918, to Howard Winfield and Jean (Hosford) Burrill. Upon graduation from McIndoes Academy, he entered Roosevelt Aviation School at Roosevelt Field, Long Island, NY. Following his graduation in 1940, he worked as a mechanic for Northeast Airlines at Boston, Bangor and Presque Isle, ME. He also worked for American Export Airlines at LaGuardia Field, NY, where he crewed as a mechanic on their fleet of three Sikorski VS44 Flying Boats, providing the first transatlantic service to the rich and famous. He entered the US Army Air Corps on November 16, 1942 and served in the European Theater with the 93rd Fighter Control Squadron until his discharge as a Staff Sergeant on April 6, 1946. He remained in the Air Reserves with the 147th Composite Squadron until discharged on April 7, 1949. He married Amy Joan Wright on June 21, 1944 in Hempstead, NY. In August 1946, they returned to Monroe to work on his father s dairy farm and in 1951 they moved into his grandparent s home. Prior to his retirement he served as the Postmaster in Monroe for 37 years. He was a volunteer on the Monroe Fire Department. He served on the town Board of Selectmen. As a long-time member of the Monroe Mens Club, he helped institute the Connecticut Valley Basketball Tournament in the early 1950s. This popular local event continues to the present and funds the Mens Club College Scholarships. He also served many terms as a trustee of the Monroe Methodist Church. An avid downhill skier, during ski season he could often be found at Cannon Mt. enjoying his favorite pastime. In summer and fall he was a regular on the Lisbon Country Club golf course. He was predeceased by his wife Amy Joan on January 8, 2001; a daughter Beth Amy Arseneault in 1993. He is survived by a daughter, Jean Frechette and husband Dr. Richard Frechette of Peterborough; a son Thomas W. Burrill and wife Betty of Concord, NH; five granddaughters and three grandsons; and three great grandsons and one great granddaughter. There will be no calling hours. Bob was born on January 12, 1937, in Haverhill, NH to Leonard and Gladys Evelyn (Bodge) Clifford. He married Mabel Clough on November 8, 1958. Bob was a self-employed building contractor and in later years he worked part time maintaining the office building of the Town of Haverhill. For more than 35 years, he belonged to the National Guard in both New Hampshire and Vermont, retiring in 1997. Bob was a member of the North Haverhill United Methodist Church, a Cemetery Commissioner for the Town of Haverhill, a member of the North Haverhill Fire Department, and was a former member of the Heritage Committee. He was predeceased by his parents, Leonard and Gladys Clifford, a brother Leonard Clifford, and a sister Marlene Clough. Carolyn Lee (Berwick) Barrett
....show , 66, passed away June 7, 2010 at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was born at the former Brightlook Hospital in St. Johnsbury, March 18, 1944 a twin daughter of the late Benjamin and Treasa (Ashford) Berwick of Peacham. Carolyn graduated from Peacham Academy Class of 1962 and lived in the Massachusetts area for many years before returning to Peacham. She married George Barret on June 4, 1983 in Manchester, NH. Carolyn and George enjoyed boating and camping. Carolyn had a great love for horses and dogs, especially the Dalmation breed, having two dogs of that breed, Fuego and Nixon. Carolyn suffered for many years with RSD (Reflux Sympathetic Disease) and was able to help other people afflicted with the disease through her knowledge. She completed several pieces of string art which she had the patience to complete to perfection. She was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, Benjamin and Allen Berwick. Carolyn is survived by her husband George, a daughter Terry King and her two children Kristanna and James both of Brunswick, ME; two sisters Joan Lowell of Derby, VT and twin sister Carol Workman of Edgewater, FL; also a sister in law Jean Berwick of Peacham, VT; several nieces and nephews, stepsons and stepdaughters. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service at the Peacham Village Cemetery, June 26, 2010 at 2 PM followed with refreshments served at the Peacham Congregational Church. ....show , 85, died on Thursday, June 10, 2010, at the Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill. Betty was born on May 31, 1925, in Lisbon, NH to Berton and Clara (Gordon) Bringhurst. She worked as the Matron for the Home for the Aged of Grafton County in Woodsville, NH and at the Lisbon Shoe Shop. She was married to Wendell L. Campbell and he predeceased her on December 28, 1989. She was also predeceased by her mother, Clara on August 29, 1994 and by her father, Berton on December 24, 1999. She is survived by three daughters, Nancy J. Richardson and husband Harry of West Columbia, SC , Peggy A. Sulham and husband Bob of Lisbon, NH Donna L. Emerson and husband Kendall of Swiftwater, NH, and; a son Burton L. Campbell and companion Karen of Woodsville; four granddaughters and four grandsons; several great grandchildren; two brothers Arthur Bringhurst of Washington, CT and Ronald Bringhurst of Rochester, NH, and nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be on Friday, June 18, at 1 PM, at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH. Friends and relatives may call from noon until the time of the service at 1 PM. Malcolm Dewey Mike Millette
....show , 84, of Indian Corn Mill Road, died at his home on June 14, 2010. He was born on August 28, 1925, in Haverhill, NH to John T. and Catherine (Dean) Millette. Mike served in the US Navy from 1943-1946 and again from 1951-1968. During his time in the Navy he served aboard LST s and destroyers during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Upon his honorable discharge, he worked as a butcher at Aldrich General Store in North Haverhill and was later employed as a delivery man for Stateline Potato Chips. He was also a cook and maintenance and lawn care worker at The Gardens Assisted Living Home in Williamstown, VT. He was a member of the American Legion Ross- Wood Post # 20 of Woodsville and the VFW. Mike has always enjoyed fishing with his grandson Jason, great grandsons Cameron and Gavin, and dear friend Bud Carle. Mike had a true love of horses and horseback riding. Mike was predeceased by a grandson Scott Wiggins on November 1, 1993 and by three brothers, John, Frank, and Harry Millette. He is survived by four daughters, Nancy Doucette of Swiftwater, NH, Michelle Millette of Lisbon, NH, Debbie Menard of Lyman, NH, and Christal Crickett Millette of Willow Springs, NC; two sons, Michael Millette of Lisbon and Mark Millette of Landaff, NH; three step-sons, Phil Davidson of Woodsville, NH, Perry Davidson of Manchester, NH, and Tom Davidson of Williamstown; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; his former wife, Brenda Millette Deming of North Haverhill; three sisters, Kathleen Brown of Barre, VT, Priscilla Darby of East Ryegate, VT, and Bernice Malinoski of East Hartford, CT; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Richard graduated from Nashua High School. He worked as a buyer for the maintenance department for 9 years at Cabot Creamery in Cabot, VT. While working at Cabot Creamery his co-workers became valued friends and a second family to him. He was very passionate about photography and floral gardening. Hoyt was born in Haverhill, NH on February 12, 1931, to Roy Gilbert and Ruth (Moffett) Darby. Following World War II, he served in the US Navy. He then worked for many years in the maintenance department for the Beamis Company at the former Ryegate Paper Mill. Hoyt was a member of the Ryegate Corner Presbyterian Church, the Pulaski Lodge #58 F&AM of Wells River, VT, and the Ryegate Historical Society. He was an avid outsdoorsman who enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting. He was predeceased by his father, Roy, in 1938; his mother, Ruth, in 1995; his brother, Wyman Darby, in 1979; and by his step father, Arthur G. Hobbs, on May 24, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Priscilla (Millette) Darby, to whom he was married on March 25, 1951; three children, Stephanie D. Cross and husband Michael of Tarpon Springs, FL, Roy A. Darby and wife Kim of St. Johnsbury, VT, and Hoyt M. Darby and wife Vickie of East Ryegate; eight grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren; two sisters in law Bernice Malinoski of East Hartford, CT, and Kathleen Brown of Barre, VT, three nieces and several cousins. She was born in St. Johnsbury, VT, July 13, 1923, the daughter of Walter C. and Bessie (Wooten) Lowrey. A longtime Woodsville resident, Shirley was a member of St. Luke s Episcopal Church and the ECW Group of the Church. She was also a member of the Cottage Hospital Auxilary and volunteer at the hospital. She was predeceased by a son, Donald Gary Smith of Burlington, VT and by two grandsons, Shawn Smith of Sutton, VT and Bruce Impey of South Royalton, VT. Survivors include her life partner Donald Smith; one daughter, Mary-Ellen Andrews of Palm Beach, FL: five sons, Michael Smith of Sutton, VT, Brian Smith of Richmond, VT, Terry Impey of North Haverhill, NH, Shaun Impey of South Royalton, VT, and Dennis Impey of North Haverhill; 20 grandchildren and several great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Helen Lucille Herr
....show , 91, of Old West Newbury Road, died at her home on June 19, 2010. Helen was born in New Haven, CT, on April 27, 1919. She was a graduate of the former Southern Seminary in Buena Vista, VA. On August 19, 1949, she married Howard Herr. Following her husband s retirement in Connecticut, they moved to South Newbury. Helen was a member of the First Congregational Church of Newbury where she formerly served as the choir director and organist. She also gave private piano lessons in the area. Helen dedicated her life and love to her family, first and foremost. She had a life-long love of music and played the organ and piano. She was also an avid gardener, enjoyed baking, cooking, reading and traveling. She was predeceased by her husband of fifty years, Howard Herr, on January 15, 2000. She is survived by two sons, Charles H. Herr, MD and wife Judy of Hanover, NH and John E. Herr and wife Anne of Bolton Valley, VT; a step daughter Nancy V. Maturo of Madison, CT; and four grandchildren, four step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. The funeral service will be on Thursday, June 24, 2010, at 11 AM at the First Congregational Church of Newbury, 4915 Main Street South, Newbury, VT, with Rev. Edward Jager, officiating. Burial will follow in the Oxbow Cemetery, Newbury.
