Marian attended Trinity Grade School in Westfield, NJ and graduated from Union High School, Union NJ. She trained at Colt Memorial Hospital in Newark, NJ. She served as a Sergeant with the U.S. Army as a nurse. She served from March 1945 until her discharge in June 1946. She worked as a pediatric nurse for many years in New Jersey, retiring in 1979. For many years she lived in Lady Lake, FL and moved to Vermont in 1995. She was a communicant of St. Joseph s Catholic Church, Woodsville, NH. Marian was a member of the American Legion Post #30 in Lyndonville, VT. Marian was married to Frontis T. Fallaw who predeceased her on April 1, 1994. He was born Aug. 14, 1988, in Lebanon to Richard G. and Luella (Moody) French Sr. He graduated from Kearsarge Regional High School and had worked at his brother's restaurant, the Red Barron in Newport. Most recently he worked for New London Hospital. He enjoyed reading, cooking, his two dogs Kramer and Brady, and running with his brother Will. Bob graduated from Rogers High School in Newport, then attended the Rhode Island School of Design where he graduated as a draftsman, working in Rhode Island, California, Arizona, and Vermont. Upon moving to Ryegate in 1962, he worked as a dairy farmer and retired from this profession. Bob will be remembered maintaining the grounds of Warner s Campground and bartending at Phil s Drive-In. Bob had a passion for sailing and being on the ocean. He loved fishing, reading, music, dogs, and good ice cream. For the past three months, he had been working at Coventry Log Homes in Woodsville. David was predeceased by a brother Lucas Davis. He is survived by his mother Brenda Martel of Haverhill and his father George F. Smith of Piermont, NH; two sisters, Tara Davis-Thompson of Concord, NH and Laura Smith of Boulder, CO; a niece Elizabeth Laura Thompson and a nephew Alexander David Thompson, as well as numerous extended family members and countless friends. , 85, of Yeaton Road, died at her home on Sunday, January 17, 2010, following a lengthy struggle with Parkinson s Disease. Lois was born on October 9, 1924 in St. Johnsbury Center, VT, a daughter of Roscoe S. Joe and Doris E. (Wallace) Yeaton. She was a graduate of Plymouth High School and graduated from Plymouth Teacher s College in 1946. She taught at Dow Academy in Franconia, NH and at Goffstown High School. After her marriage to Chester R. Ireland on January 30, 1949, she was a homemaker and also became the bookkeeper for Ireland Lumber Company. Lois was a charter member of the Baker River Bible Church in Wentworth, NH. She enjoyed homemaking, particularly cooking and sewing. She was predeceased by two children: Timothy Ireland in 1982 and Laurie Ireland in 1997 and by a brother, Phillip Yeaton, in 2002. She is survived by her husband of nearly 61 years, Chester R. Ireland; two children, Sara Tatham and husband Steve, and Chester Mike Ireland and wife Jackie, all of Plymouth; five grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; three sisters, Marjorie Farnsworth of West Lebanon, NH, Doris Evans of Haverhill, NH, and Joanne Burns of Bedford, NH; a brother, Dean Yeaton of Plymouth; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was born in Rutland, VT, May 15, 1949, the son of William N. White and Martha (Metcalf) White Keith. Bill graduated from Wells River High School, Class of 1967. He was literally the last person to graduate from the High School before Blue Mountain Union School opened. After high school, Bill attended Norwich University in Northfield, VT. He joined the U. S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam War from July 8, 1970 to August 14, 1974. Bill married Shirley Folmar on March 30, 1974. They lived in Texas from the early 1970 s before returning to Vermont in December 1995. Bill worked as a Blowout Specialist for Neil Adams Firefighters in Houston, Texas and spent time in Kuwait following Desert Storm extinguishing oil well fires. In this profession he was able to travel to many parts of the world. Bill loved nature, watching wildlife, working in his vegetable and flower gardens, his cats, and music. He was predeceased by his father, William N. White on August 26, 1992. , 68, of Howe Hill Road, died unexpectedly, January 25, 2010, at Cottage Hospital, Woodsville, NH. She was born the eldest daughter of Charles and Mary (Bonner) Canning, on July 10, 1941, in the midst of a German air raid during World War II, inside a bomb shelter in Greenock, Scotland. Catherine immigrated to the United States on July 25, 1962 and married Robert D. Steel on September 1, 1962. She became a naturalized citizen in 1966 in San Diego, California. They lived for many years on the West Coast. In 1977 they moved to Toms River, New Jersey, later moving to Benton, NH in June of 1985. Catherine and Robert owned Braeside Real Estate. She was an active communicant of St. Joseph s Catholic Church in Woodsville, NH. She was a very passionate reader and was very inquisitive seeking more knowledge. She also enjoyed knitting, history, and politics. Catherine loved helping people and families, whether in times of crisis or just needing a ride to an appointment. She was an active member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority where she held several offices. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Mary Canning; and two brothers, Joseph and William Canning. Survivors include her husband, Robert Steel of Benton; three daughters, Michelle Legare of Woodstock, NH, Gwen Steel of Livingston, NJ, and Theresa Defillipo and husband Michael also of Livingston; a son, John Steel of Las Vegas, NV; two granddaughters and four grandsons; two sisters, Margaret Hitchenson and Bridgett Canning, both in Scotland; and several nieces and nephews. She was born in Lyme, NH, on February 28, 1915, the daughter of George and Emily (Bagley) Tattersall, Sr. Lulu graduated from Walpole Academy in Walpole, NH. She married Frank McCoy in 1934 and he predeceased her in 1937, as a result of an accident. Later she married Forrest Clark, and then George L. Ingerson. She worked on the family farm in Center Haverhill. Lulu enjoyed many handcrafts and would take her work to area flea markets to sell. Along with her siblings, they were great fishing companions. She can best be described as the matriarch and backbone of the family. She was loved by her entire family, and her generosity and nurturing knew no bounds. She was predeceased by her husbands, Frank McCoy in 1937 and George L. Ingerson on September 8, 1982; and her five siblings, Ruth, Dick, George, Marion and Evelyn. Survivors include her two daughters, Phyllis Bellmore and husband Denal Allen of Plainfield, NH and Rita Richards of Swiftwater, NH; a son, Forrest Sid Clark and wife Michelle of Center Haverhill, NH; six grandchildren, Phillip Bellmore, Tilden Wright, Patricia Wright, Wendy Gadwah, Stormy Clark, and Troy Clark; eleven great grandchildren, including Tanya and Mattie Gadwah, Rocky Clark, and Nate Bellmore; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. , 39, of Poor Hill Road, died January 31, 2010, at Cottage Hospital, Woodsville, following an incredibly honest and inspirational battle against gall- bladder cancer. She was born in Hartford, CT, on May 16, 1970, the daughter of Russell Bigelow and Marie (Aremburg) Bigelow. She attended local schools and graduated from Woodsville High School, Class of 1988. While attending high school, she served as a State Officer for the Future Business Leaders of America. Following graduation from high school, Heather lived and studied in Denmark for a year and became fluent in Danish. Upon her return to the US, she worked at the Woodsville Guaranty Savings Bank. She married Jeffrey Poor on June 12, 1993. She later worked for 15 years at the Grafton County Probate Court and while there, she was involved with the State Forms Committee and served as a Notary Public. After leaving the Probate office in September 2008, she joined the family business at Blackmount Equipment in North Haverhill, NH. Heather was a member of the Bath Congregational Church and along with being a Sunday school teacher, she served on the Church Board of Education. She was a member of the Bath School Board, the Haverhill Cooperative Middle School PTA, and Friends of Woodsville High School. Her spirit of volunteerism lead her to assist at the Bath Village School with her children s activities, class functions, and fundraisers. Over the years Heather learned American Sign Language and took early childhood education courses at the School of Lifelong Learning in Littleton. Heather was a beloved wife and mother. She had many loves: being with family and friends, chocolate, walking in the woods, being near the ocean, and doing cross stitch. Her warm infectious smile will not be forgotten. Survivors include her husband of 16 years Jeffrey Poor, and their children Luke Poor and Meghan Poor, all of Bath; her mother Marie Bigelow of Haverhill, NH; her father Russell Bigelow and wife Tracey of Mt. , 97, of Parish House Lane, died on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, NH. She was born to Harold John and Ada (Colson) Thompson on March 26, 1912, in Grays, England. After coming to America, her family resided in New Jersey. Dorothy graduated from Rosedale High School in Rosedale, NJ and from Rutgers School of Landscape Design. Following graduation, she worked in a bank in Newark, NJ and as a landscape gardener and for Forbes Gardening Center, also in NJ. She was a past president of the New Jersey Garden Club. On December 18, 1942, she married Douglas Spies and he predeceased her in 1978. After spending almost her entire life in New Jersey, she moved to Haverhill in 1985 where she was a founding member of the Haverhill Garden Club. She was also a member of the First Congregational Church of Haverhill, UCC. When she wasn t gardening, she enjoyed reading. Along with her husband, she was predeceased by a grandson Nicky Brinker on December 25, 1988; and by her siblings, Irene Rousch, Peggy Krebs, and John Thompson. She is survived by her daughter Abigail Kennedy and husband Bradley of Bath, NH; her grandson Zack Brinker; one niece, three nephews, cousins; and her care-giver Daphne Williams of Haverhill. , (Lt., US Navy Ret.), 89, died unexpectedly on February 11, 2010, at DePaul Hospital, Norfolk, VA. He was born June 9, 1920, in Lowell, MA, a son of Henry Willard Bradley, Sr. and Emma Elizabeth (O Neill) Bradley. He joined the Vermont National Guard in 1938 and in 1939 entered the US Navy and became a test pilot. He spent twenty-one years in the Navy with training in aviation and electronics and retired as a Lieutenant in September 1959. He was the only Vermont resident to earn his flying wings as an enlisted man during World War II. Neil later became a pastor in the Baptist ministry and was the founder of the East Peacham Baptist Church, where he pastored until his retirement. He was a member of the Masonic Order and Scottish Rite Body, and the Order of the Eastern Star where he served as Past Patron and Grand Representative in Texas. He was a former member of the Silver Eagles Association, Fleet Reserve Association, and the Retired Officer s Association. Neil also belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in St. Johnsbury, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and was a 50 + year member of the Grange. He attended the Union Baptist Church in Waterford. He was married to the former Frances Morris on January 1, 1941 and she predeceased him on January 5, 1996, as did his brother Henry Willard Bradley, Jr., on January 12, 2005. Survivors include three children, Marion Elizabeth Smith and husband Henry K. Smith, Jr., of Chesapeake, VA, Neil H. Bradley, Jr., of Norfolk, VA, and Gary H. Bradley and wife Marianne of Vincent, OH; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren four great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He served as a police officer in the City of Boston before moving to New Hampshire in 1991. He married Donna Forss on April 16, 1978. , 95, formerly of Terrace Street, died February 25, 2010, at the Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill, NH. He was born in Barton, VT, February 16, 1915, the son of Adelard and Anne (Corbeil) Grenier. Fred served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in the Asiatic Pacific Theater with D Company of the 172nd Infantry. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He served from February 24, 1941 until his discharge on October 1, 1945. Following his discharge he married Viola Mae Young on June 12, 1948 and they made their home in Woodsville. Fred worked for twenty one years as the custodian at Woodsville High School prior to his retirement in 1981. He also did carpentry work and sold and installed aluminum windows. For many years he also was the sexton of St. Joseph s Cemetery and Church, where he was a communicant. He was a 52 year member of Ross-Wood Post # 20 American Legion of Woodsville and VFW Memorial Post # 5245 of North Haverhill. Fred was predeceased by six siblings, Lionel, Fabiola, Roland, Cecile, Irene, and Pauline and three sisters-in-law, Zellene Burt, Elsie Willis, and Isabelle White. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Viola M. She last served in Washington State as a recruiter and worked in the VA system. Ann was a member and President of the Retired Women s Army Corps Veterans Association. She attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Woodsville, NH. Ann gave of her time to her Wells River Village community by serving as a Village trustee and auditor for the Town of Newbury and by volunteering as a greeter at the Welcome Center and for the Fourth of July committee, as-well-as at the Baldwin Memorial Library. She was predeceased by her parents, Kenneth Tyler on October 23, 1978, and Katherine Tyler on October 19, 1998, and by her brothers James Kenneth Tyler on June 6, 1962, and Paul Denis Tyler on August 11, 2008. She is survived by her goddaughter, Karen Eddy and husband Stephen LaCroix of Burlington, VT, several cousins, and many friends. , 83, of Lake Tarleton Road, died at his home on March 2, 2010. Dale was born in Haverhill, NH, on September 24, 1926, to Earl E. and Edith M. (Belyea) Ramsay. He was a graduate of Haverhill Academy, Class of 1944, and served in the US Army Air Corps in World War II. He married Estella C. Cushing on September 12, 1947. Dale worked for six years as a railroad mail clerk and then as a rural mail carrier in Warren and Rumney, NH for 25 years. He was a member of the Warren United Methodist Church. For over 50 years, he was a member of the Moosilaukee Lodge #63 of Warren and served as a Past Master. He held memberships in the Knights of Phythias in Warren and of the Bektash Shrine Temple of Concord, NH. He was awarded the General John Sullivan Meritorious service medal. Dale was predeceased by a brother, Earl Ramsay and a sister, Virginia Lepkosky. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Estella Ramsay of Warren; four daughters, Cheryl Beraudo of Plymouth, NH, Linda Garland of Campton, NH, Lisa Maccini of Pittsburg, NH, and Kimberly Conrad of Pike, NH; eight grandchildren; a sister, Earlene Derosia of Littleton, NH; and cousins. , 78, died on March 5, 2010 in Vero Beach, FL, where he resided for 35 years. He was born in Concord, NH, May 2, 1931, the son of Roland C. and Florence (Oliver) Ames. He was a graduate of Haverhill Academy and Northeastern University. After graduation, he joined the U. S. Air Force and served in the Korean War until 1954. Bob returned to Woodsville, NH and took over his father s business, Roland C. Ames, Inc. and started a Volvo franchise. Upon leaving New England, he was employed as an automobile sales consultant for Catalano Motors in Cocoa, FL. He became a very close friend with his employer, Dave Catalano and furthered his passion of flying by receiving his license to pilot Dave s jet, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Bob continued his career as a sales consultant until his retirement. He enjoyed cooking, fishing, and golf. He leaves many wonderful friends in Vero Beach and other states. He was a proud member of the Mason s, Grafton-Kane Lodge No. 46 of North Haverhill, NH, and was active in the Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach. He was predeceased by his father, Roland C. Ames; mother, Florence (Oliver) Ames; a sister, Phyllis Ames; and two brothers, Erland and Richard Ames. He is survived by a brother, William Ames of Massachusetts; a sister, Linda Wagner and her husband Howard and their son Chad of Sarasota, FL; and many nieces and nephews. , 90, died March 8, 2010 at her home at Mt. Cube Farm, where she lived since 1954. The former first lady of New Hampshire (1973-1979), passed on the birthday of her late husband, former Governor Meldrim Thomson and on the day she became engaged to him in 1938. Born in Brooklyn, NY the eldest child of William and Anne Kelly she graduated from high school two years early and after completing business school, began working at the Edward Thompson Law Book Company in Brooklyn where she met her husband, Meldrim Thomson, Jr. After living in Brooklyn, NY and Stony Brook, Long Island, Gale and Mel moved to Mt. Cube Farm in Orford, NH in the fall of 1954 with their six children, Peter, David, Thomas, Marion, Janet, and Robb. A gracious lady and loving mother, Gale became famous for her homemade pancakes that she served to New Hampshire legislators at the Bridges House, the official governor s residence, in Concord, NH while she was First Lady. As avid hikers, Gale and her husband climbed all forty-eight of New Hampshire s 4000 foot mountains. Gale also served as a trustee of the Youth Development Center, the Robert Frost Farm in Derry, NH, and as a member of the NH Lilac Commission. Later she served as a trustee of the VT/NH Visiting Nurse Alliance. She is survived by her six children, Peter, David, and Thomas of Orford, NH, Marion Spottswood of Charlotte, NC, Janet Dorf of Weaverville, NC, and Robb Thomson of Wolfeboro, NH, eighteen grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren. , 74, of Scott Highway, died on Monday, March 8, 2010, unexpectedly, at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, NH. He was born in Bolivar, Ohio, December 20, 1935, the son of George R. and Ruth (Blair) Kreis. Dick graduated from Ashland High School in Ashland, OH, Class of 1953. He received his Engineering Degree from Ohio State University in December of 1961. Dick married Diane Brown on June 17, 1961. During his working career, he was involved in the management of the glass manufacturing field for 34 years. Prior to his retirement in April of 1996, he was a divisional Vice President for Kerr Glass Manufacturing and later the Ball Corporation. His profession required him to travel around the country. Dick and Diane moved from Shorewood, Illinois to Groton, VT in June of 1996, following his retirement. He built his own home in Groton, along with his father-in-law, Dale Brown. He was a 40 year member of the Elks Club, an avid golfer at the Bradford,VT Country Club, and served as a selectman in Groton for 6 years. An ardent Ohio State Buckeye Football fan, he has often attended games. Along with his father-in-law, Dale, they enjoyed sugaring. Dick was an avid traveler and enjoyed planning trips for Diane and his family. He was predeceased by his parents, George R. and Ruth Kreis; three brothers, Elmer, Don, and Ward Kreis; and his mother-in-law, Janice Brown. , 90, of County Road, died March 10, 2010 at his residence. He was born in Haverhill, July 14, 1919, the son of Harry M. and Maude (Bowles) Patridge. He graduated Haverhill Academy, Class of 1937 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received a Good Conduct Medal. In January 1944 he was designated a sniper in the 10th Armored Tigers. While assigned to Company B, 20th Armored Infantry Battalion, 10th Armored Division, during the Battle of the Bulge, he received a Bronze Star medal for heroic achievement for his actions on December 20, 1944, in Noville, Belgium. He married Elizabeth S. Kingsbury in July of 1949. Chink was a self- employed dairy farmer and also worked for the U. S. Soil Conservation Service until 1970. He then served a rural mail delivery route from the North Haverhill Post Office until 1986. Chink also drove school bus for Arthur Clough at Clough Transportation in North Haverhill for many years. He was a member of VFW Post # 5245 and a member for more than 60 years and Past Master of Grafton Kane Masonic Lodge # 46, both of North Haverhill. He was a former member of the Haverhill School Board. He spent the last 50 years going to Quebec fishing at Club Labit in Forestville, Quebec. Chink had a passion for hunting and the outdoors. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth S. Patridge on July 26, 2005 and by his brother, Harry M. Patridge, Jr. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Jones and husband Bruce of North Hampton, NH; two sons, David Patridge of Sandwich, NH and John Patridge and wife Christine of Holderness, NH; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; a sister Harriett Thurston of Bradford, VT; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. , 88, formerly of South Ryegate, died on Friday, March 12, 2010, at the Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill, NH. Bernardine was born in St. Johnsbury, VT, on October 29, 1921, to Bernard and Alice (Morrison) Eastman. She graduated from Groton High School where she enjoyed athletics, especially basketball. She also played the clarinet in school and continued to play with the George McLure Student Band. Following high school she attended Vermont College where she took secretarial classes. After college and during World War II, she spent two years in New York City working. Bernardine always enjoyed her summers on Groton Pond. She was a member of the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church and the South Ryegate Ladies Aid. She always maintained a positive attitude and will be remembered for her ever-present smile. Bernardine was predeceased by her husband, Americo Louis Chet Rosa on May 26, 1962, and by her second husband Harold Lee Tom Eastman on May 15, 1975; and her brothers, Dr. Cyrus D. Eastman and Seth Eastman. She is survived by her daughter Gayle Adele Darling and husband Jeff of Barnet, VT; two sons, Chester Bernard Rosa of St. Petersburg, FL, and Cyrus Eastman Rosa and wife Linda of The Villages, FL; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her companion and caregiver, Richard Evans of Groton, VT. , 80, a former longtime resident, died Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the Grafton County Nursing Home, North Haverhill, NH. He was born at the homestead farm in South Ryegate, VT, June 23, 1929, a son of Dick and Flossie (Rhodes) Welch. He was stationed in Germany while serving with the U. S. Army during the Korean War. Kendell was a self employed dairy farmer with his brother Wilbur on the homestead farm in South Ryegate. Kendell married Shirley Barnes on May 14, 1955. A few years later they purchased their own dairy farm in Newbury, where he farmed for many years. When Kendell stopped farming, he went to work for Piper Construction in Bradford, VT in the home construction business and at the P & H Truck Stop in Newbury. He was a member and deacon of the First Congregational Church of Newbury and Ross Wood Post # 20 American Legion of Woodsville. He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Shirley Welch on March 10, 2003; a son, Erwin Ira Welch on September 15, 1981; a sister, Alta Rush; and three brothers, Wilbur Welch, and twins, Vernon and Virgil Welch. Surviving family members include two daughters, Winifred Patten of Pike, NH, and Alice Welch and partner, Thomas Glass of Castleton, VT; two sons, Kendell E. Welch, II of Newbury, VT and Martin B. , 80, of Davenella Drive, died on Sunday, March 21, 2010, at Cottage Hospital, Woodsville, NH. Norman was born in Hartford, CT, on November 4, 1929, to Charles Edward and Janet (Bennett) Chaffee. He served in the US Army from 1950-1952 during the Korean Conflict. For 28 years Norman was employed in Nashville, TN, for various trucking outfits as a long-haul trucker. He later worked as a taxi driver in Nashville. Norman lived in Greenbrier, TN for several years and returned to Vermont in 2005 after his marriage to Madeline. He was a life member of the VFW Post #1038 of Lyndonville, VT, the Ross-Wood Post #20 of the American Legion of Woodsville, NH, and the Korean War Military Association. He was also active in the Civil Air Patrol. Norman was a ham radio operator and belonged to the ARRL, the National Association for Amateur Radio. He was predeceased by his brothers Carlos, Neil, and Barry, and a sister Velma. He is survived by his wife Madeline Chase Chaffee of East Ryegate; three daughters, Linda, Bonnie, and Kathy all of Tennessee; three sons, Lawrence, Barry, and Michael, also of Tennessee; two daughters-in-law, Jane and Susan; and two sisters, Linda of Colorado and Jeannette of Pennsylvania. She was born in Winthrop, ME, December 29, 1908, the daughter of John and Stella (Emery) Garland. Marion taught in Milan, NH for several years prior to moving to Woodsville. She was an elementary school teacher, having taught 3rd grade at the Woodsville Elementary School for many years. She attended the Wells River, VT Congregational Church. She enjoyed painting, crafts, stenciling, gardening, flowers and enjoyed her own home and homemaking. Marion married Clarence S. Knox on June 25, 1938 and he predeceased her on February 7, 1979, and she was also predeceased by a brother, Thomas Garland. Survivors include a son, John H. Knox and wife Beverly of Northfield, VT; and two grandsons, Paul and Christopher Knox; two great grandchildren, Caden and Hazel Knox; a brother Edmund Garland of Vinton, VA; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. Bill married Jeannie E. Granger on Nov. 17, 1956. He worked for First National, Northeast Hardwood, the Maurice Church Farm, and Grafton County Farm all in North Haverhill. He later worked for the Town of Haverhill Highway Department and Newman Lumber in Woodsville. Bill was a special police officer for the Town of Haverhill, Village of Wells River, and Orange County Deputy Sheriff s Office. He also worked for the Haverhill Cemetery Association and, prior to his retirement, Pete s Rubbish Removal in Haverhill. He sold tickets at Bear Ridge Speedway in Bradford, VT for several years. Bill was a member and former trustee of North Haverhill United Methodist Church and former member of the National Guard. He belonged to the Pink Granite, North Haverhill, Mt. Moosilauke, and currently the Baker River, Pemi Valley Pomona and State Granges. He enjoyed hunting, dancing, card playing and TV wrestling. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Tara Ann Downing; a sister, Edith Horne; four brothers, Ernest Red Horne, Leslie G. Horne, Sr, Fred Horne, and Maurice Pete Horne. , 75, of Bunga Road, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, surrounded by her family. She was born in Woodsville, NH, January 16, 1935, the daughter of Charles A. and Hazel (Dunkley) Irwin. She grew up in North Haverhill and graduated from Haverhill Academy in 1953. She was united in marriage to Reginald B. Smith on February 27, 1953. They spent the next fifteen years serving in the military in various parts of the world, finally settling in the Haverhill/Bath area in 1968. Evelyn spent over 25 years working in the Grafton County Commissioner s office, retiring as Executive Director in 1997. Outside of family, work was her passion. She had a strong work ethic and was extremely dedicated to the responsibilities of any position she assumed. During her retirement, she enjoyed wintering in Florida with her husband. She had a special love for the Thresholds and Decisions program in Grafton County that she helped start and worked with for several years. She loved the opportunity to help others. Evelyn was very active with the Ross Wood Post # 20 American Legion Auxiliary in Woodsville where she and her husband spent many hours helping with the annual turkey dinner, Bingo nights, parades and any other occasion where they were needed. She was a member of North Haverhill United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for several years. When her children were young, she was active in the Bob-O-Link 4H Club, especially the sewing group. Evelyn always loved people and will be missed by many. She will be remembered as a caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, an infant son Gary Reginald, and a baby daughter. Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Reginald B. Smith of Swiftwater; sons Cecil W. Smith and wife Suzette of North Haverhill, NH and Joseph M. Smith and wife Heidi of Charlestown, NH; daughters Carol L. Aaron and husband David of Florida, and Regina S. Weeks of New York; seven grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Lillian Brooks and her husband Frank Toot Brooks of Lisbon, NH and Doris Hayton (and late husband James) of Illinois; and a brother, Charles A. 83, of Dartmouth College Highway, died on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at his residence. He was born in Haverhill, NH, November 16, 1926, the only child of Charles Abbott and Ethel A. (Hill) Millette, Sr. Charles served with the U. S. Marine Corps, Platoon 43, of 6th Marine Division and was later transferred to the 5th Marine Division, where he served with the infantry on the assault of Iwo Jima during World War II. He subsequently achieved the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. Charles married Laurette Greenwood on October 25, 1946. After he returned from the war he worked the Woodsville Fire District. He later worked at Holbrook Grocers in Woodsville, while working nights and weekends for the Haverhill Police Department for 14 years. He also worked with the U. S. Forest Service as a Federal Forest Officer and was the last tower operator on Black Mountain. While at the forest service he marked timber and cared for Wildwood Campground. When the tower was closed in the early 60 s, he went to Barber School in Manchester, NH and barbered in Bradford, VT for several years until a fire destroyed the shop on Main Street. Following the fire he went to work as a boiler fireman at the Lebanon, NH Armory and retired in 1986. He was a member of the Ross-Wood American Legion Post # 20 of Woodsville, NH. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Laurette (Greenwood) Millette of Haverhill; two sons, Bruce C. Millette and Becky of Fairlee, VT and Brian W. Millette and wife Patty of Haverhill; one daughter, Diane M. Freeman and her husband Warren of Haverhill; 4 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; and numerous cousins.
