Marc Reuben Sindell
....show died Thursday, July 22, at his home in Montpelier.
He was born Nov. 26, 1950 in Brooklyn, New York, growing up in Brighton Beach with his parents, Manny and Leonore, and his older brother, Allen. The family moved to Johnstown and Chester, Pennsylvania but Brighton Beach was always home to Marc.
He was a proud graduate of Lincoln High School. He went to Brooklyn College and then transferred to Goddard College in 1969. This is what brought Marc to Vermont where he made his home for the rest of his life.
Marc was a unique and unforgettable individual. He was gentle, generous, and kind. He had a natural curiosity about everyone he met. His lifestyle was simple, almost spartan. He was an avid photographer. He was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees and thoroughbred racing. Ask Marc almost any trivia question, especially concerning sports, particularly baseball, and he would have the answer. He was the lifeline you needed to call if ever a contestant on "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire". It was often suggested by his close friends, in all seriousness, that he should open a shop and hang out a sign advertising "Expert On Everything".
Marc loved good food and wine. He was an audiophile, early computer user, and lover of jazz, particularly the music of Chet Baker.
Marc loved to swim and spent many hours at Wrightsville Reservoir. He loved to take long, contemplative walks throughout Montpelier and, when he could, in the country. Marc loved the natural beauty and open farmland of Vermont and lived his life in ways to protect it.
Marc's compassion, wit, and unique wisdom will be missed. He was that special person who could find and share the cosmic vision at the confluence of The Three Stooges, Chet Baker, and Burt Lancaster as THE SWIMMER.
Marc returned to New York City in the early seventies for several years where he worked at The New York Times. But his love of Vermont and his friends here brought him back.
About six years ago, he moved to Los Angeles attracted by the warmth of the sun, the calming rhythm of the ocean, and the fantasy, however remote, of maybe breaking into the movie business. Marc was looking for different ways to address inner turmoils. Marc could be quite the character.
The magnetic realities of Vermont and the peace he could find here brought him back after less than a year in L.A.
Marc had a varied employment history which, in addition to The New York Times, included working at the Bean Bag (predecessor to State Street Market), The Tavern Motor Inn (now Capitol Plaza Hotel), and Twin City Subaru. He will best be remembered for his long history of working intermittently over the past 30 years at Buch Spieler Music in Montpelier.
Marc is survived by many who loved him dearly including: his brother Allen and his wife Louise Sindell of Danbury, Conn.; Allen's son, Andrew Sindell of Westchester, N.Y.; Allen's daughter, Jamie Schmitt, her husband Keith and their baby daughter Jordana of Fayetteville, N.Y.; the close 'extended' families of Fred Wilber of Marshfield, Dennis Wilber of Plainfield, and Paul Shper of Barre; and the many friends Marc has made over the past 41 years in Vermont.
Contributions in Marc's memory can be made to Central Vermont Community Action Council.
All who would like to share in remembering Marc are invited to a memorial service to be held at Guare & Sons Funeral Home, 30 School Street, Montpelier on Sunday, August 8, at 11a.m.
Dave Royal Smith
....show , 70, died Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington surrounded by his family.
He was born on July 13, 1940 in Barre, VT, the son of Albert and Cora (Jacobs) Smith. He attended Montpelier Grade Schools and Montpelier High School. Following his schooling David served in the US Navy from March 31, 1959 to his discharge on March 28, 1963.
On November 18, 1963 he married Connie Sherman. They later divorced. On June 18, 1994, he married Valerie Parker.
Dave loved life. To know Dave was to love Dave. He came on strong but once you got to know him he had a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off his back or the last dollar he had in his pocket. Dave worked for twenty years as warehouse manager for VT Department of Liquor Control. Later with Safety Kleen as a truck driver and most recently with Bond Auto parts.
Dave loved fishing and riding his motorcycle. He instilled the love of fishing in his grandchildren especially Ty and Lillie. From the time the water was turned on at camp on Campbells Bay till the frost was on the pumpkin, that was where you could find him. Over the 40 years at camp, he made hundreds of friends from all over. Certain folks rented the same camp year after year and always made time during their vacations to come over and visit and catch up on things that had happened in their lives in the past year. Dave loved that.
Dave could have a strange sense of humor. He once purchased a new bed that once he got it home, found it was to short for him to sleep in (he was 6'5"). He remedied that situation by taking a chain saw and cutting off the foot board. Problem solved. He once didn't like the way gun smoke ended and simply shot the TV.
One of Dave's favorite sayings was "had 5 wives but still have the same motorcycle." And the winter he decided to take his motorcycle apart in the livingroom in Marshfield, you had to be real careful where you stepped. Ever try vacuuming around hundreds of motorcycle parts? Not fun.
Dave's love for animals was incredible. Over the years he had many cats and dogs. In July of 1991 we acquired Jasper. He quickly became Dave's best buddy. You never saw Dave at home without Jasper by his side. Dave even trained Jasper to fetch and return whatever Dave threw for him.
Dave loved his grandchildren. It's a good thing he only had 3 as he was running out of room for tattoos on his arm for their names and dates of birth and some unique picture or object to commemorate each one. When birthdays rolled around, the sky was the limit. On Easter one year he was reading the paper that morning and came across a stuffed rabbit for sale. He called the number, got the address and the next thing you knew, in he walks with this stuffed rabbit almost as tall as he was to give to Lillie and who at the time was three feet tall. She loved it. When Chelsea got her license, Papa bought her a guardian angle to put over her visor to keep her safe. He was so proud of her.
When all is said and done, take a few minutes to "Ponder" (one of Dave's favorite words) about the man we knew and loved, and the friend he was to us all and the good times we all had together. He will be missed.
Survivors include his wife, Valerie Parker Smith; a daughter, Trudy Smith of Northfield; step daughter, Erin Delphia of Waterbury; step son, Dennis Parker of Barre; three Grandchildren, Chelsea Delphia, Ty Delphia, and Lillian Parker; niece and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents, and sister, Donna Wheeler.
Calling hours will be held on 12:00-2:00 pm Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Guare & Sons Funeral Home. A memorial service and military honors will begin at 2:00. Following the service, friends will be asked to join the family at the American Legion in Montpelier for a time of fellowship.
At this time the family would like to send a heart felt thank you to all the doctors and nurses who made Dave feel like family at Shepardson 4 at Fletcher Allen, especially Jamie. Thanks from the bottom of our hearts.
And a Special thanks to Zeb, Willey and Spike for all their help and friendship throughout his difficult time. Thanks guys.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, VT Division, 55 Day Lane, Williston, VT 05495.

Elizabeth Joan Winter (Joan)
....show 91 of Freedom Drive, Montpelier died at Mayo Nursing home on Saturday, July 31, 2010. Joan was born in 1919 in NYC daughter of J. Thornton Mac Donald, Jr. and Mae Edna O'Neil MacDonald.
She lived her early life in Greenwich, Conn. and New York City where she married Lieutenant JG, Proctor Winter, USCG during WWII. When Proctor returned from the service, they moved to Port Washington and then Roslyn Estates, NY where she lived until his death in 1973. Joan followed her daughter Judy to Vermont the same year living first in Middlesex Village and then in Montpelier.
Joan had a great sense of humor and always "dressed like a lady". Her demeanor could fool people into believing she was a stuffed shirt but just get her laughing and you'd know who you were dealing with. She worked at Kids Clothes in Waitsfield in the 70's and early 80's then retired. In Montpelier, she was a regular on State and Main Streets befriending shopkeepers and having coffee and a sweet with friends. Joan had a way of collecting friends from all walks of life though she never cared to participate in clubs or organizations. Many felt she was their "best friend".
She was schooled at Eden Hall, Pa., Convent of the Sacred Heart 91st Street NYC, Manhattanville College and Parson's School of Design where she studied dressmaking. Known for her beautiful handwriting and her long, long newsy letters (a lost art)... as far as she was concerned there was always a reason to write a personal note.
Joan is survived by, three daughters: Judith (Mrs. John) Phelon, Elizabeth (Mrs. Gregory) McCarthy, Ann Winter and, her brother Douglas E. MacDonald and his wife Marybeth, two son's in law, John Phelon and Gregory McCarthy, four grand children Christopher Fabiano, Matthew Fabiano, Jonathan McCarthy, Christine McCarthy, three great grandchildren: Matthew and Addison McCarthy and Andrea Bais. Noel George Wood
....show of Montpelier died and went to heaven to join his beloved first grandchild, Andrew Bedard, on March 28, just after returning home from Sunday Mass.
Noel was born December 22, 1931 in St. Johnsbury, VT, to the late George Levi and Eugenie (Jennie Ladrie) Wood. He attended school in St. Johnsbury, graduating from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1950. During the Korean Conflict, Noel proudly served his country in Germany with the Vermont National Guard 172nd Infantry Division. He was a lifetime 3rd degree member of the Bishop Brady Council of the Knights of Columbus and a 4th degree member of the Charles W. Jasman Assembly.
On July 7, 1956, Noel and Jeannine Gagne of Montpelier were married in St. Augustine's Catholic Church. In rapid order they had 5 children: Candace, George, Douglas, Philip and Stephen.
Noel was a very hard worker who always provided for his family. He was employed with his brother, Bob, at Wood Brothers Market in St. Johnsbury for several years prior to marriage and helped to support his widowed mother. He then trained as a manager at McClellan's store in Montpelier, where he met the love of his life, Jeannine. Noel was a long-time employee of the State of Vermont, Dept. of Employment Security, from which he retired in 1990. He also worked a 2nd job for numerous years at First National Supermarket, until he finally agreed to let Jeannine return to work after more than a dozen years at home raising their children.
Noel and Jeannine were very excited as they watched the building of their brand new house on Berlin St. and moved in on Nov. 4, 1971. They were more excited 20 years later when they were able to burn the mortgage. Noel loved and was exceedingly proud of his children and grandchildren. He was the perfect example of "If I'd known grandchildren were so much fun, I would have had them first!" He liked showing off his Christmas decorations and enjoyed the help of his grandchildren in putting them up. He liked order and tidiness - the pantry was arranged like a mini-mart. Noel loved oldies music, but detested loud music, especially the bass "BOOM BOOM" from passing cars. He was very passionate about his political views and could argue for hours. Noel claimed to hate grocery shopping, yet spent hours every Friday morning at the Price Chopper where Steve works, talking to everyone he met. He also liked to drop by the Hannaford's where 3 of his grandchildren and an old buddy from First National work. As Jeannine grew frailer from her arthritis and other health problems, Noel took over more household chores, along with his son George. It wasn't done without a lot of grumbling, yet it was done with a great deal of love.
Noel is survived by Jeannine, his wife of nearly 54 years; daughter Candy Bedard, husband Brian and their son Kyle of Winooski; son George of Berlin and his daughters Natasha, Victoria and Brittany of Barre; son Doug of Hudson, NH; son Phil, wife Karen, and their daughter Erin and stepson Patrick McInnis of Litchfield, NH; son Steve, wife Terri and their children Kaitlyn and Ben of Barre. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Reginald, Robert and Gerald Wood and in 2008 by his beloved "#1" grandson, Andrew Bedard.
