JUNE (BAER) DAVIS
....show BURLINGTON - June Gloria Davis died peacefully at Fletcher Allen Health Care surrounded by close friends on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010. She was born on June 27, 1915 in Minneapolis, Minn. the daughter of William and Katheryne Baer. June was the wife of Herbert T. Davis, who predeceased her on Dec. 25, 1987. June and her late husband founded the Burlington Optical Center and were instrumental in the development and growth of the Humane Society of Chittenden County, Vt. She cared for and loved all of God's creatures. She never underestimated the power of animals to heal and would bring them to local hospitals to visit with patients. After her husband passed on, she continued her work with the Humane Society as a board member, benefactor and general adviser. The Humane Society of Chittenden County's June Davis award is awarded annually to their person of the year. "Kindness is healing" was a phrase that June spoke often and always sharing a smile and personal generosity represented how she lived her life. She has a strong belief that God cared about us and would communicate with her. With these beliefs and life values, June was an inspiration to many people and was truly a woman to look up to and admire. June loved to travel the world with her husband and close friends to appreciate the world and learn about the places and people she visited. June's favorite time of year was Christmas. She would spend a great deal of time getting her home ready for the holidays and took joy in the spirit of the season. June volunteered for several area organizations especially the American Red Cross. Because she thought it was so important to continue contributing while she was able, she created a tarradiddle about her age to continue volunteering. June was passionate about helping and not just causes and animals. She assisted individuals in our community who needed help. June was a model in her younger years and maintained that style, polish and true beauty inside as well as out. Although June had so surviving children, she is survived by nephews-in-law and nieces-in-law, Charles Davidson, Steven Davidson, Sandy Davidson, Sharon Gershenbaum, Howard Stone, and Elaine Warsaw, her special friend Susan Wood and many close friends. Her warmth caused many to feel as though she was "a second mother." She considered her four-legged companions her special children. Her home almost always had a special child. We would like to thank the staff at Green Mountain Nursing Home for taking care of June in her last months with a special thank you to Ginger Santore. We would also like to extend our great appreciation for the wonderful care June received at Fletcher Allen Health Care in the Emergency Room and on McClure 3 and 4 and Shepardson 4. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the Chittenden County Humane Society, 142 Kindness Ct., South Burlington, Vt. 05403. A memorial service will be celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 at 1 p.m. in Elmwood-Meunier Funeral Home.
WINNIE LOU DAVIS
....show JERICHO - Winnie Lou Davis, 59, passed away on May 20, 2010, at her home. Winnie was born July 24, 1950, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Bordeau) Davis. She graduated from Mount Mansfield Union High and Graham Junior College in Boston, Mass. She worked for Hall Communications and then at WCAX Television for 18 years. Winnie Lou owned quarter horses in her youth and showed them through the 4-H and the Vermont Quarter Horse Association. Her interest in horses grew and diversified in her adult years. She was the President of the Vermont Horse Shows Association and a founding member of the Vermont Hunter Jumper Association. She created and administered the Vermont Young Hunter Futurity program. Winnie's part-time job was that of horse show secretary at shows all over northern Vermont for many years. In that role, she got to know all the competitors, their families, and the professional horsemen very well. Winnie's greatest influence was felt by young riders. She was a source of constant support, encouragement and cheer to hundreds of children over the course of three decades. That support often came in the form of four-leaf clovers which she found and gave to riders for good luck. There are still dozens of riders who keep them in their helmets. Winnie's golden voice announced the names of winners at many annual awards banquets. She would often ad lib about someone who had had a challenging year or whom she felt was the most improved rider. She didn't forget "the critters" either and could bring the whole crowd to tears with an original poem about a pony who had retired or died. Her influence was felt throughout the region. In 1999, she was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the New England Equitation Committee. And, in 2007, she became the sole member of the Vermont Hunter Jumper Association's Hall of Fame. She was an avid sports fan, Nascar, golf, Yankee baseball, Giants football, and horse racing to name a few. Winnie is survived by her aunts, Deliah Siple, Jean Peterson, Kaye Bordeau; and uncle, Jimmy Bordeau; several cousins; and a special friend, Fran Hogan. Winnie will head out on the most amazing trail ride of her life to join her parents and brother, John "JD", who have predeceased her.
