DR. KENNETH A. BROWN
....show COLCHESTER - Dr. Kenneth A. Brown died at home on Sept. 11, 2010 with his family at his side after his courageous four-year battle against bone cancer. Dr. Brown was born in New York City Jan. 16, 1951. He was a 1973 graduate of Rutgers College, New Brunswick, N.J. and went on to earn his doctorate in medicine at Cornell University Medical College in New York City. After completing his internship at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, he served as a resident and clinical fellow at Harvard University hospitals until 1984. Over the next 25 years, Dr. Brown headed the Nuclear Cardiology Department at the Fletcher Allen Health Care hospital in Burlington. He also was named Professor of Medicine at the University of Vermont College of Medicine in 1996. Dr. Brown is internationally recognized for contributions to non-invasive cardiac imaging, having been published more than 100 times. In 1983 he authored a landmark publication demonstrating that nuclear myocardial perfusion imaging not only detects coronary artery disease but also identifies prognostic implications. Dr. Brown was an original member of the group that created and established the Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology in 1996 and served as President of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology 1998-99. He was an invited speaker, chairman or moderator at many national and international scientific meetings including international conferences held in Argentina, Canada and Italy. Ken was an avid rock and ice climber and more recently an accomplished cyclist. He scaled such magnificent mountains as the Grand Tetons, Wyo.; Mt. Baker and Mt. Shuksan, Wash.; the Sierra Nevadas and the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states Mt. Whitney, Calif.; as well as some of the highest mountains in Ecuador and Bolivia. In 1998 he attempted to reach the summit of Mt. McKinley in Alaska but he and his climbing party were turned away by a horrific storm halfway up the mountain. His most challenging climbing adventures were in Labrador, Canada where he became the first person to summit an extremely technically difficult ice face which he named Ravens 5th. In 2007 Ken completed the 100/200 Ride Vermont in a Day, riding his bicycle 200 miles over two days across all of Vermont along scenic Route 100, shortly after undergoing hip replacement surgery. Ken was a loving, caring and giving husband, father and friend. Each time Cancer re-entered his life he did not focus on his limitations even as each additional surgery was more painful and debilitating. Leaving behind his physical challenges, Ken focused on a new sport or a cribbage game. He lived his life with appreciation, acceptance, graciousness and perseverance. Ken was able to spend his last winter in Key West where he married wife Marlene on Jan. 4, 2010. He loved this tiny island and rode his scooter to local beaches, restaurants, cafes, galleries, and music events. Living by the ocean brought Ken a sense of peace, comfort and joy in the simple pleasures he came to appreciate so much.
