, 69, of Lyman, N.H., died suddenly Nov. 9, 2009, at home. Born in 1940 in Littleton, N.H., to Brendon and Christina (Thompson) Girouard. Penny grew up on Union Street in Apthorp. His father operated a grocery store on Main Street and Penny learned custom meat cutting at an early age. Penny operated the Main Street store after his parents retired, and later he moved the custom meat cutting business to his shop on Union Street. "Penny's Meats" was a familiar sign in Littleton for many years. Penny graduated from Littleton High School in 1959 and recently celebrated his 50th class reunion. As a young man, Penny was an expert marksman on a local pistol team. As a lifelong baseball fan, he coached Babe Ruth baseball, and he was a dyed-in-the-wool N.Y. Yankees fan. In his final days he was rewarded to see his Yankees win the World Series again. In 1977 Penny married his wife Katharyn and they moved to Dodge Pond in Lyman where they converted Penny's camp into their home. They brought up their son Ken on Dodge Pond, enjoying swimming and canoeing, and the outdoor life surrounding them. Penny enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels in wintertime, and the hummingbirds during the summer. He especially enjoyed the flying squirrels landing in his feeder at night, and the occasional raccoon that would find its way into the feeder. He was a member of the Littleton Elks and Littleton Lions Clubs for 40 years. In his youth he was recruited by Gene Clark to be Santa Claus and for the next 25+ years, he spent his Christmas Eve nights delivering toys and baskets to children and families in the surrounding area. Eventually, his son Ken took over the position of Santa Claus and Penny became his driver elf. Throughout his career, Penny was involved in several different fields. He and Kathie were caterers for several years, and Penny was well-known for his cooking expertise. Penny also worked for Reinhold Associates as a real estate agent, retiring several years ago due to declining health. His favorite hobby after he retired was playing duplicate bridge on-line. Penny was an avid golfer and a former member of the Twilight League at the Ammonoosuc Country Club. After leaving the Twilight League, his special golf team was made up of Jon Peabody, Tom Golden, Dick O'Rourke and his best friend Chuck Collins. They played golf as far north as Newport, Vt., and on many courses throughout the state of New Hampshire. The first time Penny "broke 40" was on his wedding day, shooting a 39 for nine holes.
