George H. W. Hayes II

passed away peacefully on Feb. 26, 2009, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center surrounded by his loved ones. He was the son of the late Ann Hooks Hayes and William F. Hayes, born in Ipswich, Mass., on Sept. 8, 1938. A brother William F. Hayes Jr. survives him. George had recently celebrated his 70th birthday at a surprise party, and was overwhelmed by the attendance of so many friends. The look of excitement and joy on his face is one we will all remember. George graduated from Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass., and Brown University, receiving his law degree from the New England School of Law in Boston, Mass. George practiced law in his family law practice established by his grandfather in 1906 until his retirement to Vermont in 1987. George was a devoted friend to generations of Burke Mountain Academy students, graduates and their families. He worked tirelessly on behalf of the academy, the community of East Burke and was a Burke Mountain icon. He was one who gave freely of himself and asked nothing in return. If a person's life is measured by how they impact the lives of others and how many people they affect, George's impact was extensive and deeply felt. His physical presence will be sorely missed, but his spirit will endure and be ever present on the mountain, in our town and in our hearts. A celebration of life will be held later this spring.
