, 61, died on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, at his residence on Swiftwater Road. Jim was born in Lubbock, Texas, June 18, 1948, the son of James Miller and Mollie (Davis) Halsey. He graduated from Monterey High School in Lubbock, Texas. He received his BA from Texas Tech University and his MA from Villanova University. He married Pamela Stavley on Nov. 20, 1971. Jim and Pam lived in Northern Virginia for 20 years prior to moving to Woodsville in 2005 to fulfill a life long dream of living in New England. Jim loved the history and natural environment around New England. He loved to travel and visit historical sites and museums. He had a passion for hiking and sightseeing throughout New England. He worked as a technical writer for Microdata GIS in St. Johnsbury, Vt., and retired from EDS in Virginia. He was predeceased by his father, James Miller Halsey. Survivors include his mother, Mollie Halsey of Lubbock, Texas; his wife of 37 years, Pamela Halsey of Woodsville, N.H.; two sons, Jordan Halsey of Fairfax, Va., and Brendan Halsey and wife Vanessa of Fairfax; two grandchildren, Kaylie and Patrick Halsey also of Fairfax; a brother, Mike Halsey and wife Mary of Stockbridge, Ga.; two nieces, four nephews, one aunt, and cousins. Charles Burton "Charlie" Piper

, 72, a native of Hardwick, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at the Greensboro Nursing Home. He was born Feb. 26, 1937, in Hardwick, the son of the late George and Edith (Ward) Piper. He attended Hardwick public schools and graduated from Hardwick Academy in the class of 1955. He served in the Vermont Army National Guards. In his earlier years he was employed at West Store on Main Street in Hardwick. For 30 years he worked an assistant manager for the First National Company in Hardwick and Rutland. He was a co-owner of Pete's Family Market in Hardwick and until he retired in the early 2000s he was employed by Cabot Creamery. Charlie was a member of the United Church in Hardwick and the Caspian Lake Lodge Masonic Order F & AM. He enjoyed golfing, collecting coins and the Casino in Montreal. Survivors include a sister, Mary K. Piper, of Hardwick; and several cousins. Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home, 60 Elm Street, Hardwick. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the United Church in Hardwick, with the Rev. Jennifer Geary officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in the Main Street Cemetery in Hardwick. , 88, of St. Johnsbury, died Friday evening Aug. 7, 2009, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon. She was born Dec. 31, 1920, in Lyndon, Vt., the daughter of Allen and Flossie (Gilbert) Lynaugh. Marion was a graduate of Lyndon Institute, and on Oct. 29, 1941, she married Leonard Root Jr. Marion worked many years for LUV'S department store on Railroad Street in St. Johnsbury where she was the assistant store manager. She had also worked for McCullon's five and dime store during the 1960s, also in St. Johnsbury. She was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Church, helped at the Catholic Central School hot lunch program, and helped start the St. John's Church Credit Union. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the DAV. Marion and Leonard enjoyed dancing, and taught square dancing and ballroom dancing in their home for many years. She was an avid bingo player and card player. She was a wonderful cook who enjoyed taking good care of her family. She also enjoyed traveling and wintering in Arkansas. Survivors include: her husband, Leonard J. Root of Danville; four sons, Leonard Root III and wife Theresa of St. Johnsbury Center, Michael Root and wife Joanne of Brownington, Terrence Root and wife Lynn of Lebanon, N.H., and Timothy Root of McIndoes; three daughters, Frances Root of Danville, Sheila Delworth and husband Leslie of Danville, and Tammy Jones and husband Wendall of Warminster, Penn.; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Russell Lynaugh of St. Johnsbury; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by: her parents; her aunt and uncle Bertha and Maurice Gilbert who raised her and her siblings after the death of their mother; two sisters, Barbara Cross, and Glenn Lynaugh; and a grandson, Aaron Root in 1969. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in St. Johnsbury with the Rev. Dwight Baker celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours. , 66, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, at Cottage Hospital surrounded by his family. He possessed the rare quality of actually being content and his sense of humor will be missed. He resided in Wells River, Vt., with his wife of three years, Doris Avery Hart. Raised in Groton he is survived by two sisters, Joyce Powers of Wells River and Debra Tinkham of Groton; and his brother Richard Hart of Florida. He raised a family in Groton with then wife Sandra Watkins Hart Shute. He leaves behind his children and their respective spouses: Robin and Mark Edwards of Groton; Robert and Lynda Hart of West Hartford; Ronald Hart and Claire Merchant of Cambridgeport, Vt.; and Rhonda Ross of San Jacinto, Calif. Step-children and their respective spouses include: Gina and Steve Boyd of Vershire, Vt.; Luke Avery of Bozman, Mont.; Jane and Lou Rossi of Columbus, N.C.; John Avery of Dallas, Texas; Ann and Blaine Hill of West Fairlee, Vt.; and Matthew and Holly Avery of East Thetford. Grandchildren include: Leah Christiano, Melissa Norwalk, Corah Beardsley, Angela DeMasi, Chelsea Hart, Bobbi Hart, and Aaron Hart. Great-grandchildren include Sophia and Jaden Beardsley; Gabrielle Norwalk; Jaxon Christiano; and Colin and Nate DeMasi. Step-grandchildren include: Danielle Sweet, Kristopher Boyd, Luke Avery II, Tom Avery, Jacob and Benjamin Reed, Clint and Caitlin Hill, Jackie, Matthew Jr, Lillian and Elizabeth Avery. Step great-grandchildren include: Jesse and Jackson Sweet; Zachary, Taylor, Caleb and Dylan Avery; Mattie, Ellie, and Joey Reed; and Kristen Hill. , 84, Jefferson, N.H., died quietly on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2009, at Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster, N.H., following a long illness. Mrs. Marshall was born in Gilman on July 12, 1925, the daughter of Miles Sr. and Annie (Rooney) Quigley. Lorraine was a graduate of Littleton High School and following graduation she joined the U.S. Army Nurse Cadet Corps and trained to become a registered nurse to serve in the war effort during World War II. She studied at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester as well as the Concord Psychiatric Hospital. Six months before completing her RN certification she left to marry her fiancé, Douglas Marshall of Lancaster, who had completed his tour of duty in the Marine Corps and was moving to Massachusetts to attend Boston University on the G.I. Bill. Throughout their 58-year marriage Doug and Lorraine were often relocated by his employer, Joseph E. Seagram & Son, and raised their family of five children in Massachusetts, Maryland, Kentucky, Indiana and New York. Once her children were grown Lorraine returned to school and received her degree from Rockland Community College in New York and went on to work at Nyack Hospital in Nyack, New York as a registered nurse. She also worked at a private nursing home in Nanuet, New York before returning with her husband to Lancaster where they retired together in 1984. Mrs. Marshall was a communicant of All Saints Catholic Church in Lancaster. She was a long-time vocalist in the church choir and a member of the Tabernacle Society until the early onset of her illness. A life-long lover of music, dance and sports, Lorraine performed live on stage, dancing with stars such as Cameron Mitchell. She and her daughter performed in concert with the Shaw Brothers and entertained at the Lancaster Alumni Association reunions on several occasions. She was a die-hard Red Sox and Patriots fan cherishing an autographed photo of Ted Williams that he signed in honor of her newborn son in 1947. Her other cherished sports item was a photo signed by the late John Unitas, star quarterback for the Baltimore Colts. Lorraine is survived by her daughter, Kathi Marshall of Jefferson; four sons Gary Marshall of Williamsburg, Va., Richard Marshall of Wappinger Falls, N.Y., Jeff Marshall of Warwick, N.Y., and Tim Marshall of Newark, Del.; as well as 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Doug, in 2003; and all her siblings, Miles Quigley Jr., Colleen McBride and Betty Quigley. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at All Saints Catholic Church in Lancaster on Thursday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m., followed immediately by a committal service at Calvary Cemetery. Rev. Raymond Ball, pastor of All Saints Church, will officiate. , 95, of St. Johnsbury, died peacefully at his home Saturday evening Aug. 8, 2009. He was born June 9, 1914, in Medford, Mass., the last surviving child of James and Ida (Fitton) Payne. He was a graduate of Springfield Technical High School in Massachusetts. During World War II he served his country in the US Air Force. Russell worked as a salesman for the Salada Tea Co. in Boston for more than 30 years covering northern New England. Following his retirement, he worked for the Caledonia County Sheriff's Department as a deputy for eight years, usually at the Caledonia County Court House. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Orleans Country Club and the St. Johnsbury Country Club. He got a hole-in-one in St. Johnsbury and was runner-up in its 1958 Presidential Cup. Following retirement he golfed Wednesdays in the Northern League. He was a 25-year member of the St. Johnsbury Coffee Clatch. Russell was an active member of the Grace United Methodist Church serving as an usher and a long time member of the Men's Bible Study Group. A deer and partridge hunter, he loved going to deer camp in Irasburg, as well as cutting fire wood at the Irasburg farm. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. After marrying Louise, Russ became a dyed-in-the-wool Vermonter. Portions of his remarkable Northeast Kingdom life were chronicled in three Vermont Life Magazine stories written by his son Stephen between 2002 and 2008. Russell is survived by his wife of 67 years, Louise (McGill) Payne of St. Johnsbury, whom he married June 27, 1942; his two sons, John Payne of Winooski, and Dr. Stephen Payne and his wife Marietta, and their children, Christopher and Meghan of St. Albans; a sister-in-law, Betty McGill, widow of J. Bishop McGill, of Stowe; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Herbert Payne; and two sisters, Ruth Lohner and Josephine Hall. A Memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, at 1 p.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church in St. Johnsbury with the Rev. John Marshall officiating. A reception will follow at the church. Burial in Passumpsic Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family. Donations made in his memory may be directed to the Russell S. , 97, of Havenwood-Heritage Heights, Concord, N.H., died Aug. 9, 2009, at Concord Hospital. She was born Dec. 14, 1911, in Hamilton, Texas, to Bert Howard Willis and Leila (Hicks) Willis. She attended the Hamilton School system and received a two-year degree from John Tarleton State College in Stephenville, Texas. She worked as a church secretary in San Angelo and Amarillo, Texas, before moving to New England, and for LaSalle Junior College and GTE Sylvania in Massachussets, during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1946 she married the Rev. Robert C. Senior in Sudbury, Mass. Together they lived in Northfield and Prospect, Conn., Honolulu, Hawaii, and resided in Massachussets for close to 40 years; most recently in Wayland, Mass., where they lived for 35 years. The Seniors spent their summers for many years in Peacham, Vt. In 1997 they moved to New Hampshire to live near family and in 2003 moved to Havenwood-Heritage Heights. She was an active member of the Memorial Congregational Church in Sudbury, Mass., for over 30 years. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Those who knew her appreciated her kind and generous personality and sense of humor. She was predeceased by her husband Robert C. Senior in 2004. Family members include her daughters, Harriet Hart of Arlington, Mass., and Rebecca Bukowski and her husband Peter of Concord, N.H.; granddaughters Amanda Hart of Cottonwood, Ariz., and Elizabeth Hart of Arlington, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews. A calling hour will be held on Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N. Main St., Concord. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at North Wayland Cemetery in Wayland, Mass. entered eternal rest on Aug. 10, 2009, after a brief illness. Bob was born on April 9, 1929, in Lynbrook, N.Y., the son of Charles and Marjorie (Dalrymple) Sager. He moved with his family to Barnet in 1945 and attended Peacham Academy where he was one of two graduates from the class of 1947. He joined the Vermont National Guard and served five years in the United States and Germany. Bob was employed by the New England Power Company for 39 years and retired as working foreman. After retiring, he enjoyed several years as lister for the town of Barnet. Bob was a past master of Pulaski Lodge #58 A F & M of Wells River. He was also a member and trustee of the First Congregational Church of McIndoe Falls. On June 5, 1953, Bob married June Blodgett who survives him. He is also survived by his three children, daughters Jayne Sager Dozois and husband Ray of Troy, N.Y., Susan Sager Mollica and husband Joseph of East Granby, Conn., and his son Brian Charles Sager and partner Kim Seymore of Bradford. Bob was blessed with seven grandchildren Andrew Davis and wife Jolene of West Burke, Technical Sgt. Michael Davis and wife Sarah of Burlington, Staff Sgt. Ryan Davis and wife Melyssa of Passumpsic, 1st Lt. Kathryn Davis Burnell and husband Marc of Greenville, N.C., Dana Sager Kistler and husband Matthew of Surf City, N.C., Nicholas Mollica Carolyn Mollica of East Granby, Conn.; and three great-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held Saturday, Aug. 15, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Sayles Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Aug. 16, at 1:30 p.m., at the McIndoe Falls Congregational Church, with the Rev. John Marshall officiating. of Berlin, Vt., (former resident of Danville, Vt.) passed away peacefully at home, at the age of 79, on Monday, Aug. 10, 2009. Henry was born on Nov. 19, 1929 in Vienna, Austria. After surviving the Holocaust, he came to the United States, when 17 years old. He joined the service and was a Korean War veteran. He is survived by a sister, Helen Hacker, of Florida; his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Gina Newman; his children, Audrey (and son-in-law, Tom) McGreevy of Waterbury, Vt., Deborah (and son-in-law, Tom) Bochenek of Leland, N.C., and Jeffrey (and daughter-in-law, Linda) Newman of Danville, Vt. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, Kristy, Jessica, Vanessa, Sean, Michael and Rebecca; and five great-grandchildren, Madison, Jacob, Brianna, Juliana and Kaleb. Henry was an avid fisherman and craftsman. He greatly enjoyed classical music and spending time with his family, especially at home cooked family meals. , 75, Littleton, N.H., died Saturday morning Aug. 8, 2009 after an extended illness. Harvey was the son of the late Harvey A. and May (Dodge) Burlock. He was a graduate of Bethlehem High School in 1952. He had worked in his earlier years at the Valley View Inn and other restaurants as a cook before becoming a carpenter. Harvey was generous to help the elderly when he was able. He was of the Methodist faith, loved the local Littleton sport teams and enjoyed playing golf. Harvey was active with the Bethlehem Heritage Society and was an avid supporter of the Bethlehem Ambulance and Fire Department. He is survived by his loving wife, Thelma Gibbs Engquist Burlock; his mother-in-law, Alice Gibbs of Littleton; his step-son, Gale and his wife Eileen Engquist of Summerfield, Fla; two daughters, Vicky and her husband David Mackay of Littleton, and Brenda Burlock of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; his sister, Bernice and her husband Brad Doane of Kennebunk, Maine; one grandchild, Harley MacKay; and a host of extended family and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Merlin, Bernard and Ralph, as well as his sisters Eva and Helen. A graveside service will be held at Glenwood Cemetery at a later date. of the New Boston Road in St. Johnsbury passed away unexpectedly Monday, Aug. 10, 2009. Mush had surgery for removal of a cancerous tumor two weeks ago and was progressing well until he took sick suddenly on Saturday. Born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., Oct. 28, 1938, he was one of seven children born to Wayne and Dorothy (Pashby) Newell. (Dorothy later remarried and carried the name Ferrier). Beside his parents, he was also predeceased by a brother Wayne. Mush loved to work on the farm and in the woods. When he was young, he worked on the family farm where he lived all his life. He later logged, worked for Gil LaCourse, and retired from Lydall Industries. Mush loved watching NASCAR racing and football, hunting and fishing, and working with his hands. He is survived by his wife Shirley (Bailey) Newell of St. Johnsbury whom he married Oct. 28, 1963; his daughter and son-in-law Sonja Newell and husband Scott Bolduc of St. Johnsbury; two grandchildren Krystal and Joshua; Scott's two children Rebekah and Tasia; three sisters: Elaine Nichols and husband Stanley of St. Johnsbury, Claire Parks and husband Martin of St. Johnsbury, Sonja Mayhew and husband John of Vernon Conn.; two brothers: Cherrill Newell and fiancée Leanne of St. Johnsbury, Millard Newell and wife Cecile of Nashua N.H.; sister-in-law Carolee Newell of Spring Hill, Fla.; Shirley's four siblings: Carol Bernier and husband Robert of Penacook N.H., Nancy Holmes and husband Jerry of Dalton N.H., Linda Rowe of Randolph, Richard Bailey and wife Debbie of Taunton, Mass.; nieces and nephews.
