, 59, of West Burke, died suddenly Saturday morning, Aug. 1, 2009, at his home. He was born June 10, 1950, in St. Johnsbury the son of Walter and Vanessa (Young) Coe. John was a graduate of Lyndon Institute. John worked construction for many years driving trucks and heavy equipment. During the last several years he drove school busses for area schools, and most recently he drove a bus for RCT out of St. Johnsbury. He enjoyed mechanics and could be found working on automobiles in his free time. He was a NASCAR race fan and followed local stock car racing as well. He is remembered for his tremendous sense of humor. Survivors include his son, Bryan W. Coe of Jacksonville, Fla.; his father and step-mother, Walter and Louise Coe of West Burke; a grandson, Keaton Coe; two sisters, Brenda Ebode and husband Emanuel of Braintree, Mass., and Annie Bullis and husband Randy of Dunbarton, N.H.; his step-family, Warren and Debbie Gorham of Kirby, Howard and Mary Gorham of Kirby, Rebecca Gardner of Lyndonville, and Connie and Greg Davis of Londonderry, N.H.; nieces; nephews; his close friend, Florence Smith of Arizona; and several close friends. He was predeceased by his mother, and a brother, Michael Coe. Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday Aug. 5, at 11 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery in West Burke with the Rev. Sue Mackay officiating.
Esther H. Renfrew

, 91, of Northfield, Vt., passed away peacefully, on July 30, surrounded by her children. Esther was born in St. Johnsbury on April 18, 1918, the daughter of Floyd and Agnes Holmes. Esther graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1937. As a young woman she loved to bike, ski, hike and camp. One of her favorite places to go since she was 5 years old was the family summer home on Miles Pond in North Concord, Vt. Esther married Clinton A. Renfrew in St. Johnsbury in 1945. They moved to Northfield in 1950, where Clinton taught at Norwich University and Esther raised four children. Esther was a very active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church for over 55 years and she belonged to the Northfield Women's Reading Circle. She was very active in the Northfield community, volunteering for cub scouts, girl scouts and the senior center. She had many passions including her art work, cooking, photography and gardening. She is survived by her four children, their families and many good friends. Her children and families are: Roger and Marilyn Renfrew from Skowhegan, Maine, and their two children, Megan and Ira; Elizabeth Renfrew Clarkson and Wayne Clarkson from Wells, Maine, and their two children, Christopher and Rebecca; Bruce and Sharon Renfrew of Pittsfield, Mass., and their two children, Gregory and Julie; Virginia Renfrew and her partner, Gail Zatz of Montpelier, and their two children, Daniel and Aaron; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, Clinton and her sister, Ruth Holmes. The family wishes to thank all of the staff at Mayo Manor and Mayo Healthcare for the wonderful care, support and friendship that Esther and her children received. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 8, at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Church in Northfield. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Steve Thompson

, age 58, passed away on July 29, 2009, unexpectedly at his home in Littleton, N.H. A native of Littleton, Steve was born on April 23, 1951, a son to Lillian Thompson, and the late Wallace Thompson. He attended local schools and was a lifelong resident of Littleton. Steve loved the outdoors, deer hunting, bird hunting, fishing, ice fishing and watching bonfires. He enjoyed spending time and visiting with his family and friends. Surviving family members include his best friend and loving wife, Denise; two daughters, Jessica, and her husband Toni Wright, and Mindy Thompson and her fiancé, David Trombley; three loving grandchildren, Tamra, Joslynn, and Nichol; one brother, Butch (Little Lil) and Paula Thompson; his sister, Carole and Chuck Estey, Allen and Kim Girard, Jo-Ann (Girard) Audette and Scott Friot, along with many nieces and nephews. Steve will be deeply missed and forever loved. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday evening, August 5th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pillsbury Funeral Home located at 101 Union Street in Littleton. Harold Wayne Prescott

, 89, died peacefully in his home in South Walden. Son of Earl and Viola Prescott, he was born in Washington, Vt., on Oct. 9, 1919, and attended school in Washington. Married Eva Waite on Sept. 14, 1940, in Washington. Prescott leaves a wife of 69 years; sons Theron Prescott and his companion Sandy of Lyndonville, Wayne and his wife Gail of Woodbury; daughter Susan and husband Steven of Hardwick; sister Rachel Rich of Northfield; grandchildren Kevin, Karen, Sally and Harold; 11 great-grand children and four great-great-grandchildren. He was employed by Hale Company, Cerco Steel, Whiting Creamery, Sam Daniels, Dessureau Machines, and Interstate Equipment. He retired from Fairbanks & Morse on Nov. 1, 1981. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his great-grandsons Kory and Kolin. He loved to help everyone and knew everyone. He was predeceased by son Chester in 1943; one brother and two sisters; and one grandson. Graveside service will be held Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at 11 a.m., at the Fairview Cemetery in Hardwick.
Fred Stills

, of Astoria, N.Y., formerly of Waterford, Vt., passed away on Sunday, Aug. 2, of lung cancer at his home with his wife and children at his side. He was 80. Fred served as a proud member of the U.S. Marines, and was involved during the latter part of the Korean conflict. He was married to his wife Randy for 35 years. They lived in Waterford for 16 years, some of the happiest years of his life. While here, he enjoyed gardening and participating in the Farmers' Market, being a member of the Waterford School Board, coaching basketball and most of all, volunteering as a member of the Waterford Fire Department, where he served as treasurer. He was also an active member and treasurer for many years at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in St. Johnsbury. Fred is survived by his wife, Randy; his four children, Eric, Robyn, Dianne and Deborah; and two grandchildren, Maya 17 and Payton 6. He will be missed by all. A Memorial Service will be held on Aug. 23 at the Church of the Redeemer, 30-14 Crescent Street in Astoria, NY (11102). , a St. Johnsbury resident, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2009, at The Pines Health & Rehab. Center. He was 79. The son of Arthur W and Clara M. (Hallett) Letourneau, he was born Dec. 2, 1929, in St. Johnsbury. He served in the U S Navy during the Korean Conflict. He married Mary Ellen Kenney July 4, 1955 in St. Johnsbury. Roland was a member of St. John's Church, serving on the Parish Counsel, was a Knight of Columbus, he coronated adoration for many years. He enjoyed the Navy reunions, hunting and hunting camp with his buddies, woodworking, boy scouts, the camp on Miles Pond, he was especially proud of his wife and family, as well as reinstating the Trade School Alumni Reunions after several missed years and then turning the records over to the St. Johnsbury Academy to be maintained. Roland is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Mary of St. Johnsbury; his four children and their spouses, Wayne (and Allison) Letourneau of Burlington, Tina (and Francis) Drake of Lebanon, N.H., Patricia (and David) Henderson of Essex Junction, Pamela (and Derrick) Fallon of Randolph; brother Lowell Letourneau of Burlington; brothers-in-law, Freddy (and Gloria) Kenney, Floyd Kenney, Stephen (and Nancy) Burgess; sisters-in-law, Marie (and Alan) Letourneau of Barton, Helen K. Bedor of Lyndonville; grandchildren, Benjamin Letourneau and fiancee Caitlin of N. Andover, Mass., Brian Letourneau and partner Katrina of Plant City, Fla., Casey, Sean, and Christina Drake of Lebanon, N.H., Chelsea and Jared Henderson of Essex Junction, Colin and Ian Fallon of Randolph, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews. Carol S. Cullen

passed away on Aug. 6, 2009, at Littleton, N.H., Regional Hospital at the age of 61 after a courageous fight against cancer. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was born in Littleton in 1948 to Maurice and Louise (Olney) Smith. She was a graduate of Lisbon Regional School in Lisbon, N.H., and attended the Hartford School of Accounting in Hartford, Conn. Upon returning from Connecticut she worked in banking and later worked for the Town of Lisbon as a bookkeeper and Town of Littleton as the Director of Planning, Assessing and Administrative Services. She enjoyed her work greatly and was a very dedicated employee. She was an avid knitter who also enjoyed reading and gardening. She could often be found crafting knitted gifts for both friends and family. She found great joy in spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and was a parishioner of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Littleton. Family members include her husband of 39 years, Daniel J. Cullen, of Littleton, N.H.; daughter Danielle Whitcomb and husband Timothy Whitcomb also of Littleton; two granddaughters, Hannah Louise and Camryn Marie; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Maurice in 1995, mother Louise in 2003 and brother Donald in 2006. Visiting hours will be on Sunday, Aug. 9, 6-8 p.m., at Ross Funeral Home in Littleton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Marcel Martel at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Littleton, on Monday August 10, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery. Arthur E. Webster

, of McIndoe Falls, passed away Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at the Pines Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lyndonville. He was 83. Mr. Webster was born June 15, 1926, in Coventry. He was the son of Lawrence and Ola (Wells) Webster. He attended schools in Coventry and Orleans. On Dec. 12, 1950, he married Laura Jean Bartlett at the Congregational Church in Newport. Arthur worked for several years at Ethan Allen Furniture in Orleans and then returned to work at the family farm. In November 1953 he and his father traded the farm for the local McIndoe Falls landmark, Webster's Store, which became known as the home of the Webby-Burger. In 1954 he joined the army. He was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, and he and Laura lived there until his discharge in 1956. Arthur and Laura have many happy memories of their 58 years together. They traveled the country, with trips to Florida, California and New York among their favorites. After Arthur's father passed away in 1976, Arthur and Laura ran the store together. He particularly enjoyed the time he spent with "the men" having coffee and donuts every morning. The store was open seven days a week for more than 50 years until they closed it in 2003. Arthur is survived by his wife, Laura Jean; his son Roland and wife Aimee of Phoenix, Ariz.; his daughter Ellyn of McIndoe Falls and Phoenix; grandchildren Keith Ingalls of St. Johnsbury and Brieanna Ingalls of McIndoe Falls; sisters Marilyn Casavant and her husband Leo of Island Pond, and Joyce Guyette and her husband Leo of Newport; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial and committal service will be held in early October at the Coventry Cemetery.

, of Morrisville, also known as Gwen I. Strout, lost her her battle with cancer on July 4, 2009. She was born in St. Johnsbury on Feb. 22, 1960. She was the daughter of Donald and Gerry Strout of West Burke. She was like a daughter to Lawrence and Eleanor Miller. She worked for the Old England Inn as a dishwasher for a few years in Stowe. Jenn enjoyed her lawn sales, loved animals and always had a cheerful smile. She volunteered for the Lamoille Area Cancer Network and loved making pizzas at their annual cancer walk. Jenn is survived by her only son, Anthony Miller. She also leaves her siblings, Myrtie Benton, Susan Strout, Diana Allen, Ruthy Vinueza, and Donald, Steve, Timothy and Daniel Strout; several aunts uncles, nieces nephews, great-nephews and a great-niece. She was predeceased by her parents Donald and Gerry Strout and her brother Percy Strout. Jenn's niece Laura provided much needed support during her long battle with cancer as did her many friends; and caregivers she thought of as family, Judy Boyce, Marilyn Carter, Navia Mcleon, Leisl Steiner, Julie Olin and Dyeanne Racette, as well as numerous others from local agencies. A memorial service will be held on Aug. 8, 2009, at the First Congregation Church in Morrisville with Rev. Dr. Marissa Laviola officiating. Robert Claron Allen

, 84, of Camels Hump Drive, Barre Town, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, at his home with his family at his bedside. Born March 3, 1925, in Barre City, he was the son of Loren H. and Garnet (Amadon) Allen. He was a Spaulding High School graduate in the class of 1943 and played on the varsity football team. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 until 1946 in the Submarine Service and had been stationed aboard the USS Irex in the Pacific Theatre. Following his military service, he received his Associates Degree at Wentworth Institute in Boston in 1948. His career began at the family business, the Allen Lumber Company in Barre in 1948. He became president of the company and continued this association until his retirement in 1991, still keeping in daily contact with his five sons who are the current management team. On June 28, 1947, he married Sylvia Watkins in Barre. Most of their married life had been spent in Barre City and later, Barre Town. They enjoyed their winter home in Rotonda West, Fla., and their cottage on Partridge Lake in Littleton, N.H., during the summer months. Sylvia died March 12, 2009, and was the love of his life. His sons and their families, woodworking, golf, fishing, maintaining his home and grounds and Partridge Lake activities were his lifetime enjoyments. Bob's memberships included the Barre Universalist Church where he had taught Sunday School in earlier years; Granite Masonic Lodge #35, Granite Chapter #26 RAM; Barre Council #22 RAND SM and St. Aldemar Commandery #11 K.T. all of Barre and Mt. Sinai Shrine Temple # 3 of Montpelier of which he was Potentate in 1972, as well as the Country Club of Barre, the Rotonda West (Florida) Country Club and Barre American Legion Post #10. He was a long time member of the Barre Rotary Club, being president in 1955 and was instrumental in establishing the Rotary Home Show at the Barre Auditorium. Other memberships included the Victory Fish and Game Club and the Partridge Lake Association. Being a highly respected businessman, he served on several boards of directors including the Northeastern Lumber Dealers Association, The Lumberman's Merchandising Corporation, The Vermont Mutual Insurance Company, The Northern Securities Company and the Granite Mutual Insurance Company. Contributing much to the civic conscience of the Barre area, he was a past president of the Barre Chapter of the American Red Cross, past manager of the Barre Santa Claus Club and received the Barre Area Junior Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award in 1958 as well as giving service to the Vermont Advisory Banking Council, the Barre Planning Commission, Barre Chamber of Commerce as a director, first director, of the Barre area Red Cross Blood Drawing and directorships on the boards of the former Barre City Hospital and the Central Vermont Medical Center. Survivors include his five sons and their spouses, Gary and Marilyn Allen, Burnie and Debbie Allen, Paul and Helen Allen and Steven and Wendy Allen, all of Barre Town, and Tom Allen and Ami Milne-Allen of St. Johnsbury; 17 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, his sister Connie Allen Calcagni and her husband, Alfred, and their family and sister-in-law Betty Reid and her family. The Service of Remembrance and Life Celebration for Bob will be held Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the Barre Universalist Church. There are no calling hours.
