Leonard T. Bilodeau
....show , 74, of Pond Hill Road, died at his home Thursday morning, September 3, 2009.
Mr. Bilodeau was born in Berlin, NH on January 30, 1935, the son of Edmond and Marie Anne (Boucher) Bilodeau.
Leonard was raised in Berlin and Jefferson. For a time he worked and resided in Nashua but for most of his life he has been railroad worker. He was first employed with Maine Central Railroad and later D & H Railroad. Between railroad jobs he was employed for a time as a boiler operator at the Mt. Washington Hotel. He has resided in Lunenburg since 1974.
He was a big Red Sox fan and enjoyed many activities such as hunting, fishing, ice fishing, and snowmobiling. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially spoiling them with Dunkin Donuts.
Family members include his wife Pauline (Sigouin) Bilodeau of Lunenburg; his son Leonard D. Bilodeau and his wife Cindy of Granby; his daughter Elaine Gain McLain of Lunenburg; 5 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Norman Bilodeau and his wife Ruth Ann of Jefferson, Ronald Bilodeau and his wife Betty of East Concord; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; a great grandson Zachary Bilodeau; a brother Francis Bilodeau; and two sisters, Theresa Boutin and Rose Anne Sigouin.
Visiting hours will be held Friday evening, September 4, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday morning at 9:00 AM at St. Leos Church, Lunenburg. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, South Lunenburg.

Virginia Clare Tucker White
....show , 96, died Thursday evening October 15, 2009, at Country Village Genesis Elder Care, Lancaster.
Mrs. White was born March 19, 1913 in Boston, MA, the only child of Frederick and Charlotte (Horan) Tucker. Her family moved back to Jefferson/Lancaster area when she was three years old.
She is a descendant of Benjamin Hicks, one of the early settlers of Jefferson, and of Emmons Stockwell, an early settler of Lancaster. Because she was the 6th
generation from Benjamin Hicks, Virginia helped raise the flag at the dedication of Jeffersons Soldiers Monument in 1920
As a child Virginia spent many happy days with her grandparents Annie and James Horan on their farm in Riverton. At the age of 92, Virginia wrote a book about her time there, entitled
Memories of Crow Hill.
She graduated from Lancaster Academy in 1931 and then attended nurses training at Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, NH, where she became a LPN. For several years she worked at the Blythewood Hospital in New Jersey as a night supervisor.
On October 8, 1940 she married her high school sweetheart Roland H. White. Early in the marriage they lived in Buffalo, NY, where Roland supported the war effort by helping build fighter airplanes. At the conclusion of the war they returned to Lancaster. Roland was employed by Geo M. Stevens Insurance Company and later became a partner in the business.
Virginia was active in her church and her childrens activities. She was a member of the All Saints Tabernacle Society and a member of the Lancaster Unity Club and DAR. She was a Girl Scout Leader and neighborhood chairman for the Girl Scouts. Many of her scouts will remember fondly her camping trips to the family cottage in Scarborough, Maine.
Her family was most important to her. She enjoyed sharing family events especially Christmas. Her grandchildren have been a great blessing to her and her constant joy. She loved being active and in later years enjoyed oil painting and crossword puzzles and watching the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics.
She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Roland; infant daughter, Patricia Lynn; and a son, Terrence.
Surviving family members include two daughters, Joan Carrier and her husband Edward of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Sharon Chamberlain and her husband Gary of Danville, VT; a daughter-in-law, Darlene White of Groveton; 7 grandchildren, Karen Degreenia, Lawrence White, Kristen Letourneau, Jeffrey Chamberlain, Kathleen Shastany, Heidi Carrier, James Carrier; 8 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; and step-grandchildren, Scott Alley, Melissa Simonelli, Stephen Alley.
A visiting hour will be held Monday morning October 19, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 AM at All Saints Church, Lancaster. Rev. Raymond Ball, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Samuel F. Evans
....show , 62, of Grove Street, died Monday morning November 2, 2009, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster.
Mr. Evans was born in Lancaster, NH on December 5, 1946, a son of Roger and Etta L. (Ramsdell) Evans.
Sam was a lifelong resident of Lancaster and was a graduate of Lancaster Academy. For a time he worked for Seawood Construction, Marro Tree and was also employed by Wausau Paper Company, retiring after 32 years.
For the past 42 years he has been an active member of the Lancaster Fire Dept. and was the Chief from 1987 until 1995. He was at one time a part time Lancaster Police Officer and worked for Inland Divers inspecting fire extinguishers. He was still called Chief and Dad by all of the fire dept. members. In 2003 Engine 2 was dedicated to him.
He enjoyed golfing, NASCAR racing and football and loved going to all of the games around New England. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking, gardening, traveling, the outdoors and going out to eat and picking on the ladies.
Family members include his wife of 42 years Donna (Cole) Evans of Lancaster, his daughter Heather Evans of Lancaster, two grandchildren, McKenna Evans and Ady Jane Evans, three sisters, Priscilla Truchon, Sylvia Aldrich and Mary Jane Falkenham all of Lancaster. He was predeceased by his son Keith Evans on August 11, 2009 and his brother Franklin Bum Evans.
Visiting hours will be held Friday evening November 6, from 6 to 9 PM at the Lancaster Fire Dept. A funeral service will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 AM at the Christ United Methodist Church in Lancaster. Reverend Ron Bruce, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be private.

Robert J. Gainer
....show , 71, of Summer Street, died Thursday morning September 3, 2009, at the Concord Hospital, Concord, NH.
Mr. Gainer was born in Lancaster on November 19, 1937, the son of Linwood J. and Emily M. (Rich) Gainer.
In 1966 he married Virginia A. Sullivan of Shoreham, VT.
Bob was a lifetime resident of Lancaster having attended Lancaster Academy and later Berlin Trade School. He worked as a truck driver all his life in the logging, construction and paper mill industries. At one time he hauled logs for Reuben Washburn and for many years drove truck for Diamond International, James River and Groveton Paper Board. For many years he worked at the Groveton Speedway for Mike Beattie. He also served with the National Guard.
For 20+ years he has been a director at the Lancaster Fair where he was superintendent of the grounds. His loyalty and commitment to the Lancaster Fair Association gave him a purpose in life these past few years.
Bob enjoyed traveling, casinos, and playing cards with his family and friends. He was also an avid NASCAR fan.
His loving family members include his devoted and loving wife of 43 years Virginia of Lancaster; a daughter, Jill M. Gainer of Manchester, NH; three sons, James Gainer and his wife Tricia, Joel Gainer and Jon Gainer all of Lancaster; a brother Richard and wife Katherine of Lancaster; a sister Carol (Gainer) Beaudoin and husband Edward of Contoocook; a grandson and granddaughter; many nieces, nephews, cousin, and many, many friends.

Ronald A. Gardner
....show , beloved husband of D. Jeannine (Emerson) Gardner, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, September 15, 2009, in Whitefield following a long illness.
Ronald was born on May 16, 1932, in Morgan, VT, the son of Roy E. and Audrey H. (Powell) Gardner.
He was educated in the Newport, VT, public schools until his senior year in High school, He graduated from Owego Free Academy in Owego, NY.
On April 8, 1951 he married Jeannine Emerson who survives him. Four children were born to them, three of whom survive: Dana R. (wife Karen) of Tiverton, RI; Laurel Gardner of Tewksbury, MA: Glenn R. Gardner (wife Lori Jo) of Littleton, NH. A daughter, Ronni Jean Fedele pre-deceased Ronald in 2002. There are eight grandchildren, Heather, Andrea, Allison, Jacklyn, Aaron, Isaac, Cassady and Reannan; four great-grandchildren, Mia, Ronni Brynn, Brien and Aaden.
Ron is also survived by his sister, Juanita Fugere of Newport, VT, and many nieces and nephews. Four brothers and a sister predeceased him; Lyndon, Malcolm, Russell, Dorian (Huck) and Gwendolyn Mesler.
Ronald was a member of the Vermont Army National Guard from 1950 to 1952. In 1956 he joined the U. S. Border Patrol, training at the Border Patrol Academy then located in El Paso, Texas. Upon graduation, he was stationed at Laredo, Texas, for three years. In 1959 he was transferred to Buffalo, NY where he served as station Senior for eight years. In 1967 he transferred to the U. S. Immigration and Naturalization Service and was station in Derby Line, VT. He also served at the Beebe Plain, VT, border station where he was well known and regarded, especially by the young people of the area who looked up to him and appreciated his interest in them as he counseled them to achieve their very best in life.
In 1986 he was selected to be Area Port Director of Immigration at Stations Rout 91, Route 5 (Derby Line), Beebe Plain, Norton, and North Troy with his office at Route 91 Derby Line Port of entry.
He served with distinction, receiving awards for outstanding service until his retirement in 1994. In 1992, he received the Commissioners Equal Employment Opportunity Award for encouraging and assisting employees to develop to their full potential as evidenced by integrating women and people with disabilities, successfully into the unit. He received this award at the Commissioners Annual Awards Ceremony in Phoenix, AZ.
He always did his best and encouraged others to achieve excellence in all their endeavors. He favorite admonition to others was to Think, think, think: (before you act).
Ronald was a master carpenter having learned the trade as a teen-ager and young man helping his father build houses and barns in the Newport-Derby area. He built his own home and barn on the Beebe Road (now Darling Hill Road) in 1968.
The family raised Angus beef cattle and boarded horses for several years. An accomplished horseman, Ron raised and trained his own registered Palomino and enjoyed hours riding him.
He was an avid gardener, always having an enviable vegetable garden. His first gardening love, however, was his prize rose bushes, 20 30 of them at any given time. These and his vegetables he shared with many.
A memorial service will be held at the Community Baptist Church, Whitefield, Sunday afternoon, September 27, at 2:00 PM. Reverend Clifford Vendt, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow at a later date in the Gardner Family plot in Derby Center Cemetery, Derby, VT.

Catherine "Kay" S. Noyes
....show , 75, of Meadows Road, died Tuesday evening September 8, 2009, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon.
Mrs. Noyes was born in Whitefield, NH on August 31, 1934 a daughter of Stephen and Belle (Walker) Sheridan.
Kay was a lifetime resident of Jefferson and was a 1952 graduate of Lancaster Academy. For a time she worked at the Spaulding Inn in Whitefield and for over 25 years she was employed by the White Mountain Regional School District where she worked in the kitchen. In her spare time she made wedding cakes.
She was a member of the Jefferson Adult Citizens, the Jefferson Chorus and when her children were in school she was a member of the PTA.
Family members include her husband of 56 years Donald E. Noyes of Jefferson, a daughter Dawn Susan Miller and her husband Marc of Jefferson, two sons, Stephen Noyes of Jefferson and Tim Noyes and his wife Jill also of Jefferson, her grandson Adam Noyes of Jefferson two granddaughters, Shannon and Baillie Knecht of Lancaster and several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Robert Sheridan and Stephen Sheridan, four sisters Nellie Ingerson, Phyllis Smith, Bertha Hatfield and Isabelle Sharkey predeceased her.

Norman N. Roy
....show , 64, of South Lunenburg Road, died suddenly near his home, Monday evening, September 14, 2009.
Mr. Roy was born in Lunenburg on January 17, 1945, the son of Ovila N. and Mabel H. (Blood) Roy.
Norman was a lifetime resident of Lunenburg and graduate of Concord High School. For 23 years he was employed with Campbell Envelope and Stationery and later worked another 10 years at Burndy in Littleton. For a short time he was employed at Lydall, St. Johnsbury.
He enjoyed many things in life including motorcycle riding, deep-sea fishing, snowmobiling, four wheeling, and card games like poker and blackjack. His greatest enjoyment was traveling which took him to many US states and various countries of the world.
Family members include four brothers, George Roy, Clayton Roy both of Lunenburg, Ernest Roy of Maidstone, Albert Roy of Lunenburg; six sisters, Yvonne Henderson of Lunenburg, Jeannette Thompson of Mechanicsville, Virginia, Florence Colby of Lunenburg, Irene Chase of Littleton, Vernabelle Ingerson of Lisbon, Arlene Baird of Tucson, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.

Richard Alwin Steudle
....show , 76, of Button Road, died Friday morning September, 11, 2009, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster.
Mr. Steudle was born in Warren, Michigan, on April 16, 1933, the son of Martin and Selma (Miller ) Steudle.
He was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Warren, Michigan, Adrian College, Adrian, Michigan, where he earned his bachelors degree, and the University of Michigan earning his masters degree in School Administration.
Richard's entire career was devoted to education, he started as a teacher and later high school principle in Clinton, Michigan. He was also the Superintendent of Schools in Capac, Michigan, Charity Hill, Michigan, and Muskegon, Michigan. He received several awards during his Michigan career and was a past president of the Michigan Association of School Administrators and a 35 year Rotarian President of the United Way in Muskegon, Michigan.
After moving to New Hampshire he was Superintendent of Schools in Berlin for ten years and was interim superintendent of schools for the Northwoods District, Gorham and White Mountain Regional High School.
For a time he owned and operated the Little House B&B in Jefferson. He was a past Board Member and Vice President of the Board for Weeks Medical Center. Richard loved boating on Lake Michigan and Lake St. Clair, Michigan.
Family members include his wife Mary (Oleson) Steudle of Jefferson; seven children, Sue Steudle of Owosso, Michigan, Master Chief James Steudle and his wife Mary of Cape May, NJ, Lee Dawson and her husband Scott of Keller, Texas, Kristie Westendorf and her husband Karl of Boyde, Texas, Jennifer Green and her husband Benjamin of St. Paul, Minnesota, Anne Langlois and her husband Craig of Gorham, Joshua Poisson and his wife Heather of Berlin; seventeen grandchildren, Cory, Clay, Kelly, Savannah, Ridge, Will, Caroline, Jack, Anne, Grace, Finbarr, Julia, Gabriel, Isaac, Ella, Owen J., Owen C.; his first wife Shirley Steudle, two brothers, Martin Steudle and his wife Peggy of Oxford, Michigan, David Steudle of Warren, Michigan; and three sisters, Helen Decker of Pigeon, Michigan Alene Klosky of Roseville, Michigan, and Sharon Curd and her husband Harvey of Warren, Michigan and a sister-in-law Jean Steudle of Adrian, Michigan. He was predeceased by his parents; and three siblings, Herbert Steudle, Elsie Prichard and Louise Hinks.

Alan D. Allen
....show , 57, of Cherry Street, died suddenly Sunday morning October 4, 2009, at his home.
Mr. Allen was born in Hanover, NH, on June 14, 1952, the son of John and Evelyn (Howe) Allen.
Alan was a graduate of Lamoille High School. For many years he resided in Stratham, NH, and worked for Data General in Portsmouth.
He was the Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge #1831 of Littleton, NH. He was also a member of the Eagles.
Alan enjoyed hanging out with friends and family, playing darts and fishing.
Surviving family members include his foster mother, since he was 11 years old, Dorothy Hutchins of Whitefield; brothers and sisters, Fred Allen of Camp Verde, AZ, Virginia Durphy of Windsor, VT, Joanne Nealie of Canaan, NH, Shelby Colbourn of South Strafford, VT, Adrian (Peanut) Allen of Enosburg Falls, and Jeannine Welsh Russell of Massachusetts. He was predeceased by his foster father Archie Hutchins; a sister Patricia Allen of Bridgewater and a brother John Allen of Quechee.
A visiting hour will be held Saturday afternoon, October 10, from 12:00 to 1:00 at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A funeral service will be held immediately afterward at 1:00 PM. Rev. Richard Phillips of Littleton, will officiate. An Elks service will be held at the funeral home following the funeral service. Burial will be held at a later date in the Hartford Cemetery, Hartford, VT.

Vincent E. Bell
....show passed away on Oct. 22, 2009 at the Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield, NH.
Mr. Bell was born June 13, 1922 at the Morrison Hospital in Whitefield, NH. His parents where Carl N. Bell and Grace Penney. He had three brothers Maurice Bell, Clinton Bell, and a younger brother Harold Bell. All of who have predeceased him.
In 1942, at the age of twenty-two, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and did his basic training in Macon, GA. After basic training he was assigned to the 11th
Air Force and sent to the Aleutian Islands to fight in the Pacific Theater. At the end of World War II he came back to Lunenburg to work as a mechanic and was married in December 23, 1945 to Rita Powell.
He lived most of his life as a resident of Lunenburg. He was employed in the Gilman Paper Mill, owned a chainsaw business, and was a licensed electrician. He loved his family, hunting, fishing, skiing, gardening, and just being outdoors.
Vincent leaves behind his devoted wife of 63 years, Rita Bell of Lunenburg, VT. He also departs from his five children and their spouses; Daniel Bell and Mary (Quimby) of Wheelock, VT, Diane and Bruce Thomas of Lunenburg, VT, Anna and Carl Lavallee of Monkton, VT, Mary Lou and Gary Ingalls of Lunenburg, VT, and Amos and Dolores (Couture) Bell also of Lunenburg. He has thirteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday morning October 26th
at 11:00 AM at St. Leos Church in Lunenburg, VT. Father Patrick Foreman, pastor, will officiate. Burial with Military honors will follow in the Calvary Cemetery in Lancaster, NH. After the committal service a luncheon will be offered at the All Saints Parish hall in Lancaster, NH.

Kathy Marie Bishop
....show , 47, passed away Friday morning October 30, 2009, at the Country Village Genesis Elder Care, Lancaster after a long battle with Huntingtons Disease with her family by her side.
Ms. Bishop was born in Lancaster on January 11, 1962, a daughter of Robert and Nancy Ann (Hurlbert) Bishop.
Kathy was a raised in Lancaster and was a graduate of White Mountain Regional High School. For 14 years she worked at Country Village Nursing Home, where she took pride in her work. She was a wonderful mother who loved her son and grandson with all of her heart.
She enjoyed taking walks and loved to go to the fair.
Family members include her father and stepmother Robert Bishop and Cathy of Lancaster, her two sons Joshua Bishop and his companion Caresse of Whitefield and James Robert Strickland also of Whitefield, a grandson Dakota Bishop, her brother Mike Bishop and his wife Della, her sister Kelly Bishop and step-sisters Paula Dunn and her husband Robert and Wendy Stuart all of Lancaster and nieces, nephews and cousins. Her mother predeceased her.

Murray C. Hodgdon
....show , 78, died October 20, 2009 at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster.
Mr. Hodgdon was born in Concord, Vermont on July 13, 1931 a son of Sullings and Jennie (Wilson) Hodgdon.
Murray was raised in Granby, VT and was a 1949 graduate of Lyndon Institute. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. For a time he worked construction, owned and operated a convenience store and gas station where he did small engine repair and for 30 years he operated a rubbish removal business. He was also a former side judge and tax collector. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #82 in Gorham.
Family members include his wife Naomi (Hurlbutt) Hodgdon of Guildhall, a son Vaughn Hodgdon and his wife Dorothy of Guildhall; three grandchildren Stephen Hodgdon and his wife Lisa of Danville, VT, Jennifer Poulton and her husband Kevin of Littleton and John Hodgdon and his wife Nicole of Granby, VT, 6 great grandchildren, Zoe, Makenna, K-Leigh, Kasen, Windsor and Tyson, a brother Fredrick Hodgdon of Granby, VT and a sister Barbara Brown of Granby. A brother Donald Hodgdon and a sister Vivian Brown predeceased him.

Raymond F. Neal
....show , 67, of Whitefield Road, died on Sunday, October 18, 2009 at his home with his family by his side.
Mr. Neal was born in Baltimore, Maryland on October 15, 1942 a son of Clarence and Geraldine (Bloss) Neal.
Raymond served in the US Army in Vietnam and was a truck driver for most of his life, owning his own rig, a lifes dream for him, and most recently for Stiles Fuel. He was a member of the Masons and was once an officer for the Whitefield Police Dept. In 1989, he was inducted into the South Baltimore Softball Hall of Fame, as were his father and brother prior to that. He was infamous for his softball reputation and he even played against the King and his Court in 1989. He enjoyed hunting with his granddaughter, Amanda, and was teaching his granddaughter, Kristy, to drive. Family was everything to Raymond.
Family members include his wife of 33 years Patricia (Lee) Neal of Dalton, his daughter Tracy Jillie and two granddaughters, Kristy and Amanda Stiles of Whitefield. He also leaves two brothers Cookie Neal of Zephyrillis, FL and Darrell Neal of Inwood, W. Virginia. He is predeceased by two brothers Clarence (Huck) Neal and Gilbert Neal.

....show , 87, formerly of Faraway Road, died Wednesday evening, October 28, 2009 at the Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield.
Mrs. Packard was born on August 13, 1922 in Hopkinton, New Hampshire a daughter of Albert and Florence C. (Bean) Provencher.
Marion was raised in Contoocook and attended Keene State University earning a bachelors degree and the University of Vermont where she acquired a masters degree in teaching. She practiced taught in Dalton and was hired for her first teaching position in Whitefield. She took time off to raise her family and returned to teaching in Lancaster and the White Mountain Regional High School where she taught home economics. In 1974 she was awarded NH Home Economics Teacher of the Year presented by the American Home Economics Association and Family Circle Magazine. She retired in 1984.
She was a Communicant of St. Matthews Church, Whitefield. Memberships include the Retired Teachers Association, the Catholic Daughters, Daughters of the American Revolution, the NH League of Craftsman Association and the Future Homemakers of America.
Marion was an avid hiker and a juried weaver.
Family members include two sons, Charles J. Packard of Dalton, Peter G. Packard of Whitefield; two daughters, Loretta Grace of Concord, NH, Katharine Blodgett of Worchester, MA; a sister Nina Healy of Shrewsbury, MA; 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Her husband Clare H. Packard predeceased her in 2008.

Mr. Raymond was born in Concord, NH on September 8, 1964 the son of John Viator and Sharelle (Farrah) Allin.
John was raised in Stratford and has been a resident of the Lancaster and Jefferson area for the past 27 years. He owned and operated JAR Auto in Jefferson. He was well known for his kindness and the willingness to always lend a hand.
He loved hunting and fishing and had a very special place in his heart for Danny, Michael and his nephew JR. He especially treasured his time spent with his girls and grandchildren.

Mrs. Cloutier was born in Lancaster on February 16, 1929 a daughter of Laurence and Rena (Pierce) Smith.
Arlene was raised in Lancaster and was a graduate of Lancaster Academy. After graduation she moved to Groveton and was a resident for many years. She returned to Lancaster where she has resided for the past few years. She worked for Diamond International Paper Co. retiring in 1991.
She enjoyed driving around in her car looking for wildlife, going out to eat, bingo, crocheting and was a big fan of NASCAR Racing enjoying a trip to a race in Loudon, NH. Her favorite driver was Kenny Schrader. Spending time with family was her greatest enjoyment.
Family members include three nieces, Cynthia Ledger of Groveton, Linda Maguire and her companion Daniel Roy of Alton and Sandra MacKillop and her companion Stanley Skinner of Whitefield, her nephew David Currier and his wife Janice of Lancaster and several great nieces and nephews; several great-great nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins. She loved all of them as if they were her own children. Her husband Rosario and her 3 sisters Marion Smith, Doreen Smith and Lorraine Currier predeceased her.

Barbara was raised in Whitefield and graduated from Whitefield High School in 1953. For 30 years she and her husband owned and operated the Water Wheel Sugar House. She enjoyed cooking, had a great sense of humor and loved her children, grandchildren and anyone else she could mother.
She was a past member of the Rebeccas.

Rena Coulter
....show , 94, died at her daughters home in Soldotna, Alaska, Saturday November 7, 2009. She was born and raised in Jefferson the daughter of Clara and Wyeth Holmes. In 1935 she married George Coulter and they built a home in Randolph where she lived most of her life.
Rena worked at the Gorham School Lunch Program from 1954-1957 and then relocated to Concord, NH and worked at the Christian Science Home as a baker for 18 years. In 1975 she retired and moved back to her home in Randolph. She traveled to Alaska in 1977 for one year to work as a baker in her son-in-law and daughters restaurant, Gwins Lodge, Cooper Landing, Alaska.
She had many hobbies and was always busy, working in her flower gardens, braiding rugs, sewing, knitting, and spending time with her church group, and loved to "Go to Lunch!"
Family members include two sons, Lawrence Coulter and wife Helen of Jefferson, Dean Coulter and wife Eileen of Dalton; one daughter, Louise Dubois of Alaska; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Iris Holden of Gorham, Esther McLain of Weare, NH; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband George Coulter; one son G. Grant Coulter; two sisters, Susan Levack of Laconia, Sylvia Reed of Randolph; and one brother Clyde Holmes of Jefferson.

Mrs. Desjardins was born in Groveton on July 15, 1921, a daughter of Marion Bruce Eastwood and Hazel (Rice) Eastwood.
Elinor graduated from Lancaster Academy in 1939. She worked for many years as a Lab Technician, working at the Morrison Hospital in Whitefield, Weeks Memorial Hospital and the Suncoast Hospital in Clearwater, FL. She attended WWII Army reunions with her husband across Europe and the United States.
Her interests included reading, crossword puzzles, collecting frogs and at one time she was on a bowling league.
She was a Communicant of St. Matthews Church in Whitefield.
Family members include her four children Peter J. Desjardins and his wife Marlene, Lynne D. Nolet and her husband Robert, the Honorable Paul D. Desjardins and his wife Rodie and Anthony B. Desjardins and his wife Constance, 15 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her husband Emile S. Desjardins, her sister Carol McDonald and her brother Robert Eastwood predeceased her.

Chester L. Eaton
....show , 73, of Auburn Star Farm, died of sudden illness at his home Sunday morning November 1, 2009.
Mr. Eaton was born in Windsor, Vermont, on March 5, 1936, a 12th descendant of the Mayflower passenger Francis Eaton and son of Maurice Chester Eatonand Beatrice (Webster) Eaton Hull.
Chester was a raised in Hartland, VT, and attended Hartland grade schools. He was a 1954 graduate of Windsor High School. He has been a devoted farmer all his life and for 35 years he operated a dairy farm in Hartland. In 1978 the farm was incorporated to become Auburn Star Farm, Inc. While there he was actively involved in many civic duties serving as selectman, school director, and was on the Hartland Planning Commission for 20 years.
In 1986 he and his family moved to Lunenburg, VT, purchasing the old Weeks Farm. He never retired and continued his farm work there until the day of his death.
He was a founding member of the Vermont Land Trust serving 20 years in Hartland.
Hobbies included anything Chester could do outdoors like farming, gardening,mowing lawns and cutting wood. He enjoyed time with lifelong and new friends who have helped him and his family through many, many, good times.
Surviving family members include his wife of 52 years, Lorna I. (Maxfield) Eaton of Lunenburg; two sons Conan L. Eaton and his wife Maureen and Brad C. Eaton and his wife Sharon all of Lunenburg; six grandchildren, Cathy
Williams, Dan Eaton, Chad Eaton, Samantha Russo, Shane Eaton, Luke Eaton; four great-grandchildren; five siblings, Myrtle Johnson of Putney, VT, Jacki Foss and Jay Hull both of Morrisville, VT, Howard Hull of Lillian, Alabama, Carol Johnson of Fort Myers, Florida; two special cousins Andrea and numerous nieces and nephews. A son Thad L. Eaton predeceased him.

....show passed away peacefully on Monday 11-09-09 in her home at the McKee Inn in Lancaster. She was born on October 10, 1920 the daughter of Albert Edwin and Gladys (Garron) Titius on Briar Island in West Port Nova Scotia. She was the wife of the late Paul N. Howell and the late George T. Graber.
During her career she served as an assistant to the Registrar at Gordon College, as an auditor for the Internal Revenue Service and as a contract administrator for the Unites States Government at the Defense Contract Administration Agency. After marrying George in 1969 she relocated to the Lancaster area and was a medical secretary at the Weeks Medical Center for a number years until retiring to Lunenburg VT.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, The American Legion Auxiliary and the Professional Business Womens Organization. She belonged to the Lancaster Congregational Church and was active in the seniors programs at Colonel Town Community Center. She loved to travel and enjoyed hooking rugs with friends in the area The Hookers.
She is survived by her children and stepchildren: Nancy Goldman and husband Charles of Haverhill MA; Paul Howell and wife Loretta of Peabody MA; Edwin Howell and wife Erin of St. Paul MN; Donald Tibbetts and wife Susan of Blyth CA; Tom Graber and wife Laurie of Lancaster CA; and Katrina Tina Whipple and husband Perley of Bethlehem NH. She had 17 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husbands, two brothers predeceased her: Albert Titus and Victor Titus.
There are no visiting hours.
A memorial service will be held Saturday November 21, at 11:00 AM, at the Lancaster Congregational United Church of Christ.

Cynthia was born in Gardiner, Maine, on June 19, 1938, the daughter of Manton and Esther (Annis) Emerson.
She grew up in South Gardiner, Maine, where she graduated from Gardiner High School in 1959, moving to Lancaster in 1960. During her life she has worked at various hotels throughout New England and Florida. For the last several years The Nan was employed at Santas Village in Jefferson. She enjoyed traveling and loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren.
Family members include four sons, William Bucklin Jr. of Manchester, Steven Hammond of California, Kevin Hammond of Lancaster, Shawn Hammond of Brattleboro; two daughters, Laurie Comings of Lancaster, Karen White of Germany; two brothers Richard Emerson of Augusta, Maine, William Manton Emerson of Idaho; two sisters, Elaine Melvin of Litchfield, Maine, Brenda McFarland of Connecticut; 13 grandchildren, Aaron, Alicia, Abby, Hillary, Brianna, Brooke, Jessy, Maddy, Katrina, Raymond, Kensley, Matthew, Makaila; 2 great-grandchildren, Kya and Lily; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter Lisa Smith in 2006.

Virginia Morse Savage
....show , 88, died November 18, 2009, at the home of her daughter in Underhill, VT.
Jini was born on October 8, 1921, in Lancaster, the youngest child of Charles and Mary (Brainard) Morse.
She was raised in Lancaster and was a graduate of Lancaster Academy and on February 21, 1946 she married Leonard Savage of Lancaster. She went on to work as a telephone operator and later joined the WACs during WWII spending six months in Texas. She later worked as a cook at the Morse Lodge in Lancaster, now known as Joshuas, and eventually became the owner. She loved to cook and was noted for her pastries, rolls, and fudge. Another love was antiques, auctions and attending flea markets and yard sales. When she and Leonard retired they enjoyed their years going to auctions and fairs.
She is survived by Leonard and their two children; a daughter, Mary Jo Berube and her partner Phil Bovia of Underhill; a son Alan Savage and his wife Joanne of Lancaster; two grandsons, John (Gail) and Jason (Tamara); and three great-grandchildren, Christopher, Ryan, and Rebekah. She was predeceased by her sister, Josephine Swan and half brother Richard Morse.
Jini also leaves three nieces and one nephew. The Swan girls always came to visit over Columbus weekend to celebrate her birthday.
Visitation is private. A graveside service will be held Saturday afternoon, November 21, at 2:00 PM in Summer Street Cemetery, Lancaster.

....show , 90, died Saturday morning, November 21, 2009 at the Lafayette Center in Franconia after a brief illness.
Mrs. Sheridan was born in Jefferson on June 5, 1919 a daughter of Frederick Willoughby and Marjorie Izatt.
Dorothy married Philip Edward Sheridan on March 29, 1935 and had three children. She was a Nurses Aide who fulfilled her dreams by pursuing a career as a Licensed Practical Nurse, attending school at the Berlin Technical College during her 50s to earn her degree. She worked for the Jefferson and Lancaster nursing homes. She was always known for working 16 hours daily between her job and housework.
She spent the last 30 years of her life caring for her grandson Patrick Sheridan.
Family members include her children, Philip Sheridan Jr. and his wife Alma, Barbara Sheridan Boudle and her husband Ernest and Dennis Sheridan and his wife Dorothea, a sister Marion Dupont, 8 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. Her husband Philip and her grandson Patrick predeceased her.

....show , 66, died Tuesday November 17, 2009, at the Littleton Regional Hospital.
Mr. York was born in Syracuse, New York on September 8, 1943, the son of Emerson and Marjorie (Fisher) York.
John was a resident of Dalton for 31 years. For several years he served on the Dalton Fire Department, the Dalton Conservation Commission and was also the past sexton for the town cemeteries.
He was an avid reader and loved spending time at his camp in Maine.

Edwin R. Ashby
....show , 82, of Israels River Road, died Thursday December 31, 2009 at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster.
Mr. Ashby was born in New Loudon, NH, on October 3, 1927, the son of Ralph E. and Rosiana (Vailancourt) Ashby.
Edwin had a long military career spanning many years. He first served several years with the US Navy and then 20 years with the US Air Force. He was a highly decorated three war veteran involved with many divisions of the military including the Sea-Bees, Underwater Demolition Team, Scout & Raiders, Navy Seals and was also a Navy Frogman. His duty included a tour in the Pacific Theater during WWII and he worked with missile systems while in the Air Force. After his military retirement he worked as a lineman for Verizon telephone.
He was a lifetime member of VFW and American Legion having served as past district and Post Commander of the VFW. He was also a Third Degree member of the Odd Fellows.
Ed has received several awards from Veterans Associations and community service programs for his diligent efforts to support local programs and raise money.
Family members include his wife Marilyn (Robinson) Ashby of Jefferson; two sons Scott E. Ashby of Hill, NH, Paul R. Ashby of Interlachen, FL; a daughter, Lynn R. Abramovich of Monroe, NC; 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Dale V. Ashby and James R. Ashby, predeceased him.

Beverly was born in Lunenburg on November 26, 1926, the daughter of Howard and Eulelia (Bryant) Perkins. She was the loving wife of Gardner H. Balch Sr. who predeceased her in 2006.
She was the loving mother of six children, Gardner H. Balch Jr. of Lunenburg, Sharon E. Thurston of Guildhall, Stephen M. Balch of Hinsdale, Howard C. Balch of Winston-Salem, NC, Lee D. Balch of Lunenburg, Dianthe G. Charron of Tampa, Florida; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Winonna Wood of Winchendon, MA. A granddaughter, Desiree Balch also predeceased her.

Mrs. Chase was born in Lancaster on July 20, 1957, the daughter of Raymond Sam and Ramona (Noyes) Baird.
She was raised in Lancaster and was a graduate of White Mountain Regional High School. She has resided most of her life in the North Country but did spend 10 years in Alaska. For many years she was employed as a waitress at the Double SS Restaurant, Lancaster. She also worked for Ethan Allen in Beecher Falls.
Linda enjoyed being a full time grandmother and was actively involved with her grandchildrens activities with 4-H, Groveton Athletics and horsemanship. She also enjoyed crafts.
Family members include her husband Chris Chase of Colebrook; two sons Jeremy Burke and Chris Burke both of Groveton; her mother Ramona Baird of Whitefield; three step-children, Bradley and Stephen Chase of Beecher Falls, Lisa Chase of Stewartstown; three grandchildren, Makenna Burke, Caleb Burke, Courtney Burke; a step-grandson Jaron OKeefe; three sisters, Julie Towle of Florida, Roberta Jordan of Auburn, Melanie Baird of Ashland; and her number one companion, her Pomeranian Chippy. Her father Sam predeceased her.

Karen Anne (Bailey) DeGroat
....show , 40, of Lewis Hill Road, died Sunday, December 27, 2009, in Lancaster.
Karen was born in Manchester on April 29, 1969, the daughter of Ronald N. and Carol Anne (Stone) Bailey.
She was a 1988 graduate of White Mountain Regional High School and a 1992 Graduate of Lyndon State College where she received her teaching degree. At her high school she was a former member of SADD. Other former memberships include Lyndon State Rescue and Americorp. In 1998 Karen was employed at the Mountain Club at Loon where she met her husband of ten years John DeGroat. She and John were in the foster parenting program.
She was a parishioner of the Lancaster Congregational United Church of Christ.
Surviving family members include her husband John DeGroat of Bethlehem; her parents Ronald and Carol Binky Bailey of Lancaster; two brothers, Kevin N. Bailey of Lancaster, Kolin M. Bailey and his wife Heather of Lancaster; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A funeral service will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 AM at the Lancaster Congregational United Church of Christ. Rev. David Pendleton and Rev. Virginia Alvarez, pastor, will officiate. Committal services will be held at a later date.

LANCASTER -
Thomas P. Gratton
....show , 76, died Monday morning December 21, 2009, at Country Village Genesis Health Care Center, Lancaster.
Mr. Gratton was born in Minneapolis, MN, on February 24, 1933, the son of Francis Xavier and Helen Catherine (Eisenkramer) Gratton.
Tom was raised in Minneapolis and went on to serve 20 years with the US Air Force. During his military career he served in Vietnam as an air rescue helicopter medic and on the 16th
Special Operation C-130 Gunships. He retired from the military in 1972 and resided in Florida where he was employed for many years as an Oriental rug sales representative. He moved to New Hampshire in 1995 residing in Twin Mountain for two years before moving to Lancaster.
Memberships include the Lancaster VFW and the Loyal Order of Moose in Florida. He was a volunteer at the Twin Mountain Fish & Game. Fishing was a favorite pastime.
Family members include a sister Susan Murry and her husband Jerry of Ham Lake, MN. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister Barbara Gerjets.
Visiting hours will be held Wednesday evening, January 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday morning, January 7, at 11:00 AM at All Saints Church, Lancaster. Rev. Raymond Ball, pastor, will officiate. Burial with military honors will be held in the spring in Calvary Cemetery, Lancaster
JEFFERSON/YORKTOWN, VA -
Edward Kent Hicks
....show , 71, passed away Monday, December 21, 2009, with his family at his side.
Mr. Hicks was born in Jefferson on August 24, 1938, the son of Clayton and Patricia (Thayer) Hicks.
Kent was a native of Jefferson were he was raised and graduated from Lancaster Academy. After graduation he enlisted in the US Navy. He retired as a Lt. Commander from the US Navy in 1984, after 28 years of faithful service to his country. After retirement he summered in Jefferson and spent winters in Virginia.
He was a man with the amazing ability to remember names and faces. That ability was because he truly enjoyed people and was a real friend, one that you wanted to stay in touch with and one who genuinely concerned for you. He had a love for the outdoors that was passed on to his grandchildren and extended family of nieces and nephews.
Surviving family members include his wife of 44 years, Ann (Smith) Hicks; a daughter Pamela Medford and her husband Mark; a son Scott Hicks and his wife Jennifer all of Yorktown, VA; 5 brothers and 2 sisters, Clayton Hicks of Plymouth, Wanda LaCasse of Berlin, John Hicks of Virginia Beach, VA, Forrest Hicks of Jefferson, William Hicks of Whitefield, Bruce Hicks and Jennifer Foster both of Jefferson. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Mariah and Matthew Medford and Benjamin and Jacob Hicks; and 26 nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held Monday afternoon and evening, December 28, from 3:00 to 5:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated Tuesday morning at 10:00 AM, at All Saints Church in Lancaster. Rev. Raymond Ball, pastor, will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Jefferson. The family will also receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 PM on Saturday, January 2, in the Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, VA.

Howard Kenneth "Bud" Ripley Jr.
....show , 71, of Hall Road, died Sunday morning December 13, 2009, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster.
Mr. Ripley was born in Berlin, NH, on August 6, 1938, the son of Howard Kenneth Ripley Sr. and Olive Walker Collins Ripley.
Mr. Ripley worked 25 years of his life as a tractor-trailer driver for various companies in Colorado and Utah. Later in life he was a self-employed auto mechanic. For many years he was a resident in the Claremont area but has resided in Maidstone for the past several years.
Bud enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and boating. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Claremont.
Family members include his wife Ruth P. (Patridge) Ripley of Maidstone; a daughter Joyce Barr of Rochester, NY; six stepchildren, Dianne Chambers and her husband Ernest of Charlestown, Wauneta Hurd and her husband Rodney of Lempster, Robin Westney and her husband Dan of Claremont, Gloria Irons and her husband Robert of Port Orange, FL, Michelle Rumrill and her husband Rodney of Charlestown, Michael Walch and his wife Annette of Lempster; 22 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a step-father Arthur Collins of Lancaster; a sister Irene Bisson of Concord, NH; an aunt Pauline Emery of Lancaster; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; three siblings, Elaine Hastings, Barbara Smally, and Donald Collins.
There are no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held Friday afternoon, December 18, at 1:00 PM at the Lancaster Assembly of God Church, North Main Street, Lancaster. Rev. James Michaels, pastor, will officiate.

Shirley M. Truland
....show , 79, of Summer Street, died Thursday evening, December 31, 2009, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon.
Mrs. Truland was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on October 21, 1930, the daughter of Raymond and Vivian (Moran) Moulton.
She was the wife of the late Daniel J. Truland who predeceased her in 2007.
Shirley was a long time nurse having worked at Weeks Memorial Hospital and Kent Nursing Home both in Lancaster. She also worked as a private duty nurse. Her hobbies included making baskets and quilts. She also had a love for animals and enjoyed feeding birds and squirrels and was always taking care of stray animals.
Family members include four sons: Kevin Truland and his wife Colleen of Lancaster, Bruce Truland and his wife Yao of Lancaster, Earl Truland and his wife Sharon of Riverhead, NY, Alan Truland of Dalton; three daughters, Lynnette Siteman and her husband Frank, of Winchester, MA, Maureen Rainault husband Gil of Guildhall, VT, and Kathy Truland of Lancaster; ten grandchildren, Jacob Cote and wife Lindsay, Jonathan Ingerson, Jason Truland and wife Kelly, Ben and his wife Koryn Ingerson, Taylor Ingerson, Jordan and her husband Jason Chester, Matt Truland, Jillian Bessette, Tyler Grieves, Genna Truland, Shirley Patricia Truland; great-granddaughter, Lillian Ingerson and two more great-grandchildren to come. Her brother, Fredrick Moulton of Pennsylvania and a sister-in-law, Sister Maureen Truland of Clyde, Missouri also survive her. Her parents and her stepmother Hazel Moulton also predeceased her.
Visiting hours will be held Sunday afternoon, January 3, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday morning at 10:00 AM at All Saints Church, Lancaster. Rev. Raymond Ball, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the spring in Calvary Cemetery, Lancaster.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to a Humane Society of ones choice.
STARK -
Lucille J. (Demers) Wentworth
....show , 88, passed away on December 12, 2009 at the Country Village Health Care Center, Lancaster NH.
She was born February 18,1921 in West Dummer, NH, one of the oldest of the14 children of Alfred and Louisa (Lemieux) Demers.
She was partially raised by her grandmother, Bridget Gonyer who was of Irish decent. She lived in several places with her grandmother, including Portland, Maine, Connecticut, and Berlin, NH. During that time she was a witness to the burning on the Hindenburg.
She returned home to live with her parents and worked very hard with her mother and sisters in all the daily chores of keeping up with a large family. She learned many skills such as cooking, crocheting, and sewing from her Mother of which she carried on through her life. She attended the Dummer Hill School and finished the 8th grade in Berlin. She and Glenn Amos Wentworth, also of W. Dummer, were married in Gorham, NH, were they lived a short time before going back to the Dummer area. For a few years they resided in Big Bear Lake, California, but eventually returned to Crystal Village in Stark where they remained and finished raising their family.
Lucille worked many years for Campbell Envelope in Northumberland. She also worked for a short time at the Groveton Mill and later the mill North Stratford from which she retired. She enjoyed driving her 57 Chevy to work along with some of the other vehicles she owned. She became very close to the caring and compassionate staff and residents at Country Village during her stay with them.
She is survived by three sons, Clark Wentworth and his wife Judith of Stark Village, Barry Wentworth and his wife Linda of Crystal Village, Stark, and Allen Wentworth of West Dummer Hill. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Abain Demers and his wife Jeanne of Biddeford, ME, David Demers of Groveton; four sisters , Pearl Gilcris of Groveton, Gladys Matherson and her husband Thomas "Roger" of Easton, MA, Dorothy "Dot" Gildeau of Canton, MA, Sr. Mary Lorraine Demers of Jamaica Plains, MA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Glenn Wentworth; her parents; 8 siblings; a daughter-in-law; 2 infant sons and a great-grandson.
There will be no calling hours. Cremation will be followed by interment in the Dummer Hill Cemetery with a private family service in the Spring.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Salvation Army.
