, 62, of Barton died after a brief illness on December 25, 2008, in St. Johnsbury. Ms. Woodbridge was born August 29, 1946, in New Hampshire, a daughter of Ludolphe and Luce (Vezina)Labounty. She was a case manager at Northeast Kingdom Human Services. She enjoyed gardening. She is survived by two sisters, Mary Jane Page of South Acton, Massachusetts, and Susan Rowell of Charleston, South Carolina; three children: Kim Woodbridge of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, John S. Woodbridge III of Barton, and Dylan Woodbridge of Barton; by one granddaughter Alexandra Britton of Philadelphia; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Ludolphe and Luce Labounty of Barton. Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Church in Barton December 29 with the Reverend Sixmund Nyabenda celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Mr. Sylvester was born April 21, 1942, and raised in Derby, a son of Armand Sylvester and Athea (Blay) Sylvester. In September 19, 1959, he married Mary (Hodgdon) Sylvester, who survives him. He enjoyed working at North Country Hospital as a volunteer. He enjoyed visiting with friends, was very family oriented, and loved his children and grandchildren dearly. He drove truck for 19 years for Earl Hackett Sr. and 14 years for Marcel Robert. He loved driving truck and driving his wife, Mary, to dialysis for three days a week for the last six years. He is survived by his children: Ricky and his wife, Jeannie, of Japan, Irving Jr. of Tennessee, Keith and his wife, Heather, of Holland, Tammy Simpson and her husband, Joe, of Coventry, Mark and his wife, Martha, of Newport, and Crystal LeClerc and her husband, Henry, of Coventry; by grandchildren: Richard of North Carolina, Adam of Texas, Marie, Christine, Amanda, Jennifer of Maine, Tiffany of Orleans, Laura of Eden, Keith of Derby Line, Josh, Jessica, and Mary Ellen of Barre, Logan, Jake, Johnny of Holland, Nicholas, Matt, and Brandon Simpson of Coventry, Bucky, Brandon, and Louise Dennett of Newport, and Amber, Natasha, and Dannielle of Georgia; and by 17 great-grandchildren. , 99, of Newport died peacefully in the company of her family on December 25, 2008, in Barton. Mrs. Sheltra was born June 30, 1909, in Lowell, a daughter of Julius and Emily (Shover) Sheltra. She married Nelson Sheltra, who predeceased her in 1950. She was a lifelong seamstress throughout the area and a member of the Daughters of Isabella at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church. She loved and enjoyed life, people (especially children), music, dancing, gardening, canning, and cooking. Her family was most important to her. She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Azur and Melba Collins, both of Newport; by four granddaughters and their partners: Marlene Gosselin and Jason of Newport, Karlene and Carl Farnsworth of Derby Line, Darlene and Steve Pruitt of Yuba City, California, and Charlene and David Hunt of Bristol; by eight great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren, making four sets of five generations; by brother Lewis Sheltra of Barton; by dear sister-in-law Mae Coapland of Orleans; and by beloved family friend Lucy Lahue. She was predeceased by daughter Theresa; by seven brothers: Forest, Chester, Henry, Robert, Eli, Lawrence, and Gerald; by five sisters: Goldie, Venice, Angie, Irene, and Julia; and by longtime friend Ralph Dawson. Funeral services were held December 30 at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church in Newport with the Reverend Yvon Royer celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. , 91, of Newport died peacefully January 3, 2009, in Newport. Mr. Rondeau was born April 5, 1917, in Newport Center, a son of Joseph and Evelina (LeBlanc)Rondeau. On October 9, 1961, he married Hermeline Lanctot in Farnham, Quebec. She predeceased him on February 1, 2006. He was a dairy farmer, and for 12 years he was a truck driver for Kraft until April 1982. He had recently resided with Manon Perrault and Sonny Sloan at their home, after which he had a brief rehabilitative stay at Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Center, where he died. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a past member of the Holy Name Society of North Troy. He is survived by siblings: NoellaRondeau of Newport, Sister Lucienne Rondeau and Sister Francoise Rondeau of Methuen, Massachusetts, George Rondeau and his wife, Jacqueline, of Columbia, Tennessee, Bernard Rondeau and his wife, Alice, of Newport, and Paul Rondeau and his wife, Stella, of Claremont, New Hampshire; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by siblings: Simone Therrien, Jeanne Bathalon, Theresa Laramee, Laurette Tweed, and Lucille Brouillard. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7, at St. Vincent de Paul Church in North Troy with the Reverend Yvon Royer celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. , 78, of Derby died in his home, surrounded by his loving family, on January 1, 2009. Mr. Plante was born in Dover, New Hampshire, where he spent his childhood. He later moved to Berlin, New Hampshire. He attended Notre Dame High School and was president of his senior class. During the Korean War he joined the Navy, serving much of his time on the U.S.S. White Marsh LSD 8. He was also stationed in Adak, Alaska. In 1952 he married Rita Nadeau, the love of his life. After graduating from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in business administration, he and his family moved to Vermont. As a sales representative for Nabisco, he traveled his territory in northern Vermont. Steadfast and devoted to his work, he often traveled in weather that a postal worker would shun. He enjoyed his customers and considered them his friends. His 30-year career with Nabisco was one of many awards, which included his most treasured 1985 Salesman of the Year award from the Vermont Grocers' Association convention. He was a member of American Legion Post 21. He spent many years as a church council member, also volunteering his carpentry skills to repair and maintain St. Benedict's Church. He loved to remodel his home, read books, work in his woodworking shop, and photograph landscapes and his family. He loved his beautiful home in Derby and could not imagine living anywhere else. After all his years of traveling for Nabisco, he rarely wanted to leave his home except to visit his children. He was quite man with a wonderful sense of humor that surprised many. He was often called upon to speak at public and private functions. He was a loving and faithful husband and father, loyal and fair, stoic and infinitely understanding. He will be dearly missed. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Rita (Nadeau) Plante; by his children: Mark Plante and his wife, Diane, of Tucson, Arizona, Valerie (Plante) Day and her husband, Steven, of Swanton, John Plante and his wife, Angela, of Miami, Florida, and James Plante and his wife, Sylvie, of St. Albans; by his in-laws: Marianna Plante of Clyde, New York, Doris and Donald LaPointe of Berlin, New Hampshire, Pauline Dupuis from Berlin, New Hampshire, and Lucille Stiles of Concord, New Hampshire; by his treasured grandchildren: Amber and Audrey Plante of St. Albans and Sonia and Jacob Plante of Miami, Florida; by stepgrandchildren Morgan Willey of Boston, Massachusetts, and Kamilah Willey of San Rafael, California; by several nieces and nephews; and by his many cherished friends. , 66, of Irasburg, died Sunday morning, December 28, 2008, at St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Percy was born August 16, 1942, in Newport, a son of George and Georgia (Buck) Percy. In 1962 he married Ora Fay Kennison, who predeceased him in 1978. He was later married to Barbara Merchant. After separating from Ms. Merchant, he met Linda Carroll, who became his companion for 18 years. Ms. Carroll predeceased him in 2001. He worked as a mechanic and truck driver for Green Mountain Fence Company in Glover for many years. He enjoyed taking his children on some of his trucking trips from Maine to Maryland. In his free time he repaired cars, trucks, and lawn mowers, and he enjoyed woodworking, remodeling, and fishing. He loved music and played the guitar. Time spent with his children and family was most important to him. Survivors include six children: Rhonda Gilman and her husband, Scott, of Lyndonville, Jeff Percy and his wife, Kaija, of West Burke, Lonnie Percy and his wife, Dawn, of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, Richard Carroll and his wife, Karen, of Irasburg, Brian Carroll and his wife, Melody, of Irasburg, and Shane Percy of Barton; several grandchildren; four brothers: Lester Percy and his wife, Jean, of North Troy, David Percy and his wife, Donna, of New Hampshire, Donald Percy of Massachusetts, and Gary Percy of Newport; six sisters: Dorcas Jones and her husband, Bruce, of Florida, Betty Curtis and her husband, Dallas, of Alabama, Cynthia Smith of Newport, Donna Bowen of Newport, Dolores Lussier and her husband, John, of Georgia, and Deborah Percy of Coventry; many nieces and nephews; several close friends; and his former wife, Barbara Merchant, of Barton. Marianna Paquette

, 87, died peacefully in her sleep on December 12, 2008, in Barton. Mrs. Paquette had been a resident of Maple Lane Nursing Home for the past year and had previously lived at Michaud Manor and the Derby Trailer Park. She was born in Holland on July 14, 1921, a daughter of Archelas and Amanda (Cote) Blais. She attended elementary school in Holland and at the Ursiline Convent in Stanstead, Quebec. She graduated from Derby Academy and went to Johnson State College to obtain her teaching degree. Her first teaching positions were in East Albany and Hardwick. She married Gerard Paquette of Orleans, and he predeceased her on August 17, 1973. They settled in Marlboro, Massachusetts, where she taught third grade from 1959 to 1963. She helped organize the Marlboro Girls Club. She then worked in social services for the state of Massachusetts, retiring in 1988. She came back to her roots and lived at the Derby Trailer Park. Her volunteer work kept her very busy. Her many activities included teaching French at Sacred Heart School, helping inmates at the Northern State Correctional Facility get their general education diplomas, and serving as an officer for a Newport senior citizens group and the Daughters of Isabella. She was a member of the St. Edward's Ladies Guild. Up until December 1, she was teaching French at St. Paul's Catholic School in Barton. She taught third- and fourth-grade Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes at Trinity Parish. She was an instructor for the American Association of Retired Persons driver safety course and a member of the reparative board of the Newport Community Justice Center. Her many awards testify of her devotedness and faithfulness to the many tasks in which she was involved. In her spare time she was busy with knitting and crocheting; she also enjoyed playing cards. She leaves two brothers, Alphonse Blais and his wife, Jacqueline, of Marlboro and Joseph Blais and his wife, Carmen, of Derby Line; sister Theresa Blanchette of Tewksbury, Massachusetts; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by eight brothers: Leopold, Albert, Antonio, Elphege, Herman, Aime, Phillip, and Benoit; and by two sisters, Alma Lavoie and Maria Jalbert. , 74, of Barton, formerly of Albany, died December 18, 2008, in Barton. Mrs. Maynard was born December 8, 1934, in Newport, a daughter of Reginald and Gertrude (Butterfield) Albee. She married Albert Maynard, who predeceased her in 1984. She received her associate's degree in media and bachelor of science degree in behavioral science from Lyndon State College. She designed, organized, and instructed a course on substance abuse at Lyndon State College, which was the first of its kind. At one time she was a news reporter at the Newport Daily Express. She loved Jesus and attending church to sing. She is survived by her children: Enoch Rowell III and his wife, Kim, of Coventry, Reginald Rowell and his wife, Denise, of Irasburg, Eric Rowell of Coventry, and Karla Piette and her husband, Leo, of Coventry; by 11 grandchildren; by nine great-grandchildren; by stepchildren: James Maynard, Reginald Maynard, and Susan and Shirley Abare; and by three nephews and two nieces. She was predeceased by her sister Mary Mayhew; and by her first husband, Enoch Rowell II. , 99, a daughter of the Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, died December 26, 2008, at Mount Sacred Heart Provincial House and Infirmary in Littleton, New Hampshire. Antoinette Laberge was born in L'Ange-Gardien, Montmorency County, Québec, on May 21, 1909, a daughter of Octave Laberge and Auxilia Labbé. Sister Octave de Jésus professed her vows with her religious congregation on July 9, 1936. During her 61 years of religious life, Sister Octave, as she has been known to most, served in various missions in Colebrook, Hudson, and Littleton, New Hampshire; Plattsburgh, New York; Augusta, Maine; and Newport, Vermont. Sister Octave dedicated much of her earlier religious life and artistic talent to community services such as cooking, sacristan, needlework, sewing, and laundry. She is most familiar to many for making communion wafers, which supplied countless parishes, convents, and monasteries for many years. In 1993, she joined the community at Mount Sacred Heart and continued to lend her talents, serving the Sisters' needs in quiet but much-appreciated ways. Sister Octave was predeceased by her parents and several family members. She is survived by three brothers: Fernand, Armand, and Jules; by one sister, Noëlla Champagne; by her Sisters in the religious community; and by several nieces and nephews. On December 29 a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated. Spring interment will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery in Newport. , 78, of Newport Center died Monday, December 8, 2008, after a period of declining health. Mr. Hurd was born in North Andover, Massachusetts, on May 12, 1930, a son of Albert and Vera (Crouch) Hurd. He graduated from Keene High School in Keene, New Hampshire, in 1948 and attended Keene State College. He enlisted for four years in the U.S. Air Force with duty in the U.S., England, and Germany. He worked for many years for the Markem Corporation in Keene, New Hampshire, before retiring and moving to Newport Center, where he built his home with the help of his large and loving family. He had resided in Newport Center for the past 20 years. He was an active member of the United Church of Newport, where he served on many committees and sang in the choir until his health prevented him from doing so. He was a multitalented man with a love of woodworking, gardening, and music. His greatest love was his family and being with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, attending as many of their life events as he could. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Alice Hurd, of Newport Center; by his six children: Vernon and his wife, Judy, of Newport Center, Steven and his wife, Trudy, of Coventry, Sharon Mousette and her husband, David, of Keene, New Hampshire, Milton of St. Louis, Missouri, Calvin and his wife, Bambi, of Waterbury, Connecticut, and Sheldon and his wife, Lisa, of Orleans; by his brother Arno and his wife, Marie, of Troy, New Hampshire; by three sisters: Martha Colburn of Laconia, New Hampshire, Prue Reed of Suffield, Connecticut, and Barbara Cowdrey and her husband, Leo, of Deerfield, New Hampshire; by 15 grandchildren: Olivia Smith, Elizabeth Martin, Mary Alice Hurd, Peter Hurd, Thomas Hurd, Colette Hildreth, David Mousette, Timothy Mousette, ScottMousette, Jessica Rowland, and Raynor, Holly, Adam, Dale, and Richard Hurd; and by six great-grandchildren. Born January 15, 1931, in Burlington, Mrs. Hoadley was a daughter of Charles and Ruth (Pettengill) Bapp. She was known for her fudge, bread, and crocheted baby sweater sets. She was a very loving and caring person who will be missed deeply by everyone who knew her. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Fred Hoadley, of Hyde Park; by two daughters, Mary Judd and her husband, Douglas, of Hyde Park and Ruth Hill and her husband, Sonny, of Albany; by her sister Virginia Lancaster of Island Pond; by eight grandchildren; by 15 great-grandchildren; and by one soon-to-be-born great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her daughter Linda; by her great-granddaughter Keystin; by two sisters; by one brother; and by her parents. Funeral services were held December 14 at the First Congregational Church in Hyde Park with the Reverend Michael Ford officiating. , 88, of Colchester, Connecticut, widower of Beverly (Houghton) Goodwin, died Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at the Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, Connecticut, surrounded by his loving family. Born June 27, 1920, in Craftsbury, Mr. Goodwin was a son of Bernie Royal Goodwin and Bessie Lane. He proudly served with the 654th Army Engineer Division during World War II. Following the war, on December 17, 1945, he and Beverly Houghton were married in Greensboro. Together, they shared 58 wonderful years before she predeceased him on February 26, 2004. He was also predeceased by his parents. He was an auto mechanic for many years before his retirement. Survivors include four daughters: Jean Scroggins of Killingworth, Connecticut, Eleanor Bedell of Colchester, Linda Hnatiuk of Manitoba, and Marilyn Moroch of Colchester; three sons: Steven, Mark, and Brian, all of Colchester; a brother, Paul, of Iowa; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews in Vermont; and numerous extended family members and friends. A chapel service with full military honors was observed December 14. Jim Erwin

, 74, died and passed peacefully from this Earth on December 24, 2008, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Derby. Mr. Erwin was born to George and Mary Erwin on October 20, 1934, in Macomb, Illinois, and grew up in Peoria, Illinois. He lived for a short time in Twin Falls, Idaho, and Buda and Keokuk, Illinois, where his father published small-town newspapers and had photographic studios. Mr. Erwin was very proud of the work he did on the newspapers and in the studios as a young boy to help his parents. He graduated from Bradley University with a master's degree in clinical psychology and moved to Derby with his young family from Clarinda, Iowa, in 1967 to become one of the founding members of Northeast Kingdom Mental Health Services. He was asked to join the staff as associate director and director of children's services by the founding director and lifelong friend Jerry Errion, who predeceased him. He served in this capacity until his retirement in 1999 as executive director. He was extremely proud of his work with children and teachers in area public schools. He was very dedicated to issues of community and rural mental health. He was widely respected for his vast knowledge of garden design, plants, trees, and flowers. He loved all things having to do with nature, music, reading, history, and sailing. He had recently donated his Point Jude sailboat to the oncology department at North Country Hospital. He shared the love of his family, home, gardens, friends, music, and his dogs, as well as his great sense of humor, with everyone who visited his home. He was very proud of his community work, especially his many years of service on the Derby Elementary School Board, the Orleans-Essex North Supervisory Union Board, and the Vermont Council of Developmental and Mental Health Services. He was appointed by Governor Tom Salmon to serve on the state of Vermont Board of Psychological Examiners and was honored for his work by receiving license two as a clinical psychologist by the state of Vermont. He was a member of the Derby Lions Club and the Orleans County Historical Society. During his courageous battle with brain cancer, he was deeply moved by receiving cards of thanks from people whose lives were affected by his work. He had the unique ability to help people find their own strengths and capacity for kindness. He leaves his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Margaret Bevency Erwin; his loving daughter Lisa Erwin-Davidson and her husband, Stephen; his loving son Eric James Erwin and his wife, Lisa; grandchildren: Karina and James Miller and Joseph and Emmett Erwin; stepgrandchildren Mike and Steve Davidson; his sister Nancy Gannon and her husband, Robert, of Kentucky; sisters-in-law: Frances Errion of New York, Anne Walter, Louise Bulach, and Mary Bevency of Illinois; brothers-in-law Fred Bevency and Robert Bulach of Illinois; several nieces and nephews; and many special friends, all to mourn for him. His love of life and family helped to sustain his strength during his illness. A private memorial service will be held at the family home in the spring. , 58, of Newport Center died suddenly December 31, 2008, in Newport. Mr. Donovan was born December 11, 1950, in Newport Center, a son of Michael and Esther (St. Onge) Donovan. He graduated from North Country Union High School in 1969. On March 13, 1970, he married Pamela Carter, his loving wife and best friend for 38 years. She survives him. He was a truck driver for the town of Newport Center for six years, and the town of Troy for three years. He was employed at one time by Ethan Allen. He enjoyed hunting and four-wheeling, and he enjoyed the company of his grandchildren and the family dogs. He was predeceased by his grandson Jacob Ryan Gray; and by his mother-in-law, Shirley D. Carter. Funeral services were held January 6 in Newport with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. , 97, of Newport died peacefully December 10, 2008, in Newport. Mrs. Dean was born June 9, 1911, in Salem, Derby, a daughter of Zacharie and Adel (Mailloux) Therrien. She married Germain Lalime in 1936. He predeceased her in 1958. She married Merton "Mike" Dean in 1966, and he predeceased her in 1982. She helped her husband, Germain, run their farm on the Airport Road. When she married Mike they were very devoted to each other, which brought a lot of company to each other, as she supported his love of flying, going for short rides, and spending time with family members. She was a past member of the Daughters of Isabella. She is survived by her children Pauline Labor and her husband, Larry, of Morgan and Robert Lalime and his wife, Gale, of Tucson, Arizona; by stepchildren: Robert Dean and his wife, Roberta, of Bethel, Donald Dean and his friend, Sandy Tisdale, of Wilder, and Doris Dean of Bridgewater Corners; by grandchildren: Mark and Ann Labor of Wisconsin, Sarah and Roger Start of Ohio, Stephen and Jeannie Labor of California, Laura and Christopher Comtois of Ohio, Douglas Lalime of Arizona, and Scott and Tammy Lalime of Orleans; by 12 great-grandchildren; by sister Simone Durose of New Jersey; and by nephew Clive Durose and his wife, Nancy, of Crofton, Maryland. She was predeceased by two brothers, Norman and Paul. Funeral services were held December 13 at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Derby Line with the Reverend Yvon Royer celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Spring interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Newport.
