, age 75, of Tilton, N.H., passed away unexpectedly on March 28, 2009, at the Franklin Regional Hospital. Donnie was born on March 1, 1934, a son to Roy and Gertrude Dodge in Littleton, N.H. He attended school in North Lisbon, N.H. Donnie worked on the family farm until 1954, at which time he joined the United States Army and was stationed in France, and during that time he completed his schooling. He returned to Littleton, where he resided for many years, working as a carpenter and also in construction. Donnie moved to Tilton 29 years ago, and took the position as Custodian at the Winnesquam Regional School until his retirement. He enjoyed camping in his free time. Surviving family members include his son, Troy N. Dodge and companion, Penny of Littleton; one granddaughter, Jessica Miller Dodge of Haverhill, N.H.; this twin brother, Willie E. Dodge of Lebanon, N.H., four other brothers, Gene D. Dodge of Littleton; Herbert C. Dodge of Greensboro, N.C., Clarence E. Dodge and wife, Jean of Littleton, David R. Dodge and wife, Sharon of Littleton; four sisters, Maureen M. Sweeney and companion, Phil of Woodsville, N.H., Alice M. Wilson and husband, Bob of Littleton, Florence J. McFarland of Plantation, Fla., and Louise E. Myrick and husband, Sam of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by a younger brother, Robert L. Dodge in 2004. Graveside services will be held in the Glenwood Cemetery in Littleton on May 22 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Donnie's memory to a charity of your choice.

, of Kirby, died peacefully Sunday afternoon April 05, 2009, surrounded by her family, at the Pines Rehabilitation & Health Center in Lyndon, at the age of 90. She was born Oct. 8, 1918, in Chester, Conn., the last surviving child of Frank and Jennie (Samuelson) Larson. On July 7, 1938, she married John Van Ostrand. They moved from Connecticut to Vermont in 1963. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Edith was very talented with sewing, crocheting, quilting, embroidering, braiding rugs, and making clothes for her family. She enjoyed poetry, nature, wildlife, cooking, and canning and freezing vegetables from their garden. She had also been a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 10038 of Lyndonville. Survivors include her husband of 71 years, John Van Ostrand of Kirby; two children, John Jr. "Jack" Van Ostrand and wife Denise of East Charleston, and Cynthia Brill and husband Wayland of Kirby; six grandchildren, Judy, Julianne, Janene, John III "Jake", Kristine, and David; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and several close friends and neighbors. She was predeceased by a son, Fred Van Ostrand; two brothers, Everett Larson, and Frank Larson; and three sisters, Olive Malcarne, Ruth Parodi, and Anna Larson. Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday April 9 at 1 p.m. at the North Kirby Cemetery with John Sleeper officiating. There will be no visiting hours. Frank E. Forest

, 60, of Dublin, N.H., formerly of Miles Pond, North Concord, Vt., died unexpectedly at his home on March 11, 2009. Frank is survived by his daughter Jennifer Armstron, and a son, Brian Forest. He is also survived by his mother, Joyce M. Forest and three sisters and two brothers: Saron and Kenneth Shatney, Arlene and William Allin, Claire and David Chapman, James and Phyllis Forest and Glenn and Patricia Forest. Frank was predeceased by his father, Arnold E. Forest and a niece, Charline Dewhurst. Frank was a graduate of Concord High School and a post graduate course from the St. Johnsbury Trade School. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed for a year in Germany. He received many commendations and received his honorable discharge in 1979. Frank enjoyed being a free spirit and traveled extensively in the United States, making many friends. He liked working with wood and was a carpenter by trade. His specialty was renovating houses and also making furniture. Members of his family have pieces of furniture made especially for them, which they will always treasure. There will be no funeral. , age 84, a lifelong Waterford resident, passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital. Born in Waterford June 20, 1924, he is the son of the late Glenn G. and Eva (Page) Powers. He married Patricia E. Wallace on June 6, 1947. She survives. Visiting hours will be Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Pearsons Funeral Home 70 Church St., Lyndonville. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 11, at 2 p.m., in the Union Baptist Church with Pastor Paul Powers, officiant. Interment will follow at the Riverside Cemetery in Waterford. Virgil M. Welch

, 77, Newbury, died on Sunday, April 5, 2009, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, N.H., following a brief illness. He was born Aug. 7, 1931, in Ryegate, Vt., the son of the late Flossie (Rhodes) and Dick Welch. Virgil attended schools in Ryegate and Groton and the Vermont Technical Center in Randolph. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and was then stationed in Germany following the war. He was honorably discharged in May 1960. He then worked at Caledonian Sand and Gravel and later became road foreman for the Town of Ryegate for many years, while still farming the Quarry Farm in South Ryegate. He farmed that land with his wife and children for over 40 years before selling it to live at his handmade log cabin on family land. He married his soul mate, Glenda (Burroughs) Welch, Aug. 12, 1955, in South Ryegate. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary together in August of 2005. Together they had five children who all survive him: Cathrine Williams and husband Terry of South Ryegate and their children Kylea and Silas; Carolyn Kimball and husband Donnie of North Haverhill, N.H., and their children Meagan and Andrew; Dick Welch of South Ryegate and his three children Tyler, Chelsea and Corey; Duane Welch and wife Lorrie of Concord and their children Brandon and Tonya; Alta Tegu and husband Steven of North Haverhill and their children Jennifer and Cassie and Jennifer's son and Papa's pride and joy, Jacob. He is also survived by a sister Linnie Rush of New York; a brother Kendall Welch of North Haverhill; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother Wilbur Welch; his twin brother Vernon; and a sister Alta Rush. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed the smaller things in life, such as tending to his horses, spending time with his dog "Blue," haying, sugaring, and having cookouts with his wife and family. At Virgil's request there will be no public services at this time. A gathering of family and friends will be held at a later date.

, 83, Ryegate, died on Sunday, April 5, 2009, at his home on Witherspoon Road. He was born in Groton, Sept. 16, 1925, a son of Roger and Sarah Crocker (Lawton) Eastman. "Tappy" worked for 37 years as a stone cutter in South Ryegate and Barre retiring from Savard Granite. He married Arlene (Barnes) Perkins on July 8, 1976. He entered the United States Army on Nov. 18, 1943, and served with the 277th Combat Engineers and the 333rd Engineer Special Service Regiment in the European Theater in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe until his discharge on March 29, 1946. He received the Good Conduct and Victory Medals. In his younger years he logged with a team of horses. He always enjoyed hunting, brook fishing, gardening, and sugaring. During the winter, he loved to read, especially books about Vermont history. He was a supporter of the Blue Mountain School community, attending their sporting events, sharing his knowledge of the local granite history and taking classes to the Blue Mt. quarry. Following his retirement, he and Arlene traveled and were members of the Vermont 251 Club. He also helped at the Ryegate Corner Presbyterian Church. Most importantly, he cherished the times visiting with family and friends. He was predeceased by his first wife Eldora (Chamberlin) Eastman on Sept. 26, 1970; two sisters,Carrie "Esther" Murray and Dorothy Magoon; six brothers, Harold "Tom," Howard, Earl "Bart," Bernice "Larry," Vernold "Cut," and Kenneth; by a step-son Richard Perkins on Dec. 27, 2005; a step-grandson Jeff Leonard on March 24, 1999; and by a son-in-law Dean Hatch on Oct. 1, 2004. Survivors include his wife, Arlene Eastman of Ryegate; three daughters, Ruth Hatch of South Ryegate, Codie Rockwood and husband Tim of Hartland, and Lois Farley of Nashville, Tenn.: two sons, Dean Eastman and wife Pamela of Sutton, and Robert Eastman and wife Victoria of Port Orchard, Wash.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister Catherine Cochran of Morrisville; a brother Robert Eastman and wife Ann of Groton; two step daughters, Laura Clark and husband John of Williamstown, and Linda Leonard and husband Dan of Ryegate; two step sons, Gene Perkins and wife Nancy and Daryl Perkins and wife Dottie all of Ryegate; nine step-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. , 69, Dance Hall Road, Lunenburg, died suddenly Sunday, April 5, 2009, at the Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster, N.H. He was born in St. Johnsbury, the son of Joseph and Bertha (Broughton) Mooney. He attended local schools. He worked for Fairbanks Morse as well as Gilman Paper Mill as a foundry worker. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, four wheeling, cookouts, but most of all his family. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother Theodore Mooney; and his three sisters Laura Carpenter, Marie Mason, and Marion Mooney. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Arda (Switser) Mooney, Lunenburg; three sons Melville John Mooney Jr. and Christine Thompson of Glover, David Carroll Mooney and wife Sara of Littleton, N.H., and Joseph Allen Mooney and wife Cherie, Concord; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

, 93, a lifelong member of Greensboro, died at her home on April 5, 2009. She was born Sept. 26, 1915, the daughter of Alton and Bertha (Young) White. She graduated from Greensboro High School in 1933, Johnson Normal School in 1935, and Goddard College in 1970. On Sept. 2, 1950, she married Fred A. Ling. She taught for many years in the northern Vermont area, mostly in elementary schools but also in special education. She was a member of Greensboro United Church of Christ, Caspian Lake Grange, Hazen Road Pomona Grange and Riverside Chapter Eastern Star. She was an active volunteer in many aspects of the community. She served as a 4-H leader for over 25 years and on county and state foundations. She was a school director for 10 years, a founding member and active participant in the Greensboro Historical Society and a volunteer at the Greensboro Library and Nursing Home. She was a local news reporter for many years with the Hardwick Gazette and The Caledonian-Record. In 1981, she was selected as Vermont's Outstanding Senior Citizen and in 1985, she was recognized by the United Church of Christ as an Outstanding Laywoman. The Town of Greensboro honored her in 1990 with the Greensboro Award for Community Service. Survivors include her son, Arthur and spouse Sharon of Hardwick; daughter Alice and spouse Ben Crosby of Derry, N.H.; daughter-in-law Janice of Springfield, Miss.; five grandchildren, Tonya Madison and Nicole Tilden, both of Barre, and Eric, Monica and Kelsey, all of Springfield, Mont.; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Clara Wells and spouse Marvin of Marshfield and brother Lawrence White of Glover; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred, on Sept. 13, 1984; their son, Alton, on March 24, 2009; a sister, Josephine White; and a brother, Irwin White. , 66, Ryegate Road, Wells River, died on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at his residence. He was born in Groton, Nov. 24, 1942, the son of Forrest and Iona Thurley (Gray) Page. Carwin attended Groton High School. He was a former owner of Groton Garage and worked at Morrison's Feed in Barnet for 15 years before retiring. He married Jane Aldrich on Nov. 30, 1997. Carwin was a Harley Davidson enthusiast and enjoyed riding in good weather. He always enjoyed outside work, and playing his guitar. Carwin will also be greatly missed by his dog, Peter Pug Page. He was predeceased by his parents, Iona (Thurley) Page on April 15, 1993, and Forrest Page on Dec. 16, 2002; and by an infant son, Bryce Page. Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Jane Page of Wells River; two daughters, Pamela Young and husband Raymond of Peacham, and Jaime Page of Fort Mill, S.C.; one son, Clinton Page of Thetford; two step daughters, Kelly Longmoore of Wells River, and Marcia Whitehouse of McIndoe Falls; two step sons, Trevor Ruggles of Auburn, Mass., and Kevin Ruggles of Danville; three brothers, Gordon W. went home to be with the Lord, with his family at his side on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at the age of 84. Born in Waterford June 20, 1924, he is the son of the late Glenn G. and Eva (Page) Powers. Russell attended the Waterford Woods School, Littleton High School, and St. Johnsbury Trade School where he graduated with the class of 1943, and the Providence Bible Institute 1947-1948. He served in the U.S. Army, PFC for 18 months during WWII. He married Patricia E. Wallace on June 6, 1947. Russell worked for Garelick Bros. Farms in Franklin, Mass., 1949-1956, as a route salesman. In 1956 he returned to Vermont to farm with his brother Willard for about 30 years, he continued farming with sons Kevin and Ron. Kevin took over things in 1986 and Russell retired in the early 1990s. Russell was a member of Union Baptist Church for 53 years, served as a Deacon for many years and was a life-long Gideon member. He served as a Lister for many years for the Town of Waterford. He thoroughly enjoyed making maple syrup. He won several blue ribbons at the Caledonia County Fair. He also enjoyed roadside marketing of the syrup and meeting people. Russell is survived by his loving wife, Patricia of Waterford; children, Ronald Powers and wife Sherrill, Kevin Powers and wife Debbie, Judith Daniels and husband Stephen, Sandra Grant and husband Kenneth, and Sharon Bohlen and husband Nick; a daughter-in-law, Jane Powers Lyon; and 21 grandchildren. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Lois Eileen Powers; son, Daniel G. Powers; and two grandchildren, Kristen Grant, and Matthew Grant. Visiting hours will be Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Pearsons Funeral Home 70 Church St., Lyndonville. William Siegmund

, 84, of Bath, N.H., died on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at the Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, N.H. William was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., April 6, 1925, the son of William and Bertha (Hoelman) Siegmund. He graduated from high school and New York University in New York City. William married Irene Virginia Meyer on May 23, 1945. He served with the U.S. Navy from March 4, 1943, to April 14, 1946, serving on the USS LST 176, USS LST 175, USS LST 261, and USS LST 213. He worked around the Long Island and New York City area, before moving to Bath, N.H., with his family. William and Irene built their home on Monroe Road and he took great pride in the appearance of their home and landscape. He worked as a correctional officer at the Windsor, Vt., County Correctional Facility and was an officer for the Haverhill Police Department. William was the co-administrator, with his wife Irene, at the Grafton County Nursing Complex from November 1969 until Irene's retirement in 1981. He continued as the administrator from 1981 until his retirement in June, 1990. William was a past member of Ross Wood Post #20 American Legion of Woodsville, N.H., and VFW Post #5245 of North Haverhill, N.H., and was a member of United States LST Association. He was a very loving and devoted husband and father. He had a strong work ethic and was an accomplished gentleman. Mr. Siegmund was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Irene V. Siegmund on Dec. 10, 2007; a daughter, Karen Siegmund on Aug. 23, 1999; and a sister, Lois Hofer. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 6, at 11 a.m., at the Horsemeadow Cemetery, North Haverhill, N.H. Erich "Buck" Eugene Buchman

, 85, of Island Pond, passed away on April 9, 2009, at his home surrounded by his wife and daughter. He was born on Dec. 9, 1923, in Los Angeles, Calif., a son of Erick and Nellie (Short) Buckman. On Nov. 7, 1946, he married Betty Rose Ordiway, who survives him. Buchman retired in 1963 from the U.S. Air Force after serving for 20 years. He then went on to a 20-year career with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company based in Trenton, N.J. In 1985, he retired to Island Pond with his wife. Among his hobbies he enjoyed woodworking, and he was a member of the American Legion Post# 80 in Island Pond. He is survived by his wife Betty Buchman of Island Pond; three children, daughter Doreen L. Buchman and son-in-law William H. Lammers, of Kutztown, Pa., son Avery Scott Buchman of Trenton, N.J., and daughter Lisa K. Tronco and her companion Patrick Presutto, of Parkertown, N.J.; three grandchildren, Nicole Ozgul and her husband Aytac of Manahawkin, N.J., Kyra Lammers of Kutztown, Pa., and Maxine Lammers of Kutztown; daughter-in-law Peggy Buchman of Hazelton, Pa.; a niece Harriet Moring of Virginia Beach, Va.; and a nephew Gary Soule of Norfolk, Va. Mr. Buchman was predeceased by a son Craig L. Buchman and a sister Barbara J. Soule. Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family.
