of Littleton, N.H., entered into The Lord's care on May 14, 2009, at the Littleton Regional Hospital following a recent illness. May was born in Waban, Mass., on Groundhog Day, Feb. 2, 1914, a daughter of Ethel Viola Young and Willard H. Loud Sr. She attended Newton schools and graduated from Newton High in 1931. May married John E. Parker Jr. on April 23, 1949. She was an avid golfer and bowler and thoroughly enjoyed gardening. She worked 17 years for her father at Stimpson Paper Co. in Boston before she married. After her marriage, May worked for LaSalle Jr. College, in Auburndale, Mass., and for the counseling program there under Dr. Don Manthei until 1989. She was a member of The Union Church in Waban, until she moved to Littleton, N.H., in 1998. Since then she has been a member of the First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. May was a resident of The Riverglen House in Littleton, since January 2008. May was predeceased by her loving husband, John, in 1972; sisters, Dorothy H. Sturdevant, Gertrude F. Loud, and brother, Willard H. (Bill) Loud Jr. May is survived by her children, Dorothy E. (Debbie) Alberini and husband Richard of Littleton, N.H., and David Earle Parker Sr. of Miami, Fla., and her sister-in-law, Mary Nelson Loud, of Wellesley, Mass. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: David and Emily Alberini, Stephen and Emshika Alberini, and John Alberini all of Littleton, N.H.; Elena and Esteban Acosta, Caroline E. Parker, David E. Parker Jr. and Stephany N. Parker all of Miami, Fla. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren: Emma Alberini of Twin Mountain, N.H.; Tyler Alberini and Parker Alberini, both of Littleton, N.H. Surviving nieces and nephews include: Charlie and Connie Andrews of Reston, Va., Caroline Parker Allen of Middlebury, Vt., Catherine Andrews of Burlington, Vt., Cynthia and John Rice of South Portland, Maine, Philip and Jennifer Loud of Ann Arbor, Mich., Phyllis and Jim Brown of Chatham, N.J., Tom and Rita Clough, of Glenville, Pa., Charlotte and Frank Klein of Carlisle, Pa., and Margaret and Ed Boner of Seven Valleys, Pa. A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Littleton, N.H., on June 27, 2009, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Sam Newton officiating. A luncheon will follow in the fellowship hall. James Richard Van Sant

, 81, of Lyndonville, passed away on May 14, 2009, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital. He was born in Langhorne, Pa., on June 12, 1927, the son of the late Clifford and Blanche (Wessaw) Van Sant. He was a graduate of Neshaminy High School in Langhorne. Jim served in the U.S. Marines Corps from 1945 thru 1949 and was in the reserves for two more years, earning numerous commendations. Jim married Nancy Romberger in 1949; they had two daughters, Debra and Vicki. He later remarried Kathleen White on Sept. 11, 1983; they lived near Willoughby Lake in Westmore for 23 years and moved to Lyndonville in 2007. Jim had a career working as a sales rep, selling farm equipment, wooden silos, and laminated rafters. A skilled hunter, he looked forward to his annual trips to New York and Pennsylvania. A talented woodworker, he was always building something in his work shop. He enjoyed working outside around his home and on various properties on the shores of Willoughby Lake. He and Kay were always caring for their gardens, feeding and watching the birds, and traveling the back roads of Vermont and New York. They loved to travel to see their grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Kay of Lyndonville; two daughters: Debra Van Sant Harvey and husband Michael of Guilford, N.H., and her son Sean Bucalo; Vicki Van Sant of Somerville, Mass.; Jim's step-children: Lawrie Easterbrooks and husband Robert of Lyndonville; Edward White and wife Maggie of Dundee, N.Y., Vickie Poginy and husband Denis of Glover, Brent White and wife Beverly of Duxbury, Vt.; his brother Bernard Van Sant of Wellsboro, Pa., sister Lola Van Sant Transue and husband Earl of New Albany, Pa.; 13 step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased a niece Dauhn Transue, a nephew David Transue, and a step-grandson Andrew Easterbrooks. Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 21, at 3 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery located on the north end of Willoughby Lake in Westmore. The Rev. Judy Horgan will officiate. , 84, of Sheffield, died Friday morning May 15, 2009, at his home with his family at his side. He was born April 7, 1925, in Sheffield, the son of Eddie and Iola (Sheldon) Walker. Schooled in Sheffield, Willie later worked as a dairy farmer and operated his own Jersey farm in Sheffield for more than 25 years. He also was a logger. He loved his cows and work horses, and took some of his cows and his team of horses to area fairs where he won many ribbons showing his cattle, and in the horse pulling events. After he sold his farm, he worked various jobs and was considered to be a "Jack of all trades." On July 21, 1951, he married Geneva (Gilman). She pre-deceased him on Feb. 25, 1990. On April 18, 1992, he married Yvette (Rock). Willie had been a member of the Sheffield Federated Church. Survivors include his wife Yvette Walker of Sheffield; three daughters, Susan Bedor of Lyndon Center, Diane True and husband David of Lyndonville, and Debra Mardin of Littleton, N.H.; a son, Robert Walker and wife Sharon of Wheelock; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Evelyn Lussier and husband Roger of Lyndonville, Betty Burt and husband Harold of Sheffield, and Joanne Tanner and companion Henry St. Cyr of Waterford; and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a son in-law, Stephen Bedor; a brother, Gordon Walker; and a sister and her husband, Goldie and Norman Paquin. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 19, at 3 p.m. at the Guibord Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Pittman officiating. Friends may call on the family one hour prior to the start of the service beginning at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in William-Dexter Cemetery in Sheffield. Ruth Shores Noble

, 90, of Granby, passed away at Weeks Medical Center in Lancaster, N.H., Thursday, May 14, 2009. Ruth was born in Granby on Sept. 3, 1918, the daughter of Ceylon and Sallie (Hodgdon) Shores. She married Clyde A. Noble on Aug. 8, 1940. Ruth put in many hours of community service. She served as 4-H leader, trustee, clerk and treasurer of the Granby-Victory Congregational Church, school janitor, librarian, assistant town clerk and as postmaster for 19 years. She also drove the Granby School Bus to Concord for many years. The children have fond memories of stopping to watch moose, deer, ducks and other animals as they traveled through the Victory Bog. She took special pride in being the Town Historian. She loved "her" birds and wildlife. She fed "her flock" of turkeys daily. At age 87 she was still using her chainsaw and weedwacker. She especially loved to tend her flower garden. Hardly a day went by when she didn't have guests dropping in to visit. They could not leave until they had a cup of coffee and something for dessert. Her family was her greatest love. Her grandchildren were the light of her life. All of them have fond memories of their grandmother. Ruth is survived by her six children, Rodney Noble and his wife Kathy of Lunenburg, Connie Quimby and husband Bruce of Concord, Paula Christopher of Guilford, N.H., Claudette Morehouse and friend David Begor of Concord, John Noble of Granby, and Calvin Noble and wife Nellie of Granby. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother Guy and wife Kay; two sisters, Beverly Shores of Granby and Edith Willson of North Concord; sisters-in-law Muriel Pelletier of North Concord, Ellen Noble of Windsor and Mabel Noble of Valparaiso, Indian; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ruth was predeceased by her husband Clyde; her parents, Ceylon and Sallie Shores; and two sisters Leah Austin and Sandra Morehouse. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 19, at 1:30 p.m. at the Granby-Victory Congregational Church. Burial will follow at the convenience of the family. , 48, of Newark and Island Pond, died Sunday evening, May 17, 2009, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born April 3, 1961, in St. Johnsbury, the son of Albert and Alberta (Drown) Bedor. He loved being around his large family and touched the hearts of all who knew him. His smile and sense of humor will not be forgotten. He considered himself to be "a jack of all trades, and master of none." Russell loved working and playing in the great out doors of the Northeast Kingdom. He was a self employed logger for many years. Swimming, boating, fishing, hunting, and cookouts with family and friends brought him much pleasure. He also did carpentry, landscaping, farming, and mechanics over the years. He served the town of Newark for several years as their road commissioner. A devoted father, son, brother, uncle and friend he was greatly loved and will be dearly missed. Survivors include his fiancée, Deborah Stough of Island Pond; three children, Melissa Bedor and fiancée Kevin Irwin of Newark, Barbara Bedor of Laconia, N.H., and Mike Bedor and fiancée Julie Woods of Clinton, Mass.; three grandchildren, Kobe, Caydence, and Ava; his father, Albert Bedor of Wheelock; a brother, David Bedor and wife Stefney of Lyndonville; five sisters, Nancy Lacoss and husband Brian of Lyndonville, Susie Choquette of Lyndonville, Catherine MacPherson of St. Johnsbury, Janet Simpson and husband Mark of Lyndonville, and Patricia Hunter and husband Cary of Lyndonville; a sister in-law, Susan Bedor of Lyndon Center; a brother in-law, Richard McFarland of Newark; many nieces, nephews; and many good friends. He was predeceased by his mother Alberta Bedor in 2000; two brothers, Stephen in 1999, and Paul as an infant; and a brother in-law, Richard Choquette in 1994. A memorial service will be held Friday, May 22, at 4 p.m. at the Union Baptist Church (located on Route 5 south of St. Johnsbury) with the Rev. Tim Pittman officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Newark at 1 p.m. Friday. There will be no visiting hours. , 83, of North Whitehall Township, Pa., died Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at home in the comfort of his family. Born in Fullerton, Pa., he was a son of the late David S. Matthews and Mary Linsin Matthews. He was the husband of Patricia O'Boyle Matthews. He graduated from Whitehall High School in 1944 and was a 1949 graduate of East Stroudsburg College and Pennsylvania State University. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator. He was a teacher of chemistry and physics at Washington High School in Washington, N.J., for eight years before moving to West Morris Regional High School in Chester, N.J. In 1970 he was appointed the first principal of the newly-built Mendham High School in Mendham, N.J. During his high school assignment he was an instructor in the evening division in Farleigh Dickenson University in Madison, N.J. He studied at the Oak Ridge Institute in Nuclear Studies at the University of New Mexico, Rutgers University, the University of Vermont and the Montana College at Bozeman. These summer programs were granted by the National Science Foundation summer fellowship programs. In the summer of 1960 he was employed by Bell Telephone Laboratories as a technical writer to work on the Mercury Project space program. In 1961 he was selected one of two New Jersey science teachers to attend the National Teacher-Student Conference on Peaceful Uses of the Atom in Chicago. He accompanied seven outstanding senior science students to the program. Retiring in 1981, he moved to a home in North Whitehall Township where he served on the planning commission and the zoning hearing board. In his retirement years, he continued studies in Civil War history, resulting in two published books, magazine articles and many requests for speaking engagements. He reenacted Civil War history with the 96th Pennsylvania Regiment. Richard was an instructor in Civil War history at the University of Delaware's Elder hostel summer program and a speaker for the Institute for Learning in Retirement program. He was an invited speaker in three eastern states, local cities, service clubs, schools, church groups and historical societies. He was president of the Eastern Pennsylvania Civil War Roundtable, president of the Whitehall Historical Preservation Society and past Commander of VFW Post 8844. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Matthews; his sons, Richard D. Matthews of Dover, Fla., Donald Matthews and wife, Diane Erskine Matthews of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; daughter, Melinda Matthews Clarkson and husband, Michael Clarkson of Edinburgh, Scotland; three grandsons, Aaron, Corey and Sam, children of Don and Diane; and a granddaughter, Linsin Ann Smith, daughter of Melinda. He was predeceased by sisters Edith Ludwig, Mildred Freeman and Grace Kilmek; brothers David A. Matthews and Donald G. Matthews. An informal memorial "picnic" will be held in celebration of his life on Saturday, June 6, 2009, from 1 to 5 p.m. at 6450 River View Road, in Slatington, Pa.

She was predeceased by her parents, Mabel and Ellis Prescott; her husband, Harry; a sister, Gertrude Ratty; and three brothers, Milton, Charles and Ceylon Prescott. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Madeline Prescott; two nephews, Brian and Wayne Prescott; a niece, Joanne Michaud; and a number of cousins and many friends. She was born on April 5, 1960, the daughter of Gerald and Dorothy (Farr) Barrows. Loriann was a Licensed Nursing Assistant and worked at the Waterford Group Home in Waterford and the Pines Health & Rehab in Lyndonville. She enjoyed going for long walks, traveling, spending time with her family, friends and granddaughter, also her dog, Bandit and cat, Spunky. She is survived by her two daughters, Jamie DeLude of Malden, Mass., and Jasmine DeLude of Newport; her father Gerald Barrows of St. Johnsbury; two sisters Zola "Sandy" Farr of St. Johnsbury, and Donna Pixley of Burlington; a brother Bryson Barrows of Spring Valley, Fla.; one grandchild, Juliana Gentley; an aunt Marion Lovely of Wallingford, Conn.; and her uncle Bernard Barrows of New Britain, Conn. She was predeceased by her mother Dorothy Barrows and a brother Harold Barrows. Services will be held at a later date, at the family's convenience. There will be no visiting hours.

, died on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, with his family by his side of complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 85 years old. A longtime resident of Weston, Mass., he spent his last years on his farm in Waterford. In Vermont, he was one of the founders of the Caledonia Farmers Market in St. Johnsbury. His family includes his wife Marguerite (Honnors) Howe; and his children Linda J. Perrin of Weston, Marcia H. DeWolfe of Westwood, Mass., and Pamela H. Sanborn of Lyndeborough, N.H. He was extremely proud of all of his nine grandchildren, Adam, Caleb, Eliza, Amanda, E.N., Kyle, Becky, Brett and Carrie, who affectionately called him "Pa." He also leaves seven great-grandchildren. His happiest moments were spent in his garden and tending to his animals with his grandchildren helping. A Graveside Funeral Service will be held at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Mass., on Saturday, May 23, at 11 a.m. Family and Friends are welcome. was born Feb. 7, 1911. She was the daughter of George and Ruth (Cargill) Gray. She attended Morgan Schools and graduated from Charleston High School is 1929. She married her high school friend Ward Barrup in 1931 and had a son Rodney. She represented the Town of Morgan in the Vermont Legislature from 1957 to 1959 and represented district 46 for Derby, Holland, and Charleston after reapportionment for 1967 to 1968. She was formally a telephone operator and later became the agent for New England Tel & Tel. She worked as a customs officer for three summer seasons. She worked for a few months during the war in a factory. After leaving the legislature, she became a Real Estate Broker and worked in Real Estate for 23 years. She was a member of Morgan United Church, Farm Bureau, served as School Director from 1940 to 1956, ballot clerk from 1938 to 1953, sec of town republican committee from 1953 to 1956, County Council President from 1951 to 1953 and served on the Farm Bureau Executive Committee. She was also active in community affairs on projects, was the Co-Chairman in the annual Maple Sugar on Snow Supper for more than 30 years. She retired at age 83 and began enjoying home making, gardening and family. Her family was always first in her life and interests. To her, Morgan was the nicest place to grow old in and the people the best and kindest. She was predeceased by her husband Ward in April of 1977. She leaves to grieve her son Rodney and wife Marilyn; granddaughter Janet Slater and husband Bob; grandson Kevin; sister-in-law Elizabeth Gray Applebee. She also had five great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be from 2 to 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Morgan United Church, service to follow calling hours. In lieu of flowers donations in memory to the Morgan United Church.

died peacefully Thursday, May 21, 2009, at his home in Danville. He was born in Aker, Norway, on Sept. 13, 1925, to Paul and Borghilde Thorgalsen. His mother died when he was young, so he was brought up by his step-mother, Magnhilde Olsen Thorgalsen, and his father. Finn came to the United States in the early 1950s and worked several jobs on farms and at a milk plant in Whiting, Vt. He was a longtime Vermont state fish and game warden and later became a hunter safety coordinator/license investigator. He retired due to ill health in 1987 and worked part-time for Phelps Enterprises and the Danville General Store. He married Gail Richardson of Montpelier in 1962. Gail survives him as well as his four children, Lori Schrader and husband Todd, Dane Thorgalsen and Susan Hutchinson, Lisa Hommel and husband Rick, John Thorgalsen and Becky Traynor; and his beloved grandchildren, Matt Hutchinson, Brandi Traynor, Randee Hutchinson, Kristin Schrader, Shane Thorgalsen, Samantha Winters, RJ Hommel, Eli Winters, and Sarah Schrader. He also leaves his close companions, cats Cagney and Lacey, and his dog Yankee. Two special friends, Michael Smith and Dunnie Berube, were very faithful in their visits. Finn wanted to say one message to everybody, "If you smoke, please quit. If you don't smoke, don't start! If I hadn't had COPD, my life would have been much richer!" It was Finn's request there be no observance of his death. However, his life will be remembered at a family and friends gathering at the house in July. of Waterford died unexpectedly at home Thursday, May 21, 2009, at the age of 58. He was born Nov. 11, 1950, in Fitchburg, Mass., the son of the late Baltrus J. and Frances E. (Willoughby) Jancaitis. Jim was a licensed optician from 1971 to 1984 until MS curtailed many of his activities. He was a former member of the St. Johnsbury Kiwanis Club. He is survived by his wife Marianne of Waterford; two sons, Holland J. Jancaitis of Ithaca, N.Y., and Gregory A. Jancaitis and fiancée Jacqueline Stohl of Gorham, Maine; one brother, John E. Jancaitis and wife Betsy of Hull, Mass.; many cousins, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles including a very special aunt Edith of Leominster, Mass. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. , 82, of Gilman, Vt., died unexpectedly late Friday evening May 22, 2009, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Mrs. Sullivan was born in Gilman, Vt., on March 16, 1927, a daughter of Walter and Helen (O'Malley) Boyle. Patty was a lifetime resident of Gilman. In her early years she worked at the Gilman Post Office. She then became a devoted wife and mother. She loved family functions that included music and dancing. One of her favorite things to do was to bake pastries and pies. She was an exceptionally good cook and loved to prepare big meals. She also crocheted, knitted baby clothes and liked to travel. Family members include her husband of 60 years William T. Sullivan Jr. of Gilman, a son William P. "Sully" Sullivan and his wife Elizabeth Ann of North Hampton, N.H., a daughter Gayle MacDonald and her husband Steve of North Danville, Vt., a daughter in-law Jo-Ann Sullivan of Waterford, Vt., four grandchildren, Tammy Cady and her husband Dave of Lyndonville, Vt., Troy Sullivan of Pennsylvania, Robert Briggs of Danville, Vt., and Kimberly Augeri and her husband John of Walden, Vt., six great-grandchildren, Kalob Augeri, Gracie Augeri, Jake Cady, Jordon Cady, Brody Sullivan and Sierra Sullivan, a brother Walter "Buzzy" Boyle of Enfield, Conn., two sisters Margaret Tardy of Enfield, Conn., and Helena "Tootie" Boyle of Gilman and many dear nieces and nephews. , aka Harold Stimson, age 77, died May 22, 2009, at Littleton Regional Hospital of complications resulting from a stroke. He was born June 24, 1931, at the old Littleton Hospital and spent the first 14 years of his life living in Landaff, N.H. There he learned to milk cows and do many farm chores while working for the Albee family. Matt then moved to North Haverhill, and in his early 20s, traveled west and worked at the Aspen Ski Area, and had many adventures doing a variety of jobs in different states. He moved back to New Hampshire and learned on the job to be a car mechanic while working at Jesseman's Garage in Lisbon, N.H. But the love of his life was logging: sawing and felling trees, driving logging trucks, working in a sawmill, and toward the end of his life, continuing to buck and saw wood, and piling it to make a squared away woodshed. Matt did many acts of kindness, always there to help others if they needed it. A celebration of Matt's life will be held privately at a later date.

, 83, of Leesburg, Fla., passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Florida Hospital Waterman. Mrs. Williams was born in St. Johnsbury, the daughter of Elwin and Lottie (Agon) Dresser. Margaret was raised in St. Johnsbury and surrounding townships. She married Raymond Williams on June 11, 1944. Margaret is survived by her husband of 65 years, Raymond; sisters, Beverly Walker and Marjorie Dresser, Gilman; brothers, Elwin Dresser Jr. and Richard Dresser of Gilman; and a host of nieces and nephews, neighbors and friends that will miss her dearly. Prayer Service will be conducted at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in St. Johnsbury on June 11 at 11 a.m. and officiated by Frederick Mayo. died on May 19, 2009, in Bennington, at the age of 91. He was pastor at St. Theresa's Church in Gilman and St. Leo's in Lunenburg from 1951-1961. Fr. Mike will be remembered as being a great priest and a wonderful person.
