, of Landaff, N. H., passed away at the Hospice House facility at Concord Hospital in Concord, N.H., on Oct. 21, 2009, after a long battle with lung cancer. A non-smoker, Mrs. Ransmeier did not learn that she was afflicted until January 2009, after which she battled the disease with grace and gallantry. Born in Gronau, Germany, near Hannover, on Nov. 9, 1942, she grew up in nearby Eime, and attended high school in Alfeld. She subsequently studied business and languages in Hannover, where she earned her certification as an interpreter and translator in German, English and French. She subsequently worked as a translator for Ethicon Sutures, GmbH, a Johnson & Johnson company, at its headquarters in Hamburg for a number of years. After her marriage to Guido G. Schmidt in 1967, she continued her translating work for Ethicon, and also taught German in community language programs for immigrants, as well as English to German speakers. It was at this time that she began her involvement as a soprano with the Rhener Singkreis, a choral group that she continued with until she came to the United States in August 2003. She was also active in the parent-teacher organization for her children's school in Henstedt-Rhen and taught gymnastics to primary school students. As her children grew older, she entered the University of Hamburg Medical School and had completed two and a half years there when her first husband's death obligated her to return to work as Office and Concepts Manager for the Ethicon Endo-Surgery Teaching Facility in Hamburg until she moved to the United States. After a lengthy courtship, she came to New Hampshire and married Michael M. Ransmeier, an attorney in Littleton, N.H., in September 2003. Before her arrival, she had applied for and been accepted as a member of the Docents' Program at the Hood Art Museum at Dartmouth College. She derived enormous satisfaction from that program, which provides tours for school children, senior citizens, and other groups through the exhibits and collections of the museum. She continued to make the 60-mile commute to the museum on a twice-weekly basis until her illness intervened. She also became a member of the North Country Chorus, and continued with it until her declining health prohibited it. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and an avid gardener. The home which she and Michael built in Landaff, with its surrounding flowerbeds and plantings, is a testament to her taste and sense of style. She remained an active tennis player, skier, hiker choral singer and dancer until this spring. Those fortunate enough to visit her home knew her as a gracious and outgoing hostess. Mrs. Ransmeier is survived by her husband, Michael M. Ransmeier, of Landaff, N.H., a son Marcus G. Schmidt and his wife Victoria, of Atlanta, Ga., a daughter Pascale Burmester, and her husband, Niklas, of Hamburg, Germany, a grandson Connor G. Schmidt, and a step-son Joseph M. Ransmeier, of Concord, Vt. A memorial service will be held at Church of the Epiphany, Lisbon, N.H. at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009. Donations in her memory, in lieu of flowers, may be made to The Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH 03755.

Daniel Stewart Fraser

, 96, died Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction. He was born on Nov. 2, 1912, the eldest child of John S. and Helen (Thorburn) Fraser at Deep Hope Farm on Upper Turnpike Road in Norwich, Vt. He graduated from Hanover High School in New Hampshire in 1932 and was married in 1934 to Eliza "Bunny" Stevens. He was proud of many of his accomplishments in life, and most recently liked to remind listeners that he had lived on Turnpike Road longer than anyone currently residing there. Patriarch of his family, Dan is survived by his five children, Betty F. White of Bennington, Vt., Howard D. "Jack" and wife Jean of Norwich, Richard S. "Dick" Fraser and wife Cynthia of South Ryegate, Vt., George D. Fraser and wife Susie of Norwich, and Jane F. Britton and husband Glenn of Norwich. He is also survived by his 21 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, including Davina Dana of Etna, N.H. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, "Bunny"; his sister, Jane F. Lewis; and two brothers, John Stewart "Stew" Fraser Jr., and Andrew Duncan "Dunc" Fraser. Although Dan began his life at Deep Hope Farm on Upper Turnpike Road, the family moved closer to town before Dan was 10. The new home, Gartcraig, was still on Turnpike Road but only a mile from the center of town. His third and final move was just a little further down Turnpike Road at the corner of Turnpike and Moore Lane. Dan's first love was the farm. He always liked working with the animals and being outside. School was a necessary part of his life, but most definitely not a favorite part. He played football at Hanover High School and once told the story of how he felt his hip problems begin after a "fall" in the boys' bathroom there (although there were other young men involved, the story becomes a bit unclear as to how the situation all evolved.) For his first job away from the farm at age 16, Dan was paid $3.50 for nine hours work rebuilding the bridge washed out by the flood of 1927 just below his father's house on Turnpike Road. He worked as a brick mason, as his father, for part of a year in 1932. He then worked as a clerk and delivery person for Merrill's General Store from 1933 until 1955. When Leon Merrill chose to retire, Dan, along with William Whitney "Whit" Hicks, bought the store which they renamed Dan & Whit's General Store. Whit retired in the early 1970s and Dan retired in 1993 after 60 years at the helm with Bunny at his side. He left the business in the capable hands of his sons, George and Jack Fraser, content that Dan & Whit's would remain a family business. Dan served his community over the years with the additional town duties of volunteer fireman, fire warden, tree warden, tax collector, dog officer and several years as Constable. He also served in the Vermont Home Guard in Norwich during WWII. He was a lifetime member, as his parents before him, of Saint Barnabas Church in Norwich. Dan was a very strong-willed, determined man with an incredible work ethic. He spent long hours, week after week, year after year, with his wife at his side, building Dan & Whit's into the thriving concern it remains today. Business and family became almost one and the same as business grew, family grew and all pitched in. The continued support and dedication of many long term employees made a significant impact on the growth and success of Dan & Whit's as well as countless loyal customers. There was never a question in anyone's mind about who was in charge and how things were done. He was also blessed with a very dry sense of humor and an immense memory of stories and jokes. There were very few people you could mention, politicians in particular, where he didn't have a story to tell. Mention just about any lifelong resident's name in the Upper Valley and he could tell you a good deal of their history - where they built their home, lands owned, businesses run, spouses and their families, kids, grandkids. He was, by most accounts, a master at reminiscing. For the last several years, Dan has been a resident of Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction. His family is most grateful to all the staff for kindness and excellent care he received while there. Calling hours will be Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hanover, N.H. A graveside committal service will be held on Friday, Oct. 30, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Hillside Cemetery in Norwich, Vt. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church on Main Street in Norwich with the Rev. Elizabeth Hilgartner officiating. A reception at the Norwich Inn, hosted by his children, will follow the service. Contributions in his memory may be made to the St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 306, Norwich, VT 05055.

Rowley of Richford on April 30, 1944. They renewed their wedding vows on their 65th wedding anniversary this past spring. Larry was very proud of his service in the US Coast Guard and was honorably discharged as Radioman 2nd class. During WWII he was on the last run of the USCG Cutter Bear, an ice cutter vessel built in 1879. This vessel also took Admiral Bird to the Antarctic in the 1930s. Later he sailed on the LST 768 landing ship tank, a very large cargo ship, serving in the Pacific Theatre from 1944-45 with landings in the Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the occupation of Japan. Larry had a lifelong love of ice cream. From 1947-1982 he worked for H.P. Hood and Sons, first as a fountain sales manager and then as an ice cream salesman throughout the New England states. The family moved from Lynn, Massachusetts to St. Johnsbury in 1965. Larry loved the game of tennis and played very well into his later years. Those who played with Larry, usually on Tuesday nights and Sunday mornings, knew of his prowess and referred affectionately to him as the 'grey fox' for his sneaky, playful manner. He was an active member of the Northern Vermont and New Hampshire Iwo Jima Veterans Association. In retirement he finally enjoyed gardening at his home, traveling, and returning to his beloved Vermont and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife Shirley; four sons, Duane Whitehead and wife Barbara of Bellows Falls, Gordon Whitehead and wife Cindy of Worcester, Mass., Bruce Whitehead, wife Denise and their daughter Nella of St. Johnsbury, and Russell Whitehead of St. Johnsbury, former wife Jackie and their daughters Casie and Whitney of St. Johnsbury; two step-sons, Greg Lepine and wife Rachel and their daughter Aubrey of St. Johnsbury, and Thomas Lepine of St. Johnsbury; several nieces and nephews in Canada; and Virginia Delude and Richard Lumbra of the Enosburg area. He was predeceased by three brothers Grant, Horace, and Maurice; and two sisters Leona Irish and Hildred Lumbra; and by a granddaughter Jessica Whitehead. Memorial services will be held next Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church. The pastor, the Rev. John Marshall, will officiate. Burial with military honors will precede the service at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at noon. Memorial contributions could be directed to either David's House, PO Box 660, Lebanon, NH 03766-2805, or to the American Legion Post #58, 11 Maple St., St. Johnsbury, VT 05819.
