, 85, of Morgan died peacefully October 4, 2009, in Lyndonville, comforted by the compassion of his family and many health-care providers. Mr. Anderson was born August 5, 1924, in Palmer, Massachusetts, a son of Anton and Anna (Groop) Anderson. On July 27, 1952, he married Fay Hislop, who survives him. He was a metallurgist with the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company for 30 years. He traveled around New England inspecting cables and ropes at many ski areas. He moved to this area 18 years ago. He enjoyed carpentry work and furniture building. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. In his earlier years, he loved to sing. He proudly served in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He was a member of the Thomas Lodge of Masons in Palmer, Massachusetts. He is survived by his wife, Fay Anderson, of Morgan; by three children: Elaine Anderson of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Sylvia Fjeld of Stowe, and Karl Anderson of Bondsville, Massachusetts; by three grandchildren: Courtney Anderson, Paige Anderson, and Anderson James. He was predeceased by five brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport with the Reverend Michael DeSena officiating. Friends may call on Wednesday from 2 p.m. until the funeral. Interment will take place at a later date in South Cemetery in Belchertown, Massachusetts. , 67, died Saturday morning, October 3, 2009, at his home in Hardwick in the loving care of his longtime partner, Louise Gallant. Mr. Baker was born in Craftsbury on June 24, 1942, a son of Paul and Hazel (Tallman) Baker. He attended school in Craftsbury and went out into the world of work at an early age. He became a very successful logger who was a friend to many and was well respected. He enjoyed his family and friends, the work he did in the woods of rural Vermont, and his sponsorship of Thunder Road racer Paul Hodgdon, and later his son Joel Hodgdon. After his illness kept him out of the woods, he enjoyed riding around to his favorite spots and visiting with friends on the way. He leaves his special friend and caregiver, Louise Gallant, of Hardwick; her children, who he loved as his own, Michael Gallant of Hardwick and Susan Seay of Zionville, North Carolina; Christopher and Travis Gallant, who he loved as his grandchildren; his sister Marcelene "Midget" Brown of Bridgewater, Massachusetts; many nieces and nephews; extended family members; and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Hazel Baker; by two sisters, Marion Lowell and Nadene Maskell; and 6 brothers: Alger, Paul "Buster," twins Clyle and Clyde, Leo, and Dayton Baker. A memorial service will be held at the United Church of Craftsbury on Saturday, October 10, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Alan Parker officiating. Interment will be in the Branch Cemetery in Craftsbury. , 69, of Derby died in his home on Tuesday, September 29, 2009. Mr. Buzzell was born in Randolph on May 1, 1940, the oldest of three sons born to Glen and Marion (Harris) Buzzell. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of New Hampshire, where he met his wife, Dorie. After graduation, they married and moved to Montana where he attended graduate school. In 1964, he and his wife returned to New England where he accepted a position with the Vermont Department of Forest, Parks and Recreation. He was appointed as the Vermont state forester for Orleans County in 1965. He served the residents of the Northeast Kingdom in that capacity for 44 years before retiring on February 28. His love of nature and inquisitive mind enabled him to serve as a brilliant forester, while his sharp wit and ready smile endeared him to those around him. He was an avid lover of nature, animals, music, and the arts. He was an accomplished cook who loved watching others enjoy good food that he prepared or provided. He worked to earn money for guitar lessons as a boy and began performing formally in area establishments while still in high school. He continued playing and singing for both audiences and family for much of his life. He was always generous and loved to make those around him laugh. He is survived by many family members including his brother Max Buzzell of Massachusetts; his children: Roy Buzzell of Middlebury, Patricia and Robert Wood of Newport, New Hampshire, Paul and Monica Buzzell of Huntington, and Rebecca Brown of Newport; his grandchildren: Christopher and Katherine Wood, Felicia, Justin and Sarah Buzzell, Mitchell, Aaron, and Samantha Brown, and Thomas and Kimberly Buzzell; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service took place October 3 with a graveside service immediately following at the Derby Pond Cemetery. , 58, of East Haven died suddenly September 28, 2009, in St. Johnsbury. Mr. Dewey was born in Saranac Lake, New York, on October 21, 1950, to Dorothy (Bush) Dewey and Robert Dewey. On December 16, 1995, he married Catherine Ann Guy, who survives him. He graduated from Benn High School in Bennington and entered the United States Air Force, where he was a sergeant, paratrooper, and a member of the Combat Control Team during the Vietnam War. He was a lumber inspector for Mountain City Lumber Company in Mountain City, Tennessee, and Cersiumo Lumber in Brattleboro. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, being outdoors, and working in the woods. He was an at-large member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Ann Guy, of East Haven; by his mother, Dorothy Dewey, of Bennington; by his children: Robin Dewey of Las Vegas, Nevada, Bambi Baca of Las Vegas, and Nadezda Dewey of Chugiak, Alaska; by two grandchildren, Orion and Meia Baca of Las Vegas; by stepson Jason Guy of Nashville, Tennessee; by stepdaughter Debbie Phipps and her husband, Jimmy, of Trade, Tennessee; by many very special friends; by siblings: Ned Dewey and his wife, Colleen, of Bennington, Bobby Dewey and his wife, Patty, of Bennington, Sandra Sullivan and her companion, Lee Zimmer, of Rensselaer, New York, Brad Dewey and his wife, Cathy, of Wesley Chapel, Florida, Debbie Kiernan and her husband, Rick, of Slate Hill, New York, and Julia Kraus and her husband, Andrew, of Westfield, Massachusetts; and by several nieces and nephews. Paul Emile Blair

, 86, of Williston died and came to the end of his earthly life on September 18, 2009, following an extended period of declining health. Mr. Blair was born November 23, 1922, near May Pond in Barton, a son of Edmund and Aldea Blair of Quebec. In 1945, he married Helena Anderson, and they became dairy farmers in West Glover, Panton, and Williston at Taft's Corners. In 1960 the family pulled together after a devastating barn fire, from which they saved most of their cows. A neighbor farmer leased them a barn while a new one was being built. They sold their cows in 1978 and subsequently developed Blair Park, the first major commercial development in Williston. He was president of the local branch of the National Farmers Organization. He was an avid ice and lake fisherman and enjoyed hunting and maple sugaring. He was a parish member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Winooski. He was the quintessential farmer, skilled in fixing anything at any time under any conditions and often better than the original manufacturer. He is survived by his wife, Helena, of 64 years; by his children: Francis, Ronald and his wife, Janet, Carol, Rose and her husband, Dan, Mark, Lawrence, and Michael and his wife, Kathy; by seven grandchildren; by five great-grandchildren; by his sister Simone Parenteau of Meriden, Connecticut; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; by his daughter Corena; and by brothers: Leo, Adrien, and Noel. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated September 23 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Interment followed in East End Cemetery in Williston. , 86, died and went peacefully to Heaven to be with Velma, his beloved wife, on October 3, 2009. Mr. Curtis was in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Before and after the war he worked at Union Butterfields for 44 years. He was a member of the Elks Club and the Derby Line Fire Department for 25 years. He loved to fish, hunt, play cards, and read anything he could get his hands on. One of the things he loved most was being a brother in the Golden Rule Lodge 5 in Stanstead, Quebec, where he was a member for 49 years. He climbed Owl's Head for more than 30 consecutive years. He and his wife spent 16 winters in Florida. His two beloved children, Laurel Cadieux of Derby and Richard Curtis of Pittsford, survive him. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Shawn, Sara, Scott, Bethany, and Ryan; by great-grandchildren: Alyssa, Mariah, Cameron, Cassandra, Christopher, Julia, Anne, Brittany, Nikia, Michaela, Julia, Riley, and Dylan; by his brother Don and his wife, Ferol; by sisters-in-law: Gerry Barber and her husband, Louis, Phyllis Derick, Gertrude Cross, and Ruby Davies; and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and Walter Curtis; by his brother Lawrence; and by twin sisters, Doris and Joyce. Funeral services will be held at the Derby Line Village Hall on Saturday, October 17, at 2 p.m. A celebration of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis' lives will follow the service. , 84, of Barton died October 10, 2009, in Glover. Mrs. Drown was born June 12, 1925, in Newport Center, a daughter of Elmo and Alice (Sherlaw) Crandall. In 1947 she married Grosvenor "Bud" Drown, who predeceased her in 1964. She cooked for the hot lunch program at Barton Academy for many years and for Bonnie at the mini-mart in Barton. She was a clerk at Cook's Market in Orleans. She loved to cook, garden, and knit to the benefit of her family, neighbors, and friends. She was always ready to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. She loved her family and enjoyed their visits as well as going to their homes to visit. She is survived by three children: Brent Drown of Barton, Bonnie Bousquet and her husband, Lou, of Florida, and Brian Drown of Barton; by grandchildren: Jason and his wife, Suzanne, of St. Johnsbury, Jodi Morley and her husband, John, of Orleans, Joshua and Alice Drown of Orleans, Erin and Lyle McGee of Enosburg, and Deveney and Mike Wolfe of Ohio; by great-grandchildren: Taylor, Brooke, Isaiah, Zeke, Zoe, Benny, Avery, and Dalton; by sister Patricia Amato and her husband, Mike, of Tennessee; and by several nieces and nephews. , 81, of Newport died October 6, 2009, in Newport. Mrs. Guillette was born February 16, 1928, in Irasburg, a daughter of Hulderic and Dorilla (Hebert) Girouard. On June 26, 1948, she married Henry Guillette, who predeceased her on January 20, 2004. She loved to dance, go to the Elks Club with her husband, and play piano. She enjoyed following her son's band, The Silver Eagles. She spent most of her life working around the farm and raising her family. In later years she especially delighted in having members of the family come to visit and was very proud of the grandchildren and their accomplishments. She is survived by her children Marcel Guillette and his wife, Francine, of Derby and Armand Guillette and his wife, Teresa, of Derby; by grandchildren: Anita McGowan and her husband, Jeremy, of Ohio, Marcy Guillette of Derby, Rene Picard and her husband, Nathan, of Derby, Brandon Guillette of Derby, Tonya Brown and her husband, Arnie, of Glover, Amanda Pepin and her husband, Mike, of Troy, and Armand Guillette and his wife, Jennifer, of Derby; by 11 great-grandchildren; by sisters Rose Desmarais of Orleans and Oda Fortin of Massachusetts; and by several nieces and nephews. , called Tony by friends and family, 65, died suddenly near his home in Seguin, Texas, on September 29, 2009. Mr. Weisman was born May 31, 1944, in Hidalgo County, near the Mexican border, where his grandparents had a dairy farm. His father became a ranch manager for the Oblate Order, thus he moved when very young to the Texas hill country near New Braunfels, Texas. He is mourned by his wife, Sylvia Ann Manning, who knew him since their high school years in New Braunfels; by daughter Leecia Manning; by granddaughter Stella Manning; and by countless friends, colleagues, and family members. Tony and Sylvia recently acquired a house in Barton, which was to be their retirement home. With her, he began to visit Vermont, and thus had friends in Glover and Barton who he held in high regard. He also had new friends in Quebec City. He worked as a construction manager. In 2008 he was designated a Leed accredited professional by the Green Building Certification Institute. His hope was that through better practices and methods people would save their natural home.

She traveled all over the world with her former husband. She moved to California, then to Miami, and back to Vermont to be with her family. She loved plants, birds, and art. , 70, of East Albany died at Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Center in Newport on Wednesday, October 14, 2009, following a long illness. Mr. Brewster was born in Barton on February 25, 1939, a son of Charles and Sylvia (Sheltra) Brewster. He attended school in Craftsbury and served with the Seabees in the U.S. Navy. He lived in Mesa, Arizona, for 30 years where he had been a herdsman and a truck driver. He drove double tankers of cream to Los Angeles and then drove for Ambassador throughout the western states. He moved back east to Connecticut in 1985 and met and married Lisa Viel. They moved to Vermont in the early 1990s. Besides his wife, Lisa, he leaves two sons, Robert Brewster Jr. and his wife, Jonnie, of Westfield and Rodney Brewster of Irasburg; two daughters, Ronda Brewster of Derby and Sylvia Brewster of East Albany, who is attending Bay Path College in Massachusetts; brother Ray Brewster and his wife, Margaret, of Interlaken, New York; sister Marion "Kay" Goodridge and her husband, Gilbert, of Craftsbury; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was predeceased by his parents; and by his brother Charles Brewster Jr. of Arizona. A graveside service was held at the Albany Village Cemetery October 17 with the Reverend Rona Kinsley officiating. , 66, of Albany died peacefully October 14, 2009, in Albany. Ms. Broe was born March 5, 1943, in Richford, a daughter of Bert and Ruby (Hughes) Broe. In her younger years, she enjoyed working on puzzles, doing embroidery, watching Christian shows on television, listening to music, and talking on the telephone with her family. Most of all, she enjoyed family visits. She is survived by three brothers: Larry Broe of Coventry, Bruce Broe of Chicago, Illinois, and Myron Broe of St. Johnsbury; by her sister Diane Champagne of Cocoa, Florida; by special niece and caregiver Rosemary Goodridge and her husband, Kevin, of Albany; and by several other nieces and nephews. , 79, of Lowell, Massachusetts, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at Life Care Center of Merrimack Valley in Billerica, Massachusetts. Mrs. Eno was born in Dracut, Massachusetts, on April 2, 1930, a daughter of Leo J. and Anna M. (Perras) Ouellette, founders of the Leo J. Ouellette and Son Funeral Home. She shared ownership of the funeral home with the her beloved husband, N. George Eno Jr., and her brother Maurice L. Ouellette. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Louis de France Church in Swansea, Massachusetts. She was active in the parish as co-chairman of the carousel, the Christmas fair, and the St. Louis Guild. She attended St. Louis Grammar School and St. Louis Academy in Lowell. She was an avid volunteer and active member of many clubs, including Jeanne Mance and the D'Youville Manor Ladies Guild. She enjoyed attending plays at the Merrimack Repertory Theatre. She loved to bowl with her Tuesday night league for years. She worked as a medical technologist at the health department and the former St. Joseph's Hospital. She was manager of Canal Apartments for several years. She worked at Catholic Charities in the grandparent program. Her greatest happiness in her life was her family. She leaves her daughters Michelle Webster and her husband, Stephen, of Pellham, New Hampshire, and Celeste Nelson and her husband, Donald, of Irasburg; grandchildren: Taylor, Kyle, Curtis, and Casey Webster of Pellham and Meghan, Nicole, and Douglas Nelson of Irasburg; two sisters, Pauline Woodward and her husband, Rodman, of Florida and Therese Swanson of Billerica; sister-in-law Shirley Dalphond and her husband, Albert, of Dracut; and beloved pets: Max, Webby, and Blondie. Mr. Toupin was born January 3, 1937, in Bound Brook, New Jersey, a son of Mark and Mary (Orlando) Toupin. On July 30, 1955, he married Edith Hoffman, who survives him. He entered the United States Navy on August 31, 1954, and was honorably discharged on November 27, 1957. He served his country during the Korean War. He was an office supervisor for Mack, Inc., in New Jersey, and he worked in the office of the adult learning center in Newport. He enjoyed fishing, using computers, and doing crossword puzzles in the newspaper. He is survived by his wife, Edith A. Emerson Charles Lathe Sr.

, 79, of Albany died October 21, 2009, in Newport, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Lathe was born in Holland on November 17, 1929, a son of George and Florence (Edwards) Lathe. He grew up on a farm in Holland and went to elementary school there. He graduated third in the class of 1946 from Derby Academy; he also had the highest grade in 1946. In 1951 he was drafted into the U.S. Army Medical Corps and served until 1953 in Korea. Upon his discharge he went to work at the Vermont State Hospital as an attendant. In 1960 he moved to his father's farm in Albany to help him with the farm work. He and his brothers bought the farm, and he eventually purchased his brothers' shares. He worked from 1960 to 1989 at Ethan Allen in Orleans; sickness forced an early retirement. On September 9, 1954, he married Nettie Irene Halsall, who predeceased him on March 24, 2002. He is survived by his children: Ronald George Lathe of Orleans, Emerson Lathe Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Newport, Linda Walther and her husband, Jay, of Utah, Lawrence Lathe of Morrisville, Lisa Hurd and her husband, Sheldon, of Orleans, Shirlene Lathe of St. Johnsbury, Donna Sherlaw of Eden, David Lathe and his companion, Dawn, of Eden, and Deborah-Jean Lathe of Newport; by 24 grandchildren; by ten great-grandchildren; by his sister Marion Inis Varney of Westfield; and by his brother Clifton George Lathe of Massachusetts. He was predeceased by his daughter Florence Angelina Lathe in 1962; by two sisters, Beatrice Estella Hammond and Irene May Beaudry; and by his brother Carroll Lathe. Funeral services were held October 24 with Brother Eric Worthington officiating. Interment with full military honors followed in Albany Village Cemetery. Wayland Delbert Smith

, 91, of Bushnell, Florida, died October 16, 2009, at the Lane Purcell Hospice Center in Summerville, Florida, following a lingering illness. Mr. Smith was born in Glover in 1918, a son of Mildred and Delbert Smith, who both predeceased him in 1985. He graduated from Barton Academy in 1936, one of 32 in his class. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army from 1943 to 1945. He was a medical clerk with the 127th Evacuation Hospital assigned to the 7th Army while stationed in Germany. He was one of the first three medical soldiers to enter the Dachau Concentration Camp in Germany following its liberation by the U.S. Army in 1945. He processed concentration camp prisoners, assessing their health and helping to treat the thousands of emaciated prisoners before they were released for further medical attention outside the camp. While touring the camp he found no English speaking prisoners of war. All the prisoners were malnourished, but they were all happy to see their liberators. "They smiled and waved at us," Mr. Smith once relayed to family members, "and some prisoners asked for food and cigarettes. But most of them were so weak they couldn't say anything. I had never experienced anything like that before." He lived and worked in Barton, where he raised his children with his first wife, Shirley Stiles Smith; they divorced in 1978, and she died in 1993. He worked at the Barton Cleaners and Ethan Allen in Orleans until his retirement. He was a member of the Barton United Church, where he sang in the choir, and he was a master Mason. He enjoyed playing golf, raising a garden, and working on the family home in Barton. He moved to Bushnell in 1980 with his wife, Monique, after their marriage in Barton. While in Bushnell the couple became involved with the Moose Club where they both rose to the top of the club's leadership ladder. They enjoyed many trips together with members of the Moose, including Hawaii three times, Las Vegas, Nevada, Biloxi, Mississippi, Branson, Missouri, and Memphis, Tennessee, to name a few. He worked part time for the Purcell Funeral Home in Bushnell for several years before retiring again. He is survived by Monique Vanier Smith, his wife of 30 years; by his brother Arnold Smith and his wife, Marge, of Bushnell; by his three children: Sharon Adams and her special friend, Ken Van Tassel, of New Port Richey, Florida, Dale Smith and his fiancee of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and Carol Racine and her husband, Donald, of Derby Line; by three grandchildren: Shelley Smith Tomaino of Milton, Sean Smith of Boston, Massachusetts, and Emily Racine Crawford and her husband, Merle Jr., of Barton; by great-grandson Joey Crawford of Barton; by his wife's family: Andrew Vanier and his wife, Sandi, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Dean Vanier and his wife, Shellie, of Canaan, New Hampshire, John Vanier of Lebanon, New Hampshire, and Alan Vanier and his wife, Sue, of Newport Center. He was predeceased by his older brother Raymond Smith of Orlando, Florida. Graveside services were held at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell October 23. , 75, of Glover, beloved husband of Shirley Stone, died October 22, 2009, at the Fanny Allen Medical Center in Colchester. Mr. Stone was born November 3, 1933, in Glover, a son of Elwin and Alice (Drew) Stone. On December 27, 1951, he married Shirley Neil, who survives him. For most of his life he was a self-employed logger. Logging was his life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, working with his farm animals and horses, working in the woods, and most especially, spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Stone, of Glover; by his children: Arland Stone Jr. of Glover, Brian Stone and his wife, Micheline, Bruce Stone, and Terry Stone and his wife, Rose, all of Barton, Gail Chase and her husband, Ron, of Colchester, Diane Landry and her husband, Clem, of Irasburg, and Candy Bacon and her husband, Doug, of Barton; by 16 grandchildren; by 17 great-grandchildren; by his siblings: Dan Stone of Massachusetts, Owen Stone of Connecticut, Vanessa Shuffelt of Indiana, and Beckley Stone of Connecticut; by numerous nieces and nephews; by sisters-in-law Beverly Cleveland of Newport and Theresa Stone of Barton; and by brother-in-law Raymond Sweeney and his wife, Donna, of Glover. He was predeceased by his parents; by brothers: Hugh, Dean, Warner, Olen, and Gordon; and by his beloved dog Oddie. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 28, at the Church of the Nazarene in Newport with the Reverend Paul Prince officiating.
