, 66, of Wells River, Vt., died following her courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), on Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at her home, surrounded by her family. Carolyn was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., on Dec. 1, 1942, to Harold James and Madeline Beryl (Steele) Moore and was a 1960 graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy. She married Robert James Brock on May 4, 1963. Carolyn worked as a secretary for Charles Millar Plumbing Wholesalers in St. Johnsbury, and later assisted her husband in the business at Thomas Pharmacy in Wells River. Carolyn was a member of the Congregational Church of Wells River UCC and had recently served as the financial secretary. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother. She spent time attending her grandchildren's games and providing a safe environment for her children and grandchildren after school. Carolyn had a great fondness for animals, always having dogs and cats, mostly strays. She was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Madeline Moore. Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Robert J. Brock of Wells River; their children, James R. Brock and wife Kristine of Brookline, N.H., Jacqueline "Jackie" Hodge of Newbury, Vt., and Dianne Brock of Wells River; seven grandchildren, William, Christian, Matthew, Kaysie, Jaymie, Mikayla, and Michael; one brother, John Steele Moore and wife Christine of Springfield, Va., their son David Moore, and Christine's daughter Catherine Schuetz. Calling hours will be on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, from 6-8 p.m., at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch St., Woodsville, NH. , 79, of Country Village-Genesis Elder Care Center, Lancaster, N.H., died peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, after a brief illness, surrounded by his family. Born Nov. 17, 1929, in Colebrook, a son of Victor and Jessie (Hanson) Gadwah. He was a longtime resident of Groveton, N.H. and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Before retiring he worked for many years as a machine tender for James River Corp. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved playing cribbage, watching ball games and movies. He also liked going out to eat and then to take a ride. He liked to spend time with his family and travel. Vern is survived by his wife Bonnie Gadwah of Groveton; his children Janice Merrill of Manchester, N.H.; Jeanne Smith and husband Larry of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; Mitchell Gadwah and wife Jill of Manchester, N.H.; Joanne Legere of Bristol, Conn.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his step-children Shelba Tetu of Littleton; Robert Tetu of Honolulu, Hawaii; Leora Rivers of Groveton, N.H., and Raylene Tetu of Malden, Mass.; six step-grandchildren; six siblings Mervyn Gadwah of Colebrook, N.H.; Norman Gadwah of West Thompson, Vt.; Victor Gadwah Jr. of Meriden, Conn.; Hilda Stouffer of Boston, Va.; Esta Huntley of Meriden, Conn., and Glendon Gadwah of Boscawen, N.H.; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife Vivian (Donovan) Gadwah; his parents and two brothers Clement Gadwah and Leonard Gadwah. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, from 2-6 p.m. at the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home in Groveton. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the St. Francis Xavier Church in Groveton. passed away Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center at the age of 69. Born in Wolcott on Oct. 27, 1939, Walter graduated from St. Johnsbury Trade School in 1957. He spent most of his years working and living in Connecticut (1961-1972) and North Carolina (1972 -2005) where he retired from Klopmann Mills in Ramseur. He returned to St. Johnsbury three years ago to be near family. A big all-around sports fan, no one was a bigger Boston Red Sox fan than Walter. He is survived by his mother Mrs. Myrle Leithead and husband Robert of St. Johnsbury; six children, Roxanne Truhart of East Concord, Deborah Whitcomb of Branford, Conn., Sandra Kennedy of Stark, N.H., Maureen Garrison and husband Robert of DeSoto Mo., Jeff Whitcomb of Concord, Michael Whitcomb of Goldston N.C.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Janet Fenoff of St. Johnsbury, Jean Peck of Ft. Orange, Fla., Judy Ann Lamont and husband Frank of Holly Hills, Fla.; three brothers Bernard Whitcomb of Sacramento, Calif., Richard Whitcomb of Derby, Gary Leithead and wife Bonnie of Lyndonville; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a grandson Patrick Garrison, two nephews Rance Peck and Chad Lumbra; sister-in-law Barbara Whitcomb, and brother-in-law Charles "Bob" Fenoff. The family would like to acknowledge the loving care extended to Walter by Dr. Mary Ready, the nurses and staff at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center during his courageous fight with cancer. , 82, of Burke, passed away Sunday morning, Jan. 18, 2009, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon, surrounded by her family. She was born July 8, 1926, in Walden, the daughter of Charlie and Inez (Bidwell) Thompson. On Dec. 25, 1952, she married Robert G. Simpson. Thelma spent many years crocheting and knitting, making doilies, mittens, socks, sweaters, and many other things to which she gave to family and friends. A good cook and homemaker, she is remembered for her delicious chicken pies and rolls. A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she touched the hearts of those who knew her. She enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, following her husband Bob on his trap lines, and feeding and watching wild birds, squirrels, and other wildlife. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Robert "Bob" Simpson of Burke; their son, Larry Simpson and wife Bunny of Lyndon; two grandchildren, Kevin Simpson and wife Kim, and Michelle Nichols and husband Mike; three step grandchildren, Kathy Humphrey, Randall Humphrey, and CeCe Humphrey; two great-grandchildren, Jason Simpson, and Bailey Marie Nichols; her devoted sister, Madelene Robinson of Lyndonville; five brothers, Bud Thompson and wife Arlene of Craftsbury, Lloyd Thompson of Sheffield, Richard Thompson and wife Huguette of Sheffield, Gerald Thompson of White River Jct., and Donald Thompson and wife Pearline of Connecticut; her in-laws, Louise Thompson of Sheffield, Donald Simpson and wife Sue of Sutton, Steve Simpson and wife Brenda of Kirby, and Nancy Vincent and husband Gordon of Milton; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, and a brother, Wayland Thompson. A gathering of friends and family will be held Thursday afternoon Jan. 22 from 2-4 p.m., at the Guibord Funeral Home. , age 76, of Franconia, N.H., passed away on Jan. 19, 2009, after a period of declining health, at the Lafayette Center in Franconia. Phyllis was born on March 12, 1932, a daughter to Leon and Doris Stevens, in Berlin, N.H. She graduated Valedictorian in 1950 from Lisbon High School. She went on to graduate from Mary Hitchcock Nursing School in Hanover in 1953 and held various positions as an RN throughout her 43-year career, including several years at Littleton Regional Hospital, Director of North Country Home Health Agency, Lafayette Genesis Center in Franconia, and Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield. Phyllis loved to read and kept her mind alert not only with the bags of books from the library book sale, but also loved word games, crossword puzzles, cryptograms, and logic puzzles. Surviving family members include two sons, Clark and Kendall Rogers, both of Littleton; one daughter, Kathryn Rogers of Manchester; four grandchildren Tanya, Katelyn, James, and Nicholas; and one great-granddaughter, Hannal, whom she preferred to call "Cookie." The family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan. 22, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Pillsbury Funeral Home located at 101 Union St. in Littleton. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 23, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Fr. Daniel Sinibaldi as Celebrant. , 64, of Danville, died at his home with Jim and Evelyn Hastings in Greenbanks Hollow in Danville, on Jan. 18, 2009, ending a life-long struggle with schizophrenia, out of which sometimes emerged glimpses of the bright, sweet person he was as a child. He was born on April 3, 1944, in Goldsboro, N.C., the eldest son of the late Henry and Nancy Balivet. He graduated from Sterling School, Craftsbury Common, and attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C., as well as Lyndon State College. He is survived by his two brothers, Robert F. Balivet of Anchorage, Ala., E. Tobias Balivet of Danville; his two sisters, Jean B. Roper of Raphine, Va., and Jennifer B. Johnston of Anchorage; and his good friend and caregiver Jim Hastings. He is also survived by seven nephews and five nieces as well as 10 grand nephews and nieces. The family would like to thank the town of Danville for understanding Jamie and supporting his place in the community. The family extends special gratitude to Evelyn and Jim Hastings for their care of and devotion to Jamie. A service will be held at the Danville Congregational Church - UCC, later in the spring when family can attend. Committal will follow at Danville Green Cemetery. , of Island Pond, died unexpectedly on Jan. 14, 2009, at the of age 77. Shirley was born Oct. 2, 1931 in Sutton and was the daughter of Silas and Mildred (Bean) Scott. Shirley graduated from Newport Center High School and was the class valedictorian in 1949. She joined the Army Corp. in 1950 and attained the rank of Sergeant First Class in 13 months. In 1952 she married Malcolm Bone and then requested a discharge. To this marriage were born three sons, Michael R. Bone and wife Michele of Ft. Myers, Fla., Stephen Bone and wife Cindy of Cape Coral, Fla., and James Bone and wife Linda of Island Pond. She later married Jacob P. Kocis, Jr. They had four children, Linda Delabruere and husband Leonard of Island Pond, Jacob P. Kocis III and wife Sherry of Island Pond, Jody Smith and husband Thaddeus of Rutland, Janice Kocis and Julio Perez of Franklin, Mass. She has 30 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is survived by sisters Annabelle Dreher of Florida, Margaret Barnes, of Florida, Charlotte Powers and husband Dean of West Charleston, Birdena Collins and husband Raymond of Willoughby, and lots of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother, father, two brothers, George and Silas Scott, Jr., and three sisters, Mildred, (Goldie) Collins, Wilma Dopp, and Maxine Corey. She was member of Brighton Post # 84 for 29 years, past member of Brighton Rescue and volunteered for a lot of campaigns, the American Cancer Society, the Red Cross and many more. She worked at the US Post Office in Florida, waitressed, Newport Plastics, Ethan Allen, and Senior Meals in Island Pond for years. She was a volunteer driver for the Department of Aging Veterans Van to White River, then drove for Rural Community Transportation. Shirley is best known for her kindness and generosity. She loved knitting, puzzles, cooking, bingo, traveling and helping her children anytime they needed. More of her favorite activities included caring for houseplants, walking and being active. She was loved by all and will be greatly missed. Visitation will be held Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home 4670 Darling Hill Road, Newport on Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, from 7 to 9 p.m. where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 24, with the Rev. , After a long and courageous battle of 15 years with a rare brain tumor, Tim Clark went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 19, 2009. Tim was born on Nov. 28, 1955, in Hartford, Conn., to Marjorie (Kenworthy) and Melville Clark. He lived in Connecticut until the early 80s when he moved to Vermont. He loved being a Vermonter and wouldn't have considered living anywhere else. On Sept. 5, 1987, he married Jane (Lafleur) Quintal, who survives him. He is also survived by five children; William of Newport; Eric and his wife Ashley of Quincy, Mass.; Adam of Cleveland, Tenn.; and Todd and Gina of West Charleston. Other survivors include his father, Melville and wife Virginia of Ocala, Fla.; his brother David and wife Jan of Pittsburgh, Pa.; sisters Cindy Ober and husband Les of Torrington, Conn.; and Rebecca Antonacci and husband Frank of Somersville, Conn. His in-laws who provided comfort and support during his illness include father-in-law Maurice Lafleur of Orleans; mother-in-law Rejeanne Leblond of Derby Line; sisters-in-law Joanne Williams and husband Andre of Orleans; Julie Jacobs and husband David of Holland; and brother-in-law Joe Lafleur and wife Audrey of Newport Center. Tim is survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as many brothers and sisters in Christ, including close friends Robert Guyer and Gregg and Julie Wood. Tim was predeceased by his mother Marjorie in 1987. Tim was a strong proponent of Christian education and four of his children attended United Christian Academy in Newport, with three of them continuing their education at Christian colleges. Gina is currently a sophomore at UCA. Tim served on UCA's board of directors from 1995 until 2007, when his health prevented him from continuing. Tim was passionate about his job as General Manager at Metal Flex in Newport. In 1982, Barrie Hume decided to start his own company and hired Tim as his Sales Manager. Initially, Tim worked from his home in Connecticut and after a year moved to Vermont. Metal Flex was an important part of Tim's life. In addition to his family, Tim loved the Mustang he had restored. On sunny summer days, you could find Tim cruising in his '66 Mustang, and it was often parked in front of The Brown Cow, his favorite lunch spot. Calling hours will be held on Friday, Jan. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church on the Quarry Road in Derby, where the memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 1 p.m., with Rev. Glenn Saaman and Rev. Richard Whitehill officiating. , a resident of Bethlehem, N.H., died after a brief illness at Littleton Regional Hospital, Sunday, Jan. 18, at 9:50 a.m. Born Feb. 11, 1943, in Wilmington, N.C., to Teddy Foley and William Heinemann (the latter a Major in the US Army and West Point Graduate). The family, which includes an older sister, moved to Colombia, South America, in 1945 where William became employed by Hiram Foley's Electrical Company. Tom attended Colombian Elementary and Jr. High Schools in Medellin and Bogota. He graduated high school in the US, from Georgetown Preparatory (Jesuits) in Bethesda, Md. The Heinemann family moved back to the US in 1963 and shortly thereafter, Tom enlisted in the US Navy at the naval station in Norfolk, Va. He was a four-year sailor with the Mediterranean 6th Fleet, on the US Terrebonne Parish (LST 1156); the 6th fleet was headed home for Christmas but was turned back to the Mediterranean because of the incident at the Gulf of Tonkin. Tom was honorably discharged Jan. 1, 1967, and then attended as well as graduated from Plymouth State College with a BS in Business. Among Tom's several employers were: Ruggles Fuel Company, Continental 93, the "Fabulous" Eastgate Motor Lodge (then owned by friends Yvonne and Jere Eames). Tom was working (several years for TJ Max (employers and employees who also befriended him) when he became too ill to work beginning of January, 2009. Tom is survived by his daughter Marianne, married to Chuck Farr, they have two small children Zachary and Emily and reside in North Haverhill, N.H.; his ex-spouse Mary Elizabeth Morrill also of North Haverhill; a sister Erin Heinemann married to Edward Hennessey, they have one son John, married to Erin Tapper and they in turn have two small children Claire and Luke, all residing in Littleton, N.H., (John and family are recent transplants from San Diego, Calif.); a surviving maternal cousin (of three) Sr. Patty McCarthy of Richmond, Va., as well as other relatives across the US. A Mass Christian Burial will be held at St. Rose of Lima Church in Littleton on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Littleton Regional Hospital Charitable Foundation.

, 89, of Congress Street in Claremont, N.H., died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at Sullivan County Healthcare in Unity following a period of failing health. He was born in St. Johnsbury, July 6, 1919, the son of Ernest J. and Leonide (Fredette) Cote. After serving with the United Navy in WWII, Robert married the former Juliette A. Dumond on Oct. 20, 1945. After the death of his first wife, Julie, he married Edith Bore on Jan. 2, 1999. Surviving family members include his wife, Edith (Bore) Cote, of Claremont; a son, Jerry Cote of White River, Jct; three daughters, Judith Thibodeau of Litchfield, Joanne Cote of Virginia, and Janet Peters of Newbury; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a step-son, Harvey of Charlotte, N.C.; a step-daughter, Valerie Miller of Newport; three step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gertrude Reanaud of St. Johnsbury and Jeannette Emmons of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Robert was predeceased by a daughter, Jacqueline Cote; four brothers, Leo, Alcide, Louis, and Alban; and a sister, Rita Mancinci. Robert had been a Claremont resident since 1946. In 1946, he and his wife started their own business, which would become well-known throughout the area as Cote's Restaurant. A few year later, they built Cote's Motel. They owned and operated the restaurant until 1967. Over the years, Robert was honored by being presented with the Granite State Best Menu award, and the Small Businessman of the Year award. After retiring, Robert did private catering. He was a member of St. Mary's Parish, a member of the Lion's Club, lifetime member of the Claremont Moose Lodge 1201, Past Grand Knight, Father Cote Council 1820, Knights of Columbus and member of the Fourth Degree Assembly. Edith and Robert were able to travel to many places before his health required him to become a resident at Sullivan County Healthcare. Edith was very doting in his care and visited him almost every day for hours while he was in the nursing home. A very special niece, Donna Matteau of Nashua, also survives Robert.

, 83, of West Street, Groveton, N.H., died suddenly on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at Week's Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, N.H. Born Dec. 4, 1925, in North Stratford, N.H., a daughter of Charlie and Florence (Wright) Taylor, she has been a resident of Groveton since 1957 when she married John "Jack" Ryan. She was raised in Brunswick, Vt., and graduated from Stratford Public School in 1944. She attended two years of college in North Hampton. Sally worked for several years at the Littleton Stamp and Coin as a secretary until 1957. Then she worked part time at the Groveton Elementary School in the cafeteria and for Jack at the garage keeping books until he sold the business in 1985. Sally is a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, post # 17. She enjoyed golfing, gardening, bowling and playing cards. She was an avid sports fan especially of the Groveton Eagles and the Boston Red Sox. Sally is survived by her husband of 51 years John "Jack" Ryan of Groveton; her two daughters, Teri Woodward and husband Rick, and Jana Marshall and husband Richard, all of Groveton; grandchildren Haley St. Cyr and husband Corey of Dalton, N.H., Ashley Clauss and husband Jared of Groveton, and Allison Woodward of Deerfield, N.H.; great-grandchildren, Ian St. Cyr and Taylor Clauss; step-grandchildren Rebecca Marshall of Manhattan, N.Y.; Nikki Cormier and husband Al of Lancaster, and Samantha Canton and husband Chris of Groveton; step-great-grandchildren Kylie Cormier, Colin Canton and Parker Canton; and one sister-in-law Valerie Wallen and Husband Robert of Venice, Fla. Roland Andrew Meredith

, 93, of Island Pond, died peacefully Jan. 20, 2009, in Newport. He was born June 26, 1915, in Lerned Plain, Quebec, a son of David Thomas and Myrtle (Sample) Meredith. On Nov. 22, 1939, he married Norma Christie who survives him. Mr. Meredith was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Island Pond for 65 years and the National Rifle Association for 50 years. He was also a member of the North American Hunting Club. He came to Vermont in 1936 and worked for his Uncle John Young in the lumber business. After graduating the Stanstead College business administration program, he spent several months in Detroit, Mich., in accounting. Realizing he did not want to raise his family there, he came back to Island Pond to work on the Canadian National Railroad. Upon retiring from the Railroad, he became involved in the Island Pond water department for over 14 years, during which time the town replaced most of the main water lines and service to most of the homes. An avid hunter and fisherman, he loved the outdoors. He also enjoyed gardening and carpentry. He designed and built his own house in 1950 and always enjoyed having family and friends at his home sharing great food and making fond memories. He is survived by his wife Norma Meredith of Island Pond, five children, Barbara Hodsden and her husband Wayne of Lockport, N.Y., Sandra Nadeau and her husband Douglas of Fitchburg, Mass., Wayne Meredith of Island Pond, Brenda Johnson and her husband Paul of Ashburnham, Mass., Scott Meredith and his wife Kathryn of Island Pond; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Frederic Meredith and his wife Anna of Green Valley, Ontario, Canada. He was predeceased by two sisters, Pauline Lane and Olive Meredith. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at the Christ Episcopal Church in Island Pond with the Rev. , 74, of French Road, Dalton, N.H., died at his home on Tuesday, Jan. 20, with his family by his side. Mr. Sweeney was born in West Stewartstown, N.H., on Aug. 15, 1934, a son of Edwin and Cora (Colby) Sweeney. Dean grew up in Whitefield, N.H., and moved to Dalton in 1968. He owned and operated his Auto Body shop for over 40 years. He was involved in all aspects of the town, including a volunteer member of the Dalton Fire Department and served 18 years as a selectman. He truly loved his town. He was an avid hunter; he enjoyed leatherwork, masonry, traveling and especially playing mini golf with the kids. Family members include his wife Sharon (Gilman) Sweeney of 52 years; three sons, Kevin Sweeney of Dalton, Brian Sweeney of Whitefield, and Mitchell Sweeney of Dalton; two daughters, Melonie Thompson of Lancaster, N.H., and Debbie Gilmore of Littleton; four sisters, Mattie Burns and Eleanor Hill, both of Whitefield, Katherine Sheraton of Littleton, and Edwina Patten of Littleton; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; close friends Dick, Steve, Rodney, Sonny and Bert; and several nieces and nephews. A daughter Jodiene Sweeney, three brothers Julius Sweeney, Edward Sweeney and Robert Sweeney and a sister Florence Ricker, predeceased him. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, Jan. 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A memorial service will be held Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at the Lancaster Congregational United Church of Christ. Reverend Virginia Alvarez, pastor, will officiate. , 76, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. She was born May 25, 1932, in Montpelier, the daughter of Edward Brunelle and Dorothy (Dunton) Brunelle. She married George Siekierski in 1951. They lived in Montpelier, New Haven, Conn., and West Springfield, Mass., and had a son, Keith. They divorced in 1962 after a period of separation. For several years she was a reporter for the Barre-Montpelier Times-Argus, writing human interest stories. There she met Lee Dawley, originally of Gowanda, N.Y.; they married in 1963. After their move to S. Ryegate in 1964, she worked at The Caledonian Record in St. Johnsbury and the Orange County Council of Social Agencies. Lee was stricken with multiple sclerosis in the late 1970s, and as his condition worsened Joan spent more time tending to him. From 1985-2004, caring for him was her sole occupation. Always an advocate of higher education, she was late to attend college herself. She studied at Goddard College in Plainfield, from 1976-1980, first focusing on the visual arts before pursuing a B.A. in Philosophy. She went on to a four-year graduate program at the State University of New York at Albany; she received her Masters in Philosophy in 1990. Studies in linguistics also led her to summer programs at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio, and Kossuth Lajos Tudományegyetem in Debrecen, Hungary. Her engagement with ideas was life long, and she continued to read in history, philosophy, and neuroscience until her final hospitalization. She was predeceased by husband Lee Dawley; son Keith Siekierski; brother Philip Brunelle, and sister Kathleen Haggett. She is survived by brother Robert Brunelle (and wife Jackie) of S. Barre; two daughters, Andrea Sharp (and husband Steve) of Essex Junction, and Janice Dawley of Burlington; and son Hugh Dawley of Burlington; as well as several nieces and grandchildren. A memorial ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the S. Ryegate Presbyterian Church on May 25, 2009. , 88, of Harrisburg, Pa., formerly of Vermont and New Hampshire, passed away Monday, Jan. 19, 2009. She was born June 27, 1920, in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada to the late William Victor and Dorothy M. (Cox) Prinn. The widow of C. Ross Richardson, she is survived by two sons, Gregory Neil Richardson of Sarasota, Fla., Jeffrey Lee Richardson of Gregory, Mich.; and a daughter, Pamela Sue Purrington of Etters; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service to honor both Thelma and her husband will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at Parthemore Funeral Home, New Cumberland. Interment will be in Lyndon, Vt. , the widow of Arthur J. Courteau and formerly of Emerson Street in St. Johnsbury, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at Uihlein Mercy Center, Lake Placid, N.Y. She had resided for the past year and a half with her daughter, Kathleen Conlon, in Lake Placid. She was born in St. Johnsbury on Oct. 25, 1915. She was predeceased by her parents Fred and Myrtle (Maxwell) Rattigan, her brother Charles Rattigan, her sister Frances and husband Howard Willard, and her son-in-law Ed Conlon. Eleanor graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1933 and Brightlook School of Nursing in 1936 where she worked 1937-1940. She worked as a registered nurse at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn., from 1956-1979. She and Arthur came back to live in St. Johnsbury in 1984. Eleanor was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, the St. Johnsbury Women's Club, and the Onamo Club. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Roche and husband Kenneth of Old Saybrook, Conn., and Kathleen Conlon of Lake Placid, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Colello and husband Peter of Clayton, N.Y., Brian Roche and wife Bridie of North Bridgton, Maine, Timothy Conlon of Denver, Colo., Peter Roche and wife Ayako of West Hartford, Conn., Mary Lolar and husband Carl of South Portland, Maine; five great-grandchildren, Serena Rose Roche, Charlotte Eleanor Colello, Beatrice Margaret Colello, Vivian Rain Lolar, Ken Ronan Roche; sister-in-law Marion Rattigan of Peoria, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be held in St. Johnsbury Monday, Jan. 26, at 1 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Committal services will be held in the springtime at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. , 59, of 96 Hill St., Danville, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center from lung cancer. She was born in Concord, April 4, 1949, Daughter of Paul and Lorraine Begin. She was a volunteer for RCT, local area food shelves and other notable causes. She was well loved and touched many hearts and minds, and was considered by many as a part of their "adopted" families. She is survived by her sons, Christopher Newman, of St. Johnsbury, and Thomas Newman, of Barnet; her brother Leo Begin, of Bow, N.H.; and Sister Lucy Norway, of Nashua, N.H.; as well as several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A reception will be held at 96 Hill St. Apt. # 6, Danville, on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, from 2 to 6 p.m.

, 78, of Pompano Beach, Fla., and formerly of Lyndonville, Vt., passed away on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. She was born on Dec. 17, 1930, in East Hampton, N.Y., to E. Vivian and Julia Evelyn Gosman Parsons. She attended Amagansett Grade School and graduated from East Hampton High School. She later attended and graduated from Cornell University-NY School of Nursing in 1953 as a registered nurse, but chose to delay her nursing career until after establishing her family. On May 4, 1952, she married Ivan (Page) Topping, and they had five children. They relocated to Lyndonville with their children in 1967. Sally worked at the Convalescent Center in St. Johnsbury, as a registered nurse for about seven years. In 1976, Page and Sally bought a house in Ft. Lauderdale, and spent the winters there, returning to Vermont for the milder months. Sally had been an active member of the Union Baptist Church in Waterford, as well as the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ft. Lauderdale. She enjoyed sewing and knitting and made many articles of clothing for her children and grandchildren. She also in past years enjoyed playing her piano. She was predeceased by her husband Ivan, her parents E. Vivian and Julia Evelyn Parsons, her brothers Winchell and Elbert Parsons, and her sisters-in-law Betty Parsons and Almira Topping Wilford. Survivors include her children Irene Topping of Old Saybrook, Conn., Joyce and Michael Ferraro of Pompano Beach, Fla., Lawrence and Deborah Topping of Charlottsville, Va., Sandra and Durwood Legacy of East Burke, Lynda and Jonathan Blott of Soulsbyville, Calif.; her grandchildren Meghan, Joshua, David Christoper, Matthew, Stephen, Christine, Jennifer, Alan, Porscha, Lucia, Jaime, Bryan and Candice; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces Julie Cole, Mary Cooper, and Susan Knobel.
