, 100, formerly of The Gary Home in Montpelier, died Monday, June 8, 2009 at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin. She was born in Peacham on May 8, 1909, to Frank G. and Nellie (Blair) Shaw. She attended Peacham Elementary school and Peacham Academy. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont in 1931 and earned her Master's degree from Cornell University. Agnes taught school in Cabot, Thetford Academy and St. Johnsbury Academy from 1931 to 1971. She was a member of the Peacham Congregational Church, the Vermont Retired Teacher's Association, Washington County Retired Teachers, AARP, Women of Bethany, and Delta Kappa Gamma. She is survived by her sister, Katherine, of Montpelier and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her sister, Marrion Shaw and her brother, Gilbert Shaw. A graveside service will be held at the Peacham Cemetery at a later date. Marion Lena (Webb) Spriggs

, 85, of Merrimack, N.H., died on Sunday, June 7, 2009 at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua. Marion was born on July 31, 1923 in St. Johnsbury, a daughter of the late Walter and Effie (Streeter) Webb. She had been a resident of Merrimack for the past 12 years and previously lived in Nashua and Lowell, Mass. Marion was the widow of James H. Spriggs, Jr. She married James, a retired Army Captain and Tech Writer for Raytheon on June 5, 1943 and had shared 57 years of marriage. Marion was devoted to her husband and family. She spent her early life traveling with Jim and Paula, stationed in Texas, Kentucky and Maryland. Marion then followed her husband overseas in Occupied Japan and Germany both for three years. She always said she saw the world on the Army's dime. At one time, she was a member of the Lowell District Women's Republican Club in Lowell, and Rainbow Mother's Club. Marion was also a Brownie leader, avid reader, excellent cook, and enjoyed bowling. She was a member of the Pawtucket Congregational Church in Lowell and was involved with the Women's Association and Couples Club of the church. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Glenn, Bernard, Clifford, Leslie, and Carl Streeter; her sister, Nila Barry; her son-in-law, John Goodrow; a nephew, David Silcox Spriggs; a brother-in-law, David Spriggs; and a granddaughter, Cherrie Anne Goodrow. Survivors include two daughters, Paula Louise (Spriggs) Goodrow and Melody Lynn Spriggs both of Merrimack; three grandchildren and spouses, Rae Anne J. Goodrow Burton and her husband Robert Burton Jr., Carter Webb Goodrow and his wife Helene Goodrow, Amy Beth Elwell all of Merrimack; four great-grandchildren, John Mason Elwell, Kelsea Sylvia Goodrow, Corinne Nancy Goodrow, and Megan Lynn Elwell all of Merrimack; a brother, Prescott Streeter of Merrimack; five sisters-in-law, Alice (Silcox) Spriggs of Chelmsford, Mass., Helene Streeter of Kalamazoo, Mich., Marian Streeter and Carol Streeter both of Lunenburg, and Elizabeth Streeter of Wilton, N.H.; a brother-in-law, Walter Berry of E. Concord; and several nieces and nephews, including Kenneth B. Spriggs of Sugarloaf, Pa. , 47, of Barre, and formerly of St. Johnsbury, died Monday morning June 8, 2009, in Burlington, following an accident with his motorcycle in Bolton. He was born June 3, 1962, in St. Johnsbury, the son of Robert and Lucille (Lanphere) Towle. In 1980 he graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy. In 1982 he enlisted in the US Navy where he served 26 years earning many medals, ribbons, and citations. At his retirement, Mark was a Senior Chief Petty Officer, and was the Senior enlisted leader at the Naval Ambulatory Care Center in Sub-base, New London, Conn. While in the US Navy, Mark earned a Bachelors degree in Health Care Management from TRURO University. Recently Mark worked for EDS in Williston where he was an investigator for the Healthcare Industry. He enjoyed fishing, skiing, softball, spending time with his family, and coaching his daughter's softball team while in North Carolina. Survivors include his two sons, Nicholas Towle of Jacksonville, N.C., and Landon Towle of New Bern, N.C.; his daughter, Macy Towle of Barre; his companion, Tamara Devarney of Barre; his parents, Robert and Lucille Towle of Waterford; his brother, Ricky Towle of Waterford; his best friend, Gary Turner of St. Johnsbury; Aunts, Uncles, cousins, and many good friends. Funeral services with Military Honors will be held Friday June 12, at 11 a.m., at the Sayles Funeral Home with the Rev. Ann Hockridge officiating. , age 82, of Milford, Conn., passed away on Tuesday, June 8, 2009, in Yale New Haven Hospital. She was born on Feb. 6, 1927, in Lunenburg to the late Cecil and Louise Morin Smith. Before retiring, she was employed as a Registered Nurse for Dr. James Keegan. An active member of the community, she was the founder and executive director of Pierce - Newman Memorial Fund, past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, a volunteer for the CT Audubon Society, Beth El Shelter and the American Red Cross Blood Services, where she received an exceptional service award for 50 years of dedicated service. In her spare time, she was a gifted knitter and crocheter. Mrs. Pierce is survived by her loving daughters, Heather Pierce Hackley of Branford and Gail P. Fichtner of Milford; sister Bernice Pierce of Concord; brother Herbert Smith of Manchester; and grandchildren Robert, Elizabeth, Daniel and Katie. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her husband Homer J. Pierce and brother Morin Smith. Calling hours are Wednesday, June 10, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Smith & Sefcik Funeral Home, 135 Broad St., Milford, Conn. , Sr., 81, of Main Street, died June 10, 2009, unexpectedly at his home in Newbury. He was born in Bath, N.H., July 3, 1927, a son of George Henry and Louella (Heath) Chamberlin. He was a graduate of Newbury High School in 1945. Upon graduation, he served in the US Army 6th Armored Infantry Battalion until his discharge on July 4, 1947. Irving married Marion Tyler on Jan. 30, 1949. He worked for several years for Russell Estes of Estes and Gallup in Lyme, N.H., before becoming a self-employed finish carpenter. He also worked for Maurice Slight at Grafton Fuel in Haverhill, N.H. He was a member and past deacon of the First Congregational Church of Newbury and had served as a water commissioner for 15 years. He was predeceased by a daughter Mary Lou Chamberlin and by his siblings George H. Chamberlin, Hazel Jeroma, Chapman H. Chamberlin, Minerva Wheeler, Laura Piper, and Edith Anderson. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marion Chamberlin of Newbury; two daughters, Margaret Fitzgerald and husband Tom of East Longmeadow, Mass., and Marcia Snowdon and husband Dale of Pawling, N.Y.; two sons, Irving W. , 80, of Gilman, died Friday morning June 12, 2009, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster, N.H. Mr. Knudson was born in Colebrook, N.H., on Jan. 14, 1929, the son of Ingver and Grace (Page) Knudson. Charlie was raised in Colebrook until eight years of age. He then resided in many North Country towns until he married Clarice J. McKeage and they settled in Dalton for 15 years. They then moved to Gilman where he opened the first Charlie's Service Station for a few years and later moving to a second location that he operated for 20 years. He also worked for Hitchners in Littleton, N.H., before retiring. He was a 50-year member and former chief of the Lunenburg Fire Department, Company B. Other memberships include the Dalton Congregational Church, the Gilman Methodist Church, St. Johnsbury Moose and the Gilman Senior Citizens. Family members include three sons, Charles G. Knudson and his partner Linda Way of Lunenburg, Rodney Knudson and his partner Fran Owen of East Concord, and Paul S. Gilman and his wife Shelia of Whitefield, N.H.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. His wife Clarice, his sons Randy L. Knudson, Steven B. Knudson and Dean Gilman, and a sister Gloria Gilman predeceased him. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday afternoon and evening June 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. , 81, of Colby Road, Whitefield, N.H., died Thursday June 11, 2009, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster, N.H. Mr. Rexford was born in Whitefield on June 23, 1927, the son of Carroll I. And Myrtle (Danforth) Rexford. Wendell was a lifetime resident of Whitefield raised on the family farm there. His lifetime of work was a variety of farming, wood and pulp, and construction. At one time he was the largest pulp supplier for Franconia Paper in Lincoln. In 1959 he started Wendell Rexford & Sons construction and also developed the Meadow Mist Trailer Park in the 70s. Wendell had many interests and they included bowling, golfing, hunting, fishing, traveling and snowmobiling. He also enjoyed spending the winter months at his second home in Spring Hill, Fla. He was a longtime member of the Advent Christian Church in Whitefield. Wendell also served two terms as Selectman for the town of Whitefield. Family members include his wife of 62 years, Marilyn J. (Smith) Rexford of Whitefield; two sons, Carroll W. "Butch" Rexford and his wife Marion of Whitefield, Larry D. Rexford and his wife Kathy of Whitefield; a daughter Kimberley R. DesRuisseaux and her husband Marc of Auburn, N.H.; six grandchildren, Sharon Duffy, Kelli Bradbury, Bryan Rexford, Keith Rexford, Alexandra DesRuisseaux, Danielle DesRuisseaux; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Everett Rexford of Lancaster, Rodney Rexford of Dalton; a sister Gail Cormier of Whitefield; and many nieces and nephews. , 85, of Whitefield, N.H., beloved wife of Frank O'Leary, passed away June 10, 2009, at the Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscawen, N.H., after a battle with Alzheimer's. Daughter of the late Antonio and Olivia (Silva) Santos, Dorothy grew up in Peabody, Mass., where she graduated from Peabody High School in 1941. She and Frank moved to Twin Mountain, N.H. in 1978 when the purchased and ran the Carroll Motel before moving to Whitefield. Over the years she worked at the Mt. Washington Hotel, Bretton Woods Ski Area and the Mt. Washington Cog Railway. Knitting was her passion and she enjoyed knitting for her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and Frank would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on June 15, 2009. Surviving her, in addition to her husband, are her daughter Patricia and her husband Frank Chmielecki of Gilmanton, N.H.; a brother, Tony Santos of Peabody, Mass.; five grandchildren, Jamie Plummer of Twin Mountain, N.H., Kelly Gleason of Milan, N.H., Patrick Gauld of Jefferson, N.H., Jennifer O'Leary and Tracy O'Leary of Nashua, N.H.; three great-grandchildren, Brandon and Jacob Gleason and Ethan Gauld; daughter-in-law Nancy O'Leary of Nashua, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Bob O'Leary; her sister Evelyn Lobao; and brother Richie Santos. He was born in Nashua, N.H., on July 6, 1946, the son of John H. and Cecile (Brousseau) Adams, Sr. John graduated from Woodsville High School, Class of 1964. He served with U. S. Army during the Vietnam War from November 1965 to August 1967. John married Donna Lynn Dunbar on Oct. 19, 1968. For the past 10 years he worked in shipping and receiving and was also a truck driver for North East Precision in St. Johnsbury. He had previously worked for Maple Grove Farms as a warehouse manager in the shipping and receiving department. John was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and camping. He also enjoyed music, bluegrass festivals, sports, boating, the ocean, and making trips to Maine and Florida. He was predeceased by his parents, Cecile (Brousseau) Adams on Sept. 20, 1982 and John H. Adams, Sr. on Dec. 3, 1994. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Donna L. (Dunbar) Adams of Barnet; two sons, John H. Adams, III of Barnet, and James D. Adams of Plainfield, N.H.; two aunts and cousins. There will be no calling hours. , 77, of Burke, died Friday June 12, 2009, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. He was born July 12, 1931, in Wheelock, the son of Guy and Viola (Sherburne) Simpson. On Dec. 25, 1952, he married Thelma Thompson. Bob served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked for more than 30 years at VT Tap & Die Co. and Northeast Tool Co. of Lyndonville as a machinist. He was a lifetime member of the Vermont Trappers Association, and the VFW Post 10038 of Lyndonville. He was also a member of the NRA. Trapping, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, riding his 4-wheeler, and camping at the family camp in Wheelock brought him great pleasure. He enjoyed life and all the activities he shared with his family. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Bernard; and on Jan. 18, 2009, he suffered the loss of his beloved wife Thelma. Survivors include his son, Larry Simpson and wife Bunny of Lyndon; two grandchildren, Kevin Simpson and wife Kim, and Michelle Nichols and husband Mike; three step-grandchildren, Kathy Humphrey, Randall Humphrey and wife Valerie, and CeCe Humphrey; two great grandchildren, Jason Simpson, and Bailey Marie Nichols; two brothers, Donald Simpson and wife Sue of Sutton, and Steve Simpson and wife Brenda of Kirby; a sister, Nancy Vincent and husband Gordon of Milton; his in-laws, Madelene Robinson, Bud and Arlene Thompson, Lloyd Thompson, Richard and Huguette Thompson, Gerald Thompson, Donald and Pearline Thompson, and Louise Thompson; and many nieces and nephews. of Barre, passed away at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital on Friday, June 12 at the age of 69. She was born on Jan. 24, 1940, in St. Albans, Vt., the daughter of Lyle and Eva (King) Rowland. On Oct. 6, 1956 she married Kenneth Bacon. Arlene loved to go fishing and camping and was an avid bird watcher and gardener. When not outside she loved to do her knitting, sewing and crocheting. She also enjoyed dancing to country music and Fluffy her favorite cat, who passed away just two days after she went into the hospital. She is survived by her seven children: Douglas Bacon and wife Candy of Barton, Susan Bacon and friend Ron Boutin of Glover, Richard Bacon and wife Becky of Ashby, Mass., Kim Bacon of Winchendon, Mass., Cynthia Bacon of Barre City, Kenneth Bacon and wife Kim of Barton, and Mary Bacon Kittredge and husband Mike of Plainfield, her 14 grandchildren: Jennifer, Joshua, and Jesse Bacon, Lucian Mason, Abby and Christopher Bacon, Michael and Amy Hance, Aaron Bacon, Ken, Amanda and Kevin Bacon, Carrie and Sonya Bacon, 13 great grandchildren, a brother: Cecil Rowland of Williamstown, Mass., sister: Elaine Luchassi and husband Arthur of Williamstown, Mass., brother-in-law: Robert Tucker of Lunenburg, Mass. , 88, formerly of West Burke, died Thursday, June 11, 2009, at St. Johnsbury Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was born Dec. 22, 1920, in East Berkshire, Vt., the son of Clifford and Isabelle (Larabee) Bingham. A 1942 graduate of Brighton High School in Island Pond, Marshall later enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in the European Theater as a Weather Observer, coding and decoding all weather data during WWII. In 1946, when he returned from the Army, he worked several years at the Corner Garage in St. Johnsbury as a mechanic. He then became a co-owner of the West Burke Garage where he was a mechanic serving the community of West Burke and beyond for 25 years. Marshall was on the West Burke School Board for many years. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 10038 of Lyndonville. An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of the Orleans Country Club, and while in Myrtle Beach, S.C., (where he wintered following his retirement) he achieved a hole-in-one. Gardening, spending time at the family camp on Newark Pond, visiting with friends and family, and traveling brought him much pleasure. He was predeceased by his wife, whom he married in 1947, Arlene (Carr) Bingham in 1975. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Ralph and Howard Bingham; two sisters, Bernice Gosen, and Altha Brown; and a son in-law, Raymond Bonneau. Survivors include his son, Peter Bingham of Lyndonville, (P.O. , 61, of Lyndonville, died Friday, June 12, 2009, at St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center, with his wife Janet at his side. He was born Sept. 16, 1947, in St. Johnsbury, the son of Elbert and Leonora (Brown) Gilman. A graduate of St. Johnsbury Trade School, Ron later entered the U.S. Air Force. He served for several years and was a sergeant when he was honorably discharged in 1973. He worked as a truck driver for St. Johnsbury Trucking Co. for nearly 20 years. He then worked at Kennametal, formerly VT Tap & Die Co., for 14 years. Music was a very important part of Ron's life. He played guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and sang for many years at dances and functions with several area bands including, Best of Friends Band, Country Americans, Gone Country, North Bound, and the Krazy Kountry Band. He was predeceased by his parents. Graveside funeral services will be held Friday, June 19 at 3 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in St. Johnsbury. There will be no calling hours. , of Lyndon Center, died at her home Thursday evening June 11, 2009, at the age of 62. She was born Jan. 20, 1947, in St. Johnsbury, the daughter of Chester and Margaret (Lamontagne) Buck. A graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy's class of 1964, Dayne Rae later graduated from Lyndon State College with a Bachelors degree in human services. A child care provider for 26 years she operated Danni's Diaper Den in Lyndon Center. She was also a foster care provider who enjoyed helping and being around people. Sewing, knitting, quilting, attending yard sales, and visiting the ocean brought her much pleasure. Survivors include her best friend and companion of 26 years, Charles Roderick of Lyndon Center; a son, Willis Hall Jr. and fiancée Tracy Warner of East Ryegate; four daughters, Tracy Villeneuve and husband Richard of Waterford, Geste Doyon and fiancée Steven Lussier of Newark; Lori Hall of Lyndonville, and Meagan O'Hanlon and husband Donal of Longmeadow, Mass.; eight grandchildren, Kryssi, Gage, Gina, Justin, Kaitlyn, Alyssa, Tyler, and Taylor; four great grandchildren, Charley, Grace, Trayvionne, and Keyshawn; three brothers, James Buck and wife Linda Ward of Sutton, Thomas Buck and wife Virginia of Lyndonville, and David Buck and wife Louise of St. Johnsbury; a sister, Debra Chase and husband Mark of Littleton, N.H.; a brother in-law, Stanley Vilakis of Springfield, Mass.; nieces; nephews; her extended family, Jelena and Greg Gervais and children, Brandon, Alexis, and Brady of Lyndonville; and her loving dog Buddy and cat Milo. She was predeceased by her parents; a grandson, Joey Lamphear; a brother, Richard Buck; a sister, Beatrice Vilakis; and two sisters in-law, Valerie Buck, and Elaine Petty. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, June 20, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Waterford Springs Club House located on Birchtree Lane in Waterford.
