Dr. Roy M. Coleman

, 78, of McLean, Virginia, psychoanalyst, 40-plus-year summer resident of Glover, member and graduate of the Washington Psychoanalytic Institute, and longtime member of the Washington Psychiatric Society Council, died at the Washington Home Hospice Center on November 4, 2008, of complications from renal failure. Glover and environs were dear to Dr. Coleman's heart, and in summer months he could be seen daily at Currier's picking up his mail and his newspaper. His friends and family will remember him for his unfailing - although sometimes mischievous - hospitality, his incisive wit, engaging smile, and his love of fine food and wine. He was willing to go well out of his way to get a hold of his favorite foods and wines; even as his health failed, he refused to give up his frequent trips to his favorite bakery in Canada for his order of five dozen croissants. Overnight guests were always treated to some of those croissants from across the border, served with local jams. During his last summers in Glover, one of his favorite topics was the many shades of green that made up his view of the hills. Dr. Coleman maintained a private practice in psychoanalysis for nearly three decades, retiring in 2004. In addition, he spent several years in the late 1980s and early é90's working with the Central Intelligence Agency, where he prepared psychoanalytic profiles of hostile leaders, including Saddam Hussein. He also served the District of Columbia as a forensic psychiatrist at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, where his reports were highly regarded. As a member of the American Psychiatric Association's assembly, he championed the preservation of psychotherapy as part of comprehensive psychiatric treatment. He served on the Washington Psychiatric Associationés Board of Directors for more than 25 years and as chairman of the Washington Psychiatric Societyés Ethics Committee. In that role his orientation was educational rather than punitive, and he was seen as an excellent teacher. He was a working member of the Center for Advanced Psychoanalytic Studies (CAPS). Dr. Coleman was a major leader within the Washington Psychiatric Society, first as Ethics Committee chairman, then in the assembly where he became Area III representative. He was on its board of directors for almost 30 years. He was lauded for his ability to draft positions that became enduring policy. Dr. Coleman was a longtime member of The Cosmos Club and the National Press Club. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and his medical degree from the University of Rochester Medical School. He completed his psychiatric residency at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts, where he then served as an administrator until l967. At that time he took a faculty position in the Department of Psychiatry at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he remained until the mid-1970s, then continued as a member of the clinical faculty. He was an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Medical School. His 1956 marriage to Alice Modzelewski ended in divorce in 1990. Dr. Coleman is survived by his longtime partner, Marian Burros, of Bethesda, Maryland, and Glover; by two sons, David Coleman of Mountain View, California, and Robert Coleman of Portland, Oregon; and by four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held March 21 at The Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C.
