Arlene Mae Young

, 78, died peacefully at her home, Springdale Farm in West Glover, on Thursday, June 5, 2008. Arlene was born at home in Westmore on May 17, 1930, the second child of Clifton and Greta Drohen Perkins. She grew up on the family farm. Arlene attended the public schools of Westmore and then attended Orleans High School. She graduated as class valedictorian in 1948. She next attended Lyndon Teachers College, graduating in 1950. Arlene married Loudon George Young on August 21, 1950. During their almost 54-year long marriage, they lived and worked on their dairy farms in West Glover, first at Edgewood Place and later at Springdale Farm. As a girl, Arlene experienced life on a dairy farm. As a woman, she recreated what she knew and loved. Farming was in her blood. She loved everything about life on the farm - the animals, the work, and the open spaces. Well, she probably didn't love the uncertainty, but she realized that it was part of the package. Arlene was an avid gardener. For years and years, she managed a large plot that yielded bountiful summer meals. She also canned, froze, and pickled the surplus. In addition to her vegetable garden, she made sure flowers always decorated the front yard. Arlene was a great cook and a generous hostess. Friends, neighbors, and relatives often made sure that their visits coincided with suppertime. Although she was an accomplished cook, she always enjoyed dining out with family members, even if it was just McDonald's. Arlene loved to take long Sunday afternoon drives in the countryside. Arlene liked to chat, but she loved to chat with her husband, Loudon, who provided her with stories about the world beyond the farm. Arlene was a voracious reader, especially murder mysteries, a taste she shared in common with several of her children. Arlene's life was centered on her family. She loved her husband and children, but she loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren! Arlene is survived by her children: John Young and his life partner, Janet Russell, of Charleston, South Carolina, Edward Young of West Glover, Georgia Young of Glover, Dean Young of West Glover, Darlene Young and her husband, Ned Andrews, of Glover, and Arthur Young and his wife, Tara, of West Glover; by her grandchildren: Nathan Todd and his wife, Sarah, of Canton, New York, Jennie Young of Charleston, South Carolina, Benjamin Todd and his wife, Kelly, of Barton, Katie Young of Charleston, South Carolina, Christopher Todd of Wichita, Kansas, Meg Andrews of Glover, and Zoë and Maia Young of West Glover; and by her great-grandchildren: Abigail and Lincoln Todd of Canton and Gabrial, Brooklyn, and Azeda Peace Todd of Barton; by her siblings: Pauline Simons and her husband, Bob, of Claremont, New Hampshire, Roger Perkins and his wife, Barbara, of Storrs-Mansfield, Connecticut, Cliff Perkins and his wife, Kathleen, of Williston, Avis Elliott and her husband, Earl, of Danville, Betty Simons and her husband, Francis, of Middlebury, and Larry Perkins and his wife, Judy, of Westmore; and by her sisters-in-law Barbara Perkins of Orleans and Doreen Cleveland of Orleans; and by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Loudon; by her brothers Alvah and Raymond Perkins; and by her son Richard. Calling hours will be held Friday, June 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Barton. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 14, at 3 p.m. at the West Glover Congregational Church with the Reverend Evelyn Coupe officiating. Private burial will be at a later date. Rose Ellen Christina LaClair
....show
, 70, of Barton died Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Her son and a daughter were by her side when she finally decided that it was now time to let go. Over recent years, Mrs. LaClair endured numerous physical health struggles with quiet dignity, rarely ever complaining about how much her health issues were altering the quality of her life. She accepted her delicate health with great grace and continued to live a quiet life with her family with admirable spiritual outlook. She was born in Rathavisteen, County Mayo, Ireland, on December 22, 1937. She grew up in a large Irish Catholic family, which included 12 siblings and her parents, Patrick and Bridget (Hefferon) McCann. When she was still a teenager, she met an American serviceman named Gordon LaClair, who had been stationed at a military base in England. They married in Newbury, England, after a quick courtship. They would have celebrated 51 years together on November 24. She relocated to the United States with her husband and began a brand-new life, leaving behind her large Irish family and the only home she had ever known. It was a difficult adjustment in the beginning. She would occasionally talk about how lonely she felt during those initial years in the United States because of how much she missed her family back home. A new life with a new husband in a new country. But she slowly grew to love and appreciate her family through marriage and began to feel more comfortable. However, she always retained her Irish citizenship. As she would say, "I love America, but my soul is Irish." She and her husband built their life together primarily in Orleans County. They lived most of those years in Orleans and Barton. Together they raised three children and became the grandparents of seven. In her employment life, she was a dedicated and tireless worker. She liked to keep busy, and when poor health forced her into early retirement, it was another life adjustment that took a bit of time to accept. She spent over 20 years employed at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton, most of those years working as a certified nursing assistant. Even though she held several jobs before then, it was at Maple Lane where she felt as though the residents and many of her co-workers were like family. She was a typical Irish woman - strong-willed! She was not shy about expressing her opinions and possessed a determined spirit that often amazed her family and friends. Her deep spiritual faith kept her strong, despite the numerous physical health issues that beset her since the early nineties. She remained a devoted wife for a husband whom she left her life in Ireland to be with, and as a mother, she was protective and encouraging. She fought hard to stay in this world a little bit longer, rallying several times during this past week while in the hospital. She was a firy Irish woman right up until her final breath - a trait that was the essence of her spirit while on Earth. She was predeceased by her parents, Patrick and Bridget McCann; and by her sisters: Sally Winters, Martina Breen, and Muriel Mannerring. She is survived by her husband and best friend, Gordon LaClair, of Barton; by her son PatrickLaClair and his wife, Diana, of Apache Junction, Arizona; by her daughters Jacqueline Butler and her husband, Steven, of Bradford and Christina LaClair of Shelburne; seven grandchildren: Tabitha Humphreys, April Clark, Matthew and Katherine LaClair, and Tameara, Tianna and Steven Butler. She was an animal lover who doted on the family pets. She leaves behind her much-loved Schnauzer Kissy, who was a devoted companion to both her and her husband. For those who would like to make contributions in Mrs. LaClair's memory, the family requests that donations be made to the local Humane Society. Visiting hours will be held at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Barton at noon on Saturday, June 14, followed by a memorial service at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Barton at 2 p.m.
