Despite a series of strokes that eliminated her ability to continue her artistic activities, she remained joyously upbeat providing an inspirational role model to all she knew. Although a woman of few words, Lorraine taught through example the most important lessons of life. Through her infectious smile, she reminded us to slow down and appreciate the people and things around us, not to take life's challenges too seriously, and to always say "Thank you." passed away Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008, at his Easton, N.H., home. "Uncle Mickey," as he was affectionately known around the area, was an icon in the local ski world. As an advocate for the skiing community, he and his wife, Marge, consistently worked hard to make skiing assessable to all children in the area. They started up a program in the 1960s to make available to any child the right equipment and clothing. This entailed quite a bit of work and commitment on their part. They provided good skis, bindings, poles, mittens, hats, etc., to any child who needed them at no cost to child and family. This program went on for many years. Uncle Mickey also was very interested in the skiing careers of local kids who had gone on to major achievements in the sport. He was always interested in young people and tried to help them whenever he could. Mickey was born July 20, 1924, to Raymond and Veona (Morancy) Libby in Berlin, N.H. He attended the Berlin schools. In June of 1943 Mickey enlisted in the service to serve his country in World War II. He was an army Pioneer 729, working as a demolition specialist in the 346th Infantry Regiment, 87th Division, 3rd Army. He fought in the European theater at Rhineland and at Ardennes in the Battle of the Bulge. He received many decorations including the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star and the Victory Medal. After the war Mickey joined the Cannon Mountain Ski Patrol in 1950. He became Assistant Patrol Director in 1968, and then went on to become the director in 1972. He worked at Cannon Mt. for 40 years and retired in 1989 as the Ski Patrol Director. Mickey is survived by one son, Fred Libby and wife Patti of Sante Fe, N.M.; two granddaughters, Dru and Nina Libby; one brother, Darald Libby and wife Juliet of Manchester, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Marjorie Herbert Libby and one daughter, Sally A. Libby. Visiting hours will be Thursday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Ross Funeral Home, Littleton Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church in Littleton at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 31, with burial to follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Franconia. A reception will be held at the Franconia Inn in Franconia immediately after interment.
