In January 1949 he was with the Berlin Airlift. In June 1950 he served in Korea for 31 months for 19 missions with the 729th Squad. He says this part of his career was the most difficult time of his life. In 1954 he married Mavis Harry in Reno, Nev., and made their home in Vallejo and Napa, Calif. (near Hamilton Field). This union lasted for 50 wonderful years. Mavis especially enjoyed Al's European assignment when she got to travel to 15 different countries in Europe and North Africa with Stephen, Al's son from his previous marriage to Evelyn Michaed, of Walden, in 1947, which ended in divorce. Mavis and Al were fortunate to own land in Napa where they built their dream home on a hill overlooking a corner of San Francisco Bay. They produced grapes that made Chardonnay wine that was selected as a number one wine at a blind testing of Chardonnay in Switzerland. Mavis and Al always maintained an "open door" policy at their "Fournier Ranch" where many of their relatives spent much time. Once you were invited into their home, you were welcome to stay for dinner - and overnight, too, if you wished. Al said to be sure to say in his obituary, "I have had a wonderful life and no regrets. I have been a very lucky man in having a wonderful son and wife, loving grandchildren and two great careers. What more can a man want? I have had it all!"
