, 92, died January 28, 2008, at Union House in Glover, where she had been a resident for the past five months. Mrs. Squires was born November 28, 1915, in Barre, a daughter of Earl and Eleanor (Boyce) Eastman. She married Basil Squires on April 25, 1938. To this union five children were born. She and her husband divorced, and she was left alone to raise the five children. A big garden was a must. She was able to make a meal out of almost anything. Great pickles, rolls, and her famous apple pie will always be remembered by the family. She lived in West Glover for over 50 years, moving to Barton to Mountainview Apartments in 1999. She was very happy to be able to live by herself with the help of her very loving son David, who would not let her want for anything. She belonged to the West Glover Church and the Willing Workers and Christmas clubs. She was a cook in area schools and restaurants and at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton. She cleaned camps, took in mending, and did laundry and any other work to support her family. She was known for her sharp tongue, as people might say, telling it the way it was whether people wanted to hear it or not. Her family will always remember and love her for that. She is survived by her sons Jerry Squires of Florida and David Squires and his wife, Susan, of Glover; by her daughter Lucille Squires of Newport; by daughter in-law Becky Squires; by 14 grandchildren; and by several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; by two children, Louise Glodgett in 2003 and Roger Squires in 1997; by two sisters, Stella Stevens and Lucille Bell; and by an infant brother. Funeral services were held February 2 at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Barton with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Spring interment will be held at Westlook Cemetery in Glover. Merl Clemont Rowell

, 88, of Calais died peacefully at his residence on Sunday, February 3, 2008. Mr. Rowell was born January 17, 1920, in Hardwick, a son of the late Hugh and Mabel (Richards) Rowell. He attended Woodbury public schools. On April 29, 1949, he married Lillie May Jacobs in Morrisville. They moved to North Calais, where he had made his home for more than 57 years. In his earlier years he was employed by the town of Woodbury and the Moscow Saw Mill in East Calais. For more than 40 years he worked for Charles Scribner on his dairy farm in Calais. He retired in 1982. He will be remembered as a wonderful father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed Sunday afternoon gatherings and long walks and picking apples, singing, playing ball, hunting, fishing, and watching television. Survivors include five sons: Cecil Dailey and his wife, Martha, of Orleans, Donald Rowell and his wife, Cindy, of Barre Town, Edward Rowell and his wife, Nancy, of Calais, Richard Rowell and his wife, Nancy, of East Montpelier, and Douglas Rowell of Calais; four daughters: Shirley Collier and her husband, Thomas, of Greensboro, Millie Brumback and her husband, Terrill, of Calais, Betty Chase of Barre, and Elizabeth Paton and her husband, Richard, of Woodbury; two sisters, Christine Wheeler and Crystal Butterworth of Orange, Massachusetts; 31 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; three great-great-granddaughters; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Lillie, on April 10, 1990; by two grandsons, Kevin Rowell and Donald "Billy" Bliss III; by son-in-law Clifford Chase; by four brothers: Clifton, Earle, Donald, and Maynard Rowell; and by three sisters: Velma Rowell, Iola Fair, and Clover Zwicker. To honor his request, there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held in Fairview Cemetery in East Calais in the spring. Robert Homer Galipeau

, 85, of Westfield died peacefully at North Country Hospital in Newport on January 31, 2008, after a long struggle with cancer. Mr. Galipeau was born May 21, 1922, a son of the late J. Homer and Yvonne (Heroux) Galipeau. On December 26, 1946, he married FloretteLaporte, who survives him. He was decorated with the Purple Heart Medal for valor at Utah Beach, north of Omaha Beach, during World War II in France. He was a math teacher at Vergennes, North Troy, and Newport high schools. He started a general merchandise store in the unoccupied Wursthorn building in Troy and remained there for 22 years. He was on the school board for many years. He held memberships with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post 28 in North Troy. He is survived by his wife, Florette, of Westfield; by his sister Rita Driscoll and her husband, John, of Phoenix, Arizonia; by his brother Reynold and his wife, Geraldine, of Pittsfield, Massachusetts; and by many nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Evelyn Pekala and Joyce Lamothe. At his request, there will be no service or calling hours. A private gathering will be held for the family.
Edwin Francis Gage

, 82, died peacefully on January 27, 2008, in Newport following a lengthy illness. Mr. Gage was born February 2, 1925, in New Haven, a son of Fred and Hannah (O'Sullivan) Gage. In 1994, he was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Patricia Hill Gage. In 1996 he married Lillian Kelley of Derby Line, who survives him. He grew up in Fair Haven and Vergennes, graduating from Beeman's Academy. As a young man he worked with his father in a lime kiln, and he related many fond memories of his childhood to others. He served in the U.S. Navy and participated in the invasion of Normandy aboard the LST 378. In 1954 he and his wife, Pat, moved to Orleans where they raised their family. He retired after many years as a working trustee for the village of Orleans and ran a barber shop. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and could fix about anything. He was an avid golfer and Red Sox fan, and he loved to travel, square dance, and listen to piano music. He enjoyed his winters in Texas. He dreamed of golfing in Scotland, but declining health prevented this from being realized. His grandchildren were a special joy to him; he treasured attending their sporting and school events. He will be especially missed for his quick wit and entertaining stories. He is surived by his daughters: Dareth Gage of Orleans, Gale Mankoff and her husband, Jeff, of Cibolo, Texas, and Julie Perron and her husband, Brian, of Glover; by his son Glenn Gage of Derby Line; by grandchildren: Justin and Ryan Mankoff of Texas and Gillian and Hillary Perron of Glover; by great-grandchildren: Aiden, Mia, Makenna, and Emma Mankoff of Texas; by sister Madeline Pulver and her husband, Raymond, of Greenwich, Rhode Island; and by many nieces, nephews, stepchildren, and stepgrandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Mary Bryan of Florida; by his brother Robert Gage of New Haven at age five; and by his brother Dr. Terrance Gage of Orleans. Funeral services were held February 1 at St. Edward's Church in Derby Line, officiated by Father Dan Rupp. Spring interment will be held at Pleasantview Cemetery in Orleans. , 96, of Lewiston, Maine, died peacefully on Sunday, January 27, 2008. Mrs. Bean was born September 16, 1911, in Plainville, Connecticut, a daughter of Helen (Styring) and Henry St. John Tyler. She graduated from Plainville High School in 1929 and from Connecticut State College in 1933 with a degree in dietetics. She was employed as head dietitian at Yale University and at Woodrow Wilson High School in Middletown, Connecticut, until her marriage on September 11, 1937, to Arthur Insley Bean of Springfield. She made her home in Springfield for 66 years. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Springfield, serving as church clerk for many years. She was active in University Extension Homemakers and the Altrurian, Garden, Quilters and Needlecraft clubs. She served as a Girl Scouts leader on both the local and state levels and volunteered in the community. She had a deep intellectual and spiritual life and loved traveling, genealogy, reading, and doing needlework. She was dedicated to her family. As a lifelong learner, she attended Elderhostels every year for 25 years. In 2002 she moved to Auburn, Maine, and became part of Schooner Estates retirement community and a member of High Street Congregational Church. Survivors include her sister Olive Garrigus of Urbana, Illinois; her sons Tyler Bean and his wife, Marie, of Orleans and Donald Bean and his wife, Karen, of Bethel, Maine; her daughters Mary Bloom and her husband, Stephen, of Falmouth, Maine, and Emily Tocci and her husband, Gregory, of Orleans; eight grandchildren: Jennifer Bartlau, Gregory Bean, Sarah Zima, Peter Bloom, Nathan Bean, Matthew Bean, Helen Tocci, and AnnaMariaTocci and their spouses; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur, in April 1985; and by her three brothers. A memorial service honoring her life will be held Saturday, February 9, at noon at High Street Congregational Church. , 58, of Sutton died at the Vermont Respite House in Williston on February 2, 2008, following a brief illness. Her children were at her side, holding her hands, when her spirit was set free. Ms. Starr was born in Beverly, Massachusetts, on April 2, 1949, to John and Marguerite Remington. She was a beloved daughter, sister, significant other, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She was always kind, compassionate, and nonjudgmental. She was a fierce protector, good listener, keeper of secrets, world traveler, hard worker, nurse, sheep farmer, thrifty spender, and strong independent spirit. Some of her favorite things were the early mornings, her afternoon cup of tea, family, kayaking, riding her motorcycle, playing tennis, fly fishing, the Rolling Stones, her book club, Center Pond, and Majahual, Mexico. Above all her biggest love was for the water and swimming. One of her favorite memories was from last year when, with the help of her son-in-law, she delivered her youngest grandson into this world, at home when the midwife didn't arrive on time. Of all the places she may be, her family members think it's most likely sitting "en la Playa" in Mexico, basking in the sun, and sipping a margarita with her mother. She is survived by her father, John Remington, of Playa del Carmen, Mexico; by her friend and partner of nearly 20 years, Steve Hall, of Sutton; by her daughter Justina Starr and son-in-law Kay Kasanga of Burlington and their three children: Zachary, Aziza, and MusaKasanga; by her son Isaac Starr of Edgartown, Massachusetts; by her sister Jean Olson and and her husband, George, of Montpelier and their family; by her sister Mary Gulbrandsen and her husband, David, of Perkinsville; and by her former spouse and longtime friend Robert Starr of Lyndonville. She was predeceased by her mother, Marguerite Remington, in 2005. , 93, of Sheffield died Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at her home. A daughter of Walter and Clara (Baker) Bumps, Mrs. Perkins was born November 7, 1914, in Island Pond. She married Alvah O. Perkins and worked with him on their farm for several years. She also worked as a cashier at Randalls Market in West Burke and at Pierce Pharmacy in Barton for ten years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, flower gardening, birdwatching, and eating dessert. She is survived by her daughter Caroline Hill and her husband, Kevin, of Sheffield; by two grandchildren, Jeffrey Hill and his wife, Terri, of Sutton and Nicole and her husband, Eric, of Sheffield; and by one great-granddaughter, McKayla. , 46, formerly of Montpelier, died February 4, 2008, after a long illness at St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab. Ms. Moulton was born in Burlington on June 27, 1961, a daughter of Carl "Pat" and Mary E. (Harry) Moulton. She was raised in Island Pond where she attended schools. She was a graduate of North Country Union High School in Newport. She attended Vermont Job Corps in Vergennes and received a degree as a nursing assistant. She was a member of Island Pond American Legion Post 80 and a former member of the Elks Club of Montpelier. She enjoyed going to family gatherings and seeing her nieces and nephews. Family members include her sister Dorothy Couture and her husband, Neil, of Colebrook, New Hampshire; her brother Gary Moulton and his wife, Jane, of Island Pond; her longtime companion, Richard Favreau, of Montpelier; nieces and nephews: April Allin and her husband, Tom, of North Stratford, New Hampshire, Amber Brooks and her husband, Dale, of Wolcott, Dennis Couture and his wife, Pamela, of Lunenburg, Lizza Moulton and James Marcus of St. Johnsbury, and Grant Moulton of Island Pond; and five great-nieces and -nephews: Dale and Levi Brooks, Megan and Zachary Allin, and especially Jacob Moulton Marcus. She married Ivan Kelsey, who predeceased her in 1994. She won a national poetry award, and her poetry was often published in the Chronicle and the Newport Daily Express. She was a strong supporter of the Newport City Concert Band and often read poems at the summer concerts. She was a member of the Newport Advent Church. She is survived by a son, Dale Woods, of Newport; by daughter Edna Petit and her husband, Gary, of Coventry; by four grandchildren: Dale and his wife, Judy, of Bristol, John and his wife, Jennifer, of Essex Center, Peter Woods of Newport, and Joshua LaClair of Manchester, New Hampshire; by three great-grandsons: Seneca, Lance, and Daniel; and by several nieces and nephews. , 82, of Barton, formerly of Irasburg, died peacefully February 5, 2008, at Union House Nursing Home in Glover. Mrs. Fisher was born October 28, 1925, in Jersey City, New Jersey, a daughter of Mable Kinsman. On July 4, 1945, she married Philip Fisher, who predeceased her on September 18, 2001. She was the Irasburg town clerk for 25 years until she retired in 1987. She was a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Irasburg Ladies Aid, Irasburg Home Dem, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and the IrasburgUnitedChurch, where she served as a member of the executive board. She taught school in a one-room schoolhouse for several years in Irasburg. She enjoyed quilting, cross-stitching, playing piano, doing puzzles, knitting, crocheting, gardening, and playing cards with friends. In her younger years, she and her husband, Phil, enjoyed going to dances. She was always very supportive of community events, especially the Irasburg Church Fair. Even being as busy as she was, her family was always first and foremost, and she delighted in family gatherings and visits. She is survived by her children: Christine Reed and her husband, Robert, of Orleans, Rocky Chaffee and her husband, Tom, of Albany, Charles Fisher and his wife, Jane, of Irasburg, Darlene Plante and her husband, Ron, of Derby, Mavene Waterhouse and her husband, Stephen, of Craftsbury, and Norene Roberts and her husband, Steve, of Newport Center; by nine grandchildren; by four great-grandchildren; by her sister Rhondda Heil and her husband, Carl, of New York; by her sister-in-law Becky Powers and her husband, Raymond, of Irasburg; and by several nieces and nephews. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, picking blueberries, walking in the woods, and entertaining. , 83, of Roswell, New Mexico, died February 11, 2008, at a New Mexico care center. Mr. Wilson was born May 10, 1924, in South Albany to Clarence and Lida Bean Wilson, who predeceased him, as did two brothers, Grant and Gilbert Wilson; two sisters, Rena and Avis Sweeney; and a granddaughter, Tara Wilson. He married Cherrie D. Maranville on June 19, 1950, in South Albany. She survives him. He worked as a school director at the Albany Community School. He was a dairy farmer. He was a justice of the peace in Albany for several years, and that was his most enjoyable work. He worked for seven years at Ralston, Purina, and Checkerboard feeds in St. Johnsbury. He and his wife moved to Roswell in 1975 due to cardiac disease. He is survived by sons Alden Clarence Wilson Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Roswell and Brian Wilson and his wife, Julie, of Robinson, Illinois; by granddaughter Ellen Wilson of Robinson; by grandson Jarred Wilson of Roswell; and by nephew Dean Sweeney and his wife, Ruth, of Newport. Mr. O'Keefe was born June 10, 1934, in Island Pond, a son of Leon and Annie (Langmaid) O'Keefe. He married Dorothy Lemay, who predeceased him. He worked several years at Ethan Allen in Island Pond. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and spending time with his brother and other family members. He is survived by his children Angela Cook and her husband, Kenneth, of Orleans and Shane O'Keefe and his wife, Jane, of Manchester, New Hampshire; by five grandchildren; by one great-grandchild; by several stepchildren; and by his brother Cecil O'Keefe of Island Pond.
