, 74, of Slalom Lane, Franconia, N.H., passed away at the Littleton Regional Hospital on Monday, July 21. She was born in New York City, daughter of Jack and Martha (Dowling) Nicolais. She has resided in Franconia for the past 25 years. She was a graduate of the Miseracordia School of Nursing in New York. Since her husband was a career military man, she lived in many locations prior to retiring in Franconia. She spent most of her time with her family, but also enjoyed reading, watching sports, and doing crossword puzzles. She was also very active with her husband in attending Nights of Columbus events. She is survived by her husband Daniel Walsh, of Franconia; five sons, Daniel C. Walsh, Jr., of Franconia, John M. Walsh, os Seattle, Wash., William A. and wife Jennie Walsh, Littleton, N.H., Timothy P. Walsh, New York City, Kevin B. Walsh, Littleton; a daughter Kathleen Patricia Walsh, Freedom, N.H.; and one grandson Nicholas. Visiting hours will be at the Ross Funeral Home, Littleton, Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, Franconia. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery, Franconia.

, 55, of St. Johnsbury, passed away Sunday, July 20, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. She was born May 31, 1953, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Otto and Marilyn (Miller) Wirth. She received her schooling in Brooklyn and graduated from Smithtown High School in 1971. She graduated from the State University of New York in Plattsburgh in 1975. She was employed at the Brighton Elementary School in Island Pond where she taught second grade for 33 years, until her retirement in June of this year. In November 1991, Ellen was named Superior Teacher by the State of Vermont and in April of 1997 was named State of Vermont Teacher of the Year. Survivors include one sister, Nancy C. Morin, of Dalton, Mass.; one brother, Eric C. Wirth, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and several nieces and nephews. At her request, private graveside services will be held at the family lot in the Ascutney Cemetery in Windsor. Martin J. Maynard

of Danville died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, July 22, 2008, at the age of 84. He was born June 30, 1924, the seventh of 13 children born to Fred and Julia (Sinon) Maynard of Cabot. Martin began working on the St. J. & L.C. railroad before enlisting in the U.S.M.C. in Rutland on Nov. 28, 1942. He was honorably discharged Dec. 15, 1945, after a two year tour of duty in the Asiatic Pacific theatre. On his return, and for the next 29 years, he was a section foreman for the St. J. and L.C. On July 6, 1947, Martin married the love of his life, Freda Carson, and together they raised two children, Matthew and Gail. As a lifelong resident of Danville, Martin was active in the community, the Congregational Church, and was a member of the American Legion Post #53. Martin is survived by his wife of 61 years, Freda; his son Matthew and wife Teri of Charlotte, Vt.; his daughter Gail Corlett and husband Bill of Wardensville, W.V.; nine grandchildren: Megan, Hilary, Dorn, Kristine, Karyn, Sandra, Sarah, Joshua, and James; nine great-grandchildren; one brother Frederick; four sisters: Freda, Isabelle, Theresa, and Virginia; many nieces and nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Elizabeth and Doris; five brothers, Earnest, Kenneth, Darcy, and infant brothers David and Darrell. Memorial services will be held Friday, July 25, at 2 p.m., at the Danville Congregational Church with the pastor, the Rev. Douglas Carter, officiating. Burial with military honors will precede the service at 1 p.m. at the Danville Green Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #53; over the years, Martin was a faithful participant in their military honors detail. , 80, of Plains Road, Monroe, N.H., died on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, peacefully with his family by his side. He was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., July 12, 1928, the son of Owen H. and Della (Kay) Quimby. Mr. Quimby graduated from St. Johnsbury Trade School and served with the U. S. Marine Corps from Aug. 28, 1946, to July 19, 1948. He worked as a mechanic for New England Power at the Comerford Station, Barnet, Vt., until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Monroe Men's Club and Monroe Community Church. Sherman was an avid outdoorsmen, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, and had a passion for picking berries. He also enjoyed riding his scooter. During the winter months, he enjoyed going to area high school basketball games. He also enjoyed woodworking and building his own home. He was particularly fond of his grandchildren and great grandchildren and spoke with them regularly to keep up to date with their lives. He was predeceased by a son, Michael Quimby on July 22, 1996; a sister, Mary Lasnier; and a brother, Richard Quimby. Survivors include a daughter, Linda White and husband Gary of Monroe, N.H.; a son, Timothy Quimby and wife Sandy of Barnet; five grandchildren, Christine White, Michelle White, Jennifer Quimby and fiancé Stacey, Beth Cutter and husband Jody and Nicholas Quimby; two great-granddaughters and four great-grandsons; and several nieces, nephews and cousin Bernice Quimby. A calling hour will be on Friday, July 25, from 1 to 2 p.m., with the funeral service following at 2 p.m., at the Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH, with Rev. , 69, of Lyndonville, died Wednesday evening July 23, 2008, at the Veteran's Affairs Hospital in White River Jct., surrounded by his family. He was born July 12, 1939, in Lebanon, N.H., the son of Alexander and Carrie (Doe) Carr. Jay graduated from Lebanon High School and then entered the US Army where he served for six years as a mechanic and a sharp shooter. On Feb. 9, 1963, he married Corinne Jarry. They raised their family in Lebanon until 1972 when Jay was promoted with Twin State Electric Co. and became the branch manager in their St. Johnsbury location and moved his family to Lyndonville. Later he worked for St. Johnsbury Paper Co. for several years. Jay was a member of the V.F.W. Post 10038 of Lyndonville where he served as quartermaster for ten years. He also was a member of the American Legion Post 30 of Lyndon. He loved deer hunting by bow and rifle. He excelled in down hill, cross country, and ski jumping. He enjoyed golfing, woodworking, pitching horse shoes, and spending time with family and friends. Survivors include two children, Christopher Carr and wife Sonya of Lyndonville, and Jennifer Dwyer and husband Richard of St. Johnsbury; four grandchildren, Paige and Owen Carr, Jeremy Dwyer and Christine, and April Dwyer; two great grandchildren, Karter Dwyer and Aidan Phillips; a brother, Eugene Carr and wife Cecile of Lebanon; a sister, June Lewis and husband Dr. John Lewis of New Jersey; his mother in-law, Cecile Jarry of Lebanon; four sisters-in-law, Mary Carr of Lebanon, Connie and Roy Emerson of Lebanon, Marion and Jon Stearns of Lebanon, and Regina and Bryan Laraway of Lyme, N.H.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jay was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Corinne Carr in 2006; his parents; a brother, Curley Carr; and a brother in-law, Robert Jarry. Graveside funeral services with military honors will be held Saturday Aug. 2, 2008, at 1 p.m., at St. Elizabeth Cemetery on Hill Street in Lyndonville. There will be no visiting hours. , of East Hardwick, passed away suddenly at Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin on Monday, July 21, 2008. Maria was born on Oct. 14, 1982, at C.V.H. She attended elementary school in Hardwick and graduated from Hazen Union School in the class of 2001. She continued her education at Cobleskill College in Cobleskill, N.Y. On July 29, 2006, she married Daniel Michaud. She was employed at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Vermont in Montpelier. On Aug. 5, 2007, Maria and Daniel were blessed with a daughter, Natalie Ann Michaud. She was a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, daughter-in-law, sister, sister-in-law and friend. She loved photography. She was always photographing her daughter, Natalie, and other family members. She enjoyed scrapbooking her photographs and reading to Natalie. She also loved spending time with her family and friends, but most of all she loved being a wife and mother. Maria leaves behind her husband and best friend, Daniel Michaud, and their beautiful one-year-old daughter, Natalie Ann; her parents, Dennis and Lori Demers of East Hardwick; her sisters: Tonia Gray and her boyfriend, Kevin, of Barton, and Dennise Demers and her fiancé, Corey, of Burlington; her brothers: Tyler Demers and his wife, Michelle, of East Hardwick, Jesse Demers, of San Diego, Calif., Nicholas Demers, of East Hardwick, Shawn Gray and his girlfriend, Sophia, of Lake Charles, La., and Robert Agresti and his wife, Anna, and their children, Dylan and Alicia, of Rye, N.H. She also leaves her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Denis and Claire Michaud; her brother-in-law, Jeremy and his wife, Leslie, and their children, Lincoln, Gabriel and Morgan; her brother-in-law, Travis and his wife, Chrystal, and their children, Hunter and Haley, all of East Hardwick; a special family friend, Landon Thompson, of Hardwick; grandparents, Ruth Silver, of East Hardwick, and Donald Ferland and Madeline, of Greensboro Bend; Dan's grandmothers, Marie Paule Michaud, of Eastb Hardwick, and Dorothy Perron, of Glover; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Maria was predeceased by her mother, Nancy Agresti; her grandparents, George and Bernadette Demers, Grandpa Gary and Uncle Louis; Dan's grandfathers, Yvon Michaud and Norman Perron. Maria was taken from us so suddenly. We don't know how we will go on without her. We loved her so much. Visiting hours will be held Friday evening, 6 to 9 p.m. at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home, 60 Elm Street, Hardwick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 26, 2008, at 11 a.m., at St. Norbert's Catholic Church in Hardwick with Father Peter O'Leary and Father Michael Augustinowitz celebrants. Arlena R. Placey

passed on July 23 at Brookside Nursing Home in Wilder, surrounded by her three daughters. She was predeceased by her husband Ralph, and is survived by her daughters Diane Placey, Lynda Colton, Judy Placey, five grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Born Feb. 23, 1921, in West Stewartstown, N.H., to Fay and Amy Richardson. She attended schools in West Stewartstown and later McIndoe Falls Academy. She married Ralph Placey on July 31, 1940, and worked in Bridgeport, Conn., as part of the war effort while Ralph served overseas in the U.S. army. She later joined her husband in Port Townsend, Wash., when he returned stateside to finish his enlistment. The couple returned to settle in St. Johnsbury Center. An avid gardener, Mrs. Placey and her husband were known for their extensive gardens on their Stark District Road farm. She enjoyed bowling competitively for many years, traveling to tournaments in Florida, Arizona, and Washington. Graveside services will be held at St. Johnsbury Center Cemetery at 1 p.m., on Saturday, July 26, 2008.

He was born in St. Johnsbury on Feb. 17, 1917, the son of Thomas F. and Mabel (Little) Somers. He had worked for Georgia-Pacific. There are no known survivors. Raymond J. "Mickey" Belmore Jr.

, age 57, Littleton, N.H., passed away on Friday, July 25, at the Littleton Regional Hospital. "Mickey" was born on Feb. 4, 1951, a son to Raymond J. Belmore, Sr. and Louise (Ripley) Belmore, in Marlborough, Mass. He attended and graduated from Marlborough High School. Mickey was employed by the New England Telephone for his entire career until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of the Littleton Elks Club, The Alderbrook Sportsman Association, NRA, Bethlehem Country Club, and Trout Unlimited. He was a former Youth Hockey Coach and a former assistant golf coach for Littleton High School. He enjoyed bird hunting with his dog, Daisy. Surviving family members include his wife, Naomi Belmore of Littleton, N.H.; one son, Andrew Belmore of Littleton, N.H.; his mother, Louise Belmore of Ellington, Fla.; and two sisters, Rose Mary McCarthy and Betty Anne Marino, both of Ellington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, July 28, at 11 a.m., at the St. Rose of Lima Church, with Rev. Fr. Marcel Martel as Celebrant. A gathering will follow in the church hall immediately after Mass. , 12, of Walker Hill Road, Lisbon, N.H., drowned in the Connecticut River in South Hadley, Mass., around 3 p.m., on Saturday, July 19. He was born in Springfield, Mass., on Aug. 31, 1995, and moved to Lisbon with his dad in 2000. Anthony was an eighth grader at Lisbon Regional School where his favorite subject was physical education. He loved fishing, the Boston Red Sox, NASCAR, Choppers and Bobbers, drawing and hanging out with friends. Anthony is survived by his dad, Mark; step mom, Amanda Goodness; and half sister, Felicia, of Lisbon. Anthony's mom, Debra Keefe, step dad, Dana Samkin, and four half brothers and sisters: Melissa, Marylynn, Garrick, and Summer, of South Hadley, Mass., also survive him, as well as many special friends. There will be a wake for Anthony Day on Friday, July 25, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Ryder Funeral Home, 33 Lamb St., South Hadley, Mass. Anthony has been cremated and will rest in a Boston Red Sox urn. The wake is open for anyone to attend. There will be a memorial service for Anthony in this area, but those plans have yet to be finalized.

, 84, beloved wife of the late Henry Morris, died Friday, July 25, 2008, at her home in South Windsor, Conn. Born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., on Jan. 18, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Abbey (Hall) Field. She had lived in South Windsor for the last 40 years. In her early years, Joyce was an accomplished artist, having graduated from Vesper George School of Art in Boston. She then worked as an art designer at Macy's in New York City before getting married in 1946. As a military wife, she raised five children as they moved around the country. In her later years, she worked for the Mary Cheney Library of Manchester; for Manchester High as a nurse's aide, and, still later, for the VNA as a Hospice volunteer. She was a long-time member of the Wapping Community Church of South Windsor. One of her joys, remembered by many, was her passion for baking pies and cakes. She leaves her children, Brent Morris and his wife, Sheila, of Las Vegas, Nev., Kirk Morris and his wife, Maryann, of Vernon, Craig Morris and his wife, Billie, of Sacramento, Calif., Timothy Morris of White River Jct., Vt., and Sherilyn Starrett of Vernon; two sisters, Mildred Hope Berry, of Bristol, and Marilyn Rank and her husband, Leon (Bill), of Ballston Lake, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer and Sarah Starrett and Julie, Stephen, Tyler, Trevor, and David Morris; and several nieces and nephews. Her family will receive friends on Wednesday, from 5-7 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor, Conn. , 89, of Leonardtown, Md. and formerly of St. Johnsbury, passed away Friday, July 11, 2008, at home. Born Sept. 20, 1918, in Messina, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late George and Ruth (Howard) Laventura. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter W. Sevigny in 1959 and her sister, Pauline Jaffarian of Sarasota, Fla. in 2001. She worked as a nurse at St. Johnsbury Hospital and Brightlook Hospital while raising her family. In her spare time, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting and doing other crafts. In 1970 she married Leo F. Sullivan and they resided in New Hampshire until 1988 when they moved to Maryland to be near her daughter. Survivors include her husband; three children Walter Sevigny and his wife Marylene, of Danville, Vt., Dianne (Sevigny) Pellettiere and her husband George, of Hughesville, Md. and Reginald Sevigny and his wife Martha of Barkhamsted, Conn.; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and her sister, Lillian Scott, of Exeter, N.H. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in St. Johnsbury.

, age 66, of Lyndonville, passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at home surrounded by his loving family. Born, July 21, 1942, in St. Johnsbury. He is the son of Everett and Bernadine (Marcotte) Perkins. He married Kathleen E Moulton on Aug. 2, 1964, in Groton. He served in the US Army. Bob was a "jack of all trades," but enjoyed his many years as a Community Outreach Worker. Bob loved spending time with his family, they were the love of his life, he enjoyed helping others, was active in politics for many years, enjoyed hunting and fishing before his health prevented him. Bob is survived by his loving wife of nearly 44 years, Kathleen of Lyndonville; his children and their spouses and families, daughter, Robin and Robert Pugh their children Echo Perkins & fiancé Joshua Szymanik, Mallory Pugh, Christine Pugh, Russell Pugh; son Rob & Konda Perkins their children, Samuel Perkins, Benjamin Perkins; foster daughter, Rose & Barry Small their children, Mark Faust, Jr. and friend Jessica, Amanda & Shawn Bolio, Kasey Small; great grandson, Adam Bolio; his mother Bernadine. , 94, of St. Johnsbury, passed away Monday, July 28, 2008, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He and his sister Marie had made their home together on the corner of Winter and Spring streets in St. Johnsbury and for the past few years at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center. He was born in Ste. Rose de Dorchester, Quebec on Nov. 19, 1913, one of six children born to Philibert and Marie Anne (Chabot) Sylvain. He was also predeceased by two brothers: Charles Sylvain of St. Johnsbury in 1999 and his wife Lydia in 2007, and years ago by a brother Laurent Sylvain of Ste. Rose, Quebec; two sisters: Laurence Marie Veilleux of St. Johnsbury in 1998, and years ago by a sister Marie-Ange Gagnon of Ste. Rose, Quebec. The Sylvain family came to Vermont in the fall of 1934. George worked on the farm with his father on the New Boston Road where the Mt. Pleasant Trailer Park is now. After his father passed away in 1965, George then sold the farm in 1969. He kept busy working as a custodian at the Fairbanks Museum from 1970 to 1977. After retiring, he liked helping with odds and ends at his nephew's farm located at the end of Sylvain Road. He is survived by his sister Marie Sylvain of the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center (1248 Hospital Dr. 05819) and several nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be celebrated this Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home Friday evening 6 to 8 p.m. and will conclude with an evening prayer service at 7:45 p.m. Memorial contributions, marked for "Resident Activity Fund," could be directed to St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center, 1248 Hospital Dr., St. Johnsbury VT 05819.

, 70, of Gilman, died suddenly on Monday, July 28, at Weeks Medical Center following a brief illness. Born in Concord, on Oct. 10, 1937, a daughter of Miles and Annie (Rooney) Quigley, she graduated from Concord High School before moving to Virginia to attend a special school for physically disabled students. After successfully completing her education, Betty relocated to Barton where she worked as a nurse's aide in Orleans. She eventually returned to Gilman where she was employed as a librarian and also wrote the Gilman News' column for the weekly Coos County Democrat in Lancaster, N.H. She successfully completed her certification as an EMT and served with the Gilman Rescue Squad for several years. She was a communicant of St. Theresa's Church in Gilman and St. Leo's Church in Lunenburg and served as a lector at both. She was also employed as the church secretary. Betty is survived by her sister, Lorraine Marshall, of Jefferson, N.H.; her niece, Kathi Marshall, also of Jefferson; and many other nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Her sister Colleen McBride and her brother, Miles Quigley Jr., died previously. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 31, at 2 p.m., at All Saints Church in Lancaster. Rev. Raymond A. Ball will officiate. Burial will follow immediately at St. Matthew's Cemetery in Whitefield, N.H. , age 53, of Buxton, passed away on July 22, 2008, in Scarborough, surrounded by her husband and family. She was born in Lyndonville on July 29, 1954, to the late Charles and Avis (McQueen) Norrie. She worked at the Governor's Restaurant in South Portland for many years. She was loved by all and was very devoted to her family and friends. She loved life and enjoyed working in her flower beds and gardens, and loved the horses that she and her husband owned. Laurel enjoyed going to the races at Scarborough Downs. She enjoyed crafting, knitting, and made candy and cakes at Christmas and Easter for family and friends. She is predeceased two brothers, Ronald Norrie and William Norrie. She is survived by her husband Michael Haskell; a son, Claude Maillet, of Brattleboro; a daughter, Kara (Piadade) Elliott and her husband Daniel of Hinsdale, N.H.; step daughter Melanie Piadade, also of Hinsdale; four grandchildren; a sister Marilyn Norrie Jones, of North Concord, Vt.; two brothers Bradley Norrie and his wife Darlene of Concord, Vt., and George Norrie and his wife Sandra of Ware, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews, cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews.
