William J. "Bill" Achilles

, 77, of Athens, Tenn., died Saturday, July 5, 2008, at Athens Regional Medical Center. A native of Boltonville, he was a resident of Athens for more than 43 years. He lived in Groton for a number of years where he attended school and graduated from Groton High School. He worked for several years in Groton and moved to Tennessee when he married in 1965. Achilles was a son of the late Freeland James and Georgina Flanders Achilles, and was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Bailey; and one brother, Albert Achilles. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was retired from Taylor Pittsburg after 30 years of service. He was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church, where he was a charter member for more than 35 years and also taught Sunday school and served as a trustee and treasurer. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Ina Pressley Achilles of Athens; two sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Cathy Pressley of Miami, Fla., and Freeland and Deanna Achilles of Athens; one sister, Alice Morse of Warrensburg, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Amanda Martinez and her husband Dru, Matthew Pressley, Cathleen Pressley and Chris, Beth, Abby and Alli Achilles; and one great-grandson, Anthony Martinez. Funeral services were held on July 13.
Patrick J. Ferland

, age 90, of Hardwick, passed away due to heart failure on Wednesday, July 16, at the Greensboro Nursing Home. Patrick was born in Hardwick on June 6, 1918, three years after his parents, the late Davila and Delina Ferland migrated to Vermont from St. Germaine, Quebec. Patrick was one of 14 children. On Nov. 8, 1944, Patrick and Theresa Renaud were married at St. Norbert's Church in Hardwick. They made Spring Street in Hardwick their home for 64 years where they raised a family of two girls and six boys. Patrick attended graded schools at Hardwick-Center Road School and then Greensboro until the age of 13 at which time he set out on his own. He spent several years with other family members in Bermuda helping to expand their road system. Patrick spent many years working on farms, working in the woods and working as a barber in Hardwick. Patrick retired in 1982 from the Hardwick Elementary School where he had been in charge of the custodial and maintenance services for over 20 years. Patrick will be greatly missed by his wife, Theresa; their children, Patrick of Barton, Helen Willey of Hardwick, Linda Tucker and husband Bruce of Woodbury, Reginald, Russell and wife Debbie, Karl, Bradley and wife Sharon, and Tod and wife Lori, all of Hardwick; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves brothers and sisters, Jeannette Tracey of Windsor, Conn.; Ronald Ferland of East Montpelier; Yvette Ribaudo of Naples, Fla.; Claire Burns of Providence, R.I.; Robert Ferland of Barre; and many, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Marguerite Fournier and Elaine Hill; and brothers, Eudore, Philip, Raymond, Lawrence and Henry Ferland. Patrick had been an active member of St. Norbert's Church serving as an usher for many years and was a lifetime member of the Knights Columbus. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, July 19, at 11 a.m., at St. Norbert's Church in Hardwick. Interment will follow the meal later in the afternoon at Fairview Cemetery. Francis J. Manning

, 75, of Island Pond died on Wednesday, July 16, 2008, from complications of Alzheimer's disease. He passed at the home of his daughters Kathryn and Tammie, in Portsmouth, N.H., while surrounded by loving family. Francis was born in Montreal, Quebec, on March 18, 1933. He was the son of Alfred "George" and Grace Winifred Manning. Francis graduated from St. Mary's Academy, Island Pond, in 1951. He served in the Vermont Army National Guard, 43rd Infantry Division and was ordered to active military service on May 13, 1953. He was honorably discharged May 1955. Frank spent his career working for the Canadian National Railroad, and after 47 years of service as a a brakeman/conductor, he retired in 1995. He was an active member of the Island Pond community and was passionate about the town's past, present, and future welfare. He showed his dedication by serving as the President of the Island pond Historical Society, where he was instrumental in acquiring grants to preserve the Island Pond railroad station, a historical landmark for the town. In conjunction, he gave his services to the following: Selectmen for the town of Brighton, Council member of St. James Church, Fourth Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Commander of American Legion, Brighton Post 80, Chairman of the Brighton Elementary School board. In addition to acting locally, Francis extended his services to state and national politics, serving three terms as a Representative in the Vermont State Legislature. Francis was known as a leader. A leader who was never afraid to voice his opinions, favorable or not, and never strayed away from his true beliefs. His family and friends will miss his compassion, charm, and his ever present quick wit and great sense of humor. Francis will be remembered as a loyal friend, devoted husband and father, leaving his legacy through his family and the history of his beloved hometown. Francis is predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Christine Caron Manning, who died Oct. 11, 2003. He is survived by his children, Gregory of Phoenix, Ariz., Tammie and Kathryn of Portsmouth, N.H., and John of Marysville, Ohio; and his 10 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Jack Pinette of Groveton, N.H. Viewing hours are 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, at Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 1199 Railroad St., Island Pond, VT. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 21, at 11 a.m., at St. James Catholic Church. The Reverend Francis Connor will be celebrating a Mass of Christian burial. , 96, of Harley View Acres, died peacefully on July 16, 2008, at Cottage Hospital, Woodsville, N.H., with her family by her side. Marion was born in Jersey City, N.J., on Jan. 12, 1912, to Adam J. and Bessie (Trenery) Ruby. She was a graduate of Cliffside Park High School in New Jersey, and later attended secretarial college. She married Kenneth R. Hunter on Oct. 22, 1938, who predeceased her on June 30, 1981. While raising her family, she was employed as a secretary and taught Sunday school. Marion and Ken moved to Newbury, in 1976. In 1979 they returned to New Jersey before eventually settling in Monroe in 1981. Marion was a member and treasurer of the Monroe United Methodist Church and a former member of the First Congregational Church of Newbury. She was a longtime volunteer at the Grafton County Nursing Home where in 2005 she received a Special Achievement Award for 18 years of service. She was a past associate of the Grafton County Home Association, volunteered with the RSVP program and was an active member of the Cottage Hospital Auxiliary. She was a co-founder of the Bone Building Group of Monroe and served as a leader at its weekly exercise sessions. Marion is survived by two sons, Kenneth A. Hunter and wife Barbara of New Durham, N.H., and Wayne D. Hunter and wife Jeanette of West Berlin; two granddaughters, Nancy Hunter Rogers and husband Gary and their son, 7-week-old Henry Hunter Rogers. of Jericho. and Jennifer Hunter, of Charlotte, N.C. Her brother Elmer J. Ruby also predeceased her. Calling hours will be Monday, July 21, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, N.H. , 79, of Lyndonville, died peacefully Friday evening July 18, 2008, at his home with family and friends by his side. He was born March 21, 1929, in North Adams, Mass., the son of Joseph and Eva (Corey) Ziter. Herb was raised in Barre, Vt., and attended St. Monica's School. In 1947 he graduated from Spaulding High School. He then studied accounting at St. Michael's College for two years. On April 21, 1951, he married Dorothy McDonald. Herb served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in Germany where he worked with Radio Free Europe. He also was a meteorologist and a ballistics expert. The Ziter's raised their family in Barre. Herb was a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Monica's Church, the Elks Lodge of Barre, and served as a director of the Vermont Boy Scouts Council for several years. In 1966, following a promotion to District Manager for Prudential Insurance Co., Herb moved his family to Lyndonville and worked in the St. Johnsbury Prudential Ins. office. He and his co-workers received many awards for their achievements with Prudential. He had been a member of the Lyndonville Rotary Club, and also served as a director of Caledonia Home Health Inc. in St. Johnsbury for several years. A hunting camp in Washington, Vt., was very special to Herb and his family. They also enjoyed fishing and camping at Willoughby Lake. Herb was proud of his family and his most enjoyable times were spent with family and friends. Survivors include two children, Herbert Ziter Jr. and his wife Barbara of Waterford, and Ann Anders and her husband Mark of Lake Clark Shores, Fla.; four grandchildren, Michelle Fox and husband Joe, Tyler and Toby Burnham, and Riley Anders; four great grandchildren, Patrick and Ashley Fox, and Sandra and Devin Burnham; two sisters in-law, Theresa Ziter of Enfield, Conn., and Shirley Rivard and husband Roger of Barre; several nieces and nephews; and his longtime best friend, Margaret Cole of Lyndonville. He was predeceased by his parents; his loving wife of 48 years, Dorothy Ziter in 1999; his daughter, Sandra Burnham in 1999; his grandson, Jeffrey Ziter in 2003; his brother, David Ziter; and a sister in-law, Eleanor Turcotte. Friends may meet with the family Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Guibord Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday July 23, at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Lyndonville. Burial in St. Elizabeth Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family. , 78, of Wild Ammonoosuc Road, Swiftwater, N.H., died July 18, 2008, with her family at her side. She was born in Haverhill, N.H., May 7, 1930, the daughter of Fred and Bernice (Hoyt) Moses. Mrs. Elliott's family was the center of her life. She was married to Robert Elliott, Sr. on June 6, 1949, and he predeceased her on May 12, 1978. She was also predeceased by her father, Fred on June 16, 1970, her mother, Bernice on May 5, 2001, and by a great grandson Owen Michael McKean on Nov. 9, 2005. Surviving family include four daughters Linda Nash and husband Doug of Bath, N.H., Roberta Phelps and husband Dale of Swiftwater, Valerie Avery and husband Ralph of Bath, and Lisa Avery and husband Joseph of Monroe, N.H.; two sons Robert Elliott, Jr. and wife Carol, of Ashland, N.H. and Francis Elliott of Rochester, N.H.; 11 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. A graveside funeral service will be on Tuesday, July 22, at 2 p.m. in Swiftwater Cemetery, with Pastor Dan Chamberland of Calvary Baptist Church, Woodsville, N.H., officiating. , 96, of Walden Hill Road in Danville, died July 17, 2008, at Rowan Court Nursing Home in Berlin, Vermont. He was born Nov. 23, 1912, in Danville, the son of Newton Booth Page and Jessie James Page. Jim was the last surviving child of his parents' nine children. He attended school in Danville. On Oct. 28, 1944, he married Mabel Noble in Richmond, Quebec, Canada. She predeceased him in 2004. In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by brothers Stanley, Carl and Max; and by sisters Bernice Blair, Addie Carhart, Winifred Olsaver, Mamie Page and infant sister Florence. He is survived by a number of nieces, nephews and cousins, and special friends Everett Drew, Jack Kemp, Bob French, Garey Larrabee and Jenny Rafuse. A graveside burial service will be held at the Danville Green Cemetery Saturday, July 26, 2008, at 5 p.m. In accordance with Jim's wishes, there will be no calling hours. , of Lyndonville, passed away Monday, July 21, 2008, at the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital at the age of 91. Doris was born and raised in Wheelock on April 16, 1917. She is the daughter of Willie and Lena (Noyes) Mitchem. She married Clinton H. Randall, spending most of their lives in East Lyndon raising their family. Doris worked as a Nurse's Aide many years at the Darling Inn and then as a Nurse's Aide and Cook for many years at Pine Knoll. She enjoyed spending time with her family and family outings. She also enjoyed sewing, needlework, reading, and riding on the train to visit family in New Jersey. Doris is survived by two children and their spouses, daughter, Nancy and Merton Leonard of West Burke, and son, Ronald and Sue Randall of Sevierville, Tenn.; six grandchildren; several great- and great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Catherine Randall Kartrude of Lake Worth, Fla.; and a special niece, Helen Bowen of Newport Center. She was predeceased by her husband, Clinton, on Oct. 31, 1995. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. , of Danville, passed away on July 21 at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital after a brief illness. A long-time resident and active member of the Danville community, Margaret was 92. She was the wife of Richard Ide, who died in 1979, and the mother of Timothy Ide, of Danville, William Ide, Mary Ide Swainbank, of Danville, and Senator Robert Ide of Peacham. Born in St. Johnsbury to Raymond and Alida Howe Pearl, Margaret Morrison Pearl grew up in St. Johnsbury and graduated from the Academy in 1934. She graduated from Lasell Junior College in 1936, and attended the University of Michigan. Later in life, she took courses at the University of Vermont, Lyndon State College, and Johnson State College, receiving her degree from Johnson State in 1981 at the age of 64. Margaret Ide was director of the Danville school lunch program for many years. She also was employed by Noyle Johnson Insurance as a bookkeeper and licensed agent. She was one of the founding members of the Danville Senior Meals Program, and of The Open Door, an ecumenical organization in Danville which supplies food and clothing to people in need. She was a trustee of the Pope Memorial Library, and gave her time to 4-H, the Girl Scouts, and PTA. While residing in Florida in retirement, she volunteered in a hospice program, and was an active member of the retirement community of Eldorado Village in Largo, Florida. In recent years, she has lived in the Grand View Senior Apartments in Danville, and at Joes Pond in the summer. Active as a volunteer at the Open Door until recently, Margaret also enjoyed baking, reading, and knitting. She was a long-time active member of the Danville Congregational Church. Margaret Ide is survived by three children; their spouses, Jenness Ide, Dan Swainbank, and Martha Ide; her brother William Pearl of Danville and his wife Lucia; seven grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Richard, her son William Ide and his wife Diane Milliken Ide, a nephew, and a great-granddaughter. A burial service was held on July 22 for the family. A memorial service will be held at the Danville Congregational Church on Saturday, July 26, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in Margaret's name to: The Danville Congregational Church Memorial Fund, P.O.
