....show , 80, of Plains Road, died on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 peacefully with his family by his side. He was born in St. Johnsbury, VT, July 12, 1928 the son of Owen H. and Della (Kay) Quimby. Mr. Quimby graduated from St. Johnsbury Trade School and served with the U. S. Marine Corps from August 28, 1946 to July 19, 1948. He worked as a mechanic for New England Power at the Comerford Station, Barnet, VT until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Monroe Men s Club and Monroe Community Church. Sherman was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, and had a passion for picking berries. He also enjoyed riding his scooter. During the winter months, he enjoyed going to area high school basketball games. He also enjoyed woodworking and building his own home. He was particularly fond of his grandchildren and great grandchildren and spoke with them regularly to keep up to date with their lives. He was predeceased by a son, Michael Quimby on July 22, 1996; a sister, Mary Lasnier; and a brother, Richard Quimby. Survivors include a daughter, Linda White and husband Gary of Monroe, NH; a son, Timothy Quimby and wife Sandy of Barnet, VT; five grandchildren, Christine White, Michelle White, Jennifer Quimby and fianc Stacey, Beth Cutter and husband Jody and Nicholas Quimby; 2 great granddaughters and 4 great grandsons; several nieces, nephews and cousin Bernice Quimby. ....show , 65, died quietly and peacefully on Thursday, July 31, 2008 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH when God, in His love, called her to Himself. She was born in Haverhill, NH, on October 21, 1942, the daughter of Stanley R. and Eleanor A. (Perry) Chase. Shirley attended school in Orford, NH, and graduated from Orford High School in 1960. Following high school, she attended Plymouth State College and received her Associates Degree in Education. She was married to Alton Deblois on June 9, 1962. Shirley worked at Sprague Electric in Plymouth, NH, at Dartmouth Medical School as a medical records clerk, and at Equity Publishing Company in Orford as a proofreader. She also worked as a teacher at the Rumney Baptist Christian Academy and as a substitute teacher, guidance secretary, and assistant counselor at Orford High School. Shirley was involved in her community as PTA President and OHS Alumni President. She lived for her family as her children and husband were always first in her life. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, baking, and canning, her colorful flowers, listening to music and reading. Shirley loved her church on the Atwell hill and worked there diligently in many capacities; Sunday school superintendent, church clerk, trustee, Sunday school teacher, ladies society, homecoming chairperson, and committee member. She enjoyed singing and occasionally did solos or duets at church. Shirley was predeceased by her father, Stanley Chase on January 22, 1995 and her mother Eleanor Chase on December 3, 2000. She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband of 46 years, Alton; her children Michael Deblois and wife Sue of Colchester, IL, Richard Deblois and wife Nellie of Haverhill, NH, Laura Deblois of Wilder, VT; six grandchildren, Emily, Danielle, Helen, Hannah, Shane and Nicholas; her brother Timothy Chase and wife Mary of Orford; in-laws Pete and Eula Stevens of Orford, Alice Vandenberg and husband Buddy of NY, Ruth Mesack of NY, Hazel and Joe Poitrais of NY, Bessie and Richard Clark of MS, and Lorraine Deblois of Enfield, NH; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Evelyn (Eisler) Morrill
....show , 92, of River Road, died August 5, 2008, at her residence. She was born in New York City, on July 12, 1916, a daughter of Warren Valentine and Jeannette Maude (Treulieb) Eisler. Evelyn moved to the Upper Valley in the late 1940 s and later married Charles R. Morrill. With a background in the performing arts, she used these talents in helping with musical productions, costume design, and choreography, for musical events in Piermont and Bradford, as well as, the Old Church Community Theatre. She was predeceased by her husband on May 20, 1986. Survivors include her son Joel E. Schmuckler of Piermont, two brothers, Leroy I. Eisler of Sacramento, CA, and Everett Eisler of Buffalo, WY, one niece, and 4 nephews. There will be no calling hours. Ralph M. Streeter
....show , 84, of North Bayley Hazen Road, died on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at his residence with his family by his side. He was born in Wells River, VT, March 31, 1924, the son of Earl and Mabel (Chamberlain) Streeter. Ralph worked on several farms throughout the area during his youth. Ralph attended a refrigeration school in Rhode Island. He married Phyllis Page on August 7, 1950. Ralph and Phyllis purchased their own farm in Mosquitoville in 1950. He farmed dairy cattle at their farm while continuing to work at the Ryegate Paper Mill in East Ryegate, VT. He also started a refrigeration repair business in the area, while working on the farm and paper mill. Ralph also worked at the U. S. Air Force Radar Station in East Haven, VT for several years before moving to Watertown, NY from 1971 to 1986. He was employed at the Dry Hill Air Force Base and then later at the State Prison until his retirement in 1986 when they returned to the family farm in Mosquitoville. Ralph served on the Blue Mountain Union School Board for several years. He enjoyed maple sugaring season at his sugar house and began selling syrup in 1990. He loved to track and keep records on wildlife counts in the area. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Phyllis (Page) Streeter of Ryegate, VT; a son, Delvan E. Streeter and wife Debra of Watertown, NY; two grandchildren, Kelly Ann Monroe and husband Bill of Dexter, NY and Jordan M. Streeter of Watertown, NY; a great grandson, Nicholas Monroe; a sister, Margaret St. Lawrence of Barnet, VT; several nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. ....show , 86, of Indian Corn Mill Road, died on August 11, 2008, at Cottage Hospital, Woodsville, NH. Paul was born in Hallowell, ME, on March 26, 1922, to Levi and Hattie (Seekins) Jackson. He married Ellen Austin on December 24, 1947. He owned Jackson s Waste Oil Services in Piermont, NH, retiring in 1985. He later worked for Steenburgh Associates and Auctioneers for several years. While living in Maine, Paul served in the National Guard and drove truck for the road crews for the State of Maine. He moved from Maine to Connecticut where he lived for two years prior to moving to Newbury, VT, and East Ryegate,VT, and then to Piermont, where he resided for many years. In 1988, he moved to North Haverhill. Paul enjoyed Bingo, snowmobiling, and fishing for brook trout. He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen Jackson on January 3, 1992, and by a son, Paul W. Jackson. He is survived by his children Eileene Christie of Syracuse, NY, Paula Bennett of Atlanta, GA, Lee Jackson of North Haverhill, NH, Elizabeth Briggs of Hyde Park, NY, Patti Lynn Plante of Hartland, VT, and Brian Jackson, also of North Haverhill; and Eugene Grover of Dixmont, ME; several grandchildren and great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Paul graduated from the Wells River High School and served with the U.S. Army from October 1968 to January 1972. He also was a member of the American Legion Ross-Wood Post # 20, Woodsville, NH. He worked at the North Haverhill Convenience Store for many years. Mitchell, Jr., on April 22, 1940 and he predeceased her on December 9, 1996. Trudy moved from Monroe to Riverglen House in Littleton, NH in April 2007. She enjoyed art and painted many still life pictures and also enjoyed handwork, sewing and crocheting. She also loved animals and her pets. Survivors include three daughters Patricia E. Hedman and husband Jack of South Hero, VT, Eunice R. Bashaw of Charlestown, NH and Ila Mae Mitchell of Westminster, VT; one son, John D. ....show , 65, died at Littleton Regional Hospital on August 14, 2008, following a courageous battle with cancer, with his family by his side. Elwin was born on January 12, 1943, in Island Pond, VT, to Clifton Elwin and Hildur May (Marsden) Paye. He was raised and worked on the family farm in Island Pond before he graduated from Brighton High School in Island Pond. He later attended Lyndon State College in Lyndon, VT, and Weslyan College in Connecticut. Following college, he worked for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in Hartford, CT as a quality control supervisor. He spent his last 20 years of his employment with Pratt & Whitney stationed in Israel, before moving to Littleton in 2000. During retirement, he has enjoyed his family, gardening, and caring for his dogs and cats. He also enjoyed his travel adventures around the world. Elwin was predeceased by his parents, Clifton and Hildur Paye, and by an infant sister, Linda. He is survived by his sister, Doris Hitchcock of Littleton; his nieces Laurie Murphy and fiance Warren Dutton of Bethlehem, NH and Laurie s family Samantha Murphy, Patrick Murphy, and Lillian Tendler; Jennie King and husband Peter of Littleton and their family Cara Ann King and Heather Paye; Hildur Lavoie and husband Chris, Sr. of Bethlehem and their family Chris Jr. and Brandon; Alberta Robbins and husband Steve of Woodsville, NH and their family Kaylee Heath and Colby and Reegan Robbins; several cousins, aunt, and uncles; and his special friends Hosan and Gada who live in Israel. ....show , 86, of Cemetery Road, died on August 17, 2008, at Cottage Hospital, Woodsville, NH. Carl was born on July 25, 1922, in Waterbury, VT, to James and Mabel (Collins) Welch. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was on Iwo Jima at the time the flag was raised on Mt. Suribachi. For the last 59 years he had worked at the Bradford Veneer Mill and had continued to work full time until August 8, 2008. He was married to Rose Brown on July 26, 1987. Carl was a longtime Upper Valley resident, having lived in Bradford, VT, Piermont, NH, and Haverhill. He thoroughly enjoyed work, mowing his lawn, chopping wood and dancing. He was a member of VFW Post #5245 in North Haverhill and of Ross-Wood American Legion Post # 20 of Woodsville. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters. Carl is survived by his wife, Rose Welch of Haverhill; his daughter Jayne Eddy and husband Bill, of Malone, NY; his son Mike Welch of Barre, VT: six grandchildren and six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, and cousins. Cliff was born in Cold Spring Village, MN, of November 24, 1930, to Harry E. and Margaret (Kapsch) Winchester. At a young age, his family moved from Minnesota to South Ryegate, where he spent his entire life. He served in the United States Army from August 18, 1948 December 20, 1949, being stationed mostly in Guam. He married Lottie Batchelder on June 13, 1953. Following his time in the service, he worked as a monumental draftsman for granite dealers in the area, retiring in 1992. Cliff was a member and trustee of the South Ryegate United Presbyterian Church, the Barre Granite Association, and the 302 Buck-A-Roos snowmobile club. He and his wife Lottie enjoyed more than 40 years at their camp on Groton Pond. He spent his time hunting, fishing, gardening, and card playing. He particularly enjoyed riding his John Deere tractor and spending time with his dog, Maggie. He also enjoyed attending the Senior Meals in South Ryegate. Time spent with his wife and family was very important to him. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lottie Winchester of South Ryegate; his children Matthew Winchester and wife Marie of South Ryegate, David Winchester and wife Debbie of Ryegate Corner, VT, and Catherine Hall and husband Chuck of Woodsville, NH; six grandchildren; two sisters, Anna Su of Houston, TX and Mavis Hagler of Barre, VT; two brothers, Leon Winchester and wife Joyce and Harry Winchester both of Barre; and several nieces and nephews. Connie was born on June 10, 1925, in Burlington, VT, to Dr. Jesse M. and Theo (Way) Solomon. She married Roy E. Bixby on September 14, 1946. She was a graduate of Faulkner School of Nursing in Jamaica Plain, MA, and worked as a Registered Nurse at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, NH, and at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, from where she retired in November 1987. Connie was a member of the First Congregational Church of Newbury and the Ladies Aide of the Church. She served on the board of the Frances Atkinson Home, was the health officer for the Town of Newbury, a Justice of the Peace, and was in charge of the Newbury food shelf. Connie always took time to assist those in need within her community and beyond. She had a fondness for animals, especially cats, and enjoyed her flower and vegetable garden. She spent many relaxing summers at her camp in Alburgh, VT. She was predeceased by her husband, Roy E. Bixby on February 2, 1987; and by her sister June Chamberlin and brother James M. Solomon. She is survived by her son, Lt. Commander (USN Retired) Roy K. He worked as a stone mason with his father and then was employed as a machinist at Fairbanks Scales in St. Johnsbury, VT until he retired at age 65. Gordon was a member of the BPOE Lodge #1343 in St. Johnsbury for 63 years. He served as past Exalted Ruler, chaplain, All State and All New England. When employed at Fairbanks, he was a member of the union. Gordon was predeceased by his wife, Nancie (Orr) Russell on November 26, 1983. She was born in Groton, June 1, 1919, a daughter of George S. and Goldie (Hutchins) Welch. She graduated from Groton High School. Ida served the Town of Groton for 36 years in various capacities including Town Clerk, Treasurer and Service Officer, before retiring in 1993. She also operated Ida Dennis Real Estate from 1965 until her retirement. In her younger years, Ida played in McClure s Student Band. She had attended the Groton United Methodist Church, and was a past member of the Upper Valley Real Estate Association. She enjoyed reading during her quiet time and also her Christian Fellowship at Clark s Landing. For many years, she contributed to community events, including the Groton chicken pie supper. Most importantly, her life had centered around her children and grandchildren. Ida married Eugene F. Dennis on February 22, 1945 and he predeceased her on January 27, 2000. She was also predeceased by three sisters, Alice Puffer, Nellie Pierce, and Nettie Darling; and four brothers, Clayton, Lester, Austin, and Carlie Welch. Survivors include two daughters Linda G. Sparks and husband Frederick of Brasher Falls, NY, Kelly J. Joslin and husband David of North Haverhill, NH; two sons Alan G. Joe Dennis and wife Sandy of Bristol, CT, and Gary S. She was born in Haverhill, NH, on February 7, 1937, to Ralph E. and Arlene M. (Sandstrom) Simmons, Sr. She graduated from Wells River High School. Lorayne married Paul A. Tetreault on October 26, 1957. She worked at the Grafton County Nursing Home as a dietary aide for 17 years, retiring in 1999. Lorayne was a communicant of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Woodsville. Along with tending to her flower garden and houseplants, she spent her time reading and knitting mittens. She was a lover of animals, traveling, and dancing. Family, her children and grandchildren were a very important part of her life. She was predeceased by her father, Ralph Simmons, Sr. on June 9,1951; her mother on November 5, 2007; two grandsons, Taylor and Timothy Tetreault, both on July 6, 2003, two sisters, Rachel A. ....show , 62, died at his home surrounded by his family on August 25, 2008, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Manhattan, NY on August 30, 1945, the son of Hugh and Dr. Frances (Adams) Olsen. His early years were spent on Staten Island, NY and Philadelphia, PA. In 1958, the family moved to East Corinth where Roy attended Bradford Academy and graduated from Stowe Preparatory School in Stowe, VT in 1963. He attended Vermont Technical College in Randolph, VT and the University of Vermont. He worked at the John Williams Chicken Farm and at Pierson s Service Station prior to opening Olsen s TV in East Corinth and later in Bradford. He built and operated the cable TV system in East Corinth for 34 years. He also worked for The TV Guy in Woodsville, NH and P.E. Fletcher in Nashua, NH. In later years he was employed by Bombardier in Barre, VT and IBM in Williston, VT. On December 9, 1972, he was married to Lillian Ricker, the daughter of Rupert and Doris Ricker. They lived most of their life in East Corinth. Roy enjoyed snowmobiling, dirt biking, working on cars, and nature. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Bert was born of March 2, 1928, in East Thetford, VT, to Winfield and Wyllian (Chase) Fenoff. He was raised in Lyman, NH. He was married on February 28, 1951 to Barbara Wheeler. Soon after, he joined the US Army. They raised six children together in the Lisbon, NH area. After he was discharged from the military in 1953, he became a logger and a farmer until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of the Earl Brock American Legion Post in Newbury, VT. Bert was a well-rounded person who would do anything to assist anyone in need. Bert was predeceased by his parents, Winfield and Wyllian Fenoff; two sisters, Charlotte Spaulding and Madeline Pierce; and three brothers, Robert, Donald, and Everett Fenoff. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Fenoff; his children, William Fenoff of Littleton, NH, Janette Shepard and husband Mike of Woodsville, NH, Roberta Aldrich and husband Byron of Lyman, Gloria Thurston of Orford, NH, Sharon Fenoff of Bradford, VT, Jackeline Hubbard and husband Don of Lyman; 12 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel Catteral of Lisbon, and Velma Locke of Littleton; two brothers, Winfield Fenoff, Jr. of Lyman and Erwin Fenoff of Swiftwater, NH; nieces and nephews. She was born in Haverhill, NH, on November 17, 1935, a daughter of George Oliver and Phyllis Willey. A lifelong Upper Valley resident, she had formerly resided in Newbury, East Corinth, and Groton, VT. For 23 years, she worked at the former Wanda s Nursing Home in Bradford as a certified nursing assistant, and retired in 1991 from McFarland House in Barre, VT. In her quiet time, Marjorie enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing Scrabble and cards. She was predeceased by her husband Theodore I. Salomaa on September 6, 1997. He was a graduate of Lake Region High School in Orleans, VT and attended Vermont Technical College in Randolph, VT. He married Kathleen Wheeler on June 21, 1975. Together they owned and operated the former Hannah s Hallmark Store in Littleton, NH, and he was previously employed for 18 years with the Butson Family Supermarket chain based in Woodsville. David was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Woodsville. Music played a large role in David s life. He enjoyed listening to music and playing his guitar. David was a sports fan, especially of golf and football. He was known to be an avid fan of the New York Giants. David s spirited personality was represented in his sense of humor, and he took great pleasure spending time with his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Kathleen (Wheeler) Rives of North Haverhill, their children Samuel D. Rives and wife Leah of San Marcos, CA, Hannah R. Bingham and husband Daniel of Aurora, IL, and Josiah W. Eden was born in Whitefield, NH, on August 1, 1927, to Bliss E. and Zephrine (Landry) Aldrich. He attended UNH during his final two years of high school and attained his high school diploma and associates degree in agriculture through a special education program, during WWII. Eden married Paulina Polly Hanks on August 1, 1946. He served as a herdsman in the early 1950 s at the Billings Farm in Woodstock, VT, and lived for several years in the Woodstock area. He purchased his first farm in Sharon, VT, where he farmed for six years. Upon moving to Woodsville, he owned and operated the Wild Rivers Farm from 1958-1997. He was a member of the Riverside Grange, Dalton, NH and a producer member of AgriMark Dairy. He was predeceased by a son, William B. Aldrich on May 23, 1977, and his wife Polly Aldrich on June 5, 2002. He is survived by a brother, Lawrence Aldrich and wife Phyllis of Plainfield, NH; six sons, Everett R. Elaine was born in Bishopton, Quebec, on January 29, 1932, to Samuel and Julia (Tupper) Lancaster. Upon graduation from McDonald Teacher College in Montreal, she taught school in northern Quebec for two years. On August 2, 1952, she married Paul E. Bedell. Together they operated their dairy farm in Bath, NH, retiring in 1986. Elaine was active in all aspects of their farming from bookkeeping, to cleaning the milk house, as well as baling hay, and for a many of years served as the school bus driver for the Monroe Road in Bath. She was a member of the Monroe Methodist Church, the Farm Bureau, enjoyed bowling with the Woodsville Women s bowling league, and volunterring with the Hunt Mountain 4-H Club. Since retirement, she and her husband have enjoyed wintering in Lady Lake, FL. Elaine was predeceased by an infant daughter, Marie Bedell, in 1956, and a son, Paul Harland Bedell on November 9, 1971, a sister Lucy MacDonald, and three brothers Aleck, Russell, and Forrest Lancaster. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Paul E. Bedell of Monroe; two daughters, Robin Wahto and husband David of Anchorage, AK and Connie Jones and husband Merle of Monroe; 5 grandchildren, Michael Jones and wife Ashley, Susan Schofield and husband Brian, Debbie Jones, Jason Wahto and Rachel Wahto; a sister, Esther Gilbert of Bury, Quebec; a brother, William Lancaster of Columbus, NJ; a special niece and nephew, Irene Haskell of Barre, VT, and Dr. John MacDonald of Auburn, AL; and many other nieces and nephews. Bill was born in Little Falls, NY, on January 22, 1912, to William Frank and Anna (Cotton) Keyes, Sr. He was a graduate of the Haverhill Academy Class of 1929. He owned and operated the Ideal Welding Shop of Forest Street in Woodsville from 1946-1986, when he retired. Bill was a member of the First Congregational Church of Haverhill for over 80 years and served as a deacon, trustee, and moderator for the church. He was a former precinct commissioner and fire chief for Haverhill Corner and served on the Haverhill budget committee. He was a special deputy fire warden for 30 years. Bill was an original organizer of Twin State Fire Mutual Aid Association and an original organizer and member of the Connecticut Valley Snowmobile Club. He was married to Ione Beulah (Keith) who died on May 16, 1956; to Barbara (Quimby) Moody who died on June 1, 1980; and to Madeline (Millette) Bixby who died on April 24, 1989. He was also predeceased by a son Robert Keith Keyes on May 11, 1963; by his sisters Dorothy (Keyes) Blaisdell and Katherine (Keyes) Wills; and by his brother Luther C. Keyes. He is survived by his son Harvey W. After graduation from high school, Don served in the United States Army from 1966 until 1982 when they moved to Groton. He has been the Director of Food Services at Blue Mountain Union School for the past 20 years. Don married Kathleen Acri on July 17, 1976. Don was a member of the Groton United Methodist Church, was a former member of the Groton Fire Department, served as a Lister for the Town of Groton, and was a Justice of the Peace. A passionate outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing. Helen s early working years started off as a maid and Nanny for a doctor and school teacher. For over 30 years she was a head cook at the New Canaan, CT Country Day School. Helen has resided in Norwalk, CT, Bethel, CT, West Townsend, VT, and Haverhill, NH, and was active at the First Haverhill Congregational Church of Haverhill and with area sewing and quilting groups. She was known for her baked bread and gardens. Later, she moved to Pike, NH prior to entering the Grafton County Home in 2000. Helen was predeceased by two husbands, Louis Tingets and Clayton E. Bailwitz, as well as, her two children Louis J. Tingets on June 14, 1960, and Helen E. Waterbury on August 9, 1997. Predeceased siblings include Ebe, Goldie, Joe, John, Madeline, Steve, and Loue Kiba. Helen s surviving siblings include Mary Gillerlain of Virginia Beach, VA, Loius Kiba of Akron, OH, Irene Albin of Akron, OH and Pekoe Steve Kiba of South Carolina. Other survivors include two grandsons, Lance Waterbury, and Daniel Waterbury of Connecticut; a granddaughter Shawna Lee Waterbury - Kwashnak of Connecticut; two great granddaughters, Sarah and Anna Kwashnak; a great grandson, Thomas Kwashnak all of Connecticut; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
