....show , 74, of Piermont, NH, died on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at the home of her sister-in-law, Linda Goodrich, in Lyme, NH, surrounded by family and close friends. Born on September 25, 1933, in Woodsville, NH, she was the daughter of Leroy and Martha (Kimball) Nelson. She graduated from Woodsville High School and attended Lyndon Teacher s College. Martha Jane was married to Scott Sayers of South Ryegate, VT, on August 21, 1955, and had two children. Martha Jane was a mother, housewife, and worked side by side with her husband on their dairy farm in Piermont until they retired several years ago. She enjoyed being with her family and friends. Martha s favorite things to do were baking pies, making recyle crafts for gifts, gardening and playing cards. Martha was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Louise Elder and Della Heywood, and her brother Harland Nelson. Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Scott Sayers of Piermont, NH; one daughter, Cindy Watrous and her husband George of Orwell, VT; a son Larry Sayers of Bellows Falls, VT; and three grandchildren, Jacob Watrous and his wife Heather, and Lindsey and Megan Watrous. She is also survived by a sister, Priscilla Melahn and her husband Jack of Bradford, VT; as well as sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, great nieces and nephews, and close special friends David and Rachael Yaeger and their five children Karl, Christopher, Heidi, Veronica, and Gloria. A calling hour will be on Friday, May 2, from 6-7 PM at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 3, at 10 AM at the Piermont Congregational Church, Piermont, NH with Mr. Lyman Robie and Rev. Dr. Catherine Cook, officiating. ....show , 85, died on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at her residence. She was born in Haverhill, NH, December 24, 1922, the daughter of Oscar and Gladys (Demerritt) Stone. Bessie was a graduate of Haverhill Academy. She worked as an operating room technician at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, Hanover, NH for 17 years, retiring in 1985. She enjoyed her property, gardening and lawn care. She also volunteered at the Newbury Congregational Church. For several years she picked strawberries and blueberries at the Four Corners Farm in Newbury and provided the homemade donuts at Aldrich General Store, North Haverhill and Newbury General Store. Her family was important to her and she took great pride in being with them. She was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Rae Colbeth on August 24, 1993; a son, Fred J. Colbeth on December 2, 2001; and by two grandchildren. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Wilds of Newbury; two sons, Rod Colbeth and wife Maureen and Thomas Colbeth and wife Arie both of Newbury; a brother, Frank Stone of Barnet, VT; 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Danforth lived in Waltham, MA for many years and worked for Raytheon Corporation as a quality control inspector, before retiring to North Haverhill. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, crewel work and embroidery, and was a former member of the Deborah Rebekahs. She was predeceased by her husband, Elwood N. Danforth on November 24, 1988; by her siblings, Fred L. Gates, Vernon Gates, Viola Miller, Ernest Gates, Madeline Gates, Eleanor Upham, and Edith Magee. He was married to Lorraine A. Soles on December 24, 1952. Lee worked as an auto mechanic at Dud Chase s garage in Woodsville for many years, was a service station supervisor for Johnson Products for 20 years, and just prior to retiring, he worked at the Bradford Mini Mart. Over the years, he enjoyed going to yard sales equally as much as having them. He was predeceased by his wife Lorraine Buskey on January 11, 1996. He is survived by his son, Peter R. Buskey and wife Rebecca of New Hampton, NH; his daughter, Margaret J. Peggy O Donnell and husband Dana of Wells River, VT; six grandchildren, Melissa Buskey Reed, Ryan Scott O Donnell, Christopher Lee Buskey, Billie Jo Buskey Shinn, Daniel Paul Buskey, and Elisabeth Megan Buskey Tallman; 11 great grandchildren; three sisters, Pauline Murray of East Ryegate, VT, Lillian Gilman of Woodstock, NH, and Blanche Chapman of Middletown, CT; his companion of more than ten years, Shirley Emerson of Bradford; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. ....show , 75, of Newbury, passed away at home on May 6, 2008, with his wife and children at his bedside. Frank fought a courageous battle for years with cancer and many complications. He had been on dialysis for two years. Frank was born in Haverhill, MA, one of 14 children, to Carl and Alice (McNeil) Torrey. He attended school in Haverhill, MA, and was member of the Salvation Army. He married Lorraine G. (Peabody) Torrey on March 22, 1958. They recently celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. As a young man, he worked as a climber for various tree outfits including Ralston Tree and Bartlett Tree Company. He worked many years as a roofer for Letoile Roofing, Haverhill, MA. He also worked as a custodian a the Timberlane School District, Plaistow, NH and retired as a custodian in 1994 form the Ray School, Hanover, NH because of ill health. Frank enjoyed hunting and fishing, reading and just taking a ride. He taught his grandsons and sons how to shoot the bow and was so proud of his family. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Torrey of Newbury; eight children, Gary and (Laurie) of Silver Springs, FL, Carleton and wife Donna of North Haverhill, NH, Frank and wife Jackie of Salem, NH, Scott and wife Paula, Darryl and wife Tami, Lorna Renfrew and husband John all of Newbury, Sharon Davison and husband Jeff of Haverhill, MA, and Wanda Keaton Torrey of Auburn, NH; 18 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; his siblings, Gregory Torrey of Newbury, Doris Steven and Evelyn Allen both of Plaistow, Alice Wilkinson of Ware, MA, Ruth Cahill of Lowell, MA, Carlene Paquette of Newbury, and Marion Sargent of Dover, NH; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He joined the US Air Force and served in World War II. Following the war, he was employed as a telephone installer for New York Telephone. Mr. Bartkowski married Mary Pat Lockwood on August 16, 1947. Together, they moved from Port Washington to North Haverhill, NH, in 1983. He attended St. Joseph s Catholic Church, Woodsville, NH, and was a member of the National Rifle Association and the American Radio Relay League. He was predeceased by his siblings Mary Borkowski, Eleanor Halufska, and Frederick and John Bartkowski. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Pat Bartkowski, of North Haverhill, two sisters, Gladys Pryzewski of New Hyde Park, NY, and Helen Walsh of New Port Richey, FL, and his brother, Albert Bartkowski, also of New Port Richey; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins. ....show , 69, beloved husband, father and friend, formerly of Haverhill, and Salem, NH, passed away surrounded by his loving family on May 7, 2008 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH, following a tragic fall. Jim was born on July 25, 1938 in Nashua, NH, the son of Margaret Urie Brown and the late Philip N. Brown of Milford, NH. Dr. Brown was a graduate of Milford High School, the University of New Hampshire and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He served in the United States Navy prior to opening his dental practice in Salem, NH. After many years in Salem, he fell in love with the beautiful Upper Valley and re-established his dental practice in Haverhill, NH. He cherished the privilege of caring for many wonderful patients over the years, many of whom became dear friends. He had recently retired. He is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Beverly Curtis Brown and his admiring children; Scott, Craig and daughter in-law Rosemarie; Amy and son in-law Ken Kinder. Jim also was adored by his eight grandchildren; Dan, Michelle, Hannah, Ellie, Emily, Stephen, Maggie and Lily. He is also survived by his beloved mother Margaret, his brother David T. Brown and sister in-law Collette, and his sister Barbara and brother in-law David Downer, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Philip in 1978. Jim was active in his community and over the years served as a school board member, precinct commissioner, zoning board commissioner and water commissioner for the town of Haverhill. He was also active with the Girl s and Boy s Club and the Visiting Nurses Association of Salem, NH, and was a member of the American Dental Association. He was an avid sports fan and was particularly loyal to the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics. Along with sports, he loved to garden with Bev and together they enjoyed making their community more beautiful through landscaping and gardening. His most significant contribution was the legacy of love and care that he showed to his family. He was the most wonderful husband, father, brother, grandpa, uncle and friend. He is now our guardian angel and will be cherished and loved forever. Gladys moved to the United States in the winter of 1947, and later worked for Plymouth Stitching as a seamstress retiring n 1979. Mooselauke Chapter # 42 of Warren, the Warren United Methodist Women, Warren Historical Society, Pythian Sisters Minerva Temple of Warren, the Episcopal Church Women in Plymouth, and the Daughters of the British Empire in Massachusetts. She was married to Theodore E.K. Marston on October 20, 1945 in Orpington, England and he predeceased her on December 24, 1980. She was born in Barnard, VT on September 24, 1922, a daughter of William Waldo and Susan Alice (Pember) Rhoades. Margaret had lived in Tupper Lake, NY from 1949 until the spring of 2007 when she moved to North Haverhill. She was a member of Mt. Morris Whiteface Chapter # 106 Order of the Eastern Star, and was a longtime member and active participant in the United Community Church, both in Tupper Lake. Prior to retirement she was a nurses aide at Sunmount Developmental Center in Tupper Lake. She married Ernest H. Winot on March 17, 1940 in Bethel, VT and he predeceased her. She was also predeceased by a daughter Jennie Winot Brown and a granddaughter, Bobbi Jo. Survivors include two sons William Winot of Piermont, NH and Keith Winot of Coopersburg, PA, seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, one great great grandson, and a sister Beulah Klimasofski of Pasadena, CA. ....show , 88, of Ryegate, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 20, 2008, following a short period of declining health. She was born in Groton, VT on November 19, 1919, the daughter of Elwin and Ethel Fifield. She graduated from Groton High School in 1936, from Lyndon Normal School in 1939, and received her B.S. in Education from Lyndon State College in 1971. She married Harold Nelson on September 2, 1944 in Groton, and they lived on the family farm in Ryegate all their married life. Vera was a member of Ryegate Presbyterian Church, Blue Mountain Grange, Home Dem, and VT Retired Teachers Association. She taught for 23 years in various area elementary schools, retiring from Newbury Elementary after 17 years there. For twenty years Vera and Harold spent winters in Palmetto, FL where Vera captured numerous trophies for her shuffleboard prowess. She was an excellent cook, loved music and sports, but her greatest love in life was her family. She is survived by Harold, her loving husband of 63 years, four children and their spouses: Nancy and Gene Perkins of Ryegate, Bruce and Gail Nelson of Ryegate, Bob and Jodi Nelson of Lincoln, NH, and Ken and Bobbie Nelson of Ryegate; 9 grandchildren, Joe Perkins, Gordon and Jennifer Perkins, Curt and Emily Nelson, Andrea and Ryan Dennis, Jim and Christy Nelson, Tracy and Ryan Seaman, Jeremy and Natal Nelson, Marcy and David Singleton, and Katie and Graham VerLee; and 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Arthur F.G. Bouthillier; her daughter Rena L. Krissman on January 4, 2006; and a great grandson Michael Krissman on January 11, 1993. She was a 1946 graduate of Woodsville High School, Woodsville, NH. She married Dean G. Hammond on May 6, 1950. She worked as a secretary at New England Baptist Hospital, Boston, MA, and later at First National Warehouse in North Haverhill. Edie was a devoted member and past Worthy Matron of Iona Lafayette Chapter #39 Order of the Eastern Star of North Haverhill and Grand Adah of the Grand Chapter of New Hampshire Order of the Eastern Star, and Trustee of Grafton #46 Building Association. She was a member of the North Haverhill United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She worked at the North Haverhill Fair and organized the queen contest for several years. She enjoyed working outside in her flower gardens, raking, and shoveling snow. She was predeceased by her husband, Dean G. Hammond on December 14, 1992. She is survived by her two sons, Don J. Hammond and wife Patty and Alan D. Hammond, both of North Haverhill; a special niece, Shirley Slattery and husband Peter of Bath, NH, and several other nieces and nephews. Lillian Bell (Crawford) Wilkinson
....show was born in Boston, Massachusetts on February 21, 1916, the oldest of eight children to her parents Stanley G. Crawford and Lillian B. Crawford. The family made their home in Weymouth, MA. On August 11, 1936 she and Edward Joseph Wilkinson were married in New York City. After a short stay in New York the couple moved to NJ and in 1943 purchased a home in Millington where they lived for the next 57 years. Edward and Lillian had a total of four children including: Christine Wilkinson Meserve and husband Robert of Lyman, NH, Lillian Wilkinson Smith of Blairstown, NJ, Edward J. Wilkinson, Jr. and wife Shirley of Fairfield Glade, TN and Stanley Wilkinson of Fort Meyers, FL. She is also survived by 10 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren; and two brothers, Allen Crawford and wife Joan of Bellingham, MA and Larry Crawford and wife Wilma of Murfreesboro, TN. She is predeceased by her husband Edward J. Wilkinson on March 31, 1998, other deceased family members include, David Crawford, Stanley Crawford, Beatrice Slocumb, Nancy Longest and Estella Curtis. In Millington the family lived close to the Passaic River. It was a great place for outdoor activities such as swimming in the summer and skating in the winter. Her husband Edward loved the outdoors and Lillian loved knitting, sewing and making crafts of all types. She also enjoyed picnicking and visiting auctions. Over the years she amassed quite a collection of carnival glass. The family belonged to the First Presbyterian Church of Stirling, New Jersey. Lillian was an active member, quickly becoming one of its Sunday school teachers. It must have been enjoyable, as the job lasted for some 35 years. When her sons were old enough for scouting Lillian found her true calling. In 1949 she became a den mother when the boys joined the cub scouts. She soon graduated to Den Leader Coach of pack 56 in Millington, a post she held for over 20 years. During that time she organized and ran sessions of den mother training, Pow Wow and Round table . She also worked on numerous committees and fund drives. In 1972 she received the coveted Silver Fawn Award . This award recognizes women for service to the local Council s Cub Scouting program and was equivalent to the Silver Beaver award for men. Eventually she joined the staff in the Boy Scout Office in Plainfield, NJ as an office assistant and worked in that capacity until she was almost 70. In her words If it was Scouting I did it . She is still a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America. After her husband Edward passed away in 1998 she lived alone in Millington for a short time. Then in failing health moved to Littleton, NH to live with her granddaughter, Lynn Davis. Further deterioration in her health necessitated another move to the Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill, NH, where she died on June 4, 2008. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be on Aug. 8th, at 11 AM at the Shared Ministry,(white church), Main Street Lisbon, NH, with Rev. Lyn Winter officiating. He served in the US Army from January 1951 through December 1952. He worked for the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture for 22 years, retiring in 1986. Following his retirement from the State, he moved to upstate New York, where he worked at Pinebush High School and he retired from there in August 1994. Carmine was predeceased by a grandson, Reuben Filides. He was born in Haverhill, NH, October 8, 1932, the son of Leslie George and Alice May (Church) Kimball, Sr. He was a 1950 graduate of Haverhill Academy and 1954 graduate of the University of New Hampshire. Les entered the U.S. Army on October 23, 1954 and served in Germany until his discharge on October 2, 1956 as a First Lieutenant. For 33 years he worked for Travelers Insurance in Hartford, CT as a manager in the claims division. Following his retirement he returned to North Haverhill. He was a member of Grafton-Kane Lodge # 46 F&AM of North Haverhill, and Ross-Wood American Legion Post # 20 of Woodsville. Les was predeceased by his parents, two aunts Hazel Bartlett and Frances Bartlett, and one uncle Maurice Kimball. Survivors include one uncle Howard Kimball of California, along with several cousins. Marion was born in Jersey City, NJ, on January 12, 1912, to Adam J. and Bessie (Trenery) Ruby. She was a graduate of Cliffside Park High School in New Jersey, and later attended secretarial college. She married Kenneth R. Hunter on October 22, 1938 who predeceased her on June 30, 1981. While raising her family, she was employed as a secretary and taught Sunday school. Marion and Ken moved to Newbury, VT, in 1976. In 1979 they returned to New Jersey before eventually settling in Monroe in 1981. Marion was a member and treasurer of the Monroe United Methodist Church and a former member of the First Congregational Church of Newbury. She was a longtime volunteer at the Grafton County Nursing Home where in 2005 she received a Special Achievement Award for 18 years of service. She was a past associate of the Grafton County Home Association, volunteered with the RSVP program and was an active member of the Cottage Hospital Auxiliary. She was a co-founder of the Bone Building Group of Monroe and served as a leader at its weekly exercise sessions. Marion is survived by two sons, Kenneth A. Hunter and wife Barbara of New Durham, NH and Wayne D. Hunter and wife Jeanette of West Berlin, VT; two granddaughters, Nancy Hunter Rogers and husband Gary and their son, seven week old Henry Hunter Rogers of Jericho, VT and Jennifer Hunter of Charlotte, NC.
