Born to Howard and Ruth (Houghton) Johnson, in Woodsville, N.H., on June 11, 1929, and raised on Fairview Farm near East Lyndon, Bill - as he was known to all - lived his whole life shaped by the New England virtue of humility that often underplayed his many accomplishments. A combat infantryman during the Korean Conflict, he was awarded the Bronze Star for valor. Bill was valedictorian of his class at the Lyndon Institute in 1947, earned his BS degree at the University of Vermont in 1951 and his masters degree at the University of California at Berkeley in 1956. He was a loving husband to, and gracious caretaker of, Barbara, until her death in 2005; and adored father, cherished uncle, revered grandfather and faithful friend.
