, or Mae as her family and many friends knew her, died peacefully at her home on Maple Street in Lyndonville on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008. Though she became very ill and weak in January, in August, when she celebrated her 100th birthday, she had a wonderful time visiting with family and friends from her New York days and from her time in Vermont. Mae was the daughter of Isadore and Yetta Hershenson. She grew up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, then moved further north, and finally the family moved to Brooklyn. Her father, who helped start the Hebrew Free Loan Society, owned a garage and before that a laundry. Mae used to talk about how some of the shirt collars he cleaned had grease paint on them because he had customers who acted in the Yiddish theater which thrived in New York at the time. After Mae graduated from Girl's High she attended a training school and became a legal secretary. In 1934 she married Samuel Zisowitz, a friend from high school days. Later, in the 1950s they changed their name to Martin, a rough translation of her father-in-law's Hungarian first name. In the early years of their marriage Sam and Mae traveled across the U.S. and one summer took a freighter to Rio. Then in 1938 Sam took a sabbatical from teaching and they traveled by boat around the world visiting places like Java, Cambodia, Siam, as it was then called, Eygpt, and then they passed through the Suez Canal and toured France and England. Second only to her family, this trip was the high point of her life, and her home is still decorated with carving and paintings from Bali. After that she and Sam settled in Queens, N.Y. and raised two sons, Ben, born in 1941 and David, born in '44. When her children were young she remained home. But in the late 1950s she began working again, this time as a secretary in the boys dean's office at Franklin K. Lane H.S. in Brooklyn. As is often the case, though her title was secretary, she, in fact, did a lot more. She always saw herself as an advocate for the students who were sent to the dean. They too were her children. During this time she was also active in the National Council of Jewish Women. After retiring, Sam and Mae finally left the city and moved to Bethpage on Long Island where Mae began to garden. She particularly liked planting small evergreens she brought home from her visits to Vermont which then became not so small, as Sam noted whenever he mowed the lawn. But in 1988, to be closer to family, she and Sam moved to Lyndonville, and in 1990 moved into the Maple Street home they shared with her son, David his wife, Penny, and their daughter, Lizzie. Sam died in 1991. He always missed New York, but moving to a small Vermont town was just right for Mae. She soon became well known around town, now as Martha, and especially enjoyed the times she spent working as a volunteer with the book repair group at the Cobleigh Library where new friendships blossomed. Mae was a woman with many talents. She was an artist with a special gift for creating wonderful things for her home out of anything she laid her hands upon. Then in her 90s she began writing poetry. A collection of her poems was printed to celebrate her 100th birthday and is available at the Cobleigh Library. She also had a particular gift for drawing people out, so that at parties and family gatherings people often found themselves telling Mae all kinds of interesting things. Mae saw a lot pass by during her life. The world moved from steamships to cyberspace. She enjoyed the old ways but welcomed the new also. And to the end, she never forgot the stories of her early life or lost her sharp, wry sense of humor. Perhaps her only lingering regrets were that she never lived long enough to see the world come to its senses and to see George W. Bush leave the White House. Mae was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband, Sam, her sister, Inez Bock and her husband Sidney, and as happens if you live to 100, all her old friends and relatives. She is survived by her son, Ben, and his wife, Leslie, of Los Angeles, and their daughters, Vanessa Martin of Jerusalem and Abby Martin Stein and her husband, Jason of Los Angeles. Also by her son, David, and his wife, Penny Patch of Lyndonville, and their son, Seth Williams, his wife, Abby Reese, and their daughter, Luna, of Lyndonville, and their daughter, Lizzie Patch Martin, her husband, Gareth Porter and their son, Winslow. Also by her nieces, Constance Wool, Carol Zisowitz, Terry Zisowitz, and her sister-in-law, Gertrude Gordon. There will be a memorial and celebration of Mae's life at her home in Lyndonville at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 1. In the summer her ashes will be placed with Sam's on family land in Lost Nation, East Haven. In lieu of flowers please make donations in her name to either the Cobleigh Library or Caledonia Home Health.
