, 58, of Harley View Drive, Monroe, N.H., died on Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, N.H. He was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., on Nov. 1, 1949, the son of Harland E. and Doris I. (Hunt) Bedell. Tom was a graduate of McIndoe Falls Academy in 1968 and he received his Associate's Degree in Animal Husbandry from the Thompson School at the University of New Hampshire in 1970. He married Marilyn (Mitchell) Smotrycz Bedell on June 1, 1985. Tom was employed as a maintainer II for the New Hampshire Department of Transportation for 26 years. More recently, he worked at the I-93 Welcome Center for the State of New Hampshire in Littleton for four years. Tom served as a selectman for the town of Monroe for five years and also served on various zoning boards and committees for over 15 years. Tom was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church, was Vice President of the McIndoe Falls Academy Alumni Association and of the Monroe Men's Club, a longtime member of the Monroe Grange, and was member of the NH-SEA. He enjoyed helping area farmers with milking, haying and other farm chores. During maple sugar season, he helped at Minot's sugarhouse in Bath, N.H. He loved to travel. He was predeceased by his father, Harland Bedell on May 19, 1991. Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Marilyn Bedell of Monroe; his mother Doris I. Bedell of Monroe; a daughter, Suzi Guilford and husband Tod of Canaan, N.H.; a son, Daniel Smotrycz of Boston, Mass.; a brother Gerald W. Bedell and wife Nancy of Monroe; several nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. Calling hours will be Sunday, May 4, 2008, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, N.H. A funeral service will be on Monday, May 5, at 1 p.m. at the Monroe United Methodist Church in Monroe with Rev. Donald Thomas, officiating. Burial will be in the Monroe Village Cemetery following the service. , 73, of Lyndon, formerly of Hardwick and Morrisville, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at the Country Village Center in Lancaster, N.H. She was born Nov. 14, 1934, in Lyndon, the daughter of the late Myron C. and Ona (Smith) Dresser. She graduated from Hardwick Academy. Following her graduation she and her family traveled throughout the United States. She was first employed as a secretary for Ralston Purina in St. Johnsbury. She later worked in the Hardwick school system, retiring in the early 1970s. On April 21, 1956, she married Herbert Byron "Bud" Preman in Hardwick, where she made her home for more than 43 years. She later lived in Morrisville for seven years before moving to Lyndon in 2007. Pat was a member of the women's fellowship circle number eight of the United Church in Hardwick; The New England Fiddlers Association; the American Legion Auxiliary Post number 33 and the V.F.W. Post 9653, both in Morrisville. She spent many hours raising funds for Special Olympics and the Vermont Wheelchair Olympics. Other enjoyments include: bingo, cards and gardening. Survivors include four sons: Brian Preman and his wife, Ann, of Perry, Fla., Robert Preman and his wife, Averill, of Fort Myers, Fla., Patrick Preman and his wife, Margie, of South Woodbury, and Marc Preman of St. Johnsbury; two daughters: Andrea Taylor and her husband, Steve, of St. Johnsbury, and Jo-Ann Brochu and her husband, Larry, of Hardwick; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth Dresser of Newport, N.H.; a sister, Beverly Westover of Bartow, Fla.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert, in 1984 and a daughter Nannette Preman in 1983. All Services will be private at the convenience of the family. , of Lyndon, died unexpectedly at her home Wednesday morning April 30, 2008, at the age of 87. She was born Sept. 28, 1920, in Los Angeles, Calif., one of two daughters born to Albert and Marian (Lambert) DesMarchais. In April 1942 she married Michael Petrow. They raised their family in East Hampton, Conn., and moved to Vermont in 1987. Pat had been an active member of the St. Johnsbury Lions club for many years. She was an avid knitter whose skill was appreciated by many friends and family members. Working in her flower gardens brought her much pleasure, and she is remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Survivors include three sons and their wives, Michael and Trudy Petrow of Lakeland, Fla.; Albert and Connie Petrow of Colchester, Conn.; and Robbie and Phronsie Petrow also of Colchester, Conn.; her daughter, Laurie Willey and her husband Larry of Lyndon; eight grandchildren, Stacey, Tricia, Desiree, Chad, Brett, Krystina, Jamie, and Zack; 10 great grandchildren; and her loyal and loving companion, Mee-Too. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Michael Petrow in 2003; and her sister, Ernestine Hurley. Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. , age 92, a longtime Littleton, N.H. resident, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Born June 2, 1915, in Bethlehem, N.H., she is the daughter of Myron L. and F. Florence (Griffin) Jackson. She married Charles H. Whittier, Jan. 25, 1937, in Bethlehem, N.H. He predeceased her July 8, 1992. Olive was a member of the Methodist Church. She enjoyed the out of doors, flowers and nature. She worked for a time as a telephone operator, at Kelley's Nursery, and at the family's Antique Shop with her husband when he was not busy with his responsibilities as a State Senator and Congressman. Olive is survived by her two sons, Roger Whittier of North Port, Fla., and Chuck and his wife Cathy Whittier of Orland Park, Ill.; son-in-law, Julien Fournier of Littleton; nine grandchildren, Vicki, Jeff, Greg, Valerie, Phillip, Jeanette, Elizabeth, Edward, Maureen; and several great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Irene Fournier; one brother; and three sisters. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 6, 11 a.m. at the Maple Street Cemetery in Bethlehem with the Rev. Steven Bascom, officiating.

, 79, of Pleasant Street, in St. Johnsbury, passed away Thursday evening, May 1, 2008 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center after a period of declining health. She was born in St. Johnsbury on May 30, 1928, the daughter of John and Alice (Holbrook) Nolan. Her husband, "Scampy" Daniel Linehan, predeceased her Aug. 24, 1998. After graduating from St. Johnsbury Academy, Mary's first job was at the Fairbanks Morse office where she and Scampy met. They were married in 1947. She later worked at Hovey's Thrifty Shop. Mary loved being a wife and mother. She and Scampy spent several happy winters in Bushnell, Fla. She was especially proud of her paintings done in her younger years. Recently, she knew her health was declining, and she made sure she called all her friends whose friendships she cherished. She was always very supportive of her children in whatever they pursued throughout their lives. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Burrington and her husband Randy, of Danville; her son, Howard Linehan, of St. Johnsbury; her twin sisters, Patricia Freehart and her husband "Pin," of Orleans, and Gloria Charron, of Lyndonville; and all her nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 5, at 1 p.m., at the Sayles Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert H. Sargent will officiate. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from noon to the start of the service. H. Jane (Evans) Whitney

of Lisbon, N.H., and author of "Jane's Grammar Guide," died at age 90 on May 1, 2008, at Cottage Hospital. Mrs. Phil Whitney was known as Mrs. Jane Evans to the thousands of children whose grammar she painstakingly sought to improve and whose vocabulary she rigorously endeavored to expand throughout 41 years of teaching. After having taught music for two years at Dow Academy in Franconia, she taught for 30 years at Lisbon School (in the World War II-era annex known as "the chicken coop"). "Hawk-eye Evans," as she was affectionately known due to her pupil's belief that she had eyes in the back of her head, was the proud mother of Gail Evans (who died in Australia after having taught special education there for 20 years) and Audrey Di Maria (an art therapist in Washington, D.C.) who is married to Ken Nankervis (of Melbourne, Australia). When not teaching, Mrs. Whitney spent her life in service to her church and her community, founding and directing the choir at the Congregational Church in Lisbon, playing the organ at the Church of the Epiphany in Lisbon, teaching inmates at the Grafton County Jail to read, playing her violin for residents of nursing homes (as part of the Rubemas musical group), and, with her husband Phil, making dolls and doll beds for children in need. Days before her death, she was knitting hats and scarves for the homeless of Washington, D.C., something she had done for 25 years. Mrs. Whitney had been a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society of Teachers, the North Country Chorus, the Eastern Star, and the Lisbon Prayer Group, and a Daughter of the American Revolution. Born in Keene, N.H., to William Wallace and Mabel (Vaughan) Jeffery, Mrs. Whitney graduated from Keene Normal School before teaching in Marlowe, N.H., for four years and in Portsmouth, R.I., for six years. She is predeceased by her daughters' father, Retired Major Harold A. Evans, her husband Mr. Phil Whitney of Stephens City, Va., and her brother James Berkley Jeffery (whose wife Joan lives in Concord). Surviving siblings include Mrs. A. Paul (Barbara) Stimson of Bath, N.H., William Wallace Jeffery Jr. (and his wife Dorothea) of Nashua, N.H., and Kenneth Edwin Jeffery (and his wife Geraldine) of Nelson, N.H. Besides a number of nieces and nephews throughout the States and cousins in New Brunswick, Canada, Mrs. Whitney has three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren in Australia. A funeral service will be held Sunday, May 11, at 2 p.m. at the Church of the Epiphany, School Street, Lisbon, followed by a reception at Whitemount Farm in Bath. , 73, of Waits River Road, Bradford, Vt., died on May 3, 2008, at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, N.H. Lee was born on Nov. 16, 1934, in Westmore, Vt., to Ora P. and Annie (Butler) Buskey. He was married to Lorraine A. Soles on Dec. 24, 1952. Lee worked as an auto mechanic at Dud Chase's Garage in Woodsville for many years, was a service station supervisor for Johnson Products for 20 years, and just prior to retiring, he worked at the Bradford Mini Mart. Over the years, he enjoyed going to yard sales equally as much as having them. He was predeceased by his wife Lorraine Buskey on Jan. 11, 1996. He is survived by his son, Peter R. Buskey and wife Rebecca of New Hampton, N.H.; his daughter, Margaret J. "Peggy" O'Donnell and husband Dana of Wells River, Vt.; six grandchildren, Melissa Buskey Reed, Ryan Scott O'Donnell, Christopher Lee Buskey, Billie Jo Buskey Shinn, Daniel Paul Buskey, and Elisabeth Megan Buskey Tallman; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Pauline Murray of East Ryegate, Vt., Lillian Gilman of Woodstock, N.H., and Blanche Chapman of Middletown, Conn.; his companion of more than 10 years, Shirley Emerson of Bradford; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. , 63, of North Concord and St. Johnsbury, passed away Sunday morning, May 4, 2008. She enjoyed her last months as part of Marcelle and Raoul Houde's home on Concord Avenue in St. Johnsbury. She was the daughter of Frederick and Yvonne (Racine) Prue; they have both predeceased her as well as her three siblings Margaret, Madeline and Richard. As her own family left the household, Joyce and her husband Michael began taking in foster children. The more chaotic her household, the better she liked it! She had a love of animals, crocheting and shopping. She is survived by three children Teresa Lafferty of Colorado, Susan Patoine of Hinsdale, N.H., Bernard Hagan and wife Sandra of North Concord; eight grandchildren: Philip, Amber, Dustin and Rodney, Cory, Ashley, BJ and Katrina; one great-grandson; nieces and nephews. A gathering of friends and family will be held at the Sayles Funeral Home this Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Casual dress would be appreciated. , 97, of Concord, Vt., died Sunday morning, May 4, 2008, at St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. Edith was born in Derby on Feb. 10, 1911, the daughter of Simon Charles and Inez (Brown) Shastany. Upon the death of her mother on April 26, 1911, she lived with her "parents," Eugene and Emma Shastany of East St. Johnsbury where she attended East Village School and then St. Johnsbury Academy. On April 22, 1929, she married Floyd Easter and they resided in St. Johnsbury. Edith was a devoted mother to her children and loved to tell tales of their childhood adventures. She and Floyd were very involved in horse shows and races and spent many weekends showing their horses. Edith worked at the Green Mountain Market and Shop and Save for many years. She was a member of the V.F.W., and she also belonged to the Ladies of the Moose. Edith particularly enjoyed old cars and was a member of the Caledonia Classic Car Club. She loved cruising in her '72 Plymouth Duster. For the past several summers she could be seen driving all around town in her red Dodge convertible. Everyone in her family and large circle of friends will greatly miss her and remember her "spunkiness" and determination. Edith was predeceased by her husband, Floyd, and sons James and Paul and her grandson Jeffrey. She leaves behind her children Eugene Easter and his wife Brenda of Winter Haven, Fla., Lionel (Skip) Easter and his wife Carol of Victory, Rodney Easter and his wife Jean of East Haven, Donald Easter and his wife Bonnie of Barnet, Roxann Stacy (Easter) and her husband A.J. of Sherrills Ford, N.C., Doug Easter and his partner Hilde Sparrow of East Burke, and Robert Desilet and his partner Rita Bourcier of East Hartford, Conn. She also leaves behind grandchildren Richard, Deborah, Steven, James, Cathy, Shelly, Duane, Lynn, Roddy, Dale, Paul Jr., Carol, Susan, Lori, Adam, Sarah, Joshua, Kenny, Dennis and Joey and her great-grandchildren. , age 68, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, at the Littleton Regional Hospital after a long illness. Stanley was born on Aug. 30, 1939, a son to Howard S. and Alice (Blodgett) Bronson in Littleton, N.H. He attended schools in the New Hampshire towns of Lisbon and Landaff. Stanley was a self-employed carpenter and he enjoyed making wooden toys and furniture in his spare time. He loved to work on genealogy, read, and cut Christmas trees with his grandchildren. His favorite spot was the Buckwheat Piece, which he meticulously cared for. Stanley was a loving father, grandfather, and husband. Surviving family members include his wife, Louise Bronson of Lisbon; three daughters, Karen J. Bronson of Landaff, Kathi J. Melcher of Weare, N.H., and Kori J. Larrabee of Lisbon; two sons, Richard Bronson of Landaff, and Bradley Bronson of Lisbon; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, one brother, and one sister. She was born in New York City, May 21, 1927, the daughter of the late Paul F. and Mary (Gibbons) Reilly. She received her degree in education from St. Elizabeth's College in New Jersey. Rosemary married Vincent P. Lewando in 1951. Survivors include three sons, Paul Lewando of Okemos, Mich., Thomas Lewando and his wife, Carol, of Anchorage, Ala., John Lewando and his wife, Jessica Sloane, of Tacoma Park, Md.; three daughters, Ann Sullivan and her husband, Tom, of Princeton, Mass., Rosemary Lewando and her husband, Richard Struthers, of Putney, and Roberta Gillott and her husband, John, of Waterford; and 11 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband in 1997 and a brother Robert Reilly. A funeral mass will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 10, at the St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in East Albany with the Rev. Daniel Rupp officiating. There will be no calling hours. Interment will follow in the Chamberlin Hill Cemetery in Albany. Friends and family are invited to gather at Rosemary's home following the interment.

of Carver, Mass., and St. Johnsbury, died on May 3, 2008. He was 72 years old. Alberghini was born, raised, and educated in Plymouth, Mass., and is a graduate of Plymouth High School's class of 1953. He went on to attend the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, and has been a lifelong cranberry grower. Alberghini worked at the University of Massachusetts Cranberry Experiment Station in Wareham for 23 years. He owned and operated his own cranberry bogs in Carver, and Plymouth. He was a member of Ocean Spray as well as the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers Association, and was the founder and owner of R.A.S.P., Inc. in Carver. He was also a member of the Carver conservation committee and the Upland Sportsman Club in Plympton. He enjoyed skiing, snowmobiling, traveling, camping, and tending to his Draft horses. Alberghini is the beloved husband of Carmen Alberghini; loving father of Christopher Alberghini of California; son of Lavina Alberghini of Plymouth, and the late Alden Alberghini; brother of Ann Govoni of Kingston. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours were held on Wednesday at the Shepherd Funeral Home, 116 Main Street (Route 58), Carver. A funeral service was held Thursday, May 8, at the Shepherd Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Burial is at the Central Cemetery in Carver. , 47, of Shattuck Hill, Newport, a well-known business woman, passed away May 9, 2008, at the Vermont Respite House in Williston, Vt., surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 23, 1961, in Newport a daughter of Henry and Quedabond (Conard) Chilafoux. She graduated from Lake Region Union High School in 1979 and the Vermont College of Cosmetology in 1980. On June 28, 1980, she married Raymond Menard who survives her. Chris was a self-employed beautician and she owned and operated Re-Creations by Chris and Company on the Derby Road for 21 years. She was a member of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport. She volunteered at the Elk's Club with her husband Raymond and she was a member of the American Cancer Society for the Look Good Feel Better program and she also contributed to their Locks of Love program. Among her hobbies she enjoyed gardening, and spending time with her family, friends, and her loving clients. Chris was very community oriented and a great public servant. She is survived by her husband Raymond Menard of Newport, two daughters: Chauntelle Powers and her husband Danial of Derby and Krystle Menard of Derby and by one granddaughter Faith Powers. She is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Starlyn Chilafoux and his wife Ila, Rance Chilafoux, and Keeno Chilafoux and his wife Jeanette all of Irasburg, Sharon Nevin and her husband Don of Bend, Ore., and Fawnda Buttolph and her husband Martin of East Middlebury. Several nieces and nephews survive her. She is survived by her mother-in-law Simone Menard of Newport Center and the Menard family all of Barton. Chris was predeceased by a sister Gordena Buck and by two brothers: Dennis Chilafoux and Cornel Chilafoux. , age 67, of Bethlehem, N.H., passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2008, at home, after a long illness. Gene was born Oct. 24, 1940, in Lancaster, N.H., a son of the late Zephirin and Alma (Douillard) Pelletier. When he was still a young child, the family bought a farm in West Burke, Vt., where he grew up with six brothers and three sisters. Gene married Jean (Douglas) in 1963 and moved to Littleton, N.H. In 1967 he built a home in Bethlehem were he continued to reside until his death. Gene was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved the outdoors. In his lifetime, he was a carpenter, construction worker, bridge builder, woodsman, mechanic, repaired small engines, and his most recent job before retirement, was with Arrow Equipment, mainly working with waste oil furnaces. He leaves many friends and family members too numerous to mention. He was predeceased by his father, Zephirin, in 1979 and his mother, Alma, in 1989. , 66, of Lunenburg, Vt., died peacefully May 7, 2008, at The Pines Nursing Home in Lyndonville. He was born on March 17, 1942, in Lunenburg a son of Harold and Lenora (Hamilton) Hastings. On May 19, 1961, he married Betty Whiting who survives him. Mr. Hastings and his wife and their children farmed on the family farm in Freetown, N.Y., for many years. He is survived by his wife Betty Hasting of Lunenburg, Vt.; his children: Edward Hastings of Lyndonville, Vt.; Lynn Osgood of Newport, N.H.; Darlene Ayotte of Newport, N.H.; Jeanne Bailey of Burlington, Vt.; and Jeanine Hoyenski of Burlington; and by the following brothers and sisters: Flora Mae Pond and her husband John of Lafayette, N.Y.; Elaine Shaw and her husband Loren of Newport, Vt.; Wayne Hastings and his wife Randy of Chichester, N.H.; and Douglas Hastings and his wife Kathy of Jamesville, N.Y.; and by many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. , 64, of Wheelock, Vt., died Thursday evening May 8, 2008, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after struggling valiantly with congestive heart failure. He was born May 12, 1943, in New Rochelle, N.Y., a son of Harry and Helen (Benoit) Rhodes Jr. A graduate of Hoosac School in Hoosick, N.Y., Zack then received his B.A. in Political Science from Drew University in Madison, N.J., and his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Golden Gate University in San Francisco, Calif. Zack led an adventurous life with many careers including planting trees in the northwest, cooking in Hawaii, performing as a one-man traveling band throughout the U.S. and Canada, drywall taping in San Francisco, and finally settling in Wheelock, where he practiced law in St. Johnsbury and Wheelock. After retiring he enjoyed teaching literature, history, and current events at the Community High School of Vermont. He particularly enjoyed summers at Maidstone Lake with special friends, Val and Ted Scott, Susan Yerburgh, and Stephen Mather-Lees. His wit, sense of humor, guitar melodies, political banter, sports' expertise, and warmth will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. Survivors include his loving wife Linda of Wheelock; seven children, Hugh Yerburgh of San Francisco, Calif., Dawn Maine and husband Nels of Holly Springs, N.C., Vanessa Yerburgh of Caldwell, N.J., Evan Yerburgh of Kyeonggi-do, Korea, Roger Yerburgh and wife Zornitsa of Brooklyn, N.Y., Marjorie Blake and husband Scott of St. Johnsbury, and Virginia Rhodes of Wheelock; three grandchildren, Ashley, Kaitlyn, and Iona. , DMD, 69, of Barnet, Vt., beloved husband, father and friend, formerly of Haverhill and Salem, N.H., passed away surrounded by his loving family on May 7, 2008, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, N.H., following a tragic fall. Jim was born on July 25, 1938, in Nashua, N.H., the son of Margaret Urie Brown and the late Philip N. Brown of Milford, N.H. Dr. Brown was a graduate of Milford High School, the University of New Hampshire and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He served in the United States Navy prior to opening his dental practice in Salem, N.H. After many years in Salem, he fell in love with the beautiful Upper Valley and re-established his dental practice in Haverhill, N.H. He cherished the privilege of caring for many wonderful patients over the years, many of whom became dear friends. He had recently retired. He is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Beverly Curtis Brown and his admiring children; Scott, Craig and daughter in-law Rosemarie; Amy and son in-law Ken Kinder. Jim also was adored by his eight grandchildren: Dan, Michelle, Hannah, Ellie, Emily, Stephen, Maggie and Lily. He is also survived by his beloved mother Margaret, his brother David T. Brown and sister in-law Collette, and his sister Barbara and brother in-law David Downer, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Philip in 1978. Jim was active in his community and over the years served as a school board member, precinct commissioner, zoning board commissioner and water commissioner for the town of Haverhill. He was also active with the Girl's and Boy's Club and the Visiting Nurses Association of Salem, N.H., and was a member of the American Dental Association. He was an avid sports fan and was particularly loyal to the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics. Along with sports, he loved to garden with Bev and together they enjoyed making their community more beautiful through landscaping and gardening. His most significant contribution was the legacy of love and care that he showed to his family. He was the most wonderful husband, father, brother, grandpa, uncle and friend. He is now our guardian angel and will be cherished and loved forever. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, at 11 a.m. in the First Congregational Church of Haverhill, 122 School St., Haverhill, N.H. , age 91, of Littleton, N.H., passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in White River Junction, Vt. He lived most of his life in Lyman, N.H. Arkade was born on Jan. 26, 1917, a son to Prope and Martha (Soloway) Dusik in Berlin, N.H. His family relocated to Lyman where he attended public school. Arkade was a police officer for the Town of Lyman, and a musician in a local band (The Dusik Mountaineers) with his two brothers. He then served in the U.S. Army in World War II at Rome Arno from January 1942 until being honorably discharged in December 1945. He was awarded the European African Middle East Camp Ribbon, the American T Camp Ribbon, a Good Conduct Medal and a Victory Medal. Arkade held several public positions including selectman and New Hampshire State Representative for the Town of Lyman. In addition to his strong interest in politics, Arkade will be fondly remembered as an outdoorsman. He enjoyed gardening, reading and playing music on his accordion and harmonica. He was also known for his fantastic sense of humor and was quite a comedian. He was a member of the American Legion, and the Veterans Association. His family remembers Arkade as generous, kind hearted and an inspiration. He lived his life with integrity and bravery. Surviving family members include his 10 children: Mary Shevchenko of Marlborough, Conn., Donna Smith of Littleton, Arkade P. Dusik of Puyallup, Wash., Frederick J. Dusik of Lyman, Timothy J. Dusik of Littleton, Steven M. Dusik of Bristol, N.H., Pauline Patten of Lisbon, N.H., Suzanne Merrill of Littleton, Victoria Champagne of Granby, Conn., John H. Dusik of South Windsor, Conn.; 23 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, one sister and one son. Dale worked as a meat cutter for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, horse racing, horse pulling, doing puzzles, and was an avid recycler, working every Saturday at the Lyndonville Recycling Center. He was involved with the Caledonia County Fair, and was a faithful member of the Sutton Grange and the Northeast Coon and Cat Club. Dale is survived by Jeannette, his loving wife of nearly 52 years; four children: Clint and Mary Gray of Sutton, Beth and Bob Townsend of Lyndonville, Constance Charron of East Burke, Susan and Randy Friend of Sutton; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Ruberta King of Lyndon, Norma Stevens of Oakland, Ala., Alfreda Bumps of West Haven, Conn.; sister-in-law Clara Gray of Lyndon; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Judith Damon, brothers Fred Gray and Wayne Gray, and two infant siblings. David is survived by Janice, his wife of 54 years, their four children, Megan, John, Joel and Mary; and four grandchildren, Zachary, Katherine, Marissa and Joaquin. He is also survived by his son-in-law John Haygood and daughters-in-law Barbara Currier and Liliana Cubero. David was an active supporter of his community. He served as chairman on the board of selectmen for Danville, was a lifelong member of the Danville Congregational Church where he served as trustee for many years. David was also a member of The Order of The Eastern Star and Farm Bureau. A service will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Danville Congregational Church on Hill Street. , Dies Suddenly at Littleton Regional Hospital. Ardelle B. Hartford, 89, Cottage Street, Littleton, N.H., died suddenly May 17, 2008, at the Littleton Regional Hospital. She was born in Alberta, Canada, the daughter of Charles and Sarah (Lemna) Baldic. She graduated from Framingham Teachers College and taught in Hollis, Mass. She also attended the New England Conservatory, Boston, Mass. She and her husband lived in Lancaster, N.H., prior to moving to Littleton over 60 years ago. She was a substitute teacher in Whitefield and Littleton school systems for many years. She was involved in the 4H Club for 40 years. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church, Littleton. She enjoyed local sports as well as watching them on TV. She loved to sew, and was the "best cook in the world." Her greatest love in life was her family who she was very proud of and spoke of whenever anybody would visit with her. She was predeceased by her husband Robert in 1986. On May 18, 1942, she married Frank Chilafoe and has resided in the Groveton, N.H., and Lancaster area all of her life. Cynthia was an avid bowler, bingo player and loved her family. She leaves behind two daughters, Eunice Levesque and husband Paul of Groveton, and Bonnie Drew of Lancaster; two sons, Paul Chilafoe of Littleton, N.H.; and Thomas Chilafoe and wife Sherry, also of Littleton; a sister Daphne Pinkham and husband George, of Whitefield, N.H.; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was born in Marlborough, Mass., on Aug. 13, 1919, the daughter of Orlando and Lillian (Hoffman) Hills. During WWII she was an airplane mechanic as a Wave in Corpus Cristi, Texas. In 1951 she married William Hadley. They bought a farm in Lisbon in 1954. There she was a member of the Grange, The United Methodist Women, the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic, and the Shared Ministry. She was an avid reader who enjoyed knitting, sewing, gardening and cooking. Surviving family members include a sister, Sylvia Thompson of Nashua, N.H.; a brother, Paul Hills of Hudson, N.H.; a brother, James Hills and his wife, Ellen of Solon, Maine; a son, W. Frank Hadley Jr. of Littleton, N.H.; a daughter, Martha Ruffle and her husband Peter and their son Michael. She was predeceased by her husband, William Hadley and her sister, Marjorie Packard. Born Aug. 6, 1920, in Sorel, Quebec, Canada, he is the son of Felix and Parmelie (Chalifoux) Valois. He married M. Bernadette Paquin, Aug. 11, 1951, in Barton. Duffy was a machinist working in Connecticut and for Vermont Tap & Die; prior to becoming a machinist, he was a farmer in Sutton and East Albany. He was a devout Catholic serving with the Knights of Columbus at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Barton. Duffy was an avid fan of the Yankees and Montreal Canadians; he loved animals. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up, family gatherings and going to B & W in Barton for a clam dinner on Sundays after church. During his stay at the Pines, he became known for his love of singing as he would fill the halls with different tunes from days gone by. He was known for his good nature and humor and always made the staff smile. Duffy is survived by his loving wife of nearly 57 years, Marie of Sutton; children Mark J. Valois and companion Lori Phillips of Lyndonville, Monique Ball and companion Chad Tibbetts of Lyndonville, and son-in-law Russell Ball of West Burke; grandchildren Kyle and Brielle, Mark A. Hall and companion Carissa of West Burke, and Christopher A. Hall and companion Danae of Lyndonville; sisters Agatha Boutin of Barton, and Claire Souliere and husband Wesley of Becket, Mass. died on May 6, 2008, at Havenwood-Heritage Heights Retirement Community in Concord, N.H. He was 91 years old. Born July 31, 1916, in Littleton, N.H., to George G. McGregor and Catherine B. McGregor, Dr. McGregor attended Lisbon Public School before enrolling at Dartmouth College receiving his A.B. degree with the Class of 1937, followed by graduation from Dartmouth Medical School in 1938 and Rush Medical College in Chicago, Ill., in 1940. While interning at Maine General Hospital in Portland, he met Phyllis Oakes Prescott, RN. They were married on May 29, 1941. Dr. McGregor served in the US Army Medical Corps in World War II at Gorgas Army Hospital in Panama and was discharged with the rank of Major. Following Army service, he did a surgical residency at Maine General Hospital in Portland after which he moved back to Lisbon, N.H., to begin a practice of General and Family Medicine until his retirement in 1985. His practice had a radius of over 10 miles. He had admitting privileges at both the Cottage Hospital in Woodsville and the Littleton Hospital and served as Chief of Staff at both. In the community, Dr. McGregor served as Chairman of the Lisbon School Board, Trustee of the Lisbon Public Library, Grafton County Medical Examiner, and was a member of the Lisbon Lions Club and the Masons. In his spare time, Dr. McGregor played golf at the Ammonoosuc/Lisbon Village Golf Club in Lisbon where he was a multiple club champion. He was known as a voracious reader of historical novels, painted, restored furniture, collected coins, and gardened among many other pursuits. Dr. McGregor is survived by his loving wife Phyllis, two sons - Eugene Jr. "Bill" and Carol of Bloomington, Ind., and James and Jean of St. Johnsbury, and one daughter Kathryn of Concord, N.H. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Kalb of Evansville, Ind., five grandchildren and two great-grandsons. A memorial service at the convenience of family and friends will be held at a later date. She enjoyed helping people, knitting and crocheting, and was a member of the Enfield United Methodist Church. For the past 15 years she had been living with her nephew Frank Lovely in Whitefield, N.H. Eastman was predeceased by her husband in 1982, both her parents, two daughters Joanne Eastman and Dorothy Sweeney, a sister Etta Kerr in 2005, two brothers George and Walter Dunham, a grandson Gary Kilton, two great-grandchildren Zachariah Benware and Zachary Sweeney. , longtime Waterford resident, died Tuesday evening, May 13, 2008, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury at the age of 100. He was born March 8, 1908, in Bakersfield, Vt., a son of Joseph and Ellen (Tatro) Young. In the 1940s he and his wife Mary (Haselton) moved to Waterford where they operated a dairy farm for many years. He drove school bus for the Waterford school for seventeen years touching the hearts and souls of many children. He also mowed the cemetery lawns in Waterford for many years. Clarence was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great and great great grandfather. He was dedicated to the Lower Waterford Church and served as Deacon for many years. He was always willing to help his friends and neighbors in need. He was predeceased by his wife of nearly 75 years, Mary H. Young in August of 2003; their son Lee Young in March of 2003; and two grandsons Bruce and Roger Young in June of 1966; two brothers, Edmund and Walter Young; and a sister, Eleanor Lawyer. Funeral services will be held Sunday May 18, at the Lower Waterford Church with The Rev. Ann Hockridge officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Waterford. 51, died Monday evening in Bath, N.H. He was born Dec. 25, 1956 in Springfield, Vt., the son of Carlos F. and Constance (Mayhew) Welch. He received his education in Springfield and graduated from Springfield High School class of 1974. After high school he attended a Culinary Arts program. For most of his life Alan was employed as a carpenter in the building industry and most recently was employed at DCI furniture manufacturing in Lisbon, N.H. He lived in the Springfield area for many years, but most recently was living in South Ryegate, Vt. He was a member of the North American Hunting Group, and the National Rifle Association. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, He enjoyed snowmobiles and motorcycles, any outdoor activities, drawing and wildlife photography. He was also an avid Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics fan and a Nascar fan. He was a big man with a big heart and loved by all. He is survived by his parents of Springfield; one son Alan W. "AJ" Welch Jr. of Springfield; two daughters Tabatha N. Welch of Springfield, and Nicole S. Welch of Claremont, N.H.; three brothers Lloyd E. Welch of Springfield, Gregory S. Welch of Springfield and Randall E. Welch of Wyoming; and two grandchildren Austin L. Bassett and Elias J. Bassett. Also by several nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother Carlos F. Iverson was born on June 5, 1950, in Lyndonville, Vt., as son of Virginia (Berry) and the late Iver Iverson, Jr. Frederick was a member of the Franco-American Club who loved fishing and baseball, especially the Boston Red Sox. passed peacefully Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center in St. Johnsbury where she had lived since 2004. She will be remembered for her spirit and strong character. She was born in Edwards, N.Y., on Jan. 16, 1918, the daughter of Glen and Jennie Keene. The family moved to Vermont in 1924 and lived on a farm in Woodbury. She attended local schools and graduated from Woodbury High School. For several years she worked in Wells River where she met and married Ralph Stebbins of Woodsville in 1941. They moved to Coventry, Connecticut in 1948 where Doris worked as a secretary at the University of Connecticut. In 1970 they bought a farm in North Danville. She continued to live there after Ralph's death in 2001 with help of her thoughtful friends and neighbors. Her family is also grateful for the nurses and aides at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center who gave her such wonderful care of these last four and a half years. Doris will be remembered for her writing - many of her poems and stories were published in various magazines over the years and she was a regular contributor to the North Star. Last summer the activity group at the nursing home put together a book of her poems for which Doris had a book signing. She was a member of the North Danville Baptist Church. Survivors include nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Ralph, sister Helen Wellman, brothers Harold, Herbert, and Milford Keene. Her funeral service will be held Friday, May 15, at 11 a.m., at the Sayles Funeral Home in St. Johnsbury. The Rev. Douglas Carter will officiate. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 10 a.m. to the start of the service. Committal services will follow the funeral at 12:30 p.m. at the Durant Cemetery in Lower Cabot. , wife of Kenneth, of Danville, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, May 14, 2008, at the Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton at the age of 86. Born in St. Johnsbury Nov. 6, 1921, and raised in South Kirby, she was the daughter of Henry and Arlene (Williams) Stuart. She and Kenneth Ward were married for 67 years. Together they operated Dear Acres Farm on Pumpkin Hill until their retirement in 1983. Although she never worked outside her home, Florence contributed substantially to the family income by selling her eggs, fresh garden vegetables, and Thanksgiving turkeys. She was a fabulous cook particularly well known for her baked goods and took best in show several times for her jellies at the Vermont Farm Show in Barre. She and Ken traveled extensively throughout the country to national soil conservation conventions. To the area children waiting for the bus on the Ward porch, she was known as "Grammy." She loved just getting out with nature, reading, and doing crossword puzzles. She was a former 4-H leader and Sunday school teacher at the Danville Congregational Church. In the fall she churned butter at the Fairbanks Museum traditional crafts festival. She is first survived by her husband Kenneth whom she married Feb. 15, 1941; son Andrew Ward of Danville, daughter Ida Rainville and husband Art of Danville, daughter Barbara Machell and husband David of Danville; her seven grandchildren: Becky and Beth, Jeffrey and Cheryl, Christopher, Denise and Andrea; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; six brothers and sisters: Evelyn Hastings of Danville, Ethel Lunnie of Concord, Reginald Stuart of Waterford, Desmond Stuart of North Monroe, Henry Stuart of Concord, Elaine Merchand of North Monroe; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister Cora Jones, and two brothers John and Claude Stuart. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 19, at 2 p.m. at the Danville Congregational Church with the pastor, the Rev. Douglas Carter, officiating. Passes Away In St. Johnsbury. Gerard L. Scott, 58, of Mallett Road, Lunenburg, died Thursday morning, May 15, 2008, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab. Center. Scott was born in Concord, on Jan. 4, 1950, a son of Donat and Cecile Scott. Gerard was a lifelong resident of the Concord and Lunenburg area. He was a graduate of Concord High School and attended Lyndon State College. For 34 years he worked as a purchasing agent for the Gilman Mill and Dirigo Paper in Gilman. He enjoyed spending time with his family and going to his summer home on the lake. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Family members include his wife Patricia (Woods) Scott of Lunenburg, a son Patrick N. Scott and his wife Chrissie, a grandson Xander all of Lunenburg, two brothers, Donald Scott and his wife Carol, Richard Scott and his wife Beth all of North Carolina, two sisters Diane Hill and Pauline Scott both of St. Johnsbury and several nieces and nephews. , 68, well-known business man of Newport, died May 14, 2008, in Lebanon, N.H. He was born March 22, 1940, in Newport Center a son of Emilien and Maria (Dumont) Tanguay. On Nov. 30, 1963, he married Nancy LaPlante who survives him. Marcel graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Newport and was owner of Brown's Concrete Products in Woodsville, N.H. He held memberships with the American Legion in Lady Lake, Fla., Knights of Columbus Gibbons Council of Newport and the Vermont National Guard. He was a member of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport and the Newport Country Club. Among his hobbies, he enjoyed playing golf in Newport and Florida which was his favorite past time. Marcel and Nancy owned several motor homes for many years and enjoyed traveling and camping up and down the East coast as well as a trip to California. They especially enjoyed the coast of Maine and Old Orchard Beach. Their love of Vermont continued with their return to Newport and recent purchase of a camp on Lake Memphremagog. Marcel and Nancy established many lasting friendships wherever they traveled and were also very family oriented, as they loved their family dearly, especially their grandchildren as they watched them grow in their many sports activities. He is survived by his wife Nancy Tanguay of Newport; and by three children: Janet Tanguay of Amsterdam, N.Y., Jamie Tanguay and his fiancée Andrea Archambault of Sunapee, N.H., and Julie Gendron and her husband Peter of Merrimack, N.H.; five grandchildren: Tyler and Eric Gendron, Kayla, Ryan and Brandon Tanguay; his brother and sisters: Fernand Tanguay of Orleans, Rita Piette and her husband Marcel of Irasburg, and Simone Fitzgerald and her husband Martin of East Montpelier; two sisters-in-law: Theresa Tanguay of Newport and Sally Lemieux of Newport; his mother-in-law Shirley LaPlante of Newport; and a brother-in-law Terry LaPlante of Newport; and by several nieces and nephews. Passes Away at Age 93. Thelma Hartshorn of Danville passed away Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at home at the age of 93. Born in Danville on March 1, 1914, she was one of two daughters born to Ernest and Nellie (Peck) Hartshorn. She was predeceased by her older sister, Irene Hartshorn Hedges of Shelburne, in 1986. After graduating from Danville High School, Thelma nursed at Littleton Hospital 1938-1948 and at Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster 1948-1965. From 1965-1975 she took care of state children in Morrisville. After caring for Dr. Lattie Coor, the former University of Vermont president, she retired in 1978 and returned home to Danville. She coordinated and operated The Open Door in Danville, distributing clothes and food to the needy. Memorial services will be held Monday, May 19, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow the service. Her friend and pastor, the Rev. Henry Cheney, will officiate. Family committal services will take place that morning at 10:15 a.m. at the Danville Green Cemetery. , lifetime resident of St. Johnsbury, died May 19, 2008, at St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center at the age of 93. She was a longtime resident of the Hawkins House on Main Street. She was born June 6, 1914, the daughter of the late Frank and Alice (Mileham) West. Doris was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy and Lyndon State Teacher's College. She taught in Glover and Orleans during her early teaching career and subsequently at the Portland Street School and for many years at the Arlington School. After 39 years, she retired in 1976 and worked as a substitute teacher. Doris enjoyed her summers spent at her camp on Harvey's Lake. She competed in the Senior Olympic Games held every year in Poultney. She also enjoyed traveling, bowling, walking, cross-country skiing, her own yard sales and others, and her many visits to Texas. Doris was a member of the AARP-Chapter 624 in St. Johnsbury, the Caledonia and Southern Essex Retired Teachers Association, the Grace United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of Mystic Star Chapter #29 Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by her sister, Alice "Ethel" Alley of Rutland, niece Bonnie Lee Jackson, husband James and great-nephew, Jason Jackson of Carrollton, Texas. Services will be held Friday, May 23, at 11 a.m., at the Grace United Methodist Church. Committal services will precede the service at 10 a.m. at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. , age 87, passed away at home under Hospice care with her family on May 18, 2008. Rebecca was born on Oct. 1, 1920, a daughter to Edmond and Rose (Paquette) Pilotte in Rochester, N.H. She graduated from Littleton High School and attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Rebecca was employed as a computer supervisor at Watertown Arsenal. Throughout her life, she lived in Gilman, Vt., Littleton, N.H., Everett, Mass., and most recently Dover, N.H. She enjoyed cooking, reading, traveling, and visits with her family. Surviving family members include her two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Leon Pilotte and Mrs. Paul Pilotte; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her two brothers, Leon and Paul Pilotte, her sister, Rita (Pilotte) Webber, and her husband, James Desmond. , formerly of Sutton, died peacefully early Friday morning May 16, 2008, at his winter home in Bushnell, Florida at the age of 90. He was born Jan. 9, 1918, in St. Johnsbury the son of Dennis and Anna (Skinner) Fox. Warren grew up on the family farm in Newark. On Aug. 27, 1942 he married Madeline Hodge. A World War II veteran, Warren was stationed on the USS Coolidge when it was bombed by the Japanese. He survived by courageously swimming to shore. Warren earned a Master's Degree in education from the University of Vermont. He touched the hearts of many during a long career of teaching and serving as principal in Vermont schools including Sutton, Barton and Londonderry. He also founded Foxes Sawmill in Sutton where he resided with his beloved wife Madeline. In his later years he, with his wife, and his sister Geneva Harris traveled extensively through the US and Canada. He enjoyed playing cribbage and visiting with his friends. Survivors include his sister, Geneva Harris of Lyndon Center; three sisters-in-law, Laurette Fox of Ware, Mass., Pauline Fox of Pittsfield, N.H., and Catherine Hatcher of Sutton; a brother-in-law, Burton and Pearl Hodge of Sutton; cousins, Katharine Crow of Newport, and Francis Rice of Orleans; numerous nieces and nephews including, Dennis Fox and wife Jackie of Pittsfield, N.H. who were supportive in his later years; and dear friends, Roger and Virginia Badger, Jim and Kathy Norris and family, and Carroll and Donna Sherburne and family. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife Madeline Fox in 2001; and his three brothers, Harland, Paul, and Merton and his wife Elodie Fox. , 91, resident of Powhatan Nursing Home, Falls Church, Va., died the morning of March 9, 2008. Born Nov. 4, 1916, in Lyndonville, she was the daughter of the late Allen Willard Lynaugh and Flossie Lucinda Gilbert Lynaugh. After graduating from Lyndon Institute, Lyndon Center, in 1936, Glenn was employed in New York City as a bookkeeper for hotels and hospitals. In 1956, Glenn moved to Alexandria, Va., and worked as a supervisor in bookkeeping for paper supply companies until her retirement. Glenn was an active member of Fairlington Presbyterian Church, Alexandria, Va., and became a charter member of Faith Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Kingstowne, Va., in 1987, being actively involved in youth programs, youth summer camp, prison and fellowship ministries, in both churches. Glenn is survived by her brother, Russell Lynaugh of St. Johnsbury, and one sister, Marian Root, of Lyndon. She was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Truex, of Binghamton, N.Y.

, 88, of Ryegate, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 20, 2008, following a short period of declining health. She was born in Groton, on Nov. 19, 1919, the daughter of Elwin and Ethel Fifield. She graduated from Groton High School in 1936, from Lyndon Normal School in 1939, and received her B.S. in Education from Lyndon State College in 1971. She married Harold Nelson on Sept. 2, 1944, in Groton, and they lived on the family farm in Ryegate all their married life. Vera was a member of Ryegate Presbyterian Church, Blue Mountain Grange, Home Dem, and Vermont Retired Teachers' Association. She taught for 23 years in various area elementary schools, retiring from Newbury Elementary after 17 years there. For 20 years Vera and Harold spent winters in Palmetto, Fla., where she captured numerous trophies for her shuffleboard prowess. She was an excellent cook, loved music and sports, but her greatest love in life was her family. She is survived by Harold, her loving husband of 63 years; four children and their spouses: Nancy and Gene Perkins of Ryegate, Bruce and Gail Nelson of Ryegate, Bob and Jodi Nelson of Lincoln, N.H., and Ken and Bobbie Nelson of Ryegate; nine grandchildren, Joe Perkins, Gordon and Jennifer Perkins, Curt and Emily Nelson, Andrea and Ryan Dennis, Jim and Christy Nelson, Tracy and Ryan Seaman, Jeremy and Natal Nelson, Marcy and David Singleton, and Katie and Graham VerLee; and 11 great grandchildren. , of St. Johnsbury, passed away at her home on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at the age of 87. She was born Aug. 6, 1920, in Newport, one of 11 children. Her father Gabriel Handy was born in Wada, Lebanon; her mother Anna Goleb in Mt. Lebanon, Syria. On April 13, 1950, she married Roland "Giz" Grenier who predeceased her on April 7, 2005. She graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy. Hilda was known for her warmth, graciousness, and generosity. Those who entered the Grenier home left with a wonderful meal, feeling warmed and welcomed. Her home was comfortable where words spoken were always kind. Over the years, Hilda worked at Western Union, St. Johnsbury Trucking, Goldberg's, Spanish Villa Restaurant, Parker's Drug Store, and the Koffee Kup Bakery. She was a devoted member of St. John the Evangelist Church. , 88, of Danville, died peacefully at home Thursday, May 15, 2008. His wife Beverly (Currier) Ames died Aug. 26, 2006. Bob first came to Danville in the 1940s when his parents moved. He loved his home in Danville. Bob was born in Pittsburgh, Penn., on Aug. 13, 1919. From 1938 to 1941 Bob attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and completed three years toward a Wildlife Management degree before entering the Navy. After his service in the Navy he matriculated at Boston University and earned a bachelor degree of science in education and a master degree in education in 1948. A veteran of World War II, Bob served as a communications officer, an aeronautical draftsman, and an aeronautical mechanic in the Navy. He retired from the USNR with the rank of Lieut. JG. He received national recognition for his development of an environmental conservation curriculum while teaching biology in Lexington, Mass. Bob used his school vacations to pursue his hobbies of hunting, fishing, boating and hiking/walking. He loved the outdoors. For most of his life he had hunting dogs and a boat. After he retired from teaching, he proudly served as a Coast Guard Auxiliary member in Massachusetts and Vermont. He was a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Iwo Jima group. Bob served for years as a Retired Senior Volunteer for Central Vermont and the Northeast Kingdom. He is survived by his children: Robert E. Ames Jr. and wife Leslie of Niantic, Conn., David W. Ames and wife Nancy of Hilton Head, S.C., Susan Ames of Burlington, Martha Ames and husband Robert Raymond of Ft. Collins Colo.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Bob's committal service will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the Danville Green Cemetery.

Samson was born in Lancaster on July 10, 1960, a son of Edward Samson Sr. and the late Corrine (Gonyer) Samson. Scrub was a lifetime resident of Lancaster. He was employed as a small engine mechanic at Crane's Sporting Goods and for Trees n Turf. He enjoyed farming and was employed at the Forbes Farm for many years. He also loved spending time with his boys and being around friends. His family members include two sons: James M. Samson Jr., and Thomas S. Samson; and their mother Maureen (Coughlin) Samson of Jefferson; three sisters and their spouses: Deborah and Charles Huntington, Cindy and Ralph Bennett III, Tina Samson and John Parks; two brothers Edward and his wife Wynta Samson; and Phillip Samson, previously deceased all of Lancaster. Walter served in the US Navy for four years, was inactive in the Naval Reserve for two years, and was with the National Guard in Woodsville, N.H., for 10 years. He worked in the furniture manufacturing business for many years, first with Allen Rogers Lumber Company of Wentworth, N.H., with the former Plymwood Furniture Company in Lisbon, and then for DCI, also in Lisbon. He was an avid Red Sox fan and also a NASCAR fan. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, to whom he was married on Feb. 22, 1969; a daughter, Dawn Horton and husband Ken of Pike, N.H.; a son Walter W. Garrett, Jr. of Lisbon; a granddaughter Kayla Horton of Pike; sisters Madeline Mailloux of Amherst, N.H., and Naomi Stone of Nashua, N.H.; brothers Eugene Garrett and wife Eleanor of Wentworth, N.H., and Ferald Garrett of Warren, N.H.; several nieces and nephews; his mother-in-law, Phyllis Taylor of Orford, N.H., as well as several sisters and brothers in law and their families. He was born on Oct. 25, 1935, in East Haven, the son of the late Norman and Glen (Gero) Hartwell. Hartwell was owner and operator of D. Hartwell Contracting Inc. On April 14, 1988, in Stanfordville, N.Y., he married Mary (Gilligan) Hartwell. She survives him at home. She was a 1946 graduate of Woodsville High School, Woodsville, N.H. She married Dean G. Hammond on May 6, 1950. She worked as a secretary at New England Baptist Hospital, Boston, Mass., and later at First National Warehouse in North Haverhill. Edie was a devoted member and past Worthy Matron of Iona Lafayette Chapter #39 Order of the Eastern Star of North Haverhill and Grand Adah of the Grand Chapter of New Hampshire Order of the Eastern Star, and Trustee of Grafton #46 Building Association. She was a member of the North Haverhill United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She worked at the North Haverhill Fair and organized the queen contest for several years. She enjoyed working outside in her flower gardens, raking, and shoveling snow. She was predeceased by her husband, Dean G. Hammond on Dec. 14, 1992. She is survived by her two sons, Don J. Hammond and wife Patty and Alan D. Hammond, both of North Haverhill; a special niece, Shirley Slattery and husband Peter of Bath, N.H., and several other nieces and nephews. , 90, formerly of Mt. Pleasant Street, St. Johnsbury, died Saturday evening May 24, 2008, at St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. A native of Berlin, N,H., she was born Aug. 26, 1917, the second of twin daughters of Jeremiah and Rose (Keenan) Couhie. She graduated from Berlin High School in 1935 and Concord Business College in 1936. This was followed by a career with the Brown Company until her marriage to Richard Dionne in 1941, when they moved to St. Johnsbury, and operated Dionne's Welding Shop together until retiring in 1980. They enjoyed many years of wintering in Orlando, Fla., making new friends and enjoying old friends. Bea was a long time parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church and worked as a volunteer in various fundraising capacities. She was a volunteer for the NVRH Auxiliary, The Fairbanks Museum, served as docent in the Art Gallery of the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, was involved in the local Girl Scout organization and received the 50-year pin for her service in the St. Johnsbury Women's Club. She started the lending library at Colonial Apartments. Her quick wit and ability to enjoy a good laugh made her many lifelong friends. Survivors include three children: Eugene Dionne and wife, Peggy, of Littleton, Colo., Patricia Dubois of Rye, N.H., and Janet Quatrini and husband, Bryon, of St. Johnsbury; four grandchildren: Jeremy Dionne, Demerise and Christian Dubois, and Erin Quatrini; five great grandchildren; and a very special sister-in-law, Joan Couhie of Weare, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard, in 1998; her two brothers: Joseph and Bernard Couhie; and two sisters, her twin, Bernice M. Benjamin, and Cecilia Fortier. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday, May 29 at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. Rena was born on Sept. 9, 1912, in Fall River, Mass., to Victor and Fabienna (Ouellette) Piche. She served as a Superior Court Clerk in Los Angeles County, Calif., prior to her retirement. Rena lived in California for 50 years prior to returning to New England in 2002. While there, she was involved in the French Canadian Club, served as a voting registrar and was involved in various capacities in the senior center as well as in politics in Carson, Calif. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur F.G. Bouthillier; her daughter, Rena L. Krissman on Jan. 4, 2006; and a great-grandson Michael Krissman on Jan. 11, 1993. She is survived by two granddaughters, Erin Krissman of Lisbon, N.H., and Marni Krissman of Ryegate, Vt.; three great-grandchildren, Lucas Costa, David Costa, and Jerre Hensley; two half-sisters, Rita Levesque of California and Rolande LaRue of Fall River; a half-brother, Roger Piche of California; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Paul Roy and Evelyn (Sanford) Roy and also his beloved dog, Jake, who was his constant companion. Bob is survived by his wife, Judith A. (Brewer) Roy. They were married in 1962. He is also survived by three children, Robert F. Roy Jr. of Spofford, N.H.; Sandie and Charles Cunningham of Halifax, Vt. and Cheryl and Jason Wincek of Halifax, Vt.; seven grandchildren and one great grandson born on May 25, 2008. Bob loved his family dearly. Bob is also survived by his brother, Paul Roy Jr. and wife, Donna, of Searsburg, and his sisters, Carol and husband, Chuck Bernal, of Searsburg, Vt., and Marylin and Kermit Dwyer of St. Johnsbury, Vt. Bob also leaves many dear friends including Edward "Buster" Wheeler, who stayed with him 24/7 during his final weeks helping the family care for him; close friends, Mark Barlow and Ron "Tinman" Smith, who spent many hours visiting and helping Bob. Bob started working on construction at a very young age. He also work for awhile at Mount Snow in West Dover, Vt. Then he turned to driving truck for construction companies until his health forced him to retire in 2006. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors. , 91, a long-time resident of Craftsbury, Vt., currently of Derby, Vt., died Tuesday evening, May 27, 2008, at Dartmouth Hitchcock-Medical Center in Lebanon N.H. He was born on the family farm in Craftsbury, Vt., Sept. 30, 1916, the son of Glen and May (Wilcox) Bailey. He attended public schools in Craftsbury and graduated from Craftsbury Academy in 1936. At this time he had a flock of 600 chickens. Following graduation he remained on the farm and helped his father in the farming business and continued his poultry business. He purchased the family farm in 1946 when he had a flock of 12,500 birds. He married Erla Foster in 1948 and continued farming until 1975. They sold the farm to their son, John, in 1986. During his last 15 years of farming he was a dealer, distributor and installer of Berg Barn Equipment. After the sale of his farm, he continued to live in the farmhouse, dealing in real estate and used cars. He purchased a home in 1991 on Central Street in Newport, Vt., and continued his dealings in real estate and cars. He moved to Derby in 2000. Wesley was a 50-year member of the Craftsbury Community Grange and a member of the Lamoille Grange No. 233 in Morrisville, Vt. He also was a 50-year member and Past Master of the Mineral Masonic Lodge of Wolcott, Vt.. He joined the Mt. Vernon Lodge No. 8 and was a Past Patron of the Coral Chapter No. 16, both of Morrisville. He became a member of the Lakeside Chapter No. 270 ES in Newport in 1996 and was a 32nd decree member of the Scottish Rite and Shriners. Also in 1993 he became a member of the York Rite. While in Craftsbury he had served as a Town Lister, Grand Juror and Justice of the Peace for many years. He also served as a director of the Farm Bureau, representing Essex and Orleans counties. He leaves three sons, Thomas of Concord, Vt.; John and friend, Kathy, of Craftsbury; and Richard and his wife, Cheryl, of Craftsbury; two grandchildren, Trina Aicher and John Bailey Jr.; and a great grandchild, Rachel Ann. He also leaves two sisters, Thelma Ward of Morrisville and Ethel Bailey of Greensboro, Vt.; nephews, nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by two sisters, Annabelle Restall and Doris Griswold. , age 74, died May 26, 2008, at his home in Lisbon, N.H., of a lengthy illness. Bob was born in Littleton, N.H., on Jan. 16, 1934, a son to Oscar Erwin Bean and Bertha Richards Bean Thorne. He was a lifetime resident of Lisbon and attended Lisbon High School. He was employed in the lumber business at Varney & Smith Lumber/Newman Lumber and HG Woods. He was employed by the state of New Hampshire Department of Transportation until a stroke in 1995 forced his early retirement. Bob was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and bird watching. He participated in many moose hunts, was a member of the DMIP, and was a speaker at Hunter's Safety programs. He was also a member of the New Hampshire Gas & Steam Association. He loved antiquities and history, particularly when those subjects involved the Clan MacBean or the Revolutionary or Civil War eras. He was a self-taught "bones" player. He always tried to educate all around him and was an avid reader. He would tell you that he was proudest of his role as a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Natalie G. Bean, and his daughters, Jody B. Labrecque, of Littleton; Roberta B. Hannaford, and her husband, Don R. Hannaford of Candia; Ramona B. Raynor, and her husband, Ray A. Raynor, III, of Lyndonville, Vt.; Kimmy B. Lavoie, and her husband, Glenn A. Lavoie, of Littleton; and Jerralyn B. Welch, and her husband, Steven G. Welch, of Littleton. He also leaves his grandchildren, Joelle and Lindsay Labrecque; Rhys, John, and Domenica Alioto; Airman Kendra Rocha; Kally and Hannah Lavoie; and Jessenia Welch. Mr. Dupuis retired after 35 years as a trainman for Boston-Maine Railroad. He was a member of the Elks in Littleton, N.H., and served in the Army/Air Corp during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Ross-Wood Post No. 20. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Punta Gorda and St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Woodsville, N.H. Survivors include his sons, Joel of N. Haverhill, N.H., and Shawn of Plainfield, Ill. He also leaves many nieces, nephews and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Emmons Dupuis. Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family in New Hampshire. , 98, of Knoll Drive, Barre City, Vt., died Wednesday May 28, 2008, at the Berlin Health and Rehab Center, with her family at her bedside. Born June 11, 1909, in Newbury, Vt., she was the daughter of Thomas and Louis A. (MacDonald) Longmoore. She graduated from Newbury High School in 1927. She had graduated from Plymouth, N.H., State Teachers College and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vt. On Dec. 14, 1934, she married Maurice J. Gignac in Enfield, N.H. They made their home in Lebanon, N.H. and Ludlow, Vt., coming to Barre, Vt., in 1948, where they had since resided. Her husband died in 1962. She had been an elementary school teacher, in Lebanon, N.H., and for over 20 years in Barre City, retiring in 1977. Teaching was her love and passion and she maintained many relationships with her former students and their families. Being active in her church and maintaining her wide circle of friends and family were her special interests, as well as her Scottish heritage. She had been a longtime volunteer at the Central Vermont Hospital Gift Shop and belonged to the Hospital Auxiliary for many years. Her memberships include the First Presbyterian Church of Barre for over 50 years and its Elwood Club and held many church offices as well as the Order of Rebekah's, the Vermont Association of the Blind, the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society, the Vermont Retired Teachers Association and Washington County Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include her daughter Karen Peake and granddaughter Holly Peake and her son Bruce Gignac and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by all her siblings. Burial will be made in the Hope Cemetery at the convenience of her family. died peacefully at his daughter's home in Oregon on April 19, 2008, surrounded by his family. Carl was born June 27, 1923, in Chicago, Ill., to Carl Sr. and Katherine (Warner) Hornberger. His college education was interrupted by World War II when he was called to proudly serve his country on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, N.M. This experience was humbling and impacted the way he viewed the world. After the way, he earned his doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Illinois, where he met and married Covelle George. Carl and and Covelle moved to Delaware where he worked as a chemist for DuPont until he retired. Throughout his life, Carl expressed creativity in both his professional and personal lives. He experimented with various artistic mediums, including painting, ceramics, polymer clay and photography. He honed his handyman skills by improving and modifying all of his homes. In his spare time, he enjoyed sailing, birding, and traveling (especially in the western U.S.). He traveled to Central and South America to pursue his birding hobby and also foster good will and understanding between people of different cultures. He was also passionate about giving back to the community and helping others. He was active in Democratic Party politics and was an original board member of the Delcastle Technical High School. He taught courses at Delaware State College and also hosted students in his home. After nearly 34 years of marriage, Covelle died in 1984. Carl then met and married his second wife, Jean Battles Irvin, in 1987 and began another phase of life involving more art, travel, education and even dance. They moved to Groton, Vt., and enjoyed the advantages of a caring and supportive community. When Jean died in 2002, Carl returned to Wilmington and then later moved to Oregon. Carl is survived by his son Jonathan of Terrebonne, Ore.; daughters Catherine Wagner (Chuck) of Wilmington, Del., and Leslie Keller (Pete Civitarese) of Terrebonne, Ore., with whom he lived; his sister Jacqueline of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by Jean's sons Brendan Battles and Dylan Battles; her daughters Debbie Paris, Megan Bennett and Zoe Battles, and their children. A memorial and celebration of life will be held at a later date. , 63, of Newport, Vt., died May 29, 2008, in Newport surrounded by her family. She was born Feb. 21, 1945, in Newport, daughter of Gordon and Marjorie (Hill) Chesney. On Jan. 7, 1972, she married Alan Myers who survives her. Mrs. Myers graduated from Brighton High School and attended Keene State College for three years. She was employed for 11 years by the Island Pond Health Center, 10 years by the Northeast Kingdom Human Services, and 10 years by Orleans Medical Clinic where she was their medical billing supervisor. She held memberships with the O.E.S. Lakeside Chapter, Brighton Rescue EMTI for 12 years and she was the organist for Christ Episcopal Church for many years. Among her hobbies she enjoyed sewing, making many clothes for her family, and playing the organ and piano. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Alan Myers, of Coventry, Vt.; two children, Alfred Myers and his wife, Karen, of Ferrisburgh, Vt., Stacey Davis of Georgia, Vt; and by her stepchildren: David Myers and his wife, Shelle, of Georgia, Vt; Carolyn Palmer of Hinesburg, Steven Myers and his wife, Amy, of Shelburne, Vt., and Angela Myers of Burlington. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Jeromie Dalziel, Shane Dalziel, Lauren Myers, Carly Myers, Bradley Myers and his wife, Joanna, Kristina Myers, Sara Myers, Erin Palmer, Troy Davis, Andrew Davis, Mickayla Myers, Evan Myers, and Melina Myers, and by two brothers, Ronald Chesney and his wife, Roberta, of Island Pond, and Bruce Chesney and his wife, Lora, of Coventry, also by several nieces and nephews. of Kennebunkport, Maine, and formerly of Littleton, N.H., died at his home, surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. William (Bill) was born on Feb. 9, 1936, in Lowell, Mass. He was the son of William R. Walsh Sr. and Mary (Derby) Walsh. He attended Lowell schools and graduated from Keith Academy. Mr. Walsh graduated from Lowell Technological Institute, which is now known as UMass at Lowell. After college, Bill began his career in the paper industry in 1958, working for Hammermill Paper in Erie, Pa. He then went on to work for the Gilman Paper Co., in New York City and Gilman, Vt.; Georgia Pacific Paper Co. in Kalamazoo, Mich., Darien, Conn., and Dalton, N.H.; Patriot Paper in Hyde Park, Mass.; Detroit River Paper Co. in Detroit, Mich.; IVEX and Packing Dynamics in Joliet, Ill., where he retired as vice president in 2005. Having moved to Kennebunkport 21 years ago, Mr. Walsh was a member of Holy Spirit Parish Church - St. Martha's Church in Kennebunk. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Elks, and Cape Arundel Golf Club in Kennebunkport. In his younger years, he was captain of his baseball and football teams in high school and in college and played semi-pro ball in Lowell. He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid Red Sox fan. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Mr. Walsh is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carol E. (Finneral) Walsh, of Kennebunkport; his two sons, William R. Walsh III and his wife, Chryssoula, of Kennebunk and Michael Walsh of Cumberland; his two daughters, Colleen Waterhouse and her husband, Michael, of Kennebunkport and Erin Murray and her husband, James, of Farmington, Conn.; his sisters, Shirley Wilkinson and her husband, Dr. Charles, of W. Hartford, Conn., and Nancy Methot and husband, Daniel, of E. Granby, Conn.; his aunt Mary K. Walsh of Lowell, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Patrick and Sarah Jones, Shaun, Meghan and Kaitlyn Murray, Timothy and Michael Walsh; and several nieces and nephews. , 76, a Lyndonville resident, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2008, at the Veterans Affairs Medical center in White River Junction. Peter was born July 24, 1931, in Boston, Mass., son of the late Peter W. and Wilhemina L. (Boehme) Kelly. He married Marilyn Sparre, Jan. 28, 1961, in Dorchester, Mass. Peter worked as an Electronic Technician all his life. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, he served in the U.S. Army ASA during the Korean Conflict, was a life member of the VFW Lyndonville Post No. 10038 and American Legion Post No. 30 Lyndonville. He also served as Unit Commander of the Northeast Squadron, Civil Air Patrol, for many years, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Peter is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn of Lyndonville, seven children, June Kelly and companion Chris Powers, Peter Kelly and wife Kelly, Mary Liberty, Ralph Kelly and wife Angela, Alice Ruffner and husband Robert, Grace Parenteau and husband Paul, Michele Kelly and companion Ethan Marion; several nieces and nephews. Pete enjoyed his 20 grandchildren and one great grandchild and loved to spend time with them. Peter was predeceased by a brother Gerard. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday Evening, June 2, 5 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Church, with the Rev. Jon Schnobrich, celebrant. , 62, South Yarmouth, Mass., passed away on May 25, 2008. He was born on May 1, 1946, the son of Paul and Aneta Dovhulok. He graduated from Littleton High School. In high school, he was on the ski team and excelled at ski jumping. During his life he was employed as a heavy equipment operator. He enjoyed NASCAR racing and later in life he was an aspiring artist. Gary was predeceased by his parents. Surviving family members include his daughter, Annika Dovholuk, of Florida, his two sisters, Paula Dovholuk, of Portland, Ore., and Mt. Shasta, Calif., and Diane Dovholuk, of Sunol, Calif., and his brother, Stephen Dovholuk, of Manchester, N.H. A family graveside service will be held on Sunday, May 31, at 1 p.m. at the Glenwood Cemetery in Littleton, N.H. A celebration of Gary's life will be at the Dovholuk home following the service.
