Linda Lou (Brown) Basford

, 55, of Orleans died September 7, 2007, after fighting a 15-year battle with multiple sclerosis valiantly and with a dignity that awed and humbled all who knew her. In her 55 years she lived and loved, stood up for what she believed in, said what she felt was right, and never ever gave up. She was an inspiration and friend to all. A light has dimmed but not gone out. She was small in stature but had a powerful presence. She lit up a room with her smile, and her heart was as big as they come. She loved to laugh and more, to make people laugh. Her sense of humor was contagious. Suffering and giving up were not words she understood. Pain was her constant companion, but she never ever gave into it. Never one to complain, she was always looking out for everyone else. She believed in angels. They were her comfort and joy. If anyone visited her, they could see her angel collection. She had well over 200 of them, and they were everywhere in her home. She always wore angel pins; they were her inspiration. She is now in the arms of her angels, and they are comforting her. One of her constant companions and protectors was the family dog Sasha Rae. Sasha died the same day as Mrs. Basford, and now they both are angels in heaven. On April 11, 1970, she married her soul mate and love of her life, Brian Basford, who predeceased her. After being married almost 34 years, the two still had a bond that most people only hope for. They are now together and at peace. She was born February 3, 1952, to Floyd and Doris Brown in Newport. She was her mother's "little milkweed girl," and she knew her mother loved her unconditionally. Her mother's heart is broken over the loss of another daughter, but she is comforted knowing her daughter is in God's hands. Her children gave her joy, and she was so proud of them. They meant the world to her. Her children loved her very much and were blessed to have a mother like her. She was the best mother for whom a child could ever ask. Her grandchildren were a blessing, and she loved them as only a grandmother could. She loved having them visit, and they always brought a smile to her face, no matter what. Her siblings all considered her a true and loving friend and someone to whom they all looked up. She loved life and her family very much. Her group of friends was many, and their loss is great. Her motto was, "I did it my way!" She worked at Austin's Drug Store for many years, before being forced to get done due to her illness. She enjoyed all the people who would stop at the counter to reminisce about what was happening in town. She worked for Ralph Swett in both Evansville and Barton. When her children were younger, she babysat children at home, so she could be close to them. She was a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her mother, Doris Brown, of West Charleston; by her daughter Donna Basford Green and her husband, Corey, by her son Daniel Basford of Orleans; by grandchildren Dakota and Ashlea of Orleans; by siblings: Faye Brown Stocker and her husband, Ken, of Newport, Gail Brown Sheltra of West Charleston, Blaine Brown and his wife, Pearla, of Irasburg, and Sherry Brown Ingalls and her husband, Dennis, of West Glover; by her mother-in-law, Ethel Basford, of Orleans; by sisters-in-law: Beverly Messier of Green Acres, Florida, Phoebe Kimball of Coventry, Barbara Isham of Newbury, Gloria White of Greensboro Bend, Lorraine Gilfillan of Nashua, New Hampshire, MyranBrosseau of Hardwick, and Beatrice Whittier of Orleans; by numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Brian Basford, on September 20, 2003; by her father, Floyd Brown, on January 6, 2005; by her baby sister Christine Brown on March 10, 2004; and by many of her husband's family members. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 12, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport. Interment will follow in Pleasantview Cemetery in Orleans. Should friends desire, contributions in Mrs. Basford's memory may be made to her daughter Donna Green, 15 Cottage Street, Orleans, Vermont 05860.
